Host a Party and Raise money for a new Hayhurst Sound System!

PARTY BOARDS HAVE ARRIVED AT HAYHURST!!!!!!The deadline to HOST a Party Board is this Monday. A complete list of parties will be emailed Tuesday and posted in the Hayhurst hallway for sign-up on Wednesday morning!
To get things started I've got two parties set-up for January (Ballet class at the Multnomah Arts Center and Kick-Boxing Class at Fierce Fitness). Principal Froehlich has also agreed to a special 'party' - check back Sunday for the complete description!
All money raised funds the new sound system in the Cafetorium.

What Are Party Boards?
Party boards are a fundraiser for Hayhurst. A person hosts a party (see ideas below) and pays all expenses. A list of all the parties are put up on a board, folks sign up to attend a party or parties, pay the set fee, attend the party and have fun! The possibilities are endless! All money raised by party boards will fund a specific school-wide purchase (this time it’s an updated sound system in the Cafetorium).

The plan is to have several party board ‘sessions’ throughout the year. The first board list will be emailed Sunday, December 5 and posted on Monday, December 6.

Steps to Host a Party Board:1. Pick a party to host (see ideas below).

2. Pick a day and time to host your party.

3. Set a donation cost for your party.

4. Send an email to the party board coordinator with all of your party details (host name, host contact info, party name, date, start time, end time, cost, max attendees, location and a brief description) by the deadline.

5. The party board coordinator will post all party sign-up sheets in the school hallway on a board (and via email). People will sign up to attend a party or parties. For those that are not at school to sign-up, you can send an email to the party board coordinator or have a friend sign-up for you.

Come and learn about what’s going on at the school – ways you can get involved that can really help.

For example, a big THANK YOU needs to go out to Adrienne Smith and Lisa Cook for all of their hard work on the recent Hayhurst Book Sale. Adrienne, a new kindergarten mother, thought up the book sale idea, marketed it, and managed it all the way through to the binding of the books. Lisa Cook and she worked endless hours for the school – and what a GREAT impact it had!! Almost $2000 was raised for books for the school library.

Shine Children's Chorus Now Scheduling Auditions for Mid-Year Enrollment

Shine Chorus is a new music education and performance program for ages 9-12 that specializes in contemporary, popular music. Inspired by Glee and American Idol, our repertoire consists of pop, rock, hip-hop, and alternative music that is fun to sing. At the same time, we are committed to age-appropriate and positive messages, high musical standards, and the development of creativity and leadership in each child. Shine performers learn to sing from the heart while making friends, building self-confidence, and having lots of fun!

Our current repertoire includes Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) by Shakira, a mash-up of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over the Rainbow and I'm Yours by Jason Mraz, and The Fox in the Snow by Belle and Sebastian. New music for mid-year will feature selections from Michael Jackson, U2, B.o.B., Paramore, Radiohead, and more!

Our mission is to provide high-quality music education that is engaging and enriching for children as well as affordable for families. Tuition for December through June is $190. Financial aid options are available for families in need.

We are currently scheduling auditions for Saturday, December 4th, and the first rehearsal for new members will be December 12th. Our regular rehearsals take place Sundays 6-7:30 PM in SE Portland. Please visit our website for more information, or e-mail us at shinechorus@gmail.com

Parent reviews of Shine Chorus:

Shine Chorus is going really well. Eli is enjoying it very much, despite the fact that he is one of the only two boys there. He actually wrote an article about it, which will be in the next school newspaper, along with a picture. I like the choice of songs - fun, contemporary. I like how Lauren goes deeper than just singing with the kids, asking them to connect to the content, be expressive, etc. Jeremy is an amazing musician, who can play a drum while playing the piano simultaneously. It's also a great group of motivated kids.

The Shine Chorus is a wonderfully nurturing program of enthusiastic singers. From day one, Lauren the director has worked hard to foster a positive, cooperative group that already sounds amazing after just 4 rehearsals. They work hard at rehearsals but also have a lot of fun. Maya leaves each one excited about it and looking forward to the next. Lauren provides tools to help the students practice at home successfully, and they sing fun, modern songs the kids love. Right now they are learning Waka Waka by Shakira (the World Cup theme song), Fox in the Snow, and a very cool mash up of Somewhere over the Rainbow and I'm Yours (a Jason Mraz song). They already have two performances planned before Christmas. The kids are learning how to sing by ear, harmonize, and create their own expression at the same time. This is a level of instruction way beyond the value of the program's cost. We feel really lucky to have found it. Maya says, "I love it. They've picked so many really cool songs, and when you go there you can be all crazy--like really expressing yourself. It's really fun."

SPEAKING PART AUDITIONS: Will be held after school on:
Tuesday, November 16, 230-430PM, Room 18

SINGING AUDITIONS: Will be held after school on:
Wednesday, November 17, 230-430PM, Room 18

SINGING REHEARSALS: To be determined.

SPEAKING PARTS REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: After school rehearsals for speaking parts will be on Mondays and Fridays from 2:30 to 4:30PM, according to the following schedule:
November: 19, 29
December: 6, 10, 13 and 17
January: 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 24, 28, 31
February: 4, 7, 11, 14, 18

DANCING REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: Dance rehearsals for the performance will be on Thursdays from 630 to 8PM at the school, according to the following schedule:

November: None
December: 2, 9, 16
January: 6, 12, 20, 26
February: 3, 10, 17

Please note that dance is moved to two Wednesdays in January (12 and 26), due to other school events in the evenings on those Thursdays.

DRUMMING REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: Drum classes are on Thursdays from 230 to 330PM or from 330 to 430PM, according to the following schedule:

November: 18
December: 2, 9, 16
January: 6, 13, 20, 27
February: 3, 10, 17

ALL CAST REHEARSALS (speaking, dancing and drumming)
It will be necessary for the drummers and dancers to attend some of the Monday and Friday rehearsals in January and February, however the exact dates are not known at this moment for these 'ALL CAST' rehearsals.

The Middle School Service Clubs’ Neighborhood House Canned Food Barrel is located inside the schools front door. Please help us “Fill the Barrel!” this holiday season by brining a can, carton or box of food for this local, non-profit, social service provider. The Neighborhood House delivers innovative and life-changing programs for low-income people of all ages. They prepare children for success in school and life, help families move beyond poverty and support seniors to continue living independently for approximately 12,000 low-income children, families and seniors each year across the greater Portland area. Their clients represent a remarkably diverse mix of ethnicities and cultures, including many recent immigrants from Latin America, Africa, Russia and the Middle East.
