Delivering Out of State Orders

These are examples of the out of state furniture orders. I enjoy taking road trips to deliver furniture to customers. It's nice to take a break from the shop and get out on the open road. Plus, the delivery fee is less for the customer. When the customer sees the furniture, they are so happy and excited. It makes the trip so worth it. Normally, I will deliver within 600 miles of the shop, these deliveries were in Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, Washington DC, to name a few. Next road trip is to Texas.

We Ship Furniture Nationwide

We ship nationwide. 🚚🚚 Each table or other pieces are shipped in a custom built crate. There are no standard sizes. It takes time to figure the dimensions to accommodate the piece. First, a 3D drawing 💻 is made to get the correct measurements, then the construction starts. It is so important that the piece does not move inside during shipping. We use straps to keep the piece from moving.

Customers always wonder why shipping is so expensive. First of all, tables that we build are heavy and with the weight of the crate, they can weigh 400 to 500 lbs., depending on the size. Shipping is determined by size - length, width, weight, and distance. There is a formula to determine the density and freight class. With large tables, the crate can be considered oversize, which adds to the cost. Also, when delivering to a residence, there are additional services such as residential delivery and lift gate service. There is a lot that happens to get the furniture from the shop to the customer. It's not like shipping a box of chocolates...

Walnut Wood

Before starting the build for a walnut table, I enjoy going to the lumber yard to pick out the rough walnut. Usually spend an hour or two going through each board to make sure that they are not cracked, warped, cupped, and have that beautiful look. Then, I take it back to the shop and start the process of milling it to the size needed. Walnut is such a beautiful hardwood.

Kiln Dried

Kiln dried - what does that mean? Kiln drying is basically a process of placing sawn lumber into kilns where heated air is circulated. Temperatures inside range from 120 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a controlled process of reducing the moisture content in the wood, reducing warpage, cracking, and movement. Also, for reclaimed barn wood, it will kill any bugs inside the wood.

Why does wood warp? When one part of a wooden board dries faster than another part, the drier part shrinks faster and causes stress that changes the shape of the wood.

For each build, I spend a lot of time inspecting every board for warpage, defects, cracking, and damage. Knowing that wood is a natural element and is subject to seasonal changes, it is important to select the best.

3D Software for Designing

I was designing products on paper in 2D with the help of a big eraser. After awhile I started to think that there has to be a more accurate and easier way to do this. The answer....SketchUP, 3D software. It is great for designing products, especially since I have a visual mindset. It took me some time to figure how to use the program. What really helped was a website that I mentioned on the previous post. Now, I'm spending time designing products that I want to offer to consumers. Another nice feature of the software is the cut list plugins, which gives me a list of all the parts with measurements. It takes all the guess work out of knowing what wood supplies I need when I go to the lumber yard. If you are thinking about designing, try it out.

Design in 3D

Designing on paper takes a bit of time and is not that accurate. It gives the general idea of what the product will look like and has measurements, plus I draw mainly in 2D. This weekend, I decided to try out SketchUp by Google. It is a 3D program to design products. At first, I couldn't get the program to design like I wanted. There was a step that I was missing. Usually, I can figure out a program in a short time. So, I went to the tutorials that SketchUp have and they didn't really go into every step; quick and short versions. Now, I'm thinking, where can I get some instructions that make sense so that I can "get it." After some searching on the web, I found a site that explains how to use SketchUp in detail. Here it is: SketchUp for woodworkers. They have ten video tutorials that teach you how to use SketchUp. Now, using SketchUp is easy and fun.
