Khloe Kardashian Joins Mix 102.9 to "Mix It Up"

The Kardashians already dominate the TV ratings. It looks like Khloe is aiming to add to the list of Kardashian World Domination with her announcement of a partnership with Dallas radio station Mix 102.9 FM. Khloe will be hosting a daily radio show from noon to 1:00 PM.

She published this post on her website today, saying:

Hi dolls! I have some very exciting news for you. I’m returning to radio!!!!!! I’ll be joining the team at Mix 102.9 every day from 12-1pm CST for my very own show, The Mix Up with Khloé, and I could not be more thrilled about it! Doing radio in Miami a few years ago was some of the most fun I’ve ever had and I can’t wait to get back into it here in Dallas! You all know that I love to talk LOL, so this is the perfect gig for me. I can’t wait to get started!

My first show will be this Monday, January 30, and I am beyond excited! To my fans outside of Dallas, you can listen live on www.mix1029.com. WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!

Meet Renee Rouleau: Dallas Skin Care Expert and Celebrity Esthetician

The tagline on this blog says that I intend to bring you the scoop on the "hottest events and coolest people in Dallas". Most of the time, I introduce you to the notables as I encounter them around town at parties or events.

One of my New Year's resolutions was to bring you more profiles of people I think are unique, interesting, larger than life and that provide our city with some flavor. Another resolution, was to implement more video into this blog. So today I am fulfilling both of those resolutions with this interview on Renee Rouleau.

I run into her at cocktail parties from time to time, and I always walk away wanting to know more about her. She just gives off a cool vibe. So, I asked her if she'd let me interview her for this blog. She not only accepted, she offered to give me a facial in her One Arts Plaza salon after the interview. Suh-weet! And considering that Hollywood stars like Demi Lovato, Brooke Sheilds, Sofia Vergara and Jessica and Ashlee Simpson trust her with their skin, I was excited for the experience.

Below is a smidgin' of our chat. I hope you enjoy getting to know a little bit about Renee. I will be publishing Part Two of our interview tomorrow where Renee will give us some of her best tips for maintaining beautiful skin.

I'm sure you won't be shocked to hear that my facial was relaxing and decadently enjoyable. Renee generously loaded me up with products to take home. I've only been using them for a few days, so I can't really tell you yet how my skin feels about them. But I can tell you that so far, I am loving her products for two reasons:

1) PACKAGING: from a users perspective I love her packaging. Everything comes is a tube or container some sort of squeeze top. No digging in jars and getting creams or lotion under your nails. This packaging allows you to squeeze out the exact amount you need, so it's easy to use and you don't waste product.

2) SMELL: everything I have used so far smells clean, fresh, minty and delicious. No old lady, heavy flowery or medicine-like smell. You can almost taste how clean the products smell and I love that.

Meet the Fresh Faces of Fashion for 2012

Yvonne Crum, creator of the Fresh Faces of Fashion program and her BFF and usual partner-in-crime, Jill Rowlett, held court this past Tuesday at Dee Lincoln's Bubble Bar to the debut of the new crop of beauties who will hold the title for 2012.

Modern Luxury reveals the "Fresh Faces of Fashion"

So, what the heck does it mean to be a FFF and how are they chosen?

Over the past several months, Modern Luxury magazine has been collecting nominations for the program. One has to be not only stylish on the outside, but be able to serve up a dossier of charitable works and contributions to the community at large.

The 12 women selected to represent the program serve as stylish ambassadors to raise awareness and much needed funds to benefit the North Texas Suicide and Crisis Center.

These lovely lasses will appear in the March issue of Modern Luxury and walk in a runway show at the 6th annual Fresh Faces of Fashion Gala that will be held on March 23 at Stanley Korshak and be feted at a dinner immediately following at the Rosewood Crescent Hotel.

There is also a fierce competition to see who can sell the most raffle tickets for a chance to win a new Mercedes from Park Place Motorcars! And the competition is not necessarily between the 12 FFF. It's to see which of them can outsell Yvonne Crum! To date, the Fresh Faces of Fashion events have raised over a million dollars for the Suicide and Crisis Center in the past five years. Pretty darn impressive!

Dr. Sheron Patterson Preaches Blessings and Bling

Saks Fifth Avenue at the Dallas Galleria held a luncheon/book signing on January 12^th to launch Dr. Sheron Patterson’s latest book, “The Blessings & Bling: How Faith and Fashion Helped Me Survive Breast Cancer”.

When Sheron Patterson put off a shopping trip to drop by a medical center for her annual breast exam, she thought she'd be in and out and back to her shopping. But when the results came back positive for cancer, she was stunned.

That diagnosis eventually produced a life's work focused on helping others face challenges. Bling - fashion—helped Patterson face her cancer head-on. From the depths of despair surrounding her diagnosis to a heart filled with a gratitude as she looks back on her journey, she tells the story of Blessings and Bling to help you see hope.

I was thrilled to cover this event since it brought two of my most favorite things together fashion & faith! The afternoon started off with Jan Strimple sitting down next to me, which ALWAYS makes me immediately question what I am wearing and why I didn’t take more time to look more fashionable! As if that pressure (self applied, I agree) wasn’t enough there was a quick fashion show and accessorizing session with a Saks Stylist, Becky and two beautiful models from Kim Dawson Agency.

With the fashion section complete I sat in awe of Dr. Patterson and her bold, honest answers to the questions put before her by the audience. She spoke of how she broke down, down to the floor, when the doctor told her she had cancer. You could feel her pain.

She said it took more than one person and one time for her to want to see the good in this happening to her. Then she spoke of how lying bed she asked God, “How I can use this for your glory?” That’s when the answer came ~ tell your story!

As she told her story I found myself loving her quotes and saying "AMEN!" a lot!! Here are two quotes that really made me smile:

I left the luncheon feeling so inspired & encouraged! Ready to take any burden before me and find a way to make it a blessing! Grab her book if you need some encouragement ~ it has a TON!

Texas Women Saddle Up for Season Two

I'm as happy as a hog in slop to hear that my favorite rootin' tootin Cowgirls are coming back to CMT for another season of Texas Women. If you recall, I told you about the casting call they put out in early December which was a pretty firm indication this was happening. But it's nice to see the gals make an official declaration tonight via this photo on Twitter!

So, will we see some new faces in addition to Ali, Anna, Hannah and Brooke? I don't know yet, but I'm working my connections to find out and will keep you posted!

I am looking forward to being successful and accomplishing some goals with horses I have been training and I have some other projects in the works. There most likely will be some new faces but I can't say who or how many!"

UPDATE (January 18, 2010, 7:44 PM) Ali Dee tells me, "I can't wait for y'all to see the craziness that will be Season 2! I'm excited for everyone to continue to get the inside look into my roller coaster ride of a career in country music... Expect things to get a 'lil wild!!!"

Golden Globes 2012: Fashion Recap

I love award shows. I don't really care about who wins what awards so much as I love to watch the red carpet runway that precedes each event. There are always breathtaking moments of glorious triumph, and cringe-worthy moments where you wonder "What the hell was she thinking," and, "Did she actually pay a stylist to put her in that!?" The Golden Globes is always one of my favorite shows and this year turned out lots of good and bad moments:

THE BAD.

1) Madonna in Reem Acra: There is no one on the planet who is a greater Madonna fan than me. I spent my 18th birthday at the Bronco Bowl singing "Dress Me Up" along with Madonna on her "Like A Virgin" Tour and I've been an avid fan ever since. But, Madge, what the hell were you thinking with that one glove on your left hand? And this dress totally smashed your boobies. You don't smash down your best asset - you lift them up, squeeze them together and show them off!

2) Jessica Biel: I couldn't find the name of the designer she was wearing. And maybe it's because it came from some old vintage store in West Hollywood. It looks like it was made from an old lace tablecloth and there was a droop in the front that gave her a third boob. Luckily for Jessica, everyone was so busy looking for that engagement ring she supposedly just received from beau Justin Timberlake, that hopefully they weren't paying attention to this awful dowdy dress. PS: she wasn't wearing the ring.

3) Meryl Streep: While she seems like she would be the coolest person on the planet to hang out with, fashion has never been Streep's strong suit. Again, I couldn't find a designer to attach to this horrific cowgirl inspired gown. Maybe her stylist found it at a resale shop in Dallas left over from an old Cattle Barron's Ball. It needs to mosey on over to the barn for a good burning...

4) Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen: I started my evening watching red carpet coverage on E! and when I first saw this dress on Kelly I thought it was amazing. The peacock blue color is stunning and it fits her like a glove. Then... I saw the bottom. The mermaid cut makes it look like she is an octopus and eight arms are about to explode out from underneath that gown. Blech. If it had been straight all the way down, she would have made my "Best" list.

The Good.

1) Salma Hayek in Gucci: When you are married to the man who owns Gucci, Yves St. Laurent and Bottega Veneta, there is no excuse for ever looking bad a day in your life. And Salma did her hubby proud tonight! From her ombre hair to the color choice of the beaded corset, Salma is flawless.

2) Paula Patton in Monique Lhuillier: I saw several gowns in this canary yellow color, but Patton rose about the rest in this beautiful strapless number. Perhaps it was her olive skin that gave her the advantage over the paler white girls trying to pull off the same color.. Just sayin'. Work what you got!

3) Sophia Vergara in Vera Wang: Was not loving the stick straight hair, but I did love this beautiful rich navy gown. Take note, Kelly Osbourne, this is how you wear a mermaid cut dress. I think Vergara would have to work hard to find something that looked bad on her. Her body is fantastic and her sense of humor makes her that much more appealing.

4) Kate Beckinsale in Cavalli: This gown is a wonderful example of how you don't have to wear the loudest color or have something plunging down to there to make a statement. It's cut simply, draped beautifully, is a lovely muted neutral tone, not overloaded with heavy jewelry - and she looks like a Princess.

Hit or Miss?

These three looks I couldn't decide if I loved or hated... If nothing else, they made me think and ponder them, which is a win in and of itself in a competitive red carpet stampede of beauties. What do you think?

1) Piper Perabo in Theyskens' Theory: At first glance I thought this gown washed her out. I didn't love the taupe color with her pale skin and blonde hair and all nude makeup. If she had worn a dark scarlet lip and had a POP of color on her face, it would have helped. The gown (for the most part) was entirely see through which was kind of sexy, but also a bit trashy. And she kept messing with the skirt. Everytime she stood up or moved 3 inches on the red carpet she was flouncing the skirt out to make sure it was billowing properly. It felt very contrived and high-maintenance.

2) Sarah Michelle Geller in Monique Lhuillier: S.M. told E! news that her 2-year old daughter picked out the dress. That's not cute, it's stupid. At first glance I liked the bold print, but the more I looked at it, I disliked the tye-dye effect and it felt a little summery for a January event.

3) Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace: Angie has such a bold personality and force-of-nature presence, that I feel like this dress makes her look hard. She needs something billowy and soft to make her more likeable. This severe cut and harsh slash of color makes her look like the Evil Queen in a Disney movie.

The Ladies of Big Rich Texas Go Nude

"If you are not wearing the right accessory, then you might as well be nude." That is the philosophy of the Accessories in the Nude (AIN) event. Flair for Fashion produced the AIN kick-off party held Saturday, January 14 at The Spa Bar, which was hosted by Fashionistas founder, Heidi Dillon.

Perched on a high-back white chaise, I teased Heidi that her high-collared, black leather top by Rick Owens made her look like the Evil Queen in Snow White. She was anything but, as loyal fashion subjects took their turn for a few words with the benevolent ruler of Dallas' fashion scene.

The AIN competition showcased fabulous accessory designers Maria Day, Shirley Zago, Khrome, Paula Parish, Morgan Moss, Trudi Bell, & Becca Jett. Judging their works were Eddie Nelson Barnett fo Eddie & Co. Showroom, Debra Jones of Jones 2000, Toni Duclottni of CW33 and House of Haute, Andre Terry of IMG Designs and Sallie La Blanc of Visual Advantages. The winner will be announced at the AIN - Fashion Show on March 17, 2012, hosted by Courtney Kerr and Daylon Pereira from Bravo’s Most Eligible Dallas.

Dillon told me, "I am very passionate about supporting emerging fashion and accessories designers in our area. There is so much undiscovered talent in Dallas and it thrills me to be able to participate in providing a platform for them to showcase their work. Fashion is commerce, after all, and it brings beauty, excitement and glamor to our city."

Providing another layer of entertainment for me, was the fact that they were filming scenes for the upcoming season of Big Rich Texas. I can't believe that as much as I have written about this show, this event was my first time to meet Leslie Birkland and her god-daughter, Kalyn Braun. Leslie is even more gorgeous in person and after seeing the new commercial for Season Two that just hit the airwaves - I can't wait to see more of her!!

Like most Americans these days, my family eats out a lot. Usually 3-4 nights a week. Between my son's sports practices and games, client events and my busy social life - who has time to cook? And even if I do have the time, I'm too tired! It's really hard to find nutritious food, especially foods your kids will eat when you dine out.

According to the Let’s Move initiative, one in three American children is considered overweight or obese. Children also consume 31 percent more calories and 56 percent more fat than their peers did 40 years ago.

Chick-fil-A® is taking another step in continuing to address the issue of childhood obesity by debuting one of the nation’s most nutritious kid’s meals by adding Grilled Chicken Nuggets as an alternative for children. The legendary Simon Doonan dropped by Barney's New York Thursday evening to celebrate his latest book, "Gay Men Don't Get Fat". The diminutive Doonan is best known for his role as the Creative Director at Barneys for 25 years. After a shake-up at the luxury retailer, he's now creative ambassador-at-large.

Not only is Doonan super stylish (if you're into Paul Smith shirts and designer sneakers), he is a cheeky memoirist, provocative columnist and always hilarious chronicler of his very gay, very fun New York City life with husband Jonathan Adler, the potter and interior design expert, and their Norwich terrier Liberace.

Turning out to catch a glimpse of this larger than life personality were John Clutts, She Reigns rainwear designer Cathy Williamson, actress/model LeeAnne Locken, DFW Style Daily Contributor and stylist Jim Duran, fashion designer Isabel Varela and event planner Rhonda Sargent Chambers.

So, does Doonan miss his window dressing days? "I dressed windows for almost 40 years. When I finally put down the glue gun last year it was something of a relief," said Doonan, "Ditto the staple gun. However, I would highly recommend a career in window display to any budding fashionista. It's been great for me."

Doonan says the intended audience for this book is straight women. "I want to liberate the women of the world and teach them to live with the stylish bravado of we gays — and wee gays like me," chuckles Doonan. "Being a woman has become so complicated and pressurized. I want to make it easier, or maybe just more creative. Fashion and style should be about personal expression."

I loved this article on today's Dallas Observer's blog, City of Ate. I am totally down for this challenge. And this is one game where I know I could give my husband a total smack-down.

Phone Stacking: The New Dinner Game That, Let's Be Honest, We're All Too Weak to Play

GetKempt had a story this week about a new dinner challenge that's a test of will and stamina. Think quarters, but less eye-hand coordination.

It's called "phone stacking," and it requires everyone, at, say, a dinner party or happy hour, to relinquish their cellulars to the middle of the table and leave them there for the duration of the meal. Be it a game, mandate, stress-test or perhaps welcome relief, it seeks to quell the shit-storm of social media-induced rudeness we've collectively adopted, putting technology ahead of good company.

All rings, dings, beeps, quacks, and blinks are to go unanswered. Taunting you. Laughing at you. Frolicking in the joy of knowing who has done what, where, when and how, while you -- lonely, little you -- must sit amongst friends and focus on them only.

That catch in phone stacking is that the first person to pick up their phone has to buy dinner for everyone else.

Glenn Close Premiers New Film "Albert Nobbs" in Ft. Worth

There has been a lot happening around Dallas in the past year with regards to the small screen. But, fear not, we have not been overlooked by the big silver screen!

"Albert Nobbs" is a new film with a North Texas connection that was produced by Glenn Close, and in part by Fort Worth real estate tycoon John Goff and his wife, Cami. The Goffs — who hadn’t invested in a movie prior to "Albert Nobbs" — were drawn to the storyline after attending a dinner party hosted by Dallas Real Estate businessman, John Amend and his wife, Teresa, at Mount Vernon at White Rock Lake in 2010.

Fellow blogger and Real Estate blogger, Candy Evans attended an invitation-only, red-carpet screening last night for a new film with a North Texas connection. Evans says, "Trust me, this is not a movie you want to see - you MUST see it. I do not want to give away the story, but in a way, there is a real estate theme trickling below the surface." Well, now we know why Candy loved this flick!

The $8 million indie drama stars Glenn Close, who portrays a woman disguised as a man in 19th century Ireland to maintain employment at a hotel. Rodrigo Garcia directed the film, which was filmed in Ireland.

“I think a lot of people can relate to the movie,” John Goff said. “There is a lot of strife going on in society now with the economy. It’s somewhat different time periods and extremes, but people will relate to the movie about overcoming the odds and working through tough times.”

"Albert Nobbs" opens in theaters on Jan. 27.

Bob McPherrin bursts onto children's book scene with Stingray Cole series

Last month, I was asked to co-host a party at the Hilton Anatole's Gossip Bar. The Anatole's General Manager, Bob McPherrin, was in attendance and we had a cocktail and chatted about this and that.

Imagine my surprise, when I got a press release a few days later announcing the release of McPherrin's new children's book. What!? My curiosity was piqued so I reached out to Bob to learn more.

Bob McPherrin is launching himself into the competitive children’s book scene with an exciting new series entitled Stingray Cole & the Elm Street Daredevils. Published in Oklahoma City by Tate Publishing, the introductory book of the series, The Mysterious Tale of Culpepper Mansion, was released on Nov 8, 2011.

The series is based on the exploits of 12-year-old seventh-grader Stingray Cole and his diverse circle of friends, who find themselves embroiled in various exciting mysteries which they solve with a combination of ingenuity, teamwork and contagious good humor.

McPherrin was gracious enough to send me an autographed copy for my 11-year old son to "review". After reading the book over the Christmas holiday Jackson said, "It was GREAT," making a thumbs up sign. "What was so great about it," I asked? "I liked how there were lots of different characters and they were all interesting."

McPherrin credits his early exposure to The Hardy Boys series as his primary influence, although he is quick to make a distinction. “As much as I loved The Hardy Boys series, the Stingray Cole series is far more inclusive in its array of main characters, and includes kids of diverse ethnic backgrounds, ages, and religions, and even includes Stingray’s 75-year old grandfather. These characters reflect today’s world much more accurately than those of the older series.”

So, in his 11-year old way, Jackson totally backs up what McPherrin is trying to accomplish. Great work, Bob!

McPherrin goes on to explain his impetus for trying his hand at writing. “After seeing too much objectionable entertainment directed at kids today, whether in movies, TV shows, video games, or popular music, I grew increasingly convinced that a mystery series that provided thrills and chills, but also presented characters that exemplified the kinds of qualities that parents strive to instill in their children, could become very popular.”

Someone said to me recently, "Your Rolodex must be amazing!" to which I replied, "You know, it kind of is!" I have met many incredible people in the past year and I am convinced, now more than ever, that Dallas is one of the greatest cities in the world!

I asked some of Dallas' most famous faces to reflect back and tell me what they most enjoyed about this holiday season and if they have set a New Year's Resolution for themselves. For the past week, I have brought you their stories. I hope you have enjoyed this series and have made some goals for yourself in 2012. Most of them we probably won't keep, but it's always good to at least think about them, even if you promptly forget what it is you were supposed to be working on.

I thought I would end this series with my own glance back at this Christmas.

"My favorite thing about this Christmas holiday is that my son was out of school, which means I didn't have to wake up to an alarm clock for TWO WEEKS. That's been heaven.

And because there were no events happening for me to cover, I haven't shaved my legs for a week! Ah, life is good. I got a fabric steamer from Santa that I am beyond excited about. (You know you're getting old when you are excited about practical gifts.)

We spent Christmas Day at the Gaylord. We leisurely grazed the massive buffet while enjoying a live band crooning holiday tunes, then shivered through the ICE exhibit. The hotel was gloriously decked out in holly and tinsel and it was a fun, family day to be sure!

Oh, and my New Years Resolution, is that my son is going to walk our dog every day. He's just so happy about that."

"My favorite part of the holiday season is spending time with the family. Nothing means more to me, and this is the only time of year that I completely clear the schedule for it.

But before doing so I always make sure to plan a trip to New York City with no business attached. To me, it just makes the holidays feel so real with everything that goes on there during December.

My New Years Resolution is to start the day earlier whether it be in the office or at the gym. Winning the day is so much more important the older we get than winning a night.

I haven't had a drink in almost 9 months, but my other New Year resolution is to keep all alcohol and tobacco out of my life. There's just not a positive reason for it."

Says someone who doesn't have children. Just you wait...

"I had a busy December, my husband and I got to go to Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo. It was going to be a girls trip, but Jason couldn't stand it and had to join in on the fun! LOL! It was our first time back to the rodeo since he qualified in 2007. It was so nice to get to party and visit with our rodeo family.

Vegas sure kicked our ass! Jason had to drive to Denver for work and I went with him so I could help him drive straight thru. NOT. I went to spend time with my nephews that live in Breckenridge, CO. Short trip but super fun!

The holidays were good I got a MacBook from Jason - FINALLY! He thinks you can do everything from iPhone! I got him some awesome custom made leather items from ML Leddy's, the only problem is some crack head on West 7th thought they needed them more than him! Yes, my car window got busted out and they stole a bunch of stuff including my J. Rae's cookies for my nieces 1 year old birthday party!

New Years is right around the corner and we are headed to Fairfield, TX to bring in the NY with our friends at their ranch. My New Years Resolution is to stay focused with my horses and barrel racing career and make the best out of every opportunity that comes my way! My goal for 2012 is to make the Texas Circuit Finals, so with hard work and a little bit of luck I should see you there:) Don't be afraid to put your dreams out there that way your friends can hold you to it and stand by you!"

Sir Richard Branson, global entrepreneur and founder of Virgin Group, shared his unique business perspective in an interview with Miles O'Brien at "A Conversation With a Living Legend" to a rapt audience of over 700 guests this past Wednesday, January 4 in Dallas at the Hilton Anatole.

There are lots of people who think they are important, but there are very few people who have an energy that takes over when they enter a room. I'm talking about the kind of palatable presence that commands the attention of every person in the room, and you become rapt with attention because you know that whatever this person says, is going to be worth listening to. Oprah has it. Bill Clinton has it. And Sir Richard Branson definitely has it.

I met Sir Richard last Spring when he came to Big D for the launch of Virgin America and I love being around such a unique, adventurous spirit. Branson is a true Renaissance Man: having dropped out of high school at the age of 16, he founded Virgin at age 20 as a mail order record retailer and later expanded it into a record shop and recording studio. Virgin Music became one of the top six record companies in the world.

He got big laughs out of the audience when he recalled how he almost named the music company "Slipped Discs" because he had so much trouble getting the proper English authorities to approve the name "Virgin". And shook his head in wonderment over his good fortune to sell that company some 20 years later for $1 Billion dollars, right before the total collapse of the music industry.

Branson realized his dream of opening the world's first commercial space tourism business with the launch of Virgin Galactic, designed to take passengers to suborbital space. He spoke at length about his focus on space travel and how "in our lifetime" he will be taking 2-3 flights of 6 people a day into space. Two Bloomingdale's Outlets are opening in North Texas this Spring!

When two new Bloomingdale's Outlets open in Dallas and Grand Prairie in 2012, the stores will become the first of their kind in Texas.

The 25,000 sq. ft. Dallas store will open at The Shops at Park Lane in Spring 2012, Bloomingdale's announced yesterday. The Grand Prairie store will be at the Paragon Outlets complex and will open this summer.

Just seven Bloomingdale's Outlets exist so far, and five more are slated to open across the country in 2012, including the two North Texas stores. Popular in New York and California, Bloomingdale's is owned by Macy's. No Bloomingdale's non-outlet stores exist in Texas.

The arrival of Bloomingdale's comes relatively quickly after Swedish retailer H&M made its debut into North Texas, first at NorthPark Center.
