Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition

“Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition,” featuring artists from around the country will be held on Saturday July 6th from 10am-3pm at The Saratoga Hilton, in downtown Saratoga Springs, New York. Developed and produced by a group of artists and fans known as the Mothership Art Collective, the art show will be held in the middle of a weekend of Phish, who play just down the road at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, July 5th-7th.

The lineup of artists slated to exhibit at “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition,” represent some of the best artists in the community. Longtime artists AJ Masthay, TRiPP, John Warner, Ryan Kerrigan, Branden Otto, Edward Wilson, Bruce Horan, Lauren Domsky and Isadora Bullock have been a part of Mothership Art Collective Art shows in the past and each have a large portfolio of concert art across a wide range of musical acts. Erin Cadigan, an artist from Woodstock, NY will be featuring her art, posters as well as her clothing line THREE. Joining the show for the first time is Nate Duval, an official poster artist who has an extensive history of creating unique posters for a number of musical acts. David Calarco, author of Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts: An Anthology by a Fan for the Fans will have copies of his book for sale at the show.

First timers include Bill Pompeii of Pompeii Prints, maker of posters, shirts and various pins that have gained acclaim among Phish fans, and Troy, NY artist Drew Suto, who as Senior Artist for Surrender to the Flow, designs the cover art for the Phish fan magazine handed out for free on lot at every show.

Pin makers and artists of the ever growing pin collector/trader community include Matthew Jurcic of 10 Minute Tube Designs, Jack Firestone of Party Time Pins, Willy of Page Side High and Adrian Sharpe of stuPINdous Creations. In addition to these pin makers will be Noah Phence of Zenster, Anthony Leetz of Ant Pharms Pins, Monk Cav and Tanner Council of MYFE. Designs, and Sam Sutton of PerPINdicular Pins who will feature their ever popular pin series and designs.

Non-profits included in “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition”, are The Mockingbird Foundation, which has given grants for music education totaling more than $700,000 over the past 15 years; Screens ‘n’ Suds, which combines craft beers and art to benefit the National MS Society and charities in Richmond, VA and Chicago, IL, raising over $75,000 since 2009; and PhanArt, a book and website created as a way to showcase the art made by Phish fans, raising money for The Mockingbird Foundation through donations from artists and fans, totaling over $10,000 since 2009.

Rock Art exhibitions have been held since 2003 with great success, as unique posters are made for Phish shows during the poster show weekend, making for a must-attend event during Phish tour, featuring some of the most unique concert art being produced today. ‘Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition” is the first event for 2013 produced by the Mothership Art Collective, a group within the Phish community comprised of artists and organizations who promote the art inspired by the band Phish.

The eclectic artists featured at this event show the broad scope of Phish related art and capture the inspiration of the band in their art. The creative fan base of Phish makes for amazing art inspired by the band, their music and the locales they play. The Collective will work hard to bring a show to the Phish touring public each year.

In keeping with the great tradition and success of past poster shows, “Summer in Saratoga: A Rock Art Exhibition” will offer free entry to all patrons and tubes available for purchase. Charitable donations from the event will be made to The Mockingbird Foundation, as well as a wide array of artists featuring posters to fit any budget. More artists will be announced in mid-June, as well as special edition works only available at the show, which will be available for viewing shortly thereafter at www.mothershipartcollective.org

Our good friend, Scott Goldberg, was on hand for Phish's tour opener in Worcester this past Thursday night and has been kind enough to share his view through the lens with us. The band returned in fine form opening with Buried Alive and never looked back. The second set featured glorious improv in Carini, Ghost, and Boogie On. PHISH DATES. That is all.

Okay fine, I guess it's about a week too late for that joke, might have been able to pull it off last week when Phish surprised us with a mid- Wednesday summer tour announcement. The massive phan hack of Phish.com that went down the day before is probably what really sparked the release, but I'm sure next time- be it a second leg or Labor Day run- they will secure the backend of the site so that kind of date testing can't go on. In any case, we're going to have to wait it out, and isn't that half the fun?

Maybe not so much, so without further ado (as if you haven't seen 'em already) Phish summer tour 2011 will kick off June 7th and 8th in Worcester, MA, hop down to Bonnaroo on the 10th, back up for a 3 night run at Atlantic City's Bader Field, and south again to Virginia for Father's Day weekend. Then they work their way through Cincinnati, Burgettstown, Cuyahoga Falls, ending with two nights in Nobelsville and two in East Troy, WI. To close the (hopefully first part of the) tour, New Yorkers get a special five nights, July 3rd and 4th at Jones Beach (though as a dry venue this was kind of an insensitive pick on Phish's part) and a glorious Friday to Sunday run at the beautiful Saratoga Performing Arts Center. As a displaced New Yorker with a full time job 5 hours away and a SPAC enthusiast, this is, to say the least, painful. However, many lucky heads will get to be part of many special shows up and down the east coast in the earlier parts of the summer, and hopefully the west coast will see some love too.

Umphrey's is finally getting to the west coast after what seems like an endless nationwide tour. They sold out the Filmore Friday night (3/9) and the Georgia theatre in a few weeks, but if you're in... basically anywhere in the United States, you can catch an Umphrey's show and probably should. UM Bowl in Chicago took longer to sell out than predicted, but ballots go out soon for the lucky fans who get to pick the sets. Umphrey's is truly a fan-oriented band, taking more and more steps to include the fans in band decision. For the upcoming sUMmer school festival, they've released an updated syllabus that includes 4 full sets, theory classes, business classes, open jams, private lessons, and more amazing opportunities for budding musicians and mega Umph fans alike.

To add icing to this already delicious cake, earlier this week the band announced another special show, called True Hollywood Story, An Intimate Acoustic Afternoon. Unplugged and on bar stools, the band plans to simplify fan favorites and give all the juicy background details of their favorites at the Hard Rock in West Hollywood this upcoming Friday. Capacity is very limited, so if you're in California, get your ticket soon for this amazingly special evening. Can't make it to the west coast? Fankix is streaming the show on Facebook for free in the weeks following.

Furthur is keeping things pretty cool right now, and after the announcement of Phil and Friends separate from Bob Weir, Bruce Hornsby, and Branford Marsalis at the All Good Music Festival, they had us nervous about a Furthur tour this summer. Only two days after Phish dropped their early summer plans, Furthur announced a short run in July and two dates in October without making any sort of fuss about it. The emphasis seems to be on their solo projects for the most part, even though their efforts have to be spread across everything. Team Weir also announced a free webcast of Bob performing with Trey's favorite indie group The National in support of Head Count, the youth voting activism group. Broadcast from TRI Studios on March 24, the event will also feature a round table discussion with John Perry Barlow between sets. Furthur's Summer Run & Greek October

The Furthur camp has quietly announced a short string of summer dates leading up to Bobby and Phil's individual solo sets at the All Good Music Festival. The tour kicks off in Rhode Island at Pawtucket's McCoy Stadium and comes to a halt in the home-state of OKP Headquarters, Michigan, sealing Futhur's first performance in the Mitten since forming almost three years ago. Additionally, Furthur confirmed two shows at LA's Greek Theatre the first weekend in October. Mail order and internet pre-sale information varies for each show and can be found here.

Phish Summer Tour 2012 [Leg I]

The Phish (from Vermont) have finally confirmed their plans to return to the road this Summer beginning June 7th with a two-day stand at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA and ending with three consecutive nights at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. The tour also features a return to the midwest meccas known as Deer Creek and Alpine Valley.

A limited number of tickets are available NOW through Phish Tickets online ticketing system at phish.portals.musictoday.com. The ticket request period is currently underway and will end Monday, March 12th at 11:59am Eastern. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, March 16th. No plans for old-school mail order have been released.
