MY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

The guy before me on the list introduces himself when I first get to the bar. He seems like a nice person. I watch him perform. He says he just got out of a mental institution. His entire set is about having sex with animals. Then they call my name. This is the first time I…

From other places you can actually see the Americana. It’s behind all the dark trees.

I couldn’t decide which of these I liked better. The softer light zoomed in or the sharper, more saturated and zoomed out version.

I was on a trip and didn’t realize until a week and a half into this nail polish job that my iPad can take photos (yes, I pat myself on the back for not giving in to smart phone ownership… yet) so I managed to get this before it all chipped off. I probably need a better top coat. I couldn’t make up my mind on which design to stick with so I did two. The black were supposed to be like scales but I was falling asleep while doing this and they sort of mashed together into something more abstract.

I found a few somewhat long video tutorials on how to make scales that made this seem sort of complicated. I went ahead and made these design steps into single images just in case anyone else wants to try them.

This is a project I had been working on a few months ago and completely forgot about until I noticed the folder today. At the time, I was working on making this into a flash animation (and also waiting for the real text to be put in) but then the project was cancelled. Anyway, I still think they look pretty cool so here they are!

In case it isn’t obvious it starts out raining furniture, then rains trees, then turns into an infographic. From there it would go on a crazy journey around the world to show that all our furniture comes from China and Italy and we’re polluting the Earth with our cheap Ikea furniture etc.

Fun fact I learned from listening to Freakonomics: You Are What You Eat pt 1 and 2: If you bought local organically grown produce every day for the rest of your life, it would still not make as much of an impact on carbon dioxide emissions contributing to climate change, as a typical American who eats cheap factory farmed meat, dairy, imported produce etc giving up cow products for only one day each week.

Chimay Ad in Beer Advocate

Beer Advocate (back cover!!!!):

It’s so great that we have these comfortable chairs, let’s use them more often! Nevermind! The next morning the chairs were all torn up. We thought maybe the neighbor’s cat did it. It’s not too terrible, the chairs were sort of cheap on craigslist.

Then I happened to see this yesterday. Naturally, I took some pictures before trying to scare it away. I hope its newly remodeled den is everything it wanted.

(I took these through our windows)

After the first time I chased it away:

The aftermath:

I chased it away at least five times. I think maybe it thought I was playing a game. In between running it would come to the front yard and straddle this wood. Kind of weird.

The end. We need new chairs now.

email ads

I have a habit of taking screenshots of the email ads I get from various stores and blogs with the thought that at some point in the future I could reference it for inspiration or help with typography.
I made a chevron rug for our place when we moved in but forgot I had taken a picture of it. The stripes are all a little uneven because

1.) I used the bootleg duct tape strips method instead of a stencil and

2.) halfway through I gave up on keeping them measured correctly

Either way it was super cheap and nicely fills in part of my living room. I used about 2 cans of Krylon spray paint and 1 of spray polyurethane on a 5.5’x8.5’ canvas drop cloth from home depot. I also found out last weekend that it’s machine washable (kind of a gamble but I kept it on cold then let it air dry and it was fine). The color is fading from daily wear but it would be easy to touch it up if I wanted.

These are some Mexican tiles we got from a gift shop in Arizona a few months ago and were only maybe $1.50 each.
