Local designer bikinis to die for!

I recently came accross Skinny Beach on Facebook, and felt like a kid in a candy store. All their bikinis are really fashionable, colourful and totes affordable. The two styles currently available are the ever-popular twist bandeau style and the fringe style.

Mine arrived yesterday (I invested in a white fringe-style one) and I can happily vouch for the quality and the service!

Here are some of my fave styles and colours:

A set, as in the top and bottom together, will only set you back by R299 (Christmas present alert!), plus delivery costs if you live outside of durban.

At the moment the best way to get in touch with the Skinny Beach team is via Facebook, but I'm sure they have a website in the works.

Wakaberry opening in Cape Town

At last the Frozen Yoghurt heaven is opening in Cape Town!

Wakaberry needs no introduction, unless you've been living under a wifi-less rock, you will have heard about the self-serve forozen yoghurt bar with all the delish toppings. I have personally filled up an entire loyalty card from a Durban branch - and I don't even live there! I even braved Stellenbosch recently to get my fix. It really is that good. And it's coming to Cape Town.

Two branches are opening; one on Kloof Street in Gardens, and another on Dean Street in Newlands. The Kloof Street branch is open to the public on Saturday morning, 9am and Dean street is opening a bit later on the 23rd. I've seen inside the Kloof Street Wakaberry and so far it's looking good, with an outside deck and everything.

The great thing about their "fro-yo" is that it's 98% fat free, totally natural yoghurt, plus it's sourced locally. It's way healthier than ice-cream (I did a nutritional comparison here) and - in my opinion - tastes way better.

My fave weekend past-time is to hit the beach and do a Wakaberry run on the way home - so you know where to find me on Saturday afternoon... Also, if you were getting bored of all the instagram sushi pics - brace yourself - Wakaberry is incredibly photo-friendly.

Yummy Soy-sauce and honey chicken noodle recipe!

I found this in the September issue of Fairlady, and thought I would share it cos it sounds SO good.

Soy Sauce and Honey Chicken Stir-Fry with Egg Noodles [Serves 4]

Ingredients
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 5cm piece of ginger, grated
- 2 tbspn honey

- 1/4 cup of soy sauce
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 chilli (optional)
- Juice of 1/2 a lemon
- 600g chicken fillet strips
- 2 tbspn peanut oil
- 1 red and 1 yellow sweet bell pepper, cut into strips
- 1/2 cup chicken stock
- 200g egg noodles (cooked according to instructions)
- 4 spring onions, chopped

Instructions
1. Combine garlic, ginger, honey, soy sauce, oil, chilli and lemon in a bowl, then toss in the chicken and leave to marinate for 20 minutes.

2. Heat a wok, adding peanut oil before adding half of the chicken, stir-frying for 2-3 minutes. Remove the chicken, and add the other half repeating the process, then removing that chicken too. Stir-fry the peppers for 2 minutes before returning all the chicken to the wok with the chicken stock till cooked through.

3. Add noodles to the wok and any remaining sauce and let cook for another minute. Stir in spring onions.

To Serve
Divide among 4 bowls and garnish with coriander, chilli and sesame seeds.

Edgy Art Exhibition at San Remo

The old crack den on Camp Street, San Remo, has come under new ownership with the intention of turning it back into a guesthouse. In the interim phase, the house is playing hosting to an art exhibition. There are about 15 different artists, from photographers to painters and a whole lot in between all showcasing their work in different rooms of San Remo.

The opening night was well attended despite the threatening weather, the art was complimented by live music and drinks on sale. The range of artists was incredible, each with a different perspective and niche - all of whom were at the opening and happy to chat about their work. The pieces on display range from an enormous ball of drawing pins, to mixed media chandeliers and installations to a photograph that captures a mugging.

What was particularly interesting was the venue; once a guesthouse that turned sour, San Remo became home to squatters, drug dealers and other less-than-savoury characters. The building has since been sold, and renovation plans can be viewed at the exhibition. Although no major changes have been done and the building still seems to be in its “crack den” sate; the old world charm can be seen in the partially carpeted staircase and remaining wallpaper.

The exhibition is definitely worth a visit, and quite unlike anything you will have experienced before. Doors opened last night (19th) and will run till Sunday 21st, from 10:00 till 16:00. San Remo is located on the corner of Camp Street and Krynauw Street in Gardens.

6 Things I Hate Right Now

1. Weird length shorts

You know that awkward spot for shorts to end, where it just looks unnatural.

2. People who lack decent table manners

Come on, use a knife and fork, not everything needs to be treated like pizza. Ask to be passed the serviettes, don't get your hair in my food while stretching.

3. Intolerance

Last week was Pink Week on campus (to support different sexual orientations). They had a pink closet that people could write supportive messages on, but there were far too many negative messages.

4. Half-price Cocktail Scams

It's happy hour, I should be paying half-price for the cocktail I usually pay full price for NOT getting my usual cocktail in a glass half the size, at half the price. Ahem, certain bar on lower Long Street.

5. How good bad food tastes

Donuts, macarons, cake, croissants, chocolate-chip muffins, jelly babies. So good, yet so bad?

6. Burberry Spring/Summer 2013

I tweeted about this already, but I can't get over it... I just cant. Tin foil keeps coming to mind.

Quick Tutorial: Dip-dyed Tee

Most of my readers will know that I'm a bit obsessed with DIY and the whole ombre trend. Lately I've been liking the look of ombre crop tops and ombre tees, like some of the ones below...

I've already done a tutorial on Ombre Nails and I thought it would be cool to follow it up with a tutorial on dip-dyed tees. They're super easy to do, only take about half an hour, and all you need is 3 simple ingredients!

1. A white shirt (I got mine from Mr. Price)
2. Salt. About 4-5 tablespoons.
3. The Dye (I got mine from Dischem, the brand is "Dye it" in number 6.)

You'll also need some almost-boiling water, a large sink and preferably wear an old shirt to do the dyeing in.

Step 1 - Fill the sink with hot water, to about 1/3 of the way. There's no need to fill the sink up - that'll just dilute the dye. Then add the salt and stir (I just used a spoon) for a while till all the salt is dissolved into the water.

Step 2 - Add about 1/4 of the dye in the packet to the salted-water. Stir again till all the water is the colour of the dye. Don't be shocked when the dye is much darker than you were expecting - it'll come out lighter on your clothes and will still wash out a bit too.

Step 3 - Before you start, run your shirt under water, and then wring it out so it's damp. Then pop it onto a hanger - this is going to make sure that the edges are always straight.

Step 4 - With your damp shirt on a hanger, dip it into the dye solution as high as you want the lightest colour to appear. Remember that the dye is likely to run up the shirt a bit, so keep that in mind. Hold the shirt there for about 5 - 10 minutes.

Step 5 - Take the shirt out of the water, and add the rest of the dye to the solution so it gets a lot darker, and stir again.

Step 6 - Once the dye is properly stirred in, dip the shirt into the sink till the water level is as high as you want the darker shade to appear. Hold the shirt in place for another 5-10 minutes.

Step 7 - Rinsing the shirt after the dyeing process is arguably the hardest part. It's really important that you don't touch the dyed part of the shirt, or if you do, that you don't mess up the white part. The best way I've found is to hold the shirt up while a friend pours water over it, from the top. This ensures that the dye runs down, and doesn't "contaminate" the top, white part. Rinse it as many times is as necessary till no more dye is washing out, then hang it up to dry.

The BOS Earthwave Beach Festival

This weekend (29th and 30th of September) is the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival where an attempt is going to be made to break the current world records for "most surfers riding the same wave" [110] and "longest line of surfboards on a beach". The event is going to be held on Muizenberg beach, and the after-parties will be at Rafikis on Saturday night, and Brass Bell on Sunday night.

Apart from the surfing, there's a ton of activities lined up for the weekend from poster signings by top South African model, Tracy McGregor, to environmental talks by renowned adventurer, Braam Malherbe, and a treasure hunt for kids, plus stand-up-paddler races, the list is incredibly long. Basically, it's going to be a really exciting weekend in Muizenberg - and an excellent cause worthy of support.

Registration for the "most surfers riding the same wave" (Sunday) and "longest line of surfboards on a beach" (Saturday) will cost R50 and R20, respectively. If the list of sponsors is anything to go by, the event is promising to be pretty big, and having checked the weather forecast, I'm happy to say the chances of rain are unlikely!

Update: Unfortunately, they didn't manage to break the world record. There were over 300 surfers in the water when they made the attempt, but the final count of number of surfers riding one wave was 84. Still an awesome event and I'll definitely be back next year!

My res room: before and after

I found two pictures of my current res room on my phone today, one I took from the first time I saw it, and another after I'd done it up a bit. It's quite a remarkable change (if I may say so myself), and I'm really lucky to have gotten my own room!

The quality of the pictures aren't great - sorry about that :( Still cool to see that horrible boarding school-like rooms do have some potential.

5 of the best breakfast spots in Cape Town

Breakfast has, for a long time, been my favourite meal to go out for. I'm kind of a morning person and there's nothing better than having a divine breakfast in a cute cafe somewhere, as far as I'm concerned... So here are my top 5 places at the moment, there's so many more I have in mind, but I'm planning to do a series of "breakfast spots" so there'll definitely be more in future.

1. Cafe Puka Tamboerskloof

A cute, rustic establishment in Tamboerskloof I found by chance when driving past. Their prices were very reasonable and their coffee was strong - I ordered a croissant with mozzarella and my boyfriend ordered the english breakfast. Both were great, and arrived about 7 minutes after we had ordered them! But, we sat inside and the manager was consistently rude to one waiter/dish-washer which was quite awkward?

2. Arnolds Gardens

A classic favourite of mine, Arnold's, can be found on the ever-popular Kloof Street in Gardens. I always end up choosing their croissant with bacon, brie and Peppadews, but they're pretty well known for their early R14 breakfasts. My boyfriend really raves about their Eggs Benedict! I've been to Arnold's more times than I can count, that alone should be testament to how great the food and service is.

3. Mimi's Observatory

Mimi's is one of those fascinating places that you experience, the atmosphere is so homey and quaint, especially with their various board games available for enjoyment. Situated on Lower Main Road in Observatory, Mimi's has that rustic feel to it that no other place I've been to can really match. Their breakfast menu is quite impressive with a long list of traditional breakfasts as well as sandwiches and wraps.

4. Queen of Tarts Observatory

Queen of Tarts is also in Observatory, and also has a shabby-chic feel to it (am I getting predictable?). Better suited to those with a sweet tooth, and true to their name, Queen of Tarts has an admirable selection of tarts and other delicacies. There is also a charming courtyard round the back, but the interior decorations are what first caught my eye. Although a little on the pricey side (R12 for a coke), Queen of Tarts is a lovely place for a mid-morning treat.

5. Tamboers Winkel Tamboerskloof/Gardens

You can find Tamboers Winkel just off Kloof Street, next door to Cocoa Oola. Again, the decor is gorgeous; it feels like a loft out of New York with very high ceilings and a lot of bar seating.Their breakfast menu was short but not dissapointing! The small choice included a "Tamboers Breakfast", croissants or a unique take on Eggs Benedict, all of which use top, fresh ingredients and is served on a small board. Very authentic, very tasty!

Attending the first Vintage Wednesday

On Wednesday (29th August) I had the pleasure of attending the Launch of Vintage Wednesdays at Café Chic in Gardens. Basically, it was a host of various vintage stalls stationed around a restaurant/café with an awesome vibe. Those of you who have been to Café Chic will know that the décor is truly decadent and the cocktails are sublime!

There were about 10 different vintage stalls, each of them adding a different concept or product, and most of them boasted very reasonable prices.

The It’s Mine Now stall who were handing out much-appreciated marshmallows to passers-by. I loved their collection of cardigans and clutch bags.

Dark Days Exit had a very quirky stall manager, and a unique range of caps and T-shirts.

Lehza from Lehza Vintage is pictured showcasing her delightful range of vintage belts and bags, as well as some lovely pieces of jewellery.

The entertainment for the evening was supplied by Black Orchid Burlesque and Boogie 2.0 from 9pm onwards, unfortunately I couldn’t stay to see them, but I heard only good reviews.

Café Chic also had a promotion running early on in the evening where all cocktails were half-price and all beers were R12. Their range of cocktails wasn’t expansive, but they had the basics and had added a special Vintage Wednesday cocktail for the occasion.

I ordered the Vintage Wednesday, which came with a comically long straw, while my friend went for a Pimms Royale – both were delicious, and the ingredients were top quality.

Once the stalls had opened and began trading the venue was buzzing with keen shoppers – no one I arrived with left empty handed! From maxi skirts to intricate masks, there was something for everyone, and even I (who is not much of a ‘vintage gal’) went away with some lovely accessories and a cute bag.

Overall the event was well managed and turnout was excellent! My only concern was the dim lighting that made it difficult to see details and colours (I bought a beige bag thinking it was pink!). I had a great evening and will definitely be back in future.

5 minutes with Jonathan Duguid

Jonathan Duguid is something of a radio heavyweight, with 12 years of experience under his belt, he is best known for his drive time show on UCT Radio. I got 10 minutes to chat to Jono and see what life behind the mic was like.

You've been in radio for a long time, haven't you? How long has it been in total?

That is correct. I am currently in my 12th year of being on radio. I started out as a pukkie on a Christian station, left mid-high school, and got involved at UCT Radio when I started studying at UCT, and while I'm no longer a student, I am still a radio host at UCT Radio.

What do you actually do as the radio show host of Afternoon Drive on UCT Radio? How much of the content is scripted and what input do you have?

Well, as a radio host, I obviously host the show. I source all content myself through the wonders of the worldwide web, before the show starts. Nothing is scripted.

Do you choose the songs that get played?

I do, indeed. I have a master playlist set forward from the Music Department, which I choose my music from. Most of the music I play is commercial – to fit in with the audience of my timeslot.

If we tune into your show, what can we expect?

Apart from great jams, my show is entertaining and informative. I keep people company as they drive home, make them bob their head, turn up the volume, and let loose after a long day at varsity, school or the office.

What’s your favourite thing about being on radio?

Everything, I guess. It’s very difficult to choose something out in particular, although I do enjoy hearing what my audiences think I look like, after I meet them. Generally they’re very far-off.

Have you ever had any really embarrassing moments on air? Tell us about them

I have had embarrassing moments. Too many really, especially in my earlier days of radio. From forgetting to turn of the mic, to cussing on-air, to almost peeing myself. You name it, I’ve probably done it.

In your line of work you must have come across a few celebrities, care to name drop a bit?

Hahaha! Well, I have interviewed and met my fare share of celebrities, but I guess the most notable interviewees are Sir Ian McKellen, aka Gandalf or Magneto, and comedian Pablo Fransisco.

Are you hoping to transition from radio to TV at some stage?

I would like to, definitely. If I ever will, that’s another question all together. I have a face for radio, you see.

We know you have your show on UCT Radio, but do you do anything else?

I am a Digital Marketing Specialist, twitter and theatre whore.

If people want to tune in, how can they do so?

I'm on UCT Radio every Monday - Friday, from 3-6pm. Folks in the Greater Cape Town area and Southern Suburbs can tune in on 104.5fm. Everybody else can tune in online, from smartphone or computer.

Frozen Yoghurt vs. Ice Cream

The trending summer treat to indulge in these days is definitely frozen yoghurt, whether it be from Marcels or Wakaberry, or any other brand. Most of these companies are advertising the idea that frozen yoghurt is the healthier alternative to ice cream, a lot of them claiming to be something like "98% Fat Free". There's been quite a bit of speculation around this, and with summer around the corner I thought it worth while to investigate.

I decided to have a quick look at their nutrional information and make a fair comparison.

*Just a quick crash-course on reading nutritional information: Energy (kilojuoles) comes from three sources: Proteins (1g = 17kj), Carbohydrates (1g = 17kj) and Fats (1g = 37kj). It's easy to see why people frown upon high fat contents, but the truth is the amount of energy overall is still a good indication of which foods need to be avoided. Also, the concept of "sugar" is often misunderstood: sugar is a carbohydrate (like starch) and is not classified as a fat. (Seems taking Home Ec at school wasn't all in vain)

Wakaberry Frozen Yoghurt:

Protein (g/ 100g): 2.04
Carbohydrates (g/100g): 12.2
Fat (g/ 100g): 3.99
Energy (kJ/ 100g): 419

So from those lists we can conclude that the choice that needs the most hours to work off is the Ola Chocolate Ice Cream, followed by Woolworths' Vanilla Ice Cream and then by Wakaberry frozen yoghurt, and topping the list for best-diet choice is Marcel's!

It's pretty clear that if you're looking for a yummy treat on a hot day, the healthy choice is frozen yoghurt with about half the energy content of ice-cream!

It's important to remember though that these figures don't take into account the extras you add to your fro-yo, or the cone, so best to keep those to a minimum if you're wanting to slim down.

Vintage Wednesdays - The Launch

Something I'm getting quite excited about is the launch of "Vintage Wednesdays" at Cafe Chic in Gardens next week.

I'm not much of vintage girl myself, but a good friend of mine is quite a hipster so I've found myself tagging along to these sorts of things before, and they're growing on me in a big way.

The three things that are really getting me going about next Wednesday are Location, Cocktails and Shopping. The venue is Cafe Chic - a gorgeous Victorian house with tons of character and charm (check their site to see what I mean), that serves divine cocktails and tapas. Various stalls and tables are to be set up around the 'house' with clothes and accessories that are vintage-inspired.

Half price cocktails and R12 beer till 18:30, snacks and tapas served till 23:00 and the dress code is vintage (surprise!).

Campus Style - Winter Edition

Last Friday I took to Jammie Plaza and surrounds to find out what fellow students were wearing and what styles they thought deserved their closet space. With plenty of choice I narrowed it down to these 9 trendy individuals:

Imraan looks comfy and cosy in his knitted jersey and super cool red shoes.

Fashion conscious Kevin wears a faded denim shirt, a thin scarf and a pair of bright orange espadrilles to finish off the look.

Vicky looks laid back and warm, with her brown Ugg boots and animal print scarf.

These two girls were spotted looking very stylish. Palesa is pictured wearing a green blazer and Black ankle boots while Nonnie pulls off the high-waisted jeans and cardi look.

Catherine wears the ever-trendy tribal leggings with a denim shirt and black ankle boots.

Thami wears USA flag shorts with a teal lace shirt and shoes to match, keeping herself warm with a vintage leather jacket.

I really love Ashley’s mauve ‘Chinos and slops’ laid-back look. (You can’t see it in the pic, but he’s also got a pretty sweet 9gag bag!)

This royal blue blazer caught my eye, and I liked how Luvhani colour blocked by adding the dusty rose coloured, woolly scarf.

Those were my top 9 looks for the day, a big Thank You to all the lovely people who let me take pictures of them!
