HANOI (Reuters) – Many sick passengers who flew to Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam took fever reducers to cheat temperature scanners at the airport, leading to the discovery of several infected cases later, state media reported at the weekend.

Nguyen Van Chau, head of Ho Chi Minh City’s Health Department, was quoted in state-run Tien Phong (Vanguard) daily as saying “a series of passengers” took fever reducers three hours before arrival.

“That’s why when they passed through the airport, the body temperature scanners skipped them,” Chau said.

Vietnam has confirmed 26 people infected with H1N1 flu, 23 of whom came by air after traveling in the United States or Australia. Three others fell sick after coming in contact with the infected travelers.

The country requires inbound passengers found with fever to be isolated for seven days.

Clinical investigations of the infected cases revealed they had taken fever reducers, Chau said.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared an influenza pandemic on Thursday and advised governments to prepare for a long-term battle against the virus.

The H1N1 strain has spread widely, with 28,774 infections confirmed in 74 countries to date, including 144 deaths, according to the WHO’s latest tally. Vietnam has so far had no deaths from the flu.

The man, 35, an insurance company worker surnamed Wu passed out at home after drinking too much Saturday at a high-end restaurant in Taipei among more than 100 wedding guests, the Liberty Times reported.

It was not known if he had health complications.

“Everyone was having a great time,” said restaurant party organizer Linda Chien. “We don’t know what happened after that.”

Wu was hospitalized after his face turned black, the paper said. A hospital spokeswoman said he died despite treatment.

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Internet-Age innovator Google is taking advantage of an old-time principle to thwart wildfires: goats will eat almost anything.

Google has brought in about 200 of the grazers to munch fields around its campus in the Northern California city of Mountain View.

California is prone to wild fires and several years of drought have heightened the danger. Grasses and brush that thrives during the state’s brief rainy season turn ominously sere and flammable during parched months.

Firefighters consistently advise people to clear brush to create buffer zones bereft of fuel for spreading flames.

“We have some fields that we need to mow occasionally to clear weeds and brush to reduce fire hazard,” Google director of real estate and workplace services Dan Hoffman wrote in a posting on the company’s official blog.

“Instead of using noisy mowers that run on gasoline and pollute the air, we’ve rented some goats … to do the job for us (we’re not “kidding”).”

It is common for goats to be used in Northern California to clear brush, especially on terrain difficult for people or equipment to access.

“We currently have 800 environmentally friendly, self-propelled weed eaters for weed control and brush control, that are ready for your project,” California Grazing says on its website.

“Goat weed control and land management with goats is not only easy on the eyes and the environment but is also cost effective.”

California Grazing provided the herd munching away outside the “Googleplex.” Hoffman said that a border collie dog named “Jen” is helping manage the goats.

“They spend roughly a week with us at Google, eating the grass and fertilizing at the same time,” Hoffman wrote. “It costs us about the same as mowing, and goats are a lot cuter to watch than lawn mowers.”

“We didn’t pay 37 million zlotys ($11 million) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there,” Michal Grzes, a conservative councilor in the city of Poznan in western Poland, was quoted as saying.

“We were supposed to have a herd, but as Ninio prefers male friends over females how will he produce offspring?” said Grzes, who is from the right-wing opposition Law and Justice party.

The head of the Poznan zoo said 10-year-old Ninio may be too young to decide whether he prefers males or females as elephants only reach sexual maturity at 14.

Lawal Adekunle Nurudeen met his victim on the Internet in 2007 and convinced her that he was a British widower called Benson Lawson. He said he was an engineer working in Lagos whose wife and only child had been killed in a car accident.

“The victim, a 56-year-old woman from Australia, told the convict that she wanted a husband and all the men she had met always disappointed her,” said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s anti-corruption police.

“The convict, who is married with three children, instantly replied and told the victim she had met her Mr Right … He sent the picture of a white man to foreclose any suspicions.”

The woman sent Nurudeen money for medical treatment and travel costs to visit Australia. He spent the funds on two plots of land and a Honda Prelude car.

Nigerian confidence tricksters have a long history of extorting money via the Internet through “419″ scams, named after the clause that outlaws them in Nigeria’s penal code. Many are never caught.

The EFCC said Nurudeen was ordered to pay around $10,000 immediately and a further $250 a month to his victim until the full amount stolen was returned. She would also receive the proceeds of the sale of his land and car.

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Don’t ask Mattie Caldwell how many candles go on her birthday cake. “I don’t remember,” she said. Medicare records indicate Caldwell’s birth date is March 5, 1901. An old family Bible gives the same date but three years earlier, in 1898. And there’s no legal record of her birth because she was born at home.

In any case, Caldwell is celebrating this week with friends and family at her home in Genesee County’s Flint Township, about 55 miles northwest of Detroit.

“It’s special,” she said.

The great-great-great-grandmother to at least seven — she stopped counting a while ago — grew up on a farm in rural Mississippi and relatives say she never learned to read or write. She was the oldest of seven children, and the only one still alive.

“They didn’t send us to school too much,” Caldwell told The Flint Journal. “Father had us working in the fields.”

She later moved to Gary, Ind., with her husband and had one daughter, both of whom are deceased.

Caldwell uses oxygen, and a hip injury in 2005 left the avid dancer using a wheelchair. She says she has one more dance left in her, but won’t break it out yet.

“I don’t know when the Lord will be ready for me, but when he gets ready, I’ve got to move,” she said. “I’m going to dance for him, too.”
