So news has been slow as Trey does his symphony run, Phil and Bob open their new venues, and Umphrey's presses on with their world domination tour. Bits of news are dropping here and there, like the impressive line-ups coming from music festivals all over.

For the 7th year, Umphrey's McGee has been invited back to play at Bonnaroo, along side Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beach Boys, and Phish (some phans might say unfortunately). I doubt if just one, probably poorly scheduled, UM set will bring the northern fans down there, but with no summer tour dates coming out of the Phish team, those phans are definitely getting antsy and considering pricey ticket for the one undoubtedly standard show.

With so many Grateful Dead projects going on right now, and a major run coming up in April, we could have guessed that Furthur tour this summer would be minimal at best, but with the All Good Festival Announcement that came out Tuesday, we know that the band is taking a break, and notably the first big one since they came together in 2009. Individually, however, it doesn't seem like neither of the Dead guys will be slowing down. Phil Lesh and Friends will be headlining All Good this year, with Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby featuring special guest Brandford Marsalis, and old time tour buddies The Allman Brothers Band. Mickey Hart Band will also make an appearance at the festival, but don't expect any sort of reunion, tension between the alumni is still high and won't likely cease by July 19th.

Moving right on to weekly news, we saw the announcement of Junta coming out on vinyl earlier last week. In their second collaboration with national Record Store Day, Phish has decided to release 5,000 numbered copies of their first album, complete with 3 LPs full of Phish's first songs, originally self- recorded, produced, and distributed on tape in May 1989. Three years later it was remastered and re-released in a 2 cd set and has since achieved Gold status in sales. A random sampling of half of these vinyls will also come with a limited edition poster designed by Jim Pollack specifically for this release, so check recordstoreday.com to find a record store in your area that might have Junta on April 21, 2012.

Umphrey's is keeping us dancing in the wings with the slow trickle of UMbowl announcements. For the third time, the epic 4 set, fan dictated show will take place in Chicago, this year on April 27th, but it's never too soon to get the Umphkids psyched for the show. Following the initial announcement that came earlier this year, the band released an update that ticket and VIP information will be coming February 28 and 29m so get your credit cards ready if you're anywhere near Chitown- this is not a show to be missed. Honestly, if you can catch any of these shows on the spring tour going on right now, it's well worth the effort. This mega tour has been bringing them a lot of attention, and the two new covers they debuted last weekend are only adding fuel to the fire. Giving Columbus, OH, the first ever "Burnin' For You" Blue Oyster Cult cover and Detroit, MI, "Detroit Rock City" by KISS.

Phil and Friends just wrapped up an exquisite three night run in Colorado that has them all warmed up for the coming three week run at his own brand new restaurant and venue Terrapin Crossroads. The opening residency will feature his own soon Grahame Lesh and good friend Jackie Greene among others. Tickets went on sale Wednesday exclusively at terrapincrossroads.net but shorty after on sale, their new ticketing system malfunctioned and severely oversold tickets for March 17th. Via Facebook, the team kept everybody posted on what they re doing to resolve the issue and how they were compensating the people who bought tickets past the cutoff point. They decided to offer them passes to some special show, but the details are unclear and probably won't be public knowledge once they do tell those ticket holders. Phil even posted a special apology on the Facebook page, so check that out and keep up to date on everything going on at Terrapin Crossroads. -Carly Shields

Press Release: Phish 'Junta' Deluxe 3-LP Vinyl Available For Record Store Day

On Record Store Day, Phish will release Junta, the band's first full-length studio album, as a Limited Edition Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set, available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country. Junta marks the band's second release in conjunction with Record Store Day, and the first time Junta has ever been released on vinyl.

This LE Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies. Junta was recorded at Euphoria Sound Studios in Revere, Massachusetts in 1987 and 1988 on 16-track 2" tape and was mixed to 1/4" stereo reels. In addition to writing and performing all the music, the band produced the album themselves - gathering around Engineer Gordon Hookailo's console to do group fades since the studio lacked mix automation.

Junta was originally self-released on cassette tape in May 1989 with packaging created by the band (included in the new vinyl package). The album was remastered and rereleased as a double CD (and cassette) in October 1992. Junta was certified Gold but, until now, has never been heard on vinyl. The vinyl release was created from the original stereo master reels with lacquers cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the entire album (transferred from the new vinyl master).

2,500 of these Deluxe LP sets will include a brand new Limited Edition hand-carved, hand-printed linolium block poster by Jim Pollock, created exclusively for this release. These editions will be distributed randomly at participating independently owned record stores across the country, but will be clearly marked.

This LE Deluxe 3-LP vinyl set was created exclusively for Record Store Day. Junta will be available in stores only beginning Saturday, April 21st. For a complete list of participating record stores, please click this magic button.

Weekly Wrap-Up with Tela [2.13.12]

It's been a bit of a bumpy start to 2012 for Tela here at Oh Kee Pah. Bumpy in a good way, no doubt, but my move down to southern PA and starting my new job with All Good Presents has made keeping to my weekly routine fairly difficult, so readers- my deepest apologies. I hope you have found ways to get your news bites, though wildly less entertaining I'm sure.

I have to start this wrap up with news about Trey's symphony orchestra tour. Since his first kick in the early 2000s, he's been on and off with different organizations like the Vermont Youth Orchestra, regional groups from Nashville, Baltimore, and others, performing all over the east coast, treating phans and fans alike to orchestral arrangements of "You Enjoy Myself," "Guyute," and more of our favorite Phish tunes. Now, he's at it again, making stops in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Colorado, and Los Angeles, and according to reports from night one with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, these shows are going to be spectacular. Featuring a "First Tube" opener, a "Stash" closer, and six amazing favorites ("Water in the Sky" and "Divided Sky," as an example) sandwiched in between, followed by a set with an audience proposal and the epic YEM, topped off by an encore for the ages, the next show on Tuesday should be something equally as special. (Too bad for the guy who was going to propose at the show and on Valentines Day.)

Umphrey's McGee is doing big things on their tour, and they've offered a free download of the show at Super Bowl Village from 2/4. It was a pretty hot show and definitely worth downloading for your collection. Also worth checking out is their funny little clip announcing the date for UMBowl which will be hitting Chicago April 27th. They'll be traveling across the country going up and down making several stops in the next few weeks, so if they're coming to a town near you, be sure to stay updates on UMs website for opening acts and after parties in your area.

The Grateful Dead world has been keeping fairly quiet lately, as the Phil and Friends run is right around the corner and Lesh has been working hard to open the new restaurant and venue Terrapin Crossroads. The game that came out a few months ago is now in its tour planning phase, having collected more than 30,000 votes from Deadheads about their favorite shows and venues. The creators are building the tour now and developing the different parts of each show that are going to ultimately be the whole game. It's going to exciting to see where this goes, so if you're not playing yet check it out here.

Well it was generally a slow news week, as the American masses become more and more focused on the Presidential race, but for our little subculture as well, most eyes were not on the latest jam or update from these rockers. In Phish world, rumors abound and hotels are being booked on a whim, with no confirmation one way or the other. Based bon pure number of times this has been published, I would put money on June 23-26^th will be in Atlantaic City at Bader Field, probably not camping. Otherwise, it’s a totally crapshoot as usual. But to hold us over, another Tom Marshall track was just released and this time it’s a very early version of Farmhouse. The track is supposedly posted by Trey himself, with an accompanying note that explains the story of how they wrote the song- largely an act of chance and luck in none other than a farmhouse. Check out all of Trey and Tom’s demos on Marshall’s Soundcloud page.

In their 14^th year as a band, Umphrey’s McGee is finally getting the attention they deserve, playing two sold out shows in New York City, and going on to many others in their massive Spring tour. They got rave reviews from phans and critics alike, but check out Hidden Track’s 10 Best Moments of the run. There a plenty of tickets still available to many of the shows on the upcoming tour, so if you were hoping to catch them, don’t lose faith yet. There’s a ton of give aways and after parties to be paying attention to, so check their website for continuous updates and announcement.

The ever-developing Grateful Dead world had a few newsworthy stories, the first being Bob Weir’s very busy week. On Wednesday, the world was treated to a RatDog reunion of epic proportions, performed in and streamed live from Weir’s TriStudios in Marin County, CA. He is also scheduled to open Sweetwater Music Hall tonight (Friday), a venue that he has invested in to bring the music back to Marin County. Buddy and bassist Phil Lesh is also opening a restaurant and venue called Terrapin Crossroads just down the street, but he’ll have to top the line up slated for Sweetwater tonight- all signs point to another RatDog appearance and a few special guests, like Sammy Hagar.

And while Phil and Bob open venues and tour with their friends, Bill Kreutzmann is doing the same in Jungle Jam with BK3 and Mickey Hart announced a new tour and album in the works for Spring 2012. The album, Mysterium Tremendum, will be the Grammy-winner’s first release in 5 years and was supported by longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, who helped Hart with the words for this effort as well. He’s taking Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), long time bandmate Sikiru Adepoju, and the band on the road with a coast-to-coast 2 month tour starting in March.

Lastly, On February 4^th, Berkley, CA’s KPFA will broadcast it’s annual Grateful Dead fund-raising marathon. They will air archive shows hand picked by annual host David Gans, rare Jerry interviews, live performances and more. Tune in from 9am to 1am to catch some of this music marathon.
