Hi lovelies, hope you all had a wonderful holiday! With the arrival of the new year nearly upon us, it got me thinking of my major highlights this past year. 2011 has been exceptionally blessed year for me in regards to fashion. I've been so lucky to have had these awesome experiences, and meet so many wonderful people this year. So without further adieu, these are my highlights (in no particular order) of 2011! :

5 Things I Want to See from the Plus Size Industry in 2012!

2012 is nearly here, and I'm looking forward to a fresh start with a clean slate. I'm also looking forward to what the plus size industry will do next, and I thought I'd share what I would like to see happen in the new year :

1. Focus Groups! - Personally, I feel many brands are out of touch with their customers. They really don't know who their customers are, and what their customers want. Focus groups are great for clear communication, utilizing information, and to help improve your relationship with your targeted demographic. Now I know many of you are thinking, "that's what surveys are for!", but focus groups are more personal and it reassures your customer that their opinion and thoughts are being heard. I think anyone who owns/works for a plus size fashion company should invest in regular focus groups, because this will help your business in the long run.

2. Diversity!! - It's going to be 2012, and I still can't believe there is such a lack of diversity amongst the fashion industry. I feel like, I'm seeing the same model but dressed in a different outfit! I want to see someone my size (26+) modelling clothes in catalogues and fashion shoots. I want to see an array of different ethnic models who don't have the typical "hourglass" figure, because as we all know, plus size women are shaped differently! No curvy figure is ever the same. In the words of the fabulous Alissa Wilson (Stylish Curves) :

"I am one of those consumers who buy's alot when I see someone that I can identify with promoting the brand."

3. Reasonable Prices - For the longest time, plus size clothing has cost more than the average sized woman's clothing. I know plus size retailers set higher prices to cover costs etc, but if I'm going to be paying £50 for one garment, I expect it to be (at least) decent quality and not fall apart after a one or two wears. I'd like to see more affordable plus size clothing available in the new year.

4. Trendsetter - It seems plus size retailers/brands are struggling to keep up with current trends, and often hit the mark after a trend has sailed. Believe it or not, there are plus size women who want to be on trend and fashionable! Therefore, I'd like to see plus size brands get creative and make trends their own (who knows it might blossom into a new trend, never know until you try!), instead of following them loosely.

5. Events Galore - I love nothing more than socialising and having a good time with people, and it would be amazing if there were more plus size events throughout the year! Fashion shows, discussion panels, and preview showings of future collections are some of the events that I would like to see more of this year in the plus size industry.

Beautiful France!

Ma-Grande-Tallie.com has launched a new plus size magazine, 'Beautiful France', which is the sister publication of 'Beautiful UK'. This will be the first "plus size" magazine to be launched in France. Beautiful France will be available for free in PDF format and for iPad in the Apple App store. Here's what Ma-Grande-Tallie.com had to say about their new magazine :

"Beautiful France is a very fashion forward publication, even though it is in French, there are a lot of spreads and features that many non French speakers will be able to comprehend. Our premiere issue will feature around 30 out of the 85 pages of fashion spreads, which is rare for a plus size magazine. We also have several features from our UK sister magazine that include, Adele, Beth Ditto and Fluvia Lacerda. We also have an exclusive interview with Stephanie Zwicky of Blog de Big Beauty and we have a never before seen fashion spread featuring America's Next Top Model winner Whitney Thompson."

I love that plus size magazines are taking off like rockets, and gaining popularity around the globe. I'm definitely looking forward to the future issues of 'Beautiful France', what about you? Do you read plus size magazines? Do you find them useful? Let me know! :)

Hey lovelies,

Long time, no blog! *dodges the rotten fruit & veg pelting*

*Excuse the curly/wurly edges, my straightner couldn't catch my baby hairs!

First, allow me to apologise for disappearing without a word! It's been a whirlwind these past couple of months, and I've only just found the time to catch my breath! Let me catch you up to speed! In August I became the official social media coordinator for Evolve Magazine, and that is where majority of my time went towards. I should have given you a formal heads up, but things got so busy that I just became completely out of touch with my blog and my other social networking platforms.

I took an unofficial (much needed) break from the blogosphere. I know many of you have been wondering where I disappeared to (thanks for the messages & e-mails!), so now you officially know. For those who've been asking, yes, I'm ready to get back on the blogging wagon and I already have some posts ready to put out later this week (I hope you like them!). In the mean time, I've been catching up on your lovely blogs, and discovering new ones too! Looks like I have a lot to catch up on. And the next time I need a break, I'll definitely let you know instead of being 'gone with the wind'! ;)

Celebration! : Review/OOTD

Yesterday was my birthday, and I turned the big 2-0 (eeekkk)! My family and friends dragged me out to celebrate with a nice meal in central London. Luckily for me I had the perfect dress to wear. The lovely Ozlem from IGIGI sent me the 'Elisa' dress, which is the most gorgeous dress ever created in my humble opinion! I had lovely time, and I want to thank everyone for the sweet birthday messages, and for those who came out to celebrate with me!

PROS : I love everything about this dress! I love the simplicity of the dress, and the vibrancy of the chiffon bell sleeves. I feel like a woman in this dress, and I love how it compliments my figure. It's made out of this soft poly/elastane material, that falls elegantly into a A-line skirt which hits me just below my knees. It has a very generous fit, which makes it comfortable to wear and move around in with ease. This dress is very versatile, it can be dressed up or down, and you can also wear it off the shoulders.

CONS : It's slightly too big for me, but it's nothing a tailor can't fix! I suggest you size down for a better fit.

OVERALL : Yes, I would definitely recommend you get this dress! It makes me feel like a million dollars, and it'll be my go to dress for special occasions!

This collection is perfect for summer, with easy to wear pieces, a simple colour palette, and modern styling. Contrary to the edgier previous collection Femme Fatale, the SS12 collection showcases a romantic and softer feminine side to Damn You Alexis. Tess Munter is one of my favourite plus size models to date. Not only is she unbelievably stunning and fierce, but she's an actual plus size model! Standing at 5'5 and wears a voluptuous size 18, she has curves for days and knows how to rock them! Tess is mostly known for being the face of the US show 'Heavy'. She's the beauty editor for SKORCH magazine, and has been featured in INKED Aus/NZ for being a tattooed role model for women. And when she's not modelling, she works as a MUA and makes her own nifty accessories (which are now available to purchase!).

What I admire the most about Tess, is that she stays true to herself, and you can see that in every shoot or magazine spread that she does. She's inspired numerous amount of people, including myself and she is a rising star so keep your eyes on this beautiful lady! ;)

OneStopPlus UK has launched their A/W 2011 look book, which has a variety of stylish pieces that is perfect for layering, while keeping you warm and fashionable. OSP has taken A/W trends, such as jewel tones, prints etc, and created a collection that is versatile and easy to wear throughout the season. My favourite look from OSP's look book is the 'Glamourous Goth'! I love every single piece, especially the black leather skirt, and the black and white striped jumper!

Overall, I really like the new A/W collection from OneStopPlusUK! There are definitely a lot pieces that I'll be buying for my winter wardrobe (especially their boots!), that will be great additions to my closet.

MAT Fashion A/W 11...

MAT Fashion is back with their A/W 2011 collection! I had the amazing opportunity to get an exclusive sneak peek at their A/W catalogue, before it's release this Friday. Making the trends their own, Mat Fashion have once again created a stylish collection for the fashion conscious plus size woman. There are a couple of pieces that caught my eye, such as their faux fur gilets, belts, and this funky print dress on page 29 and it's outfit #9! My favourite outfit is on page 46 and it's number 5, I love the whole ensemble, especially the red berry cowl neck sweater and thigh high black boots!

New Brand Alert! : FLOW

I love nothing more than, coming across a new plus size brand that I've never heard before; introducing FLOW a brand new Malaysian fashion label for the curvy woman. FLOW offers a range of contemporary, casual, career, and evening wear in US 8 - US 16. Keep your eyes peeled, as they will be launching their online store soon. Now before you say anything, I've contacted FLOW and asked whether they'll be expanding their sizes, I'm still waiting for a reply and I'll let you know when they respond! ;)

In the meantime though, check out their A/W 2011 Holiday Collection, featuring the gorgeous twins Justine Selby and Tanya Johnston!

Laura Wells looks absolutely stunning in the September issue of Cosmopolitan Australia! Styled in a neutral palette with a pop of vibrant orange, Laura is sizzling in this fashion spread! I love every outfit featured, but my favourite has to be the last outfit, with the nude flared dress and the bright orange belt, fabulous!

Now, if only more plus size models were featured in fashion spreads on a regular basis, I would be completely happy!

Clements Ribeiro for Evans!

The dynamic design duo Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro, will be designing for Evans early next year in March. The couple seem really enthusiastic about their forthcoming plus-size collection, as they announced it at a formal dinner saying :

"Style is not about size, it's about shape and creating beautiful clothes that girls and women will feel great in. It's what we've always done" - Suzanne Clements

The design duo are striving to become the next "stars" in the plus-size market and leave their mark in the plus-size industry. While I find it refreshing that they don't seemed perturbed by designing a plus-size collection, I hope they bring the same amount of energy and creativity that is present in their own line. I do have high hopes for this collection, and I can't wait for it to be released in March 2012.

Simply Be Lauch Event : Zandra Rhodes A/W Collection!

I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Zandra Rhodes launch event which showcased her A/W collection for Simply Be. The event took place at the swanky Paramount, with the most breath-taking views of London that I have ever seen!

When I arrived, the event was in full swing, everyone was chatting away, and having a good time. Meeting the competition winners, was a real treat! All of the gorgeous ladies were wearing Zandra's collection, and they looked absolutely amazing! I was also able to catch up with some of my fellow bloggers, Naomi, Lauren, and Kat. I also got to meet Rivkie Baum, the editor in chief of SLiNK magazine.

The Simply Be team and Chase PR are so lovely, and made me feel welcomed right away! Meeting Zandra Rhodes was surreal, she is after all a fashion icon! She was brilliant, she was rocking her electric pink bob, bright pink chiffon tunic (from the collection), sparkly flares, and the most flamboyant red platforms ever made! She is quite the character, but she's also very down to earth and mingled with everyone!

When I first saw the collection on Simply Be's preview site, I was unsure and didn't think it would work for me. However, after seeing the collection in person on a variety of curvy figures (including myself), I was pleasantly surprised and I actually like all of the pieces! I tried on the peacock feather jacket, which was a size 20 and to my surprise it actually fit (it was kind of snug in my arms, but other than that I was quite comfortable in it)! So the collection is very generously sized and flattering for the curvier figure, I'll definitely be purchasing the peacock feather jacket, when the collection is released.

Overall, I had a brilliant time, it was lovely to meet everyone who attended, especially the Simply Be team since they're based in Manchester! I hope Simply Be will host another event in London, because the launch event was a great experience.

Curvissa Launch Event!

Last Tuesday, I attended the Curvissa launch event at the decadent Cafe de Paris in the heart of Piccadilly Circus. I arrived an hour early, so I had time to spare and decided to explore Piccadilly until the event started. When 11:30 am rolled around, I made my way to Cafe de Paris, and was greeted by a glamorous hostess who reminded me of Dita Von Tesse. I then descended downstairs, where I was presented with my very own pass for the event, and entered the vibrant club. Lights were flashing, music was playing, and people were buzzing with anticipation about the catwalk show.

Plush sofas and cushions lined the upstairs balcony, where I sat and mingled with the lovely Charlotte and Joe, who handles all of the social media for Curvissa. Then the sweet Lauren from Pocket Rocket Fashion joined us, and before we knew it the runway show began. The runway show featured the new Autumn range, and a lot of pieces caught my eye, such as the gorgeous 'Military Style Lacy Longline Jacket' with lace detail, along with the 'Layered Georgette Tunic' . The Autumn range has a mixture of each trends for the colder season, so you'll definitely be up to date on all the latest fashion crazes.

After the runway show, Lauren, Kathryn (from 100 percent people), and myself had the opportunity to look at the range in more detail with celebrity stylist Fiona Parkhouse. We had a long discussion about the plus-size industry, and Curvissa really took our input on board. Curvissa are determined to make a difference in plus-size fashion, and truly listen to their customers. While we were talking, the media team were filming us, which was quite nerve racking but I managed to stay calm and talk clearly (at least I hope I did!).

As soon as we were done talking to Fiona, Lauren and I were whisked off to interview the face of Curvissa, Josie Gibson! For those of you who aren't familiar with Josie, she is the winner of Big Brother series 11! I got to interview Josie first, and she looked absolutely stunning! Once again, cameras were rolling and big bright lights were blaring, but I survived! Lauren was next to interview Josie, and they were overcome by a fit of giggles! They got there in the end eventually! It was such an amazing experience to meet Josie, I'm glad I got to meet her, because she is so sweet and funny!

After the interview, the event was (sadly) over, and it was time go home! All of the Curvissa team came to say goodbye, and it was lovely to meet all of them! On the way out, there were yummy cupcakes with the Curvissa logo on it to take home. Overall, the Curvissa launch event was a wonderful experience, I love the Curvissa team and what they're trying to achieve (quality plus-size clothing!). I'm looking forward to seeing their progress, and I can't wait to attend their next event!

Review : So Fabulous!

The lovely K&Co, were kind enough to sent me two items from the So Fabulous! range to review, and fabulous they are indeed! I chose the Embellished Neck Tunic and the Drapey Cover Up, which are now on sale at K&Co.

Embellished Neck Tunic

Sorry for the dodgy pic! I need a new camera :(

PROS : This tunic is made of a soft stretchy viscose material, and you can dress this top up or down, also the embellishment detail on the neckline is really eye catching. It has batwing sleeves which means you'll be able to move freely and stay cool. The fit is true to size and it also has an elasticated band at the end, so you can wear it long or short depending on your preference.

CONS : The embellishment makes this top really itchy/irritating. I don't know if it's me having a reaction, but it's really unpleasant. So I suggest wearing a tank top underneath to protect your chest.

OVERALL : 7/10 - Lovely top that is comfortable and great for the summer!

Drapey Cover Up

PROS : This cardigan is light weight, and made of a soft viscose material, which is perfect for summer if I want some coverage while staying cool. The colour is a lovely neutral tone which is on trend right now, and I love the tab details on the shoulders. The fit is pretty generous, and I would recommend sizing down because it's quite loose and flowy, unless you like the oversized look!

1. What inspired your blog name?

I was actually inspired by Shianna Tucker of "A Thick Girl’s Closet". I liked the idea that through her tumblr, I was able to essentially get a sneak peek into the closet of thick girls all over the world. Therefore, that idea of a “closet” stuck with me. Also, there are not many fashion blogs out there focused on thrifting so I wanted thrifting to be the vocal point of my blog. Thus “My Thrifted Closet” was born.

2. What inspired you to do a fashion blog?

I have ALWAYS loved fashion, even in the days that I was caught up in my urban brand phase. I loved dressing well and seeing other people dress well. I began surfing blogs a lot and I wanted to become a part of a world of people with dreams and aspirations that they share with the world. Fashion blogging is more than just about personal style, it’s about showing the world who you are and allowing them to love you for it. I made the best choice because now I can’t stop blogging.

3. What are 3 things that you love about yourself?

1. I LOVE my curves. Sure I want to work on toning some areas and what not, but I forever wanted to be a curvy girl. I mean it fits me well. I am beautiful.

2. I love how optimistic I am. Sometimes it is confused for gullible, but I love finding the good in people and things. Don’t get me wrong I’m a realist too, but I like to find the silver lining.

3. I love my smile and how down to earth I am. Though I have been confused for being stuck up, you will usually see with me a smile on my face and willing to talk and engage with people. My nose is NOT in the clouds.

4. What do you enjoy about fashion blogging?

I enjoy the people I've met. Oh my, there are just adorable people out there that are sooooo supportive and loving. I love being mind raped, like seeing amazing people with killer styles that just make me stare. There are some SUPERheroes out there in the blog world and I’m enjoying getting to know all of them. I also enjoy the times when people say I inspire them. I never set out to inspire people, but I’m proud and humbled that people gain confidence and begin their thrifting journey through reading my blog.

5. What is the one accessory you could not live without?

I can’t live without my jewelry. Idk I can put on a tshirt and jeans and once I have on the most banging jewelry I think I’m the hottest thing walking. Yeah jewelry for 600 Alex lol

6. Who is your favorite model and why?

Whoa. Umm… I really don’t get into models that much, but I’d have to go with Tyra Banks though she is basically retired. I loved to watch America’s Next Top Model and I always wanted to “smile with my eyes.” As she’s matured in the last few years, she definitely pushes that there are different women out there with different bodies who are worthy of being seen as beautiful and extraordinary. I would love to hang with Tyra one-on-one. She just seems so real, sweet, and down to earth. We must be girlfriends in another life.

7. Who is your style icon and why?

Hmmmmm when I am asked this question, I always have to reply everyone. I mean, I walk down the street and I am inspired. As long as a person is unique, stays true to self, and WORKS an outfit, I consider them an icon and someone who inspires me. My friends are my icons. They are soooo fly. They make me better as cliché as that may sound.

8. How would you describe your style?

Ugh, umm, idk lol. I love vintage clothes. I love puffy sleeves, large shoulder pads, bright colors, and bold prints. I guess I’m a misunderstood vintage teen LOL. When my boyfriend tells me “Babe, I love your style. It’s so different.” I sometimes respond, “Baby, I’m just a hippie.” So idk. Sometimes I’m wearing sundresses, other times men’s ties, loafers, and vests. Other times, revealing lace. I guess it depends on the day and how I feel.

9. Name your favorite places to shop for clothes & accessories.

It HAS to be the thrift stores lol.. I mean, I wear mostly thrifted outfits and jewelry. I really only got into thrifting Spring 2010, but I’m HOOOOOKKKKED. As a poor college student, I don’t believe in spending a lot of money on clothes. I love Evans as well. I get some cute things from thrifty stores such as Burlington Coat Factory, Marshalls, etc. I’ll shop anywhere once the price is right.

10. Share a fashion tip.
Dress your body the right way. Yes, there is a wrong way. Some clothes because of its cut and proportions isn’t meant to fit a larger girl. It will drape in the wrong place, lay awkwardly, etc. Just because it comes in our size, doesn’t mean it’s made for our curves. In loving who we are and embracing our God given curves, we must treat them right, by draping them with clothes that compliment and show them off.
