My Thoughts:

I must not have been paying attention to the previews very well because I totally thought this was a total chick flick. And yes the main plot was around the love triangle but there was some definite action. When I started this movie I almost thought I'd put in the wrong thing! It's obviously not a hard core action movie just for the guys but I think its a good blend that creates a bit of a compromise between action and romantic comedy! I think the three main characters are terrific but honestly, Chelsey Handler is my favorite. I LOVED her character. Especially when she's pretty much shouting "YES! Sex tie breaker..." in the middle of a kids play-land! I can't say I've ever found myself in a true love triangle but the movie does well to make it fairly believable. Ok, well as believable as being in a love triangle with two CIA agents who bug your house to get a leg up on their competition, who happens to be their best friend can be. Overall, I thought it was a fun watch and would recommend it!

Our Priceless Experience Thanks to MasterCard's #CubsPledge

Last week I had the extreme pleasure of taking my oldest son, Timmy, for a day at Wrigley Field that we'll never forget. He has been in love with baseball since before he was two. He's been playing officially for six seasons now. He dreams of taking the field someday as a Cubs MLB player. But I'm not sure I could be anymore proud, even if that does happen, than I was spending the day with him last week.

I've been trying to put the experience into words but really, I simply can not find the words to express what truly amazing it was. And if the preplanned events of the day that included fielding and batting practice with the Cubs coaches wasn't enough, luck seemed to be following Timmy that day. He found $10 on the street outside of the field, with some help from Tricia's son who kindly gave the money he grabbed to Timmy too. The as we waited at the gate to get into the stadium that evening, Timmy was stopped and asked if he'd want to go on the field AGAIN to watch batting practice. This gave him the opportunity to collect Reed Johnson from the Cubs and several Phillies players autographs.

We had amazing seats and stayed for the entire game which came down to the very last out...for a moment we thought Reed Johnson might get the winning hit, how cool would that have been. In the end their last inning rally fell one run short of tying it up. But man was it an exciting last inning. I mean, maybe not as exciting as when I caught my first pop fly ON the field earlier that day, but pretty darn close.

This was truly a priceless experience and we can not thank MasterCard enough for the opportunity. Check out a few of our photos from this amazing day!

A lot of things have changed since I was little. I mean, A LOT! Many of those things are fabulous advances, hello, GPS? But sometimes all our technology gets in they way, in the way of taking the time to really see the world around you, smelling the roses etc, and for many people it is taking away the quality time spent with family. But with Hasbro's The Game of Life: zAPPed Edition, you can have the best of both worlds. With this new version of an old favorite new technology meets good ole fashioned family game time. I remember spending many Friday nights playing Life with my mom when I was little. It was fun and was way quicker than the other money collecting board game. Now a new generation can fall in love with The Game of Life while using the technology they love too. If you have an iPad, you'll simply need to purchase THE GAME OF LIFE: zAPPed Edition and then download the free app. (You can download the free app without the game...but it won't do you any good.) Once you have your game and the app, you're ready to start. You'll still pick a car (a real car token just like the old ones) and a blue or pink peg. But you'll also get to customize your virtual peg too. Once everyone has created their pegs, you'll spin to see who goes first. And just like always you'll be posed with the question....get a job right away or go to college. In the zAPPed Edition you'll be given three choices of careers. And you'll also get two other opportunities to make choices about your life path. Along the way you'll get to watch videos from American Funniest Video's celebrating those special life moments such as your graduation, wedding etc. My kids LOVE AFV so this is fun part for them as well. Along the way you'll see many good fortunes and misadventures similar to those you'll remember from the old game. But you'll be using a virtual spinner, watching video clips and the APP doesn't let you have more kids than you car can hold. (I can't be the only one who ever had to use a second car to hold all my kids back in the old days, can I?)

This game is listed for 8 year olds and up but my 4 year old plays along just fine as long as there is a qualified banker to help him with the money. At the end of the game everyone adds the quantity of each denomination bill (and loan) they have acquired and the APP credits your special token values and money for each baby and shows you the final results. This is a quick and easy play that I think is perfect for the whole family. We regularly play it together and have a ton of fun.

Note: I do let me kids play with my iPad under very strict supervision but the pads on the board seem to do well to hold the iPad in place and we've had NO issues with the safety of this expensive piece of technology!

We Celebrated Cinco de Mayo with #HormelFamily

Yes, yes I know it's practically June already but I totally forgot to share with you what we did a few weeks back to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

It was a BUSY weekend, so it was nothing elaborate. But I whipped up some cheese quesadillas, something I do often because the kids enjoy them. But when to have a little fun as I cut them up I tossed them into this festive chip bowl and filled the middle with Herdez Salsa Casera. I am a fan of quesadillas myself but this salsa just kicked it up a notch. And clearly my attempt to be festive was noted because my nine year old was intrigued enough to ask what the occasion was when I brought it out! I'm really enjoying pushing myself to do more simple things like this at home to make the otherwise everyday moments a little more special!

My Current Progress

Ok, so I've been sitting on this post for a week, as proud as I am of myself for the work I've been doing and that I truly FEEL so much better already I am still not at all proud of my current picture. But it is reality! I have a long way to go, 95 pounds to go to be exact.

This week I was up 1.6lbs. Which, seems to be a trend, up one or so and then down 4-5, so it's not too upsetting. But I did go a bit off this weekend. I hung out with friends and had a couple drinks that I didn't track. I'm guessing I went a little over even with my weekly points but I just wanted to enjoy the night and didn't even bring out my phone to check. But I'm needing to worry more about finding the time to exercise. Last week I didn't get a true workout in at all. We did a lot of walking on Thursday and I do move quite a bit at TBall practices on Monday and Wednesday but nothing to really get my heart rate up. So that's my goal for this week. I will make the time to workout!

Blue Man Group New York
I saw Blue Man group in Chicago last fall and it is such a good time. Take a group of friends and I promise you will have a BLAST at this show!

They play drums filled with paint. They hurl squishy objects through the air. They turn toilet paper into streamers. They’re the three silent, mysterious men dressed head to toe in blue who collectively make up the endlessly innovative theatrical experience that is Blue Man Group. Performed at an intimate Off-Broadway theatre in the East Village, this ever-popular show has become a true New York City institution. And it’s just been updated by its creators to include material that reflects the changes in the world (especially in technology) that have happened since this trio arrived on the scene years ago.

Stop by to see the marvels that are happening on stage with enormous ipads and the apps that come to life in hilarious ways. The classic material that audiences love is still there, but now there’s even more fun to be had at this dynamic show that combines multimedia, comedy and music into a total party atmosphere. A couple of tips: You just might get pulled into the action. And if you sit very close, you might get splattered upon. As you may recall our family went to see a preview of Mirror Mirror downtown Chicago. My whole family enjoyed the movie and before we even left the theater I got requests to get it on DVD when it came out. My boys will be thrilled to hear that it won't be much longer....

Bristol Renaissance Faire Pulls Out All the Stoppes for 25th Anniversary

Last summer we had the pleasure of visiting the Bristol Renaissance Faire for the first time. Check out my blog post here, to read all about it. But we are looking forward to getting back this year because there simply wasn't enough time in a day to take it all in.

Bigger, bolder and more boisterous than ever, this summer’s 25^th annual Bristol Renaissance Faire promises patrons an unparalleled celebration, filled with all the first-rate revelry Faire-goers have come to expect over the past two-and-a-half decades and a queen’s ransom of special surprises. More than 200,000 visitors are expected to attend Bristol’s special anniversary celebration, which begins July 7 and runs for nine weekends through Labor Day, Sept. 3.

“We’re going to party like it’s 1599,” said Linda McFeters, producer of the Bristol Renaissance Faire, promising streets brimming with a commedia del arte kaleidoscope of frolicking fools and masquerading merrymakers who will sweep patrons into a world far removed from the stresses of the 21^st Century.

Complementing a perennially popular array of jousting knights, swashbuckling swordsmen, mud beggars, rope-walkers, period dancers and musicians, the season will be one of the most extensive line-ups of special entertainment the Faire has ever assembled, including limited-engagement appearances by many of the most sought-after performing groups on the national Renaissance fair circuit. Travelling to Bristol for the first time this summer will be the explosively-entertaining steampunk bagpipe group, Klaxton, and juggling juggernaut London Broil. Also announced, the all-female Seelie Players will lure audiences with their debut of “Sirena: From Down Below We Sing,” an original musical tribute to the Sirens of Greek legend, featuring tribal drums and staffs, lithe dancing and all-new music.

Among favorite guest headliners returning to Bristol on select weekends to help celebrate the Faire’s 25^th anniversary are Doktor Kaboom, with his side-splittingly funny scientific diversions, Celtic rock phenomenon Tartanic, and the Clan Tynker family circus, an enchanting cacophony of music, juggling, magic, sword-swallowing, fire-eating and dangerous stunts. Also returning this summer is a performer who literally turned heads during her 2011 debut, aerialist Lauren Murray, who suspends herself from the treetops above the Faire in a graceful and gravity-defying silk act.

For 25 years, the Bristol Renaissance Faire has been captivating visitors with an incomparable spectrum of experiences, from unabashed revelry to first rate people-watching. For those who want to check their inhibitions at the gate, there’s ample opportunity to whoop and holler at jousting knights, get down and dirty with raucous, earth-clad mud beggars, or hurl a ripe tomato at a blustering braggart. Those inclined toward more serene pursuits will find a comparable bounty of enjoyments, from watching glass-blowers create one-of-a-kind works of art, to joining in a round of 16^th Century court dancing, or listening to the dulcet tones of world-class minstrels.

Among the most popular attractions at the Faire for the past four seasons, Bristol’s live action fantasy-play game, RenQuest, will return this summer with an entirely new storyline. RenQuest brings the worldwide phenomenon of multiplayer online role-playing games, like World of Warcraft, into the live action dimension of the Renaissance faire, creating an interactive theatrical experience that offers gamers an unprecedented opportunity to test their mental and physical skills beyond the realm of their computer screens.

For the Faire’s youngest patrons (a.k.a. “nipperkins”), Kids Quests provide two daily opportunities to embark on their own, age-appropriate adventures. Kids Quests set out from the vicinity of Bristol’s Kids Kingdom, an enclosed play area filled with oversized sand boxes, a huge climb-aboard pirate ship, and an entertaining cast of Renaissance fairytale characters presiding over interactive games, crafts and other child-friendly activities.

Festivities at the Faire take their framework from the summer day in 1574 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth visited the English hamlet of Bristol. Queen Elizabeth and other historically based characters are juxtaposed with fictional scenarios, such as the popular street-fighting escapades of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Faire streets are lined with game and ride areas, food vendors offering a palate-pleasing array of epicurean delights, and merchants selling everything from sterling silver jewelry to rare-edition books and hand-caned brooms. Strolling minstrels, jesters and other era characters mingle with faire-goers, many of whom come dressed in their own period costumes.

Located on 30 wooded acres, just west of I-94’s Russell Road exit, near Kenosha, Wis., the Bristol Renaissance Faire will be open rain or shine, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., every Saturday and Sunday, July 7 through Sep. 2, and on Labor Day Monday, Sep. 3. Did you love Life cereal when you were a kid? Even if you never touched the cereal you probably remember the commercials where ‘Mikey’, the kid that hates everything, actually likes eating Life cereal (you remember, “Hey Mikey! He likes it!”). The idea is that although Life cereal is healthy, it taste great—so kids don’t realize they are eating something that is actually good for them.

Isn’t that how it always is with kids? As soon as you tell them something is good for them, they shut the idea down. This is also true when it comes to physical fitness. Set Fun Athletic Challenges, Reward Efforts

Kids love learning new skills and are always excited to succeed. “At our camps, through fun skill challenges, fun competitions and fun games, kids exert themselves—often beyond their normal comfort level,” says Finks. Finks suggests introducing your child to a new skill—making great catches, running faster, setting an obstacle record, etc., which will often get your child to push him or herself on their own. “The fitness discovery is indirect,” adds Finks. “They experience an increased work capacity or ability. They see that they can move faster and longer than they ever imagined and for a longer period of time. That experience raises their understanding of what their bodies can achieve.”

They Are Primed for Learning

Once kids begin exercising regularly, they will notice how different their body feels. “They are relaxed, they sleep well, they are happy,” adds Finks. “Their body may be tired, but it’s a ‘good tired’ and parents should openly talk about this.” This is also a great time to begin talking about how the foods you put in your body affect how your body performs. Off the field moments during camps include nutritional education games, interactive classroom activities such as “Eat Like a Bear” or “Eat Like a Packer” and lunch hours for kids and coaches. There is even an interactive online game called “Eat Like a Pro”—which is a great tool for starting the parent/kid nutrition discussion “Kids are now primed to consider what kinds of foods will help them perform better tomorrow than they did today,” says Finks. “You want them to begin thinking about what foods provide them energy, repair muscles and help them feel great.” This is also a great time to begin talking about how the foods you put in your body affect how your body performs. If they want bring the same energy and success to the field tomorrow, they need to make smart food choices today!

Provide Proper Motivation

Just as all kids are different, all kids are motivated by different things. Parents need to tap into the one or two things that will motivate their child to try his or her hardest and do their best. “At camps, kids want to run hard for different reasons. From making a great catch to winning a leadership award,” says Finks. “Either way, that child is going to give it everything he has to achieve his own personal goal.”

Ok, now that I shared the good stuff about my Mother's Day, do you mind if I whine a bit? I really try not to be too whiny hear, now my personal Facebook page, that's a whole other story. But here, I know that I'm more than blessed to have a happy healthy family so anything beyond that is truly just a bonus. But sometimes, sometimes I just feel the need to whine...just a little!
So here goes...
I knew better than to expect much of anything but I didn't get so much as a "Happy Mother's Day" or a card from my husband. I KNEW I wouldn't be getting anything as beautiful as the flowers from Interflora.co.uk shown above. You see, years ago, I told him I'm not that into flowers. Too many people spend 100s of dollars on roses that last a few days, and I'd rather have something that lasts. And for some reason, as much as I could swear he never listens to a word I say, THAT, that he remembers years later.

I'm not sure I'll ever understand how the male brain works. Tell them a thousand times the timeline for the week and they act as if each new event is a total surprise to them. Mention that they don't need to spend tons of money on flowers for every occasion and it sticks like crazy glue.

Ah, such is life. I'm thinking for my birthday I might just send MYSELF some flowers!! Have you ever done that? I've grabbed some pretty flowers at the grocery store just to brighten up the day. But have you actually ever ordered flowers to be delivered to yourself? Would that be weird? If you've done it, do you include a note? Do you have them delivered to work? Did people ask who they were from? Maybe I should send them to myself at the house anonymously. Maybe THAT would get some attention! Hmmm...I just wonder...maybe that'd make sure I got a little something next Mother's Day!! Maybe it'd even get me something sparkly...?

My Thoughts:
We just finished the first book and started on the second this week. Even though my older boys have reading levels probably higher than my own, I still read out loud every night. I read few chapters each night and everyone in the family enjoyed it. If you're like the main characters mom and don't even like the word 'Fart,' maybe it won't be for you. There is a good amount of potty related humor but if you're ok with that, I think this book is really for all ages. My 4 year old listened and giggled along with the older two (8 & 9 years old). And as a mom the book held many fabulous lessons from dealing with pressure at school to the amazing ability kids have to make a difference in our world. It also covers basic scientific method in such a way that you don't even realize you're getting a bit of a science lesson as you go. But over all its a fun, inspiring read. It doesn't have illustrations but with a decent sized font and manageable chapters I think its a reasonable read for a strong second or third grade reader without any problems. Or, do what we did and read it together!!

This year is our third year with Six Flags season passes and we're hoping to get good use out of them again. We ventured out Sunday after a slow start and got to the park around 11:30 but we stayed until close (7pm on Sundays).

Applebee's, Where Parents AND Kids LiveWell

I have been a fan of Applebee's for a long time, partly because they have good food and partly because they are the only nonfast food place in our town. (Other places take 25 or so minutes to get to.) I have long been in love with Applebee's pastas and other calorie filled but delicious dishes. But since starting Weight Watchers I have learned that I also love their healthier dishes as well. This past weekend we visited and I tried their new Weight Watchers meal (12points) Creamy Parmesan Chicken. Although I must admit I didn't eat the spinach and pulled out the large chunks of mushroom (like the taste, hate the texture), this was a delicious and filling meal!

But what makes me even happier is that they are also working on healthier options for kids. They have added a Grilled Chicken Sandwich to their kids menu and paired with their steamed broccoli (which they've had for awhile) your kids can eat healthier too. As you can see my son went with fries, but he actually typically chooses the broccoli or applesauce. He didn't finish his sandwich so I tried a little of it and it was very good. The chicken was juicy and tender.

World’s Largest Casual Dining Chain Provides Healthful Menu Options for the Whole Family

Applebee's is expanding its more healthful menu choices to its kids menu so the whole family can dine out and enjoy better-for-you options. The world’s largest casual dining chain today announced it joined Kids LiveWell, a program that helps parents and kids make more healthful menu selections when eating out.

Applebee’s Kids LiveWell-endorsed entrée is a grilled chicken sandwich with steamed broccoli and 1 percent milk or apple juice. Kids also can enjoy orange juice and a side of applesauce. In addition, Applebee’s offers kids a nutritious mac-and-cheese option.

Kids LiveWell items must meet qualifying nutritional standards from leading health organizations, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The program was started by the National Restaurant Association and Healthy Dining.

“Applebee’s serves nearly 1 million guests a day – including many families with children – at our nearly 1,900 neighborhood locations across the country,” said Jessica James, Applebee’s executive chef. “Our new grilled chicken sandwich for kids lets the entire family eat out while keeping their calories and portions in check. We’re leading the casual dining industry with lower calorie menu options and removing the guilt from dining out.”

Since 2004, Applebee’s has been the only restaurant chain to offer Weight Watchers-endorsed entrées. In addition, Applebee’s has offered its Under 550 Calories menu for the past three years.
