News Item on Internships: How to Turn that IT Internship into an IT Job

How to Turn that IT Internship Into an IT Job

....Using a few tips from IT recruiters, students can maximize their chances of converting an unpaid internship into a full-time job offer. While internships are a great way to get your foot in the door of an organization, not all interns are offered full-time positions. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, one out of every three new hires from the 2007 graduating class landed their first job with a company they'd previously interned for. With that in mind, the article summarizes what to do – and what not to do – during an internship.

Most importantly, you must know what kind of internship you have and the expectations your employer has surrounding that internship. Some organizations use internships as a form of campus recruiting where there is a direct path from internship to full-time employment. Others view it differently, as more of an outreach effort to local universities. Secondly, you will need to network aggressively. If someone is rooting for you within the organization, you will have a better chance of convincing an employer to hire you on a full-time basis. Finally, you should use every opportunity possible to learn additional skills.

However, don’t annoy your manager by lobbying incessantly for a job. When you're in an internship, you have to know your place. Lobbying for a full-time position right away is almost a sure way not to be hired. While networking is encouraged during an internship, don’t gossip about other employees or date a co-worker. Also, you shouldn’t slack off during your idle time or become self-important in the way that you interact with co-workers....

Thankfully.. we pay ODCSSS interns... !

Workshop Theme:
"...recent years the research area of social mobile and networking technologies has made rapid progress, due to the increasing development of new mobile technologies and the widespread usage of the Internet as a new platform for social interactions. Social applications of mobile and networking technologies serve groups of people in shared activities, in particular geographically dispersed groups who are collaborating on some task in a shared context. An important characteristic of those social applications is the continuous interaction between people and technology to achieve a common purpose. Again social applications tend to be large-scale and complex, involving difficult social and policy issues such as those related to privacy and security access..."

Week 12: ODCSSSS in ERCIM News (Europe)

ERCIM News is the magazine of ERCIM. It reports on joint actions of the ERCIM partners, and aims to reflect the contribution made by ERCIM to the European Community in Information Technology. Through short articles and news items, it provides a forum for the exchange of information between the institutes and also with the wider scientific community. ERCIM News is published quarterly. The printed edition of the current number has a circulation of 11,000 copies.

This article on ODCSSS appeared in ERCIM News 70, the July 2007 issue with a Special theme: Service-Oriented Computing.

Science Foundation Ireland funded Online Dublin Computer Science Summer School

24 International Research Undergraduate Projects in Ireland for "Technologies for Aiding Human Memory".

ODCSSS the Online Dublin Computer Science Summer School is a paid research internship program for undergraduate students funded in part by the Science Foundation Ireland under their UREKA program. ODCSSS is a four-year collaborative internship program between the School of Computer Science and Informatics at the University College Dublin and the School of Computing at the Dublin City University.

The 2007 thematic focus of "Technologies for Aiding Human Memory" grew out of our experiences with the program in 2006. The 2006 students suggested the need for undergraduates to see a social impact from their work, not just academic results. In 2006 there were 17 students in the program, which has grown to 24 students in 2007. This year we had over 100 applications from around the world. In 2007 we have students coming from Universities in Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand and the USA. The 2008 program opens for applications from 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students in late 2007. Successful candidates are offered a tax-free scholarship of €300 per week (for 12 weeks) along with travel support.

The primary goal of this research program is to afford exceptional undergraduate students the opportunity to participate and contribute to exciting yet challenging research projects and to inspire them to go on to undertake research careers. Example projects in 2007 include, "Reminding Short-Term Memory Sufferers to Complete Routine Tasks" and "Using Multiple Sensors to Determine Posture". Past projects include "TableTop Tissue Micro Array Visualisation" and "Forensic speaker identification".

While focusing on world-class research, this internship provides the participants with exposure to a distributed, cooperative and collaborative research environment facilitated and supported by exchanges of the entire summer school cohort. Along with research seminars, research training, industrial lab visits, industrial research events, social events and research management seminars including intellectual property, patenting and commercialization.

Link:
http://www.odcsss.ie/

Week 12: MIT DARPA urban challenge project talk @ UCD

Today we had a talk for a visiting academic who changed the schedule
for this talk so the ODCSSS students could attend before the end of
their internship.

"Team MIT: DARPA Urban Challenge 2007"

Speaker: John J. Leonard MIT (http://dgc.mit.edu)
Title: Team MIT: DARPA Urban Challenge 2007
Time: Wed, Aug 22nd, 2007, 1.00 pm
Venue: Complex & Adaptive Systems Laboratory UCD
Directions: http://casl.ucd.ie/
UCD CASL, 8 Belfield Office Park, Beaver Row, Clonskeagh, Dublin 4

Abstract:
This talk will provide an overview of MIT's entry in the 2007 DARPA
Urban Challenge. The goal of this effort is to produce a car that can
drive autonomously in traffic. Our team has developed a novel
strategy for using a large number of inexpensive sensors mounted on
the vehicle periphery. Lidar, camera, and radar data streams are
processed using an innovative, locally smooth state representation
that provides robust perception for real-time autonomous control. A
resilient planning and control architecture has been developed for
driving in traffic, comprised of an innovative combination of well-
proven algorithms for mission planning, situational planning,
situational interpretation, and trajectory control. These innovations
have been incorporated in two new robotic vehicles equipped for
autonomous driving in urban environments. Extensive testing has been
performed on a DARPA site visit course, and preparations are underway
to participate in DARPA's National Qualifying Event in October 2007.

Joint work with Seth Teller, Jon How, Emilio Frazzoli, David Barrett,
David Moore, Edwin Olson, Albert Huang, Yoshi Kuwata, Luke Fletcher,
Justin Teo, Gaston Fiore, Stefan Campbell, Troy Jones, and Keoni
Maheloni.

Biography:
John J. Leonard is Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering at
MIT and a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). His research addresses the problems
of navigation and mapping for autonomous mobile robots. He holds the
degrees of B.S.E.E. in Electrical Engineering and Science from the
University of Pennsylvania (1987) and D.Phil. in Engineering Science
from the University of Oxford (formally 1994). He studied at Oxford
under a Thouron Fellowship and Research Assistantship funded by the
ESPRIT program of the European Community. Prof. Leonard joined the
MIT faculty in 1996, after five years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow and
Research Scientist in the MIT Sea Grant Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
(AUV) Laboratory. He has participated in numerous field deployments of
AUVs, including under-ice operations in the Arctic and several major
experiments in the Mediterranean. He has served an associate editor
of the IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering and of the IEEE
Transactions on Robotics and Automation. He is the recipient of an
NSF Career Award (1998), an E.T.S. Walton Visitor Award from Science
Foundation Ireland (2004), and the King-Sun Fu Memorial Best IEEE
Transactions on Robotics Paper Award (2006).

NovaUCD is the Innovation and Technology Transfer Centre at UCD.
NovaUCD is located in a magnificent mid-18th century house in the Belfield Innovation Park on the University campus. The concept for the innovation and technology transfer centre was to restore the original house as the centrepiece of a complex of subsidiary buildings that surround it. NovaUCD works with UCD researchers in identifying the most appropriate business model for the commercialisation of the IP which may involve licensing to commercial partners or the creation of spin-off companies. Our guide was guide bemused as to how 24 people from over 14 different countries would all know each other and all be interested in Computers! Yes, ODCSSS it's normally but it is an interesting experience.
Body sensing has many applications in the areas of sports, medicine, gaming, and pervasive computing. Nanthana Trakarnratanakul (King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand) will be working on sensing and recognizing body postures and movements using synthesized data from multiple inertial sensing units. The project will take two directions: first, inertial sensing units will be used to make rehabilitation exercises fun by using specific prescribed movements as inputs to a computer game. The game parameters will encourage patients to perform correct movements to aid their recovery, without excessive instruction or expert assistance. Second, she will use machine learning and pattern recognition techniques to discover specific characteristics of healthy and unhealthy gait, and develop tools for gait analysis using these features.

On June 6th ODCSSS 2007 had it's research kick off event in Newman House. Over 50 people attend the day during different times. Dr. Aaron Quigley and Dr. Gabriel Muntean the ODCSSS co-directors provided an introduction, history and welcome to ODCSSS 2007. 22 of the 24 ODCSSS students along with their mentors and supervisors attended and presented introductions and project overviews. Along with this we had talks from Dr. Betsy Keath (SFI) on "The UREKA Experience - Is It As Good As it Sounds?", Richard White (Microsoft) on the "Imagine Cup - The world's premier student technology competition", Dr. Alexander Troussov (IBM) on "R&D and student opportunities in IBM Dublin" and Dr. Lorcan Coyle on "Doing Research". [Some Student Photos:flickr]

The day ended with a tour of Newman House, a capstone and a social event. The tour of Newman house which consists of two Georgian houses, pointed out many fine aspects of these houses and some of Dublin's finest 18th century plasterwork. Our capstone talk from Prof. Alan Smeaton (AIC/CDVP) on "Multi-disciplinary & collaborative research: pushing to your edges" demonstrated the opportunities from inter-disciplinary research. Our social event concluded the day in O'Neills Suffolk street where all the students in DCU and UCD along with some UREKA supplement students got to know each other in a social setting.

Students described this day as a "informative and enjoyable day" and "I thought that the launch event was a lot of fun. I got to get to know the other students better and some of the faculty as well. It was really interesting to hear what all the other students were doing. Of course, I'd read the project descriptions when I was applying to the program, but I'd forgotten what most of the projects were by that time. I thought the talks by Lorcan and Alan were very good, too.
2007 Projects in Focus: 11 Memoir:

Mukul Chandra Singh Bisht from IIT Guwahati (India) will be working on methods in the Memoir project to collect and tag pictures with context data such as location information. Take for example mobile phones which usually embed a camera as well as bluetooth facilities. Some GPS devices even smaller than mobile phones also have bluetooth facilities. So anyone with those devices has the ability to record pictures and their location at anytime. In addition, these devices along with other local data sources provide a rich array of context data sources which can be mined, fused and blended to create Context Rich User Content Sources (CRUCS). Mukul's work will then consist in enabling the phones and the GPS devices to communicate as well as embed the location information into the pictures. Users could then use that information to visualize on a map the places where the picture were taken along the principle of web sites like Flickr (http://www.flickr.com). Mukul will also investigate these and other pieces of Photo context data.

Finding the subject in photographs

Photographs are notoriously time-consuming to index -- and without indexing it's almost impossible to find images of particular subjects in a large collection. Meta-data tagging works well but requires that a human editor examines and consistently marks-up each image.

Photographs of three-dimensional scenes usually have a number of planes, with (for example) the foreground plane being "more interesting" than the background. Identifying these planes automatically would facilitate a number of operations including tagging and compositing.

Olga Murdoch will be working with Simon Dobson on an ODCSSS project looking at finding the various planes in an image. The idea is to use two cameras, separated by a known distance, to establish a fixed viewing geometry from which we can extract three-dimensional information about the composition of the scene. This can then be used within a standard photographic workflow.

-- Simon

Emil Varga, an IASTE recommended student from Serbia will be working on the Forget me Not(es) project in UCD. The project aims to explore how context information can be used as a basis for storing information online. Consider the situation where a colleague meets you while your on your way to a meeting. They give you some important information on an upcoming event that you do not have the time to file appropriately. At best you rush to file it away under some category or folder as you dash to your next task and when you go to look for the information you are unable to find it due to the lack of context in your filing system. The Forget me Not(es) project will consider temporal, location and social context as a basis for indexing digital information and aims to build a digital graffiti messaging service which allows users to store digital messages at physical locations.

2007 Projects in Focus: 16 Reminding Short-Term Memory Sufferers to Complete Routine Tasks.

Caitlin Lustig, on ODCSSS student from the University of Washington will be working on a project that seeks to extend work done by Intel on the iGlove. The user wears a glove, with an embedded RFID reader, which keeps track of any artifacts the user interacts with during their daily routine. Firstly our system will attempt to understand the context in which an artifact was last handled by the user. If a user is looking for an artifact (e.g., their car keys), the system will provide cues to to jog the user's memory, e.g., "you left your keys with your mobile phone". Secondly, this project will extend the work done by Intel on recognising routine tasks with an extension that looks at ongoing routines and alerts the user if there is a delay in their completion. This is particularly useful for helping users with short-term memory problems, since they often find it difficult to perform routine tasks if they have
too many steps. Caitlin will bring her experience from the University of Washington's RFID Ecosystem to this project.

For the 2007 program the ODCSSS organizers decided in August of 2006 to assign some of the non-SFI funded internships via the IAESTE Ireland program. Their general conference (19-26 Jan) has now initiated the search process in Austria, Serbia, Czech Republic, Thailand and Hong Kong for internships. We look forward to working with IAESTE to expand the scope of our program with them in years to come.
