Chevy Runs Deep, for the first 100 years and into the next

The brand was founded in Detroit, in November 1911, by racer Louis Chevrolet and General Motors founder William C. “Billy” Durant, who developed cars that quickly earned reputations for performance, durability and value. Those traits remain at the core of Chevrolet, which is the world’s fourth-largest automotive brand.

From the very start, Chevrolet brought technology and features typically reserved for more expensive cars to its lineup of affordable cars and trucks. The first Chevrolet — the Series C Classic Six — offered an electric starter and electric headlamps at a time when both were rarities among even luxury cars. In the decades that followed, innovations such as safety glass, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control systems were used on Chevrolet models at the same time as more expensive vehicles.

As one of the largest-selling brands in the industry, Chevrolet’s early adoption of landmark technologies fundamentally changed the way they were applied to new vehicles. Chevrolet also made performance affordable. Its early four- and six-cylinder engines were known for durability and strong performance, but it was the 1955 introduction of Chevrolet’s small-block V-8 that opened a new era in attainable high-performance.

The engine would power millions of cars and trucks in next 50 years, with its legacy passed on to a new generation of small-block V-8s that is used in today’s trucks and SUVs, as well as performance cars including the Camaro SS and Corvette. The performance characteristics of the small-block V-8 helped establish Chevrolet as a force in almost all forms of motorsports.

Chevrolet-powered race cars were immediate contenders in the fledging stock car and drag racing worlds of the 1950s, growing to dominate them in the next decades. Chevrolet is the winningest brand in NASCAR and has collected more NHRA Pro Stock Manufacturers Cups than any other brand.

Lakeside California Track, First Purpose-Built Racing Facility in history!

It all started in 1904. At San Diego county in California, a 60-foot wide racetrack was especially adapted for automobile and horse racing was built.

Many famous race drivers participated there, including Barney Oldfield in his well known "Green Dragon." T. P. Bernereli "Barney" Oldfield began his racing career on a bicycle. Oldfield was born June 3, 1878, in Wauseon, Ohio. Oldfield became famous racing cars. Barney made the 999 famous. The steering wheel was a straight iron bar, similar to a tiller on a boat. The car made so much noise that they named it after a famous steam locomotive, the "999." Oldfield won his first race in Detroit by half a mile in 1902.

This was a successful race car which Barney purchased and used to barnstorm his way across the country, racing and giving exhibitions when he could.

In 1907, he came to the new racetrack at Lakeside, in San Diego county. Often another car and driver traveled with him to compete against him in exhibitions. These were usually a series of timed laps with each car taking a turn on the track alone, running against the clock.

On April 7, 1907, The San Diego Union announced the first event to open the new racetrack. Barney Oldfield in his 'Green Dragon' was to be featured in a match against Bruno Seibel in the 'Red Devil' on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, 1907. Special excursion trains would run to Lakesdie and return after the races. The newspaper said that the largest crowd in San Diego's racetrack's history was expected. Both Oldfield and Seibel pronounced the track as being excellent and without a peer anywhere in the world.

According to the April 22 issue of the Union, Oldfield had set a new record of 51 4/5 seconds for the mile. For about ten years, regular weekly auto and motorcycle races were held at the dirt circular track. Many old-timers recalled spending Sunday afternoons at the track, even testing their own driving and mechanical skills. The appearance of Barney Oldfield was an outstanding highlight in the history of the San Diego race track.

Finally, after many years of trying to talk our "Humble Host" to go public, 'The Weatherman' has allowed us to tell selected stories about the sporting life of one, infamous, Weatherman.

-Buddy, a life long friend and 'The Weatherman', gets invited to live and work in Sun Valley Idaho for a season. The winter ski season.

-When they arrive, the sports duo discover the harsh economic truth of the Wood River Valley. 'The slack', the time in-between Summers business and ski season. Until the snow falls, there are no jobs on the mountain, something Weatherman and Buddy were looking forward to.

-Uncle Jack gets the guys jobs at the 'Western Cafe'. The duos work was food prep and washing dishes. Buddy's was busing tables.

Little did Weatherman know of the history of the building, during their work at the famous cafe. Later they found out about the Hollywood history of the site, the 'Ketchum "Alpine Club & Cafe" "Hunting Casino"'.

Working days and nights at the Western, he made his way throughout the property. Weatherman relates, that on several occasions during evening shifts, he did see moving figures in his peripheral vision, men in cowboy hats.

Women in fashionable dresses. After years of writing his own notes on his experiences, Weatherman would discover the true history of the building. Gaming, parties and famous people.

-The Western Café opened in the 1950s in a building that is believed to have been constructed in the mid 1940s. The revered restaurant was popular with people from the "lower country"—the area comprising Twin Falls and Burley—for its casual atmosphere and affordable prices. One regular at the Western, said he was one of the first two or three customers the "mom-and-pop" diner attracted. He said the café ultimately became very popular with local residents. "The food was always very good". "You could get a quarter of a pie as one single serving and coffee was five cents a cup … It catered mostly to the working people of the valley".

The Western Café served its last customers on May 31, 2004, ending its run as one of the oldest establishments in downtown Ketchum, Idaho. The main street in Ketchum, leading to Sun Valley, first got its legs in 1947, with wooden sidewalks.

-After work, hanging out near the Hemingway house, one evening another visage got Weatherman's attention...at first he thought it was Uncle Jack.

Uncle Jack was famous in his own right. He was the resort company pharmacist. He had carte blanche in town at all the social establishments like Whiskey Jacques.

Uncle Jack also served as the official town (Sun Valley-Ketchum) Santa Claus.

-Hemingways spirit permeates the Wood River Valley. History was not on the sporting guys interest list at the time, however they were imprinted with many aspects of 'For Whom The Bell Tolls', later in life.

-During the ski season house parties picked up around the valley. At one house party, our heroes were graced by the Hemingway girls.

-Grumpy's was brand new and many schooners were consumed and shared.

-While making their way into the Sun Valley scene, the duo stumble on Hailey, just down the valley, to 'Mr. Bill's Gaming' storefront.

As a roving chair lift operator, Weatherman worked all the chairlifts on Baldy Mountain. Working the Flying Squirrel lift was challenging. The very fast, rapid turnaround and chair loading was the fastest lift, west of the Mississippi.

The famous actor approached the entrance with a female friend and was too slow to accomplish loading onto the chair, Weatherman recognized what he needed to do, he punched the stop button on the controls of the lift with his left hand and he held the chair with his right arm, before it struck Mr. Eastwood and his guest on the chair.

Disaster averted, the most likely outcome of a badly timed load at that chairlift, by someone of a later age, let's say. Subjects are likely thrown to the ground and broken bones are possible.

Mr. Eastwood turned to the Weatherman, as he was softly moving to sit on the chair and said, "that was close, thanks".

-Following other company employees down the mountain, after their day of work, Weatherman borrows a cafeteria tray to sled two thousand feet down the slopes of Baldy Mountain to the Warm Springs apres ski scene.

What a rush, with snowmobile boots and the Sun Valley Company jacket, Mike used the fastest conveyance to the bottom of Baldy Mountain, the company cafeteria tray. Made of sturdy fiberglass, one needed only the solid strength of a young man and rigid bones and muscle to ride the jarring terrain to the required social hangouts.

-Skiing more than a month, thirty plus days during the season (for free) the scene with fellow employees was a chance for a young man to grow up. And improve his skiing from absolute beginner to novice to at least, advanced intermediate.

-In a chance meeting while working on the mountain, Weatherman meets and eventually collaborates with skiing great, Warren Miller.

Weather Services provided to cape area resorts

At the time, resorts in western Mexico relied on the federal water commission out of Mexico City for tropical storm advisories.

They received infrequent reports via FAX machine, into the offices of the hotels, throughout the Pacific coast.

Way before 'the internet', the resort owners couldn't get anyone on the phone in Mexico City and the only other source of storm information was the new 'Weather Channel', available on satellite tv dishes making their way into Mexico.

Sadly, the weather channel was not focused on Mexico. The presenters on the channel often never showed the Pacific coast, they were always talking about the Atlantic coast, giving their tropical system reports.

Weatherman developed a service at the right time. Resort owners were now calling his offices in San Diego, seeking help.

When crazy big storm systems were lurking off the coast, the service was the only way many in Southern Baja knew what was happening, weather wise.

Truly, the service represented the best advice. "No news, is good news".

Recognized by the US National Weather Service, the service has now been delivering answers to users for over forty-five years.

Some time ago, "the Weatherman" removed his resume from public view. We beg to differ, there's alot more business for the company to accomplish, so we've reposted his work here.

Weatherman and his family have lived in San Diego for over fifty years.

Not to mention Weatherman's service to his country, his Grandfather served in the U.S. Army under Patton in WWII. His Father served in the U.S. Navy for over thirty years, his service on river boats in Vietnam and as an instructor at San Diego's Naval Ocean Systems Services Command developed skills that he passed on. His Father-In Law also served on river boats in Vietnam. His Godfather served as a senior engineer for the Hubble Telescope and advanced defense programs for a major defense related contractor.

Weatherman first caught the travel bug when his Grandfather told the family how he trained for his war service in the deserts of California and his service to his country in the far away lands of North Africa, Italy and the Battle of the Bulge.

In the heady days of the "Tecate Bull-Run", Mexican Bullfights, Jai'Lai and Mike's a-Go-Go on Revolution Boulevard in Tjuana, Weatherman graduated from Marian High School, located on the border near Downtown Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Weatherman participated in and sponsored the first Tijuana River Valley Area Rodeo.

Directly out of high school, Weatherman began his service to his country. Afterwards, 'WXMAN' graduated from the KCBQ Radio Workshop once located in Santee California. He also served as a weekend Disc Jockey at the Famous '60's Vibe' giant 50,000 watt station, KCBQ-AM.

He moved up the hill to Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. He received his Radio Degree at the same time he served in several positions at KGCR-AM, Grossmont College Radio, at the time an FCC licensed campus radio station, including serving as General Manager.

In 1978, his service in radio continued in special services on Mission Bay at 91X, at the start of their new format.

At the same time Weatherman stayed busy in community service and his continued interest in radio, media and telecommunications.

In Ketchum Idaho, during his non-working time, Weatherman was the Program Director and weekend overnight talent on KRMR, Rocky Mountain Radio, 99.9 FM. The station was also cablecast on Channel 7 Television in the ski-resort community of Sun Valley-Ketchum, Idaho. Working with the Folk Music legend personality, Kit Neraas.

In San Diego, Weatherman worked with the expanding Cox Cable company on several Public Relations efforts, including the local San Diego launches of MTV (Music Television) and CNN (Cable News Network).

Later, starting in 2006, Weatherman started working with the San Diego ESPN Network local stations and the launch of FOX SPORTS 1 Radio Network, launched in 2014. Weatherman and the company continues to supply local and network radio, exclusive content unavailable anywhere else.

Back when, in community service at the time, he served on the Marian High School Blue Ribbon Committee while he served on various City of Imperial Beach committees, including the Beachfront Development Committee and the Human Relations Committee.

Throughout the eighties, Weatherman served in various professional roles with business associations in San Diego county, including the Imperial Chamber of Commerce, as the Executive Manager. The Original Imperial Beach Sandcastle Committee, as the Promotion Director. The Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce, as the Executive Director and he established the "Resource Center", following the history of the Spring Valley Improvement Committee from 1912!

During Weathermans tenure in the Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce, the County of San Diego went to Sacramento, the capital of the State of California, the SD County Board of Supervisors had its paid lobbyist create law that ended any local area formations of cities in the state. At the time, Weatherman, on behalf of the largest populated community of San Diego county, Spring Valley, was petitioning LAFCO for the formation of city status for the community.

To this day, no city has formed in the State of California since!

At the time of Weathermans tenure at the Imperial Beach Chamber, Paul Clark of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce, Mary Kay Forsyth of the Coronado Chamber of Commerce, the late George Webster, the director of the National City Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Chamber of Commerce of San Diego named Weatherman as the Chairman of the South Bay Chambers of Commerce, a position he held for many years.

During this time BonitaFest Legend, Art Mays, introduced Weatherman to the originator of Mike's A-Go-Go and sponsored tourism adventures to MONSTER Mikes Sky Rancho and San Felipe in Baja Norte, Mexico.

Weatherman served the County of San Diego on the formation committee and as the By Laws Chairman for the development of the San Diego South Bay Economic Development Corporation. Mike teamed with the San Diego legend David Nuffer on several high-visibility public relations efforts for Southern California.

In 1985, Weatherman's racing efforts were sponsored by the amazing George Hurst.

Since 1985, he has been working with travel professionals on projects south of the border. He worked directly with Economist Milton Friedman, to establish an Office of Protocol under the International Trade Commission of San Diego.

The Safari Club was set up in 1986. He concluded many cross border functions, including but not limited to, tours & VIP transportation and directly assisting the Founder of the Mexican PAN Party, Sr. Clouthier, in his exploration of the San Diego area border regions.

From 1987, he is the Founder of the trade association, Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce and served as the Corporate Secretary and Executive Vice President at the same time. In 1988, while serving as the Chairman of the South Bay Chambers of Commerce Executives Committee, he helped organize the largest American Congressional delegation ever to visit San Diego.

To this day, Weatherman serves as Air-Space America's Special Representative, the event, in association of the Air/Space America Air and Trade show, included US. Vice President G. H. W. Bush. And the only time the French Concorde visited Southern California, at San Diego's Brown Field.

In 1991, Safari Club was chosen, along with several other Mexican companies to serve as an official "host agency" for the Republic of Mexico for the 1991 Total Eclipse of the Sun, in Baja California Sur.

From 1994, the Safari Club has designed and executed many public, hands-on, science related programs. In 1995, Weatherman worked in the formation of the new 'Patronato', to foster and protect the East Cape of Baja South.

Today, the East Cape National Park serves to protect the National Marine Nursery of Cabo Pulmo, B.C.S.

As an example, in 1997-98, Weatherman and Sr. Roberto Van Wormer Sr., forged a working association with the Scripps Institute Aquarium on the "Year of the Reef" project through public education and a Snorkle Tour of the Cabo Pulmo Reef system, in Baja California Sur.

Safari Club sponsored the UABCS Baja Mexico Plant Symposium and the Underwater Diving programs, to further the educational offerings in Baja California Sur. We have contributed to the local scientific community, because our tour management provisions require educated and articulate guides.

The Parr Family of Los Cabos, welcomed our team into theirs during this time, educating us to the magical ways of their Southern Baja. We were granted special arrangements at Bahia Chileno and Bahia San Lucas by Buds great sons, Mitch, Mark and Matt Jr. of Baja Pioneer and former OSS Officer, Sr. Bud Parr.

The History and Spirits of Hollywood adventure seekers, Bing Crosby, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Desi Arnaz and many more American entertainment icons now reside with our service to clients, at Safari Club!

In 1999, he was celebrated the State of Baja California "Amigo de Baja California Award", for his work with the Tourism Department of Baja Norte, Mexico.

Also from 1998, Weatherman and the Safari Club, collaborated with the Automobile Club of Southern California in promoting travel to Baja California, Mexico. From 1999, the Club formed the first Eco-Sensitive tour company in Cabo San Lucas, B.C.S., 'Southern Baja California'.

The Southern Baja Travel Bureau was formed with the Safari Club and the Panamerica Auto Clubs Federation, as a result.

We assisted the Los Cabos Hotel Association in two major events. The American Society of Travel Agents Convention in 1999 and the Western Travel Writers Association events in Los Cabos in 2000.

The CABO CLUB, a division of Safari Club, also organized the Baja 2000 "Official Race Party" with help from Jack Daniels himself and the Cabo Wabo Cantina. We celebrated with Dan Smith's Enduro Racing Team, after they won the race and enjoyed their stay at the Hacienda Beach Resort at Lands End.

Also in 2000, Weatherman won the right to participate in the Mexico Visitor Card program. Mexican Immigration, approved of the Safari Club, selling the Republic of Mexico official tourist cards to the American public.

Weatherman participated in many Television and Film shoots in Baja California and Baja Sur.
As an example, he was the Executive Location Producer behind the E! Entertainment program,

"Wild On Baja". Safari Club is the only company that E! Entertainment has ever allowed to own and use a 'broadcast copy' of a "Wild On" program, because of the success of the show.

From 2002, he focused Club efforts on safety issues. Being a member of the San Diego County Emergency Medical Services Committee, as the Mexico Representive. The American Consulate in Tijuana now has a full-time duty officer, serving the needs of Americans traveling in Baja, for emergency services, because of his work. Security Services now serve as our primary business for travelers in Mexico.

Weatherman served as a negotiating conduit between the State of Baja California and County of San Diego, developing improved Cross-Border Medical Emergency Protocols, during this time. Mike is now an active volunteer for American Medical Emergency Xpedition (AMEX).

From 2004, the Safari Club enhanced its promotions of the surfing and offroad communities. Beyond the crazy surf and off-road stereotypes, deserved or not, Safari Club sponsored more people and events than any other Baja Company. In 2004, the club hosted the infamous 'Viewing Party' at the Safari Club Ranch in north county San Diego, of the unreleased, off-road, now, classic, "Dust To Glory". Baja Safari also sponsored the "Dust To Glory" Hollywood Sunset Boulevard Red Carpet premiere party and the theatrical opening in San Diego.

The Safari Club are longtime supporters of the "Wind an Sea" Surf Club, Southern California 4x4 Club and many other Surf and offroad competitions. In 2005, the CABO 500 offroad race, founded by the Safari Club, invited American racers to southern Baja for the first time. Offroad racing has been an institution for over 50 years in Baja Sur, but never with North Americans.

Since 2005, Weatherman has sponsored broadband based telecommunications, 'Internet' and network broadcast based sports and travel promotions. The longest running shows in the genre, Baja Racing News RADIO LIVE! and OFF-ROAD LIVE!

In the Dos Mares CABO 500, also started in 2005, we teamed with a local Baja auto club, the state off-road association and the Mexican National Federation of off-road racing.

Our racers were sponsored by the Incredible Hotel California and our guests continue to be transformed by their experiences in Todos Santos with Author & Executive Chef Dany, Debbie and Alejandro Blanco and his family. We'll never forget walking through the 'for sale' building that the hotel now occupies, before it was transmuted by its then, new owner, John. Our original host John Stewart and his hospitality, will forever stay in our hearts!

In 2006, the first American racer won a southern Baja offroad race at the first CABO 500, which ran from La Paz to Cabo San Lucas. Danny Anderson of Las Vegas, in a Class 1 Jimco, smoked the rest of the field, with over an hour lead.

The Mexican national championship event and first international off-road race held in Baja, Mexico, won by an American. Danny was awarded the "King Of Cabo" Trophy, the annual trophy to the winner of each years CABO 500. The event was a National Mexican Championship event in 2006.

Weatherman served as one of the start line tire inspectors with "Radio Bob" Hynes for BFGoodrich Tires and Jackson Motorsports, the sanctioning bodies tire sponsor at the 2006 Baja 1000, after ten years of helping Radio Bob during numerous Baja off-road races. Bob was the founder of the Baja race radio relay services.

Also in 2006, Safari Club teamed with Cabo Fishing Partners and opened the first Baja offroad resort, Cabo Safari Resort, dedicated to the off-road lifestyle. The resort has hosted many racing and teams and off road clubs to become the "Home of Off-Road".

Cabo Safari Resort welcomed Off-Road vehicle and product dealers from around North America, Japan and Europe throughout this time frame, after offering and delivering the most aggressive sales producer incentive program, ever provided the industry.

In 2007, we sponsored seven off-road teams in various classes and events including the Baja Racing Champion Class 11 Baja Safari Team, during the 40th anniversary of the Baja 1000 event to Cabo San Lucas.

During the 50th Annual Baja 1000 racing year, Baja Safari Racing sponsored the race event winning VW class 5.

We also proudly promoted Operation Desert Fun 5, a desert adventure to benefit the Cal-Diego Paralyzed Veterans Association and Cal 4 Wheel. Baja Safari had a record setting travel year after our shift to southern Baja California, promotions with Volaris Airlines, Hotel California in Todos Santos and many off-road related manufacturers. No other Baja company supported the off road community like Weatherman.

We celebrated the 40th Baja 1000 in Los Cabos with friends and family to finish out the year!

In 2008, Cabo Safari Resort and our Los Cabos operations sustained the 2007 gains and secured the customer base originally started with our exclusive work with the Five Star, Five Diamond, Latin America Resorts of the Year, while we developed our regional ecotours. The Hotel Cabo San Lucas and Hacienda Beach Resort tour hospitality groups transferred their last customers to our operations.

That year, The Weatherman and his team enjoyed the sponsorship of the 100 Year Celebration of General Motors, among others, with unique tours and service offerings for their truck dealerships throughout North America.

In 2015, Weatherman celebrated 107 Years of Desert Off-Road Racing, with the originator of that racing sanction, the Maricopa Auto Club of Arizona. Our club is the International Promoter of "The Desert Classic" and the 1915-2015 Centennial celebration of the San Diego Exposition at "Balboa Park".

In 2017, the Company celebrated its best class win at the 50th Baja 1000 in La Paz.

Through the teams extensive professional experience, the Weatherman has been a pioneer in developing quality services for their Membership and the traveling community in general.

An example of real-time Baja travel information, only available from our Club, is our "Baja Weather Service" service. The only weather services recognized by the United States National Weather Service, based soley on Baja California, Mexico. During Hurricane season, sometimes we are the only organization that has 'a handle' on storm conditions in Baja.

The "SPEED Mex" division provided racing and specialized services for the 'extra special needy' desert off-road racing community. The San Felipe Baja 250, Baja 500, Baja 1000, CABO 500 and CABO 1000 are all covered for international travel choices. In 2006, the only 'on-the-dirt', 'prerunner insurance coverage' was first offered through, The "Baja Racers Edge".

Since 2009, our Safari Club continues to deliver specialized services to numerous publics, who require exceptional experiences in Mexico. We are also bringing these rare experiences ONLINE with BAJA LIVE!

We have delivered Baja experiences to hundreds of thousands of Baja fanatics and newbies. Stay tuned, we have some very exciting advancements scheduled this year! The Weatherman continues to stand up for Americans seeking unique travel experiences and find value in celebrating life!

"New solar eclipse map shows path of totality could shift, that could leave some US towns without views of the celestial event The Solar Eclipse's path of totality has shifted by about 2,000 feet. Viewers on the edge of the path are advised to move closer to the center The solar eclipse's path of totality could shift on Monday - and now experts are urging people to travel to different spots to see the celestial event. Amateur astronomer John Irwin released a new map of the 115-mile* path from Maine through Texas which has revealed its changed by roughly 2,000 feet. The updated calculation has suggested that people in places like Rome, New York, Effingham, Illinois, and some areas of Fort Worth, Texas will no longer be able to have a perfect view of the eclipse. Roughly 34 million people are expected to view the eclipse, but hundreds of thousands of viewers will now be left outside the immediate path and unable to watch the event. The solar eclipse will spread across 115 miles from Maine to Texas on Monday, but astronomers say the path of totality has shifted by 2,000 feet, +2. As people prepare to travel to watch the solar eclipse, Irwin's report has suggested that the path of totality, which has been projected for months, might be slightly off. Irwin is part of a team analyzing the solar eclipse event for the Besselian Elements, and according to the website, they reported that the adjustment accounts for 'topographic elevation both around the limb of the moon and on the surface of the Earth.' Topographic elevation is the adjustment of how close the Earth is to the sun, accounting for mountainous regions that would slightly alter where the path of totality will be. 'By accounting for the topography of both the moon and the Earth, precise eclipse prediction has brought new attention to a tiny but real uncertainty about the size of the sun,' a NASA spokesperson said. It added that uncertainty over the Earth's rotation could also affect the predictions for the path the eclipse will take. To be safe, NASA said that for those on the edges of the path, it might be worth traveling closer to the center to guarantee a good view. 'Traveling toward the center of the path of totality, even a mile or two, will quickly increase the length of totality that people can see,' the space agency spokesperson said. People in cities including Dallas, Indianapolis, Buffalo and Cleveland will still see the projected four minutes of the total solar eclipse."

The two groups produced a triple crown series together in 2018 in conjunction with Crandon. That year Jason Scherer took home the victory and nabbed $15,000 in prize money. This time around the promoters have expanded their offering to include the entire lineup of KOH and Desert classes. King of the Hammeroids will host all of the traditional Desert classes and The Martelli brothers will host all of the KOH classes at both the Mint and the CA 300."

2018 is also the year, several racers were killed at the Primm race by the Martelli Midgets and they both used the FAILED yellow brick tracking systems.

It's difficult to get killed at the Hammeroids event, when the 'racers' seldom get over 15 MPH!

"ENGINE IS OUT"

"The engine is out of the Hoonipigasus and our team is investigating the extent of the damage from the inside - not the thing you want to do the day before qualifying for the 100th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - especially because it means less time practicing on the hill. Some bad news from our Pikes Peak International Hill Climb efforts with the Hoonipigasus: two separate engine component failures in the last two days. I was only able to put in one run yesterday morning on the middle of the mountain during practice, and an engine issue started just a few turns in. The team is working hard to get the engine repaired, but we have just lost two important days of practice on the Pikes Peak racecourse. We are having to adjust our goals for this weekend’s race, as these big setbacks are taking their toll and we are going to struggle to even get a good qualifying run."

2021 KING OF THE MOUNTAIN ROBIN SHUTE TOP QUALIFIER IN UNLIMITED DIVISION

3-TIME KING OF THE MOUNTAIN DAVID DONNER SETS EXHIBITION DIVISION QUALIFYING RECORD

Colorado Springs, CO – Drivers in the 100^th Running of the iconic Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, took to the mountain for day two of early morning practice sessions and ran on all three sections of the course with the Unlimited and Exhibition divisions taking their qualifying runs on the lower section.

A new qualifying record was set in the Exhibition division by David Donner, (Colorado Springs, CO) in a 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S with a time of 4:02.939, besting Randy Pobst’s record of 4:10.342 in the Tesla Model S Plaid just last year. Donner was King of the Mountain three times, first in 1991, again in 2002 and a third time in 2005.

Defending King of the Mountain, Robin Shute (Lomita, CA) topped the Unlimited division with a time of 3:24.519 in his 2018 Wolf TSC-FS. Two other Wolf’s joined Shute in the division this year, Dan Novembre, qualifying third, and Pikes Peak rookie, Henry Hill.

June 22 Qualifying Results

The final day of qualifying takes place on Thursday, June 23 when the Open Wheel and Pikes Peak Open drivers line up to Race to the Clouds.

The 2022 Race Day Run Order is as follows:

The Exhibition Division competitors will run slowest to fastest based upon qualifying times.
The Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama Division will run slowest to fastest based upon qualifying times.
The remaining competitors will run fastest to slowest based upon qualifying times (regardless of division). These cars will not run in any specific division order.

Qualification times will be determined by the competitor’s best time on the Lower Section during Official Qualifying held Tuesday, June 21 – Thursday, June 24. The final Run Order will be based upon qualification times.*

*Race Week Kicks off on Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain

Two Divisions Complete Qualifying Runs

Colorado Springs, CO – It’s Race Week on Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain. Competitors in The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, qualified today.

All three sections of the course were open to drivers making their early morning practice runs.

Lower Section – Qualifying

The Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama division revved up for qualifying runs on the lower section of the course. Cam Ingram (Durham, NC) behind the wheel of his #9 2020 Porsche GT4 Clubsport was top qualifier in the division.

Time Attack 1 drivers also completed their qualifying attempts today with David Donohue (West Chester, PA) in the top spot.

Practice and Qualifying sessions continue for the sold-out 100^th Running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, this week.

Time Attack 1 competitor, Sead Causevic (Vancouver, BC, Canada), made two attempts, but flipped the car just past the Start Line on his third. Causevic was not injured.

Middle Section – Practice

Rhys Millen, Tommy Boileau and James Clay ran well through the middle section, setting top times in the Pikes Peak Open division. Millen’s time was 2:26.411 behind the wheel of the 2016 E-Motion Porsche GT3R TT.

The Open Wheel division was led by 2021 Rookie of the Year, Codie Vahsholtz, in the 2013 Ford Open with a section time of 2:33.656. Paul Dallenbach in a new entry, a 2020 Sierra Alpha also had good runs.

Upper Section – Practice – Unlimited and Exhibition Divisions

For Exhibition, David Donner turned the fastest time of 2:38.612 in his ‘22 Porsche Turbo S. Blake Fuller crashed at Cog Cut when his Tesla overshot the braking zone, ending up in the boulders, but was able to walk away uninjured.

The first day of practice was rough on the Unlimited class. Dan Novembre, Rod Millen and Robin Shute all experienced mechanical issues preventing them from making full runs.

Derek Boyd in his ‘08 Mitsubishi Evo X with a 2:48.581 notched the fastest time.

Located 75 miles south of San Diego US and 100 miles south-east of Ensenada, Baja California at what is the most exciting new events on the planet.

It’s called TOYO TIRES MONSTER Mike’s Peak. A 20-mile desert-based, flat-out off-road hill climb to ‘Mike’s Sky Ranch’ – the ultimate altar to off-road adventure, high up in the San Pedro Mártir foothills.

The name of the event we're working on, is a very intentional play on that other very famous hill climb called Pikes Peak. That’s because, ultimately, it’s the heart of the sport. Pikes Peak, for the uninitiated, is an annual hill climb up a public road in Colorado USA that scales the side of a mountain.

Starting way back in 1916, the course is a snaking 12.42-mile, 4,720-foot ascent through 156 corners and into the clouds to the checkered flag at a very high 14,000 feet!

Dirt racing. Running on loose gravel offers a different dimension to the traditional, stuffy and stiff-upper-lipped hill climb scene. It’s more visual, more engaging and a lot trickier to drive.

From the past. Pikes Peak was somewhat neutered in 2012, when glossy, smooth black tarmac was slopped over the dirt road. This changed everything. It brought a heavier reliance on aerodynamic, rather than mechanical grip. Runs became more predictable, safer and opened the door for circuit racers to come and have a crack in their track-spec cars.

People like nine-time WRC champ, Sébastien Loeb. Who in 2013 rocked up in a purpose-built 875bhp, 875kg, super-specialist, hill-climb weapon made out of recycled Le Mans parts. Seb didn’t just break the Pikes Peak record, but unequivocally obliterated it. 8:13.878 was his time. Equating to an average of 90.53mph and sending the previous 90-odd years of records into insignificance.

Olympic 4th-Placer Markss Claims Nissan Super Girl Surf Title near Oceanside Pier

After landing in the dreaded fourth place in Olympic surfing last month, Caroline Marks, of California, carved out the top spot the 15th annual Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro Sunday in Oceanside, California.

Behind with 11 minutes left in the final, Markss performed a maneuver and edged Oceanside’s Caitlin Simmers 14.83 points to 14.27 at the world-class competition adjacent to the Oceanside Pier. Another Olympian, Tatiana Weston-Webb, was eliminated in the fourth round when Encinitas surfer Alyssa Spencer earned 15 points. Spencer won her heat in the quarterfinals with 11 points, but was beaten by Marks in the semifinals.

Movie choices will vary by location.Tickets to the screenings are free, but must be reserved in advance to ensure parking lots aren't overcrowded. ROME (AP) — Ennio Morricone, the Oscar-winning Italian composer who created the coyote-howl theme for the iconic Spaghetti Western “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and often haunting soundtracks for such classic Hollywood gangster movies as “The Untouchables” and the epic “Once Upon A Time In America,” died Monday. He was 91.

Morricone’s longtime lawyer, Giorgio Assumma, said “the Maestro,” as he was known, died in a Rome hospital of complications following surgery after a recent fall in which he broke a leg bone.Outside the hospital, Assumma read a farewell message from Morricone.

“I am Ennio Morricone, and I am dead”, began the message. In the greeting, the composer went on to explain that the only reason he was saying goodbye this way and had requested a private funeral was:
“I don’t want to bother anyone”.
