www.oceanicdreams.com was first launched in 2003 and this blog in 2006. Both have been separate and never coexisted. We have changed that, in fact we have completely revamped our website and integrated the blog in it as well. We want to be able to tell the stories with photos and words in one place!

Every shark scientist knows "Doc Gruber" - but what do we, the general public, really know about him and his work?...

Not much probably, other than some basic facts of his achievements as one of the most, if not the most prominent and illustrious shark science pioneer he has been during the last half century.

The "Doc" is now retired, a professor emeritus of the University of Miami, but he is still going strong, academically and otherwise, continuing his research with graduate students in his Shark Lab in Bimini. He does his job energetically and with all the enthusiasm of a curious and adventurous youngster. Folks like him age as everybody else does, all right, but they never grow old...

The "Doc" in his early twenties (1963) - with looks like that he could have also become a dashing movie star back then... Do I exaggerate, ladies?... :-) :-)

Same "Doc" - fifty years later...

I have the privilege to know "Doc" Gruber (I call him "Docman"; he calls me "Wolfman") as a friend, and we are drawn to each other mainly by our love of sharks and old WWII airplanes, which he, lucky Doc-Duck, actually flies as some sort of a co-pilot every now and then.

Not exactly a rather common hobby for a retired university professor, huh?

As stated in the title of this blog, I didn't really know that much about his background as a distinguished marine biologist myself - until now, that is.

Now, shark ethologist and conservationist Ila France-Porcher has published Part 1 of an in-depth biography of "Doc" Gruber in the latest issue of the X-Ray Magazine of which she is a regular contributing editor in shark related matters.

This on-line dive magazine has been ranked best in the world ("The best ranked scuba publication in the world on Alexa.com since 2009 - Winner of the MTA Press Awards 2011"). Ila's article will most certainly captivate all those who know the "Doc" or heard about him - a very large international fan club, no question about it.

Just as one would expect from Ila as a multi-talented editor and accomplished book author, she has produced a beautifully written and extremely well-founded story of Doc's life as a professional. Here it is, enjoy the read:

Now Helson came out with some incredibly attractive models in bronze (left on the above image). To me, they don't look like regular watches anymore - they look like submarine instruments, and their appearance is reminiscent of hard hat diving helmets which means a lot to me: It's helmet divers back in the mid-forties that ignited my lifelong passion for the underwater world.

Thus, apart from being extremely tough, masculinely heavy and dependable pieces of horology engineering at its best, just looking at the Helson bronze watches evoke intense feelings of pure nostalgia in my sea of early memories.... To this day I regret not having dived with a dry suit, led boots, and an air hose attached to one of those glorious bronze helmets... :-)

Back to the topic: As any other bronze object, the Helson bronze watches tend to acquire an incomparably beautiful patina after a short while, which is what makes them so very special.

Chiara: Intelligent, sensitive, loving, and lovable - a real 'mensch'...

I just discovered this blog in my drafts box - simply forgot to publish it. Even though Chiara died 6 months ago, I feel that I have to honor her by posting the blog, however belatedly.

I have had Chiara since August 2008, and we grew quietly and deeply to be emotionally dependent on each other. There is not much more I want to say about our special relationship, except that both Lupi and I are devastated after losing Chiara.

Lupi, her close and only companion during the last 6 years, will definitely miss her more than me.

The guards of our gated community who looked after Chiara during my absence told me that she would not eat anymore for no apparent reason, and as a consequence "simply" passed away within some four days.

Had I been around, it might not have happened as I would obviously have taken her to our vet right away. On the other hand, perhaps it was time for Chiara to exit the world. She must have been 12 years old when she died - that would correspond to 84 years of human life.

I will miss Chiara, and will try to comfort Lupi by being especially attentive to him and giving him more goodies to ease the pain that fate had in store for him. Often, it is the survivors, not the departed, that are to be mourned....

I promise not to post family pics anymore...

PJ and I first met about one month ago – we had heard about each other for a couple of years, but the trips never coincided. In November we spent countless hours in the water together and did a lot of freediving. PJ was extremely gentle with animals and one of the best shark divers that I have met – not to mention an avid freediver…the tank would come off whenever he had a chance.

Above water he was an extremely kind and positive person – he radiated good vibes. PJ will be greatly missed by many. Thoughts are with his family and the Dolphin Dream crew.

In the Bahamas, Green Turtle Cay - image not being able to dive more than two feet without feeling like your head is going to blowup and your eyes popping out of your skull. It has been a tease having the reefs in the backyard and not being able to go out and play.

Taking sinus medicine and trying to clear cavities with saltwater to no avail. On the bright side, I have some time to get over the infection. On the not so bright side we have been stuck eating pasta for the last three days.

And to top it off the locals have told us the the reefs are being overfished...

Discovery Shark Week 2014

Back in the late 80's through most of the 90s and early 2000s I was excited around this time to be able to watch Shark Week...but for the last 10 years it has been one disappointing season after another. It seems like this year will not be any better - the promos have been horrible, the stunts a joke, and the rolling of tiger sharks has no value what-so-ever.

While I will probably record the episodes - I will just skim through them, hoping that I may actually be pleasantly surprised by one or two episodes.

Found this article on USA Today thanks to David Shiffman - highly recommend following him on Twitter - he is calling out all the misinformation and bullshit that Discovery has been spewing out.

Neal Watson - King of Hypocrites

Neal Watson, President of the Bahamas Divers' Association and owner of Undersea Adventures, has done it again: He used the recent fatal dive accident in the Bahamas (Tiger Beach) once more to blast the foreign competition - US live-aboards that take divers to Tiger Beach - to promote Bahamian shark diving operations which include his own.

Why does Mr.Watson have to go public and talk about "negligence" and "incompetence" on the part of the US shark operator, Jim Abernethy, when it hasn't been clearly established yet what caused the death of the diver?

Does Mr. Watson, undoubtedly a very experienced diver, not realize that whilst diving, with or without sharks, has become a perfectly safe sport / hobby, "shit can still happen" as bluntly stated by Mike Neumann in a related blog?

I know Jim Abernethy, and I know that he runs a very tight ship, literally. A bit too tight for me, to be honest, as he would not allow me to free-dive at Tiger Beach. Because of this restriction I never went diving with him.

I certainly don't wish Neal Watson a fatal accident on one of his trips, but I wonder how he would handle such a mishap... But that is a moot question.

What really bugs me, though, is that Mr. Watson is now doing precisely what he vociferously accused other shark-dive operators, obviously all competitors of him, of: 'Recklessly putting his guests' lives at risk' by diving cage-less with "potentially dangerous" sharks such as big hammerheads, lemon sharks (!!), and, of course, tiger sharks which in my (and many others') opinion are "potentially" no more dangerous than a well maintained car.

Only Neal Watson knows what made him change his mind, and I don't want to speculate upon it, although it wouldn't surprise me at all that money, money, money was the motive to go cage-less so as to not lose the business to the competition. He must have recognized that nobody wants to be behind bars watching sharks, except when they happen to be great whites.

I called Mr. Watson a "vulture"*) when he maliciously tried to sink Jim Abernethy and his tiger shark operation after the most unfortunate Markus Groh accident back in early 2008.

I now appoint Neal Watson "King of Hypocrites" in the shark dive industry. However, despite my utter displeasure at his two-faced attitude, I wish him well - he is an old fart, and as such deserves some empathy from a fart his age. :-)

Thus: "Long live the King of Hypocrites!!"....

Also, to be fair: Watson is probably sincere trying to establish some standard safety guidelines within the boundaries of the Bahamian waters. However, and to finish this here, I just can't escape the feeling that envy is the other, equally strong driving force behind his campaign against the gringo rivals.

Your classification of 'dangerous' sharks (Jim's sharks) versus 'safe' sharks (your sharks) is not only ludicrous, but shows quite clearly what your ulterior motives are.

Everybody in the trade suspects that you are using this most unfortunate incident to promote your shark operations with 'safe' Caribbean Reef Sharks while trying to eliminate a highly successful and internationally acclaimed competitor.

You are a seasoned diver, as am I (I started diving back in 1955) - you should be a bit more relaxed. Stuart Cove has not had an accident, not that I know of, and he must have organized thousands of shark dives with Caribbean Reef Sharks in baited situations. So, Mr. Watson, what is your problem??

I have freedived both in Tiger Beach and Aliwal Shoal (South Africa) with tiger sharks - no cages. I have to say that I NEVER felt threatened by these magnificent creatures in any way. Now, you could say, why does an old fart like me (I am 67) freedive with tiger sharks? Well, that is what I love to do. And let me tell you: I am not a dare-devil; I just enjoy swimming with sharks as do countless other ocean enthusiasts.

I would never ever dive within the confinement of a cage, not with tiger sharks, not with whites sharks. I would not even scuba dive with sharks - I only freedive with them.

People should decide for themselves what they want to do. If they want to take risks - fine. But who are you to tell others what to do, and how to do it?

I have to ask you again: Why are you so much against cage-free shark diving? And why are you crusading against it? Many thousands of divers dive with sharks all over the world - the safety record is as high as it can be. Unfortunatley, Markus Groh got bitten and died from the wounds.

As much as we are saddened by this deplorable accident, we should neither demonize the sharks nor should we blame people like Jim Abernethy who have done more than most in introducing thousands and thousands of divers to the realm of the lords of the sea.

Whoever has the privilege to dive with sharks becomes a shark conservationist. Shark conservation is, to Jim, more than just a fashionable slogan: He has dedicated his life to it by taking people out to swim with sharks so they can feel closer to nature which is what shark diving is all about.

We are disconnected from nature, and sharks represent, in a way, the paradise we have lost a long time ago.

Is my Underwater Photography "Art"?

A craft, perhaps, but Ila France-Porcher considers my shark photography to be artistic.

I have to admit, false modesty aside, that I feel quite flattered by it, as I admire multi-talented Ila for being an accomplished author and a sensitive painter*), a very professional and competent non-academic shark ethologist, and, last not least, a deeply passionate shark lover and eloquent shark advocate.

So, having her review my work is indeed a much valued privilege, and it fills me with honor. I cannot say it any other way.

If you, dear Reader, haven't heard of Ila France-Porcher, you ought to know also that she is one of those rare shark people who have such a healthy ego that it doesn't have to be constantly pumped up like a cracked bicycle tire... She has neither an organization behind her, nor is she her own PR-manager; she is she, and doesn't need to be more than that.

Here is Ila's article as published in the latest international issue of the prestigious X-Ray-Magazine.

*) I have one of Ila's Tiger Shark paintings that captured the essence of tiger sharks far better than any of the best photographs of these incredibly expressive, strong, yet most gentle creatures I have ever seen - including my own images, of course... :-) :-)

Jean-Francois Avenier - known to everybody as "Jifa" (1947 - 2014)

Jifa and Machin, Hermanus 2010

I am very sorry and sad to have to report that Jifa has died from a cancer he fought most courageously and discreetly during the last months.

The illness was diagnosed in August 2013, and although the prognosis didn't look good at that time, there was some hope that with the usual palliative therapies (chemo and radiation), to which Jifa was subjected, he could still have a few relatively good years to look forward to.

Both Jifa and I developed a deep friendship even though we have met only twice, in South Africa (in 2008 and 2010).

We knew that becoming very close and congenial friends at our age had to be something special as it happens in general rarely, if at all, in the autumn of life.

We were already over sixty, me closer to seventy, when we began to communicate electronically on a shark platform with each other, both staunch individualists and not really gregarious, except with folks that we liked and felt close to. Grandiloquent people could not only not impress us in the least - we avoided them like the plague.

We did not always agree on issues that seemed important to us but we fully respected each other's opinions. That type of tolerance and mutual appreciation of diverging points of view is what basically constituted our friendship, as any solid relationship.

Apart from having shared many passions such as photography and diving with sharks, what really made us soul brothers was our self-deprecating sense of humor and an abhorrence for conceited, pathologically ego-driven individuals within, and without, the international shark community.

Rather than writing a "real" obituary, which I know Jifa would have totally disapproved of, here are three blogs I wrote in 2008 and in 2010 after our last encounter which I believe pretty much describe this intelligent, sensitive, yet extremely strong-minded and life-loving human being.

Only a few months ago, I was toying with the idea of going back to Hermanus next year just to spend a few weeks with Jifa and his dogs "Machin" and "Cheyenne", and perhaps dive with tiger sharks, depending on his state of health.

Not anymore, as I have no other reason to travel all the way to South Africa knowing that he won't be able to pick me up at the airport with a big grin and his 5.7 liter, 400 hp driving machine he loved so much.

My world has become a little colder now that Jifa has left it...

Tiger Beach - and an end in sight, unfortunately.

It almost hurts to state that. But, yes, I have decided that this year's November back-to-back trips to that literally breathtaking place will be my last shark dives.

"My last shark dives"... Sounds awful to me, kind of like a terminal disease... Well, at least I can say, not proudly but anecdotally, that I have been diving on one breath of air for sixty years which probably makes me one of the oldest free-diving farts in the world.

Sure, now that old age - hey, I am 73!! - and the aftereffects of my stomach cancer five years ago are taking their tolls, I could start switching to diving with Scuba tanks. But that would be like betraying my life-long tenet that free-diving is the only way to get closer to, and feel homier in, that incomparably magic of the blue world of silence....

I am thankful that I have had the incredible privilege to dive and interact with the most gracious, gentle, intelligent, and sensitive sharks during the last eight years: The tiger sharks, along with the great white sharks probably the most misunderstood and vilified "requiem" sharks.

I cannot express how excited I am knowing that I will be seeing "Emma" or "Smiley" once again, and, frankly, at the same time I don't know yet how I will cope bidding them and the other striped girls good-bye for good... All I know is that I will sorely miss them.

The trips I am on, as always aboard the legendary Dolphin Dream, spacious and comfy, are not fully booked yet, there are still a few spots open but experience has shown that those vacancies won't last long.

Thus, if someone reading this should feel the irresistible urge to accompany me to celebrate life, the ocean, and those magnificent creatures, please contact the arranger of the trips, my good old pal Dom Macan, a truly passionate diver, both cosmopolitan and British to the core.

I have selected this image as it transmits - as 'eloquently' as a photograph can - the bond I would like to believe she and I have established interacting with each other, lovingly and respectfully. Just look at the way she looked at me when I took her picture - doesn't it say it all?

And when I look at the image myself - will I, indeed, could I REALLY stick to my decision to call tiger shark diving quits?..... :-)

Sharks: To touch or not to touch them - that is not a question for Mike Neumann.

Mike Neumann will not compromise. Divers who touch sharks, worse: ride them, are, in his opinion, submarine perverts. He calls them 'Shark Molesters'.

I have a slightly different opinion. I say: If you have a lot of experience diving with sharks, have learned to understand their distinctive body language, and, most importantly, if you love and respect these animals, actually all animals, then I believe it's OK to touch, even caress sharks.

Nurse Shark love. These sharks are very gentle if you treat them gently.

Riding them is a different story. Sharks are not horses or bulls, and even former rodeo riders should not manipulate sharks abusively, like turning them upside down or jam Go-Pro cameras on a wand into their mouths (I have seen such totally unacceptable behavior during my last tiger shark trip).

Further down is a brillant article wherein Mike puts forward his thoughts about the subject. Not only do I hold him in the highest esteem for his convincing arguments, but I really believe that his way of introducing his underwater guests to sharks as a responsible and sensible diving operator should become standard protocol in the shark diving industry.

I am sure that after having read the interview with Mike you will agree with me that this is how shark operators should run their businesses - always allowing certain exceptions, of course...... otherwise, how would I be able to go back to where I could caress my beloved striped girls again?.... :-)

William Winram - New World Record 145 meters

While this may come a little late - I just saw the video below - William Winram achieved a new world record in variable weight (complete story here). I first met William in 2008 while diving in South Africa with Tiger Sharks. At that point my old man was in his late 60s and putting in more water time than anyone I knew - he could easily be in the water 9 hours without flinching. I will always remember William saying - when I "grow-up" I want to be like your dad, have the energy and the passion.

It seems like William is doing just that - by no means a young buck - William continues to push the limits all while being humble. I always liked William for those reasons, he is a good person and his mind and heart are in the right place. Since 2008, William has also become a strong advocate for sharks.

.... I have written several posts about my new old-age love Wolfie, a blog about my father. Have I perhaps overlooked my son?

Not at all.

How could I ??? Look at this young man - he is the very best son a sensible father could wish for, by far....

Maybe I took Felix for granted since he and Carmen made me an "Opa", but he was, is, always close to me.

I think about him EVERY single day which isn't surprising. When Felix was born a little over 37 years ago I immediately knew that he was the very purpose of my life. I didn't have to philosophize anymore. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy thinking about death, and thus preparing to die, which is, according to Michel de Montaigne, the essence of philosophy... :-)

Felix was the sun and the center of my private universe that gave me the raison d'etre, but also warmth and an existential joy that was never interrupted, not even by the slightest hint of a feeling of becoming sated with the role of a parent.

Simply by being there, Felix illuminated my often stony path during the many years that have since gone by.

I know that Felix feels the same when Wolfie entered his life. As I observe him interacting with Wolfie, my heart and my eyes overflow, and I could drown in an ocean of tenderness. It reminds me of the precious times I spent with Felix when he was Wolfie's age.

Again, why should I, a passionate image maker, try to look for adequate words when you could see, literally, what I mean?

It's hard to adequately describe how much in love an old fart like me can be at the last stage of his life... In such cases, as the well-known Chinese proverb goes, an image will say it all.

Now, I ask you, dear reader, when you look at this picture: Is it not impossible not to be madly in love with this little "Mensch" who happens to be my one and only grand-child??...

Yearning for my father - or: The dates I will never forget.

December 8, 1905, the birthday of my father, and the day he died at age 58, June 22, 1964.

Even now, as a grand-father, I miss my father, no less than back then when my mother called me to say she had 'bad news' for me...

It is not too long ago, perhaps 20 years or so, that I realized that, deep down, I have never left my childhood, and that I will always remain my father's little boy who looked up to him, loved him, and felt secure and protected in his presence.

Yet, our relationship was not always harmonious, not even when I was a small kid.

My father was not a children's father; children had few rights in his traditional world-view, and what mattered most to him was that they had to behave, be obedient and well-mannered, make a bow or curtsey to grown-ups, and never challenge in any way the authority of parents and teachers.

Given his education and background, my father felt Prussian to the bone. He was raised in Wilhelmine Berlin by a father who was a staunch monarchist and who believed in unconditional loyalty to the fatherland, discipline, modesty, frugality - virtues that marked my father for life.

It was, thus, absolutely normal that my father considered corporal punishment as a reliable and effective educational method. So, yes, I got spanked when my father, and my mother, thought a wrongdoing had to be corrected.

Obviously, being hit by a strong hand on my butt hurt me, and the utter helplessness that went with it touched deep layers of my soul. However, I won't forget that my father once told me, quite moved, that spanking me caused him much pain - an admission I then felt was sincere.

As much as my father wanted to give the impression of being 'tough' and what he thought to be 'manly', he was a sensitive and vulnerable human being who would not harm a fly. Hunting was to him, for example, a most brutal and senseless 'sport'. He accepted my spear-fishing because he probably thought that fish feel no pain.

My adolescence put a strain on our relationship which is what what typifies any father-son bond, no matter how close.

Yet, compared to most of my German friends who had seemingly insurmountable problems communicating with their fathers in an open manner, which was quite common in those days, I felt privileged to have a dad with whom I could discuss just about everything that went through the mind of a 15 year old youngster reaching puberty, and who was beginning to be intrigued about the metaphysical mysteries of our existence.

I could even entrust my dad with the most private emotional and sexual anxieties which, as I remember, could be overpowering occasionally. There was no subject that was taboo for me to talk about and seek his always comforting advice. In that respect, my father was a wonderful father. His compassionate understanding for human imperfections more than out-weighed his own short-comings.

I was 23 when my father died, and although I did not believe in God, not even then, I somehow hoped for a reunion in an after-life. That won't happen, as I now know. But I will carry the memory of my young old man alive in my heart until its last beat.

And I will keep missing him beyond....

After all, who am I to be so certain that there is no life after death?..... :-)

"Smiley" - the rising star of Tiger Beach.

With about 10-11 ft in length, she might not be fully grown but she is definitely an adult tiger shark who commands respect; she is serene and inquisitive; and above all she is most graceful, beautiful, and absolutely lovable.

When she looks at you, as she does in the above image, you will be completely mesmerized by her striking facial expression. She has what we call in German a "Charakterkopf" (literally: 'character head').

It is impossible not to recognize her because her lower jaw has been disfigured while on an angler's hook.

She is "Smiley".

It is also hardly impossible not to meet "Smiley" at her beach. As soon as a dive boat anchors in the Tiger Beach area, you could almost bet that she will be on the spot sooner or later, mostly sooner. This year, I haven't missed her not even one single day.

I met "Smiley" back in November 2008 for the first time when she looked pretty much like any other female tiger shark. It was, however, not difficult to identify her even then by the prominent dark spots on her belly and the inside of her pectoral fins.

You could tell that "Smiley" was quite confident in the presence of divers. She never displayed any type of boldness, let alone aggressiveness. She was what tiger sharks generally are: Curious and gentle. When I say 'curious' I don't mean what a lot of even so-called experienced shark divers stupidly claim, namely that sharks always look at you to check out "whether you are prey".

The first year after she was hooked and mutilated in the process, "Smiley" was extremely wary of divers - as if she related her trauma to humans. Fortunately, she eventually regained her confidence in divers. Her being hand-fed by the crew members of the "Dolphin Dream" might have also contributed to winning back her trust in 'humanity', as it were...

The large shark in the upper right side is "Smiley" approaching one of the hand-feeders.

Who knows, "Smiley" might be related to famous "Emma" - I wouldn't be surprised as both dignified ladies have a lot in common. What I can say with certainty, though, is that "Smiley" is definitely on her way to becoming the new star of Tiger Beach.

This is not the first time I wrote about "Smiley" - have a look at the blog I posted back in November 2011.

At any rate, this is a propitious opportunity to wish "Smiley" and "Emma", and all their relatives and friends, a long and happy shark life.

To touch or not to touch...

When it comes to sharks, this seemingly never ending controversy stirs up a lot of thoughts and emotions.

Here is a photograph of me caressing a lovely tiger shark taken by Kay-Burn Lim, an Australian professional photographer whom I had the pleasure to meet during my recent Tiger Beach trip.

I quite like the image as I believe it eloquently transmits the essence of my feelings for sharks.

For many divers and non-divers touching sharks is a thorny issue. Not for me. I just do it because I love to touch sharks the way I like to touch people I am fond of.

Sure, that sounds rather simplistic but then again, I am a simple minded guy, and as such I do not waste any thoughts ruminating whether it is right or wrong to touch wild animals. I leave those lofty, sometimes even pseudo-scholarly discussions to those self-professed lovers of nature who believe have the "authority" to pass intelligent judgments on that matter.

Let me just say this: I do not "ride" sharks, holding on to their dorsal fins to let them pull me through the water or, much worse, grabbing their tail fins as I often see totally insensitive, disrespectful and mindless rough diamonds do it. I touch sharks gently, let their bodies glide through my hands, and enjoy the physical contact with another creature.

At any rate: It is my firm opinion that only rather experienced shark divers should, rather could, engage in this closest type of interaction with sharks. Sharks speak with their bodies. You have to learn that language to understand these gentle, still widely misunderstood wild animals.

If you have never dived with sharks, don't you think it's about time to do it? Initially without touching them?..... :-) :-)
