A couple weeks ago, Zazzle.com launched their on-demand skate deck printing service. (If you’re not familiar with Zazzle, it’s a site where an artist can upload designs to be sold on shirts, shoes, postage stamps, etc. Then Zazzle creates a product only when someone orders it. This allows the artist to sell their shiz without worrying about creating too little/too much product to meet demand.) Shortly thereafter, Artsprojekt announced that their teaming up with Zazzle to provide some kick ass art for the new decks. Artsprojekt has some pretty heavy hitters like OBEY, Mars-1, and Dalek among many others.

As if that wasn’t enough art/skate awesomeness, on Monday I got the latest popdeck.com (Threadless but for skatedecks) newsletter announcing that they’re teaming with big name artists. We’re talking No Pattern, MWM Graphics, Go Media and of course many others.

I’m really curious about the quality of these decks. I’ve heard the Zazzle decks as being comparable to giclee prints. It would be pretty impressive if it’s true. Coincidence that these two companies did this at the same time or was it all planned? Either way, we win.
There are few things that I know of that combine illustration, papercraft, furniture design, and a clever idea into one little package. Milk Gone Bad is a series of lamps that, when turned off, just look like a plain white milk carton. But, when turned on, the lamps show the germy worlds brought about by the rotten milk.

The lamp comes in 8 designs, all of which can be seen at thedieline.com. I particularly enjoy design #8 where the little germy guys are trying to escape the carton.

Designer Danny Yount has posted the opening titles for RocknRolla on his site. Rock N Rolla is the new film by director/writer Guy Ritche, the man behind the classics Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Hopefully RocknRolla will be a return to form for him because Revolver just didn’t do it for me. It was just a tad convoluted, had some unnecessary animation thing in the middle, and the end was pretty predictable. I didn’t even bother seeing that Madonna movie.
Danny Yount has an amazing body of work which includes the end credits for Iron Man, titles for Six Feet Under, and the opening titles for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which, in my opinion, are the best looking titles of the past decade. Yount’s work is truly inspiring to me as someone who is getting into the field of motion design but I also love the fact it is appreciated by non designers as well.
