At Oceanside Village we now clean our rooms using a steam cleaner. The main advantage of a steam cleaner is it is Non Toxic with steam cleaning killing 99.99% of bacteria and it doesn’t require the use of toxic and potentially harmful chemicals such as bleach and ammonia. Only heat and water are used meaning your villa remains free from chemical residue and pollution, so you can feel assured when you stay and Oceanside Village that your room is cleaned by steam.

Denham – Shark Bay

Denham is the only town for the Shire of Shark Bay in Western Australia. Denham has a population of around 700. Denham is the most westerly town in Australia.

The Denham area was the first part of the Australian mainland discovered by European sailors. On 25 October 1616, Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog and crew came unexpectedly upon “various islands, which were, however, found uninhabited.” He made landfall at an island now called Dirk Hartog Island off the coast of Shark Bay. Hartog spent three days examining the coast and nearby islands.

Denham is in the World Heritage listed area of Shark Bay and is an awesome place to have a holiday. It has a relaxed feel, very safe. There is a lot to do here with Steep Point, Dirk Hartog Island, Francois Peron National Park and Monkey Mia all close by.

Facilities

A comprehensive range of facilities are available in Denham including:

Accommodation – motel rooms, units, cabins, self-contained accommodation, bed and breakfasts, caravan parks, backpackers and campgrounds

Shops – including food outlets, newsagent, chemist, souvenir shops and car hire.

Service stations and mechanics

Restaurants and cafes

Tour – fishing charters, 4WD and scenic tours and flights

Airport – 10min drive from town

Post Office

Department of Environment and Conservation office

Shire of Shark Bay office

Department of Fisheries office

Boat ramps

Jetties

Yesterday we where down at the inlet to little lagoon, someone there had just spotted a stone fish, which he then showed us. If it wasn’t for him showing us we would never of seen it, as they are very well camouflaged as can been seen by this first photograph. Can you pick where it is?

Stone fish

Stone fish- It is in the middle of the two rocks in the front

The picture below shows one when it is disturbed.

Angry Stone Fish

The stonefish have thirteen sharp dorsal spines located on their backs. These spines are fed with toxic venom (two venom sacs per spine) via 26 glands lying below the skin on the creature’s back. The venom is released when pressure is placed on the spine, like when you step on one. The venomous spines of the stonefish have the potential to pentrate rubber soled shoes or sandals. If you are unlucky enough to be stung by one, you will feel the sting almost immediately and may lose consciousness. Other side effects are swelling, irregular breathing, reduction in blood pressure and paralysis.

It is a good idea to wear shoes when wading around in the water especially Little Lagoon or the inlet coming into it. Don’t be afraid, just be aware.

The road trip, commonly called the roadie. We have been doing it for generations, your parents, their parents and your great grandparents all did road trips, I bet as kids you went on road trips, mainly because it was to expensive to fly. As it has become cheaper to fly now days we don’t tend to do as many road trips, I think this is sad because a generation of kids are missing out on this great tradition.

There are heaps of hidden gems that you only get to see if you are driving, you get to touch, feel, smell, hear and taste more of this awesome country when you hit the road. In Western Australia we have many hidden gems up and down the coast which you never get to see unless you drive, really a holiday shouldn’t so much be about the destination but more about the journey, the thrill and excitement in getting somewhere special, that feeling that not many people have been here, that is what a road trip is all about. So if you live in Perth,Geraldton, Albany, Denmark, Broome or where ever next time you think about a holiday think about a road trip, hit the road and spend your money local, see this awesome state of ours and be blown away with what we have here in Western Australia.

Taste it, Feel it, See it, Smell it, Hear it

Where do I go?

Shark Bay, Karijinni, Broome, The Kimberly, The Pilbara, Margaret River it doesn’t really matter just hit the road.
