Hello friends! Well, 2020 was one hell of a year wasn't it... and as we move into 2021 I have decided to make some changes to the way I communicate with you all. I started this blog in 2008 when my son was 8 years old. None of my family lives in Dallas, so I thought a blog would be a fun way to share stories of what our family was doing and where we were going to stay connected. It was an unexpected surprise that I also found was a community of people who were also first-time parents, exploring this city, wanting to know more about Dallas and how we were experiencing it.

And thus Oh So Cynthia was born.

A few years later, when my son entered Middle School, he made it quite clear that he was not down with me sharing photos and stories about him on the internet. So, I decided to turn the camera around and instead of having the focus being on my family, decided to spotlight where I went, what I saw, and who I met. And that's really when this thing took off.

In the last few years, I have been doing more and more freelance writing for newspapers and publications, and using their audience as a way to spread my love of Dallas even further. Today, I am the Dallas Editor for Society Texas magazine. Each issue gives readers a dynamic insider’s view of the bold lifestyle and exciting personality of Texas targeting the most influential demographic. Published bi-monthly, each issue of Society Texas is proudly displayed in the most luxurious residences, hotels, spas, and retail points across Texas. In every issue, I share Dallas' hottest events and coolest people with readers throughout the state of Texas and feature three restaurants or bars in the magazine SAVOR feature. I am also a regular Contributor to Dallas Hotel Magazine, the definitive guide for discerning visitors to Big D. And most recently, I have partnered with the Katy Trail Weekly newspaper as their Society Editor to revamp their Scene Around Town feature and shine a spotlight on nonprofits and the volunteers that give back to our city.

Did I mention that all of this is outside of my "real" job as a Partner and Publicist at Gangway Advertising? Google "woman who wears many hats" and you'll see a picture of me. LOL. In a constant attempt to better balance all of the balls I am juggling, I have decided to redirect my attention away from this website. Kips Bay Decorator Show House Stimulates the Imagination

The inaugural Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas opens to the public on Friday, September 25th at 5828 Woodland Drive in Old Preston Hollow’s Historic Woodland Estates neighborhood. The house showcases the creativity and design expertise of twenty-seven of the nation’s most acclaimed interior designers, architects, and artists. Each designer was given approximately seven weeks to transform their assigned space in the home. In-person tickets can be purchased for Friday, September 25th – Sunday, October 25th, 2020, Monday – Sunday: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Cost is $40 and tickets must be purchased online before you enter the Show House. For the next month, design lovers from around the nation, visitors, and locals will have the opportunity to tour the completed Show House. For the first time ever, the Show House will offer a 3D virtual video tour for those who are not able to attend in person. Visits to the house must be booked in advance to ensure proper social distancing and the wearing of face masks is required for all visitors.

The Show House, which is also held annually in New York City and Palm Beach, doubles as the nation’s leading design event of the year and Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club’s top fundraiser. For nearly half a century, top interior designers have come together in raising more than $25 million for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club of New York, which provides young people with educational and developmental programs in the city. For the last 20 years, I have had the pleasure to visit the beautiful city of San Antonio several times a year to visit family, but it wasn't until 3-4 years ago that I discovered La Cantera Resort and Spa. That discovery has been a game-changer and it's now one of my favorite places to visit for a relaxing weekend getaway or holiday vacation.

Overlooking 550 acres of The Texas Hill Country, La Cantera is where sophistication meets relaxation. From the 25,000 sq. ft destination spa, Loma de Vida Spa & Wellness, to two championship golf courses, guests can immerse themselves in the San Antonio scenery. Having stayed at the resort several times, I thought I'd do you a solid and share a few tips and tricks I've learned along the way to give you the BEST experience possible:

The Lounge at SEVEN

No. 1 - La Cantera offers the usual array of hotel rooms and villas but my pick is their adults-only guest room and floor called SEVEN. Upon arrival, your personal concierge will greet you in the drive and escort you to a private tower on the seventh floor, then hand you a complimentary glass of champagne while they check you into the hotel. At this point I'm already feeling extra AF. The spacious rooms offer king-sized beds, elevated bath products and Nespresso machines. SEVEN guests experience never-ending discoveries around every turn including complimentary valet parking, dedicated SEVEN concierge, exclusive access to the SEVEN lounge (complete with free sodas and waters and lots of snacks), complimentary breakfast from 7am-10am daily, and a complimentary Happy Hour from 5pm-7pm daily. I found myself nabbing snacks every time we walked by - just because I could! They were there! Free for the taking! So awesome! This is also where my husband liked to work for a few hours each day to stay caught up with work.

No. 2 - Splurge a bit and rent a cabana. You will thank me. Daytime cabanas are available from 10am-4pm and afternoon cabanas are available from 5pm-9pm daily. 16 poolside cabana rentals are available across three of the resort's five pools. This past visit we spent the better part of the day at TOPAZ, the adults-only pool. Our cabana was the perfect place for my husband to work in the shade with FOX News on (don't judge me) whilst I drank champagne and frolicked in the pool. It 👏 Was 👏 HEAVEN! 👏 Each cabana comfortably fits eight guests and offers a VIP poolside experience. Cabanas feature big-screen TV's, a safe, and fully-stocked refrigerator. The adults-only cabanas also offer Bluetooth sound systems.

No. 3 - Do NOT miss a chance to experience a treatment at Loma de Vida Spa. Open daily from 9a-6p, this secluded sanctuary is immersed in nature and situated on one of the highest points in San Antonio with breathtaking views of the Texas sky. The spa invokes the spirit of the Hill Country and Texas to inspire traditional spa offerings (massages, facials), signature experiences indigenous to the area and results orientated services integrating technology and nature to create a true sense of balanced well-being.

I've had a variety of services here - from facials to massages to nail services - and they are all amazing. My biggest tip is to plan to go early or stay after your service to enjoy what they call "tranquil transitions" which include use of the Saline Vitality Pool and Himalayan Salt Stone Sauna, along with a lovely patio and resting areas in the Solarium. These amenities are offered at no additional charge and will enhance your overall experience!

Irving-based Shoebacca recently donated 400 pairs of shoes, 170 pairs of socks, 150 pairs of men’s underwear and 514 pieces of apparel totaling $50,000 in value to Dallas 24 Hour Club. PlainsCapital Bank Executive Vice President, Joe Pitch, is a Board Member for The 24, recently assisted Shoebacca with some banking services. “They were appreciative of the work I had done and inquired if there was something they could do in return. Custom Sock Designs Help Homeless Children Thrive

DeadSoxy’s founder, Jason Simmons, recently partnered with Vogel Alcove to design a contest in which school-age kids would participate in a project to design a sock and write a story about their design. More than 20 designs were drawn and the top three designs were then digitized by the DeadSoxy team and developed. The efforts of DeadSoxy will help educate a new audience to the mission and services of Vogel Alcove who provides educational, developmental and therapeutic services to children and families affected by homelessness. Using its “Two-Generational” approach to solving homelessness, services are provided to client families through the early childhood education program and Parent Opportunity Department. All of these services are provided for free, in a safe and nurturing school environment, in which the families can learn and grow together. The three winners were:

1. Fox and Sprinkles - “I wanted to be creative and make sprinkles rain from the sky, and I like it because the fox’s name is Sprinkles. Real-life is cool, but kind of boring. On my sock there’s a world where it rains sprinkles. Sprinkles go on cupcakes and cakes, and sprinkles are a treat. I wanted my sock to be a treat.” - Janessa, Age 7

2. Musical Notes - “I just really love music!! That’s all!!” (laughing hysterically) - Julius, Age 12

3. Superhero - “This is a kid superhero, who is actually standing on the ground. But, in his mind, he’s flying in the clouds. In 1935, Vogue told its readers that "pancakes are frankly difficult and not worth eating at all unless they are of paper thinness and succulent tenderness." Obviously, millions of people around the world disagreed with this statement because today, pancakes are still one of our most popular breakfast foods. National Pancake Day is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday (which you might know better as Fat Tuesday), which will be Tues, February 25 this year. Since 1969, The 24 has provided safe, sober transitional living for homeless men and women seeking a brand new life away from drugs and alcohol. Located inside Dallas 24 Hour Club, The Hubcap Cafe not only serves delicious food such as burgers, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast staples all day to the public, but it provides a space for friendship, support, and camaraderie to its residents.

Regulars love the colossal Hubcap Pancakes, which are appropriately named because they are literally as big as a car's hubcap (as evidenced in the photo above). Kim Kardashian's Oscars Dress Has A Dallas Connection

After last week's Oscars, Vogue magazine praised Kim Kardashian West for arriving at Vanity Fair’s annual Oscars party in a piece of fashion history - specifically Alexander McQueen’s famed “Oyster dress” from his spring 2003 collection, one of only two that made it into production. According to Vogue, the look was a Christmas present from Kardashian West’s husband, Kanye West purchased from Rita Watnick of Lily et Cie. What Vogue didn't tell its readers is that the dress has a Dallas connection, because it's first owner was Dallas socialite Angie Barrett. Barrett wore the gown to the Beaux Arts Ball (now The Art Ball) and Cinema Against AIDS at The Cannes Film Festival in 2003. Barrett was thrilled to see her gown don one of the most famous body's on the planet saying in a Facebook post, "An exquisite example of McQueen’s artistry lives on!" You know what they say, "Everything's bigger and better in Texas," including our fashion style.

Celebrating National Inventors Day With Something Corny

The proverb “Necessity is the mother of invention” says a lot about how inventors look at life. Many inventors go their whole life without recognition for their creativity while others are household names. February 11 is National Inventors Day so today, I am giving a nod to two Dallas brothers who helped start America's obsession for fried food. In 1938, brothers Neil and Carl Fletcher were offered a unique opportunity to run a food booth at Fair Park. Both men had spent years marveling at the lack of cuisine offered to the Park patrons and knew they had an opportunity on their hands. According to Neil, there was a local baker on Oak Lawn Ave. who served a dish of hot dogs baked in cornmeal in the shape of an ear of corn, and while it tasted good, the process was time-consuming and complicated.

The brothers tested the recipe and realized that by frying it, not only did it cut time in the cooking process but now it was a mobile food on a stick. The Fletchers began selling their corny dogs for 15 cents apiece at the State Fair of Texas® in 1942, but the response was decidedly restrained. In fact, the brothers had to cut them in half and give away samples before people were willing to try it.

On Friday, January 31st Model Makers Group & Radz D. Photography presented Prospère, the first Art Gala at the first Art Hotel in the Dallas Arts District - the HALL Arts Hotel. Radz D. Photography, together with Model Makers Group, hosted its third fundraising event on January 31, 2020. This year’s theme was inspired by Dallas women and their true stories of thriving beyond life challenges. The event’s art show displayed portrait art featuring works by award-winning photographer, Radz Daswani. Through the lens, she allowed the honored women to share the many emotions that are experienced through their journeys. Honorees for the evening included Ruby Bhandari, Founder of Silk Threads, Inc.; Martha Wolf, Co-Captain of Dallas United Crew Dragonboat Team; Traci Parker, Co-Founder of Lez Talk Dallas. Special guests in attendance were the Honorable Tonya Parker with the 116th Civil District Court; Phuong Tran, Co-President of Young Texans Against Cancer; Melinda Imthurn, Artistic Director for Women's Chorus of Dallas; Susan Posnick, CEO Susan Posnick Cosmetics; Mike Wheless, Wheless Executive Search & Leadership Consulting. When I told my husband I was going to Ann Arbor for a getaway, he stared at me perplexed. “But, you hate the cold,” he sputtered. “And, you don’t even like college sports.” He had a point, but I also have a slight obsession with outerwear and this trip would give me a chance to break some of my favorites out of the closet where they generally live in hibernation. Located in southeast Michigan's Lower Peninsula, Ann Arbor lies at the center of a greater collection of communities in Washtenaw County. Southwest and American Airlines both fly direct to Detroit, and Ann Arbor is a mere 30-minute drive from the airport, making it an easy destination.

Ann Arbor might be best known as home to the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) which boasts a student population of about 45,000. The University was founded in 1817 in Detroit but was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The University’s football stadium is known as “The Big House” and can seat 107,601 fans – making it the second-largest stadium in the Northern Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. While many know of their football prowess, what you might not be aware of is that as of October 2019, 25 Nobel Prize winners, 6 Turing Award winners and 1 Fields Medalist have been affiliated with the University of Michigan making them an academic force to be reckoned with as well. The University is an undeniable presence in Ann Abor, but after spending four days there, what I discovered that it’s far more than just a bustling college town.

With so many thriving communities nearby, Ann Arbor has become a cultural melting pot and urban oasis. What I discovered is that Ann Arbor is many things, including a bustling university town, diverse culinary hotspot, and a tech hub with a walkable downtown that includes world-class arts and culture. With so much to see, do and eat, let’s dive in as I share my top picks (in no particular order) to ensure a fun and fabulous trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

1) Soar, roar and explore at the Museum of Natural History
UMMNH closed in 2017 for a major makeover costing $261 million. They recently reopened a brand-new 312,000 square-foot Biological Sciences Building, one of the largest and most interactive teaching and research facilities of its kind among higher education institutions, so you can now see "old bones in a new home". Upon entering, guests are greeted by the museum’s iconic mastodon couple, will view prehistoric whale skeletons, and can walk through 4 billion years of the history of life on Earth, where you can see and touch real specimens - even a T. rex skull! That’s cool. Some of the museum’s newest features include a 25-foot Quetzalcoatlus pterosaur flying high in the Biological Sciences Building atrium; a high-tech planetarium with a dome theater; and an interactive, multimedia “Tree of Life” display to illustrate the connections among all living things. 2) Dine at Miss Kim’s Korean Restaurant
Chef Ji Hye Kim grew up in Seoul, South Korea and is obsessed with ancient Korean culinary texts and the finer points of fermentation. The food is rooted in Korean tradition and adapted to showcase Michigan’s bountiful produce. Chef Kim works with local farmers to build a menu that shines seasonally. The menu features small, medium and large plates that are meant for sharing. They are a One Fair Wage restaurant, which means that servers are paid fairly and do not rely on tips for their living. 3) Tour Motawi Tileworks
Founded in 1992, Nawal Motawi started making tiles in her garage and selling them at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market next to the rutabaga sellers. More than 30 artisans now make tiles in a 12,900 square foot studio and sell them through 300+ stores spread across the United States. Motawi tiles inspired by works of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and include such subjects as nature, art, and architecture. Some of the artists whose work has been adapted by Motawi include Charley Harper, Dard Hunter, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Most tiles produced by Motawi are either styled in “Relief”, a low-relief sculpture colored with a single glaze, or “Polychrome”, a separation of several colors by a small ridge of clay. Free tours are offered Tuesdays at 1pm and Thursdays at 11am. Tours typically last 60-90 minutes and are best for ages 8 to adult. Reservations are not required. Every Saturday at noon and at 3pm, they offer a free docent-led factory walk-through of the Tileworks. Walk-throughs typically last approximately 20 minutes. Motawi.com

Ranked one of the best streets in America by Fodor’s Travel, Ann Arbor’s Main Street is full of gift spots, unique galleries, and so much more. If you are looking for a souvenir unique to Michigan, stop by Cherry Republic where you’ll find all sorts of cherry-made candies and food products, wine and more. Get in your window-shopping and coffee fix, and make sure you go to one of the locally owned, indie bookstores and giftshops like Crazy Wisdom or Literati, recently named the 2019 Publishers Weekly Bookstore of the Year. Other stores of interest are WSG Gallery, a gallery owned by 16 artists, and a showcase for fine art at affordable prices.

9) Take a selfie
These days, life is all about an Instagrammable moment and Ann Arbor offers several amazing spots guaranteed to have folks back home double-tapping. Cross the street in front of Michigan Theater or State Theater, strike a pose at Graffiti Alley, look studious inside the Law Quad at the University of Michigan, break the glass ceiling (not literally) at Nickels Arcade, a one of a kind shopping corridor with a beautiful glass ceiling, home to unique stores and a great coffee shop, and show your Friends and Followers that ‘Love Is What You Want” at the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

10) Parks & Recreation Abound
Michigan is renowned for being one of the most beautiful places in the United States, so pack a pair of sneakers and plan to get outside! According to the Destination Ann Arbor website, "the natural, scenic areas are vast – full of trails to explore and hike. The area champions its wealth of natural environments, with an incredible and diverse offering of parks, gardens, and outdoor attractions." Both the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum are free to the public - walking the trails, visiting the indoor conservatory, and wandering through one of Matthaei’s 11 outdoor garden spaces should be a part of your “to do” list. The Arboretum is perfect for a scenic stroll along the river or a picnic in the gorgeous Peony Garden. In the summer, paddle down the Huron River Water Trail in a kayak or canoe, mountain bike through the Waterloo State Recreation Area and view the sand hill crane migration. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," also called Shrove Tuesday. It is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the start of Christian Lent season leading up to Easter. During Lent, many Christians fast, and the name Fat Tuesday refers to the last day of eating richer foods before the leaner days of Lent begin. In America, celebrations for Mardi Gras are most famous in New Orleans, where it is the conclusion of weeks of parades that begin in January. You don't have to live in Louisianna to enjoy this festive holiday. Dallas has its own celebrations and below are some of the options to indulge and imbibe. As they say in NoLa, "Laissez les bons temps rouler" - which is Cajun French for "Let the good times roll!" ⚜️

Dallas loves any reason to party. Add dim sum to the equation and we are ready to TURN IT UP! So, it's no surprise that the DFW-area has many celebrations planned throughout the next several weeks to celebrate Chinese New Year. In case you aren't familiar with this holiday, it is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. In 2020, the first day of the Chinese New Year will be on Saturday, 25 January, initiating the Year of the Rat, which celebrates wealth, surplus and the beginning of a new day. Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely, and the evening preceding Chinese New Year's Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include that of good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. For the northern regions of China, dumplings are featured prominently in meals celebrating the festival. It often serves as the first meal of the year either at midnight or as breakfast of the first day.

AWARE president Jolie Humphrey and her husband Bart, along with hosts Stephanie and Bennie Bray, recently welcomed committee members and supporters of the AWARE Affair CELEBRATE THE MOMENTS gala to the Reveal Party, where exciting details about the upcoming 2020 gala were announced. AWARE has been dedicated to fighting Alzheimer’s disease since 1989. They provide funding and support to programs, projects, and research provided by nonprofit organizations that actively help all individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease in Dallas and the greater North Texas area.

The big reveals of the evening were that the 2020 party theme will be UnMask the Myths; Honorary Chairs are Sally and Forrest Hoglund; Gail Plummer is the Amy Osler Spirit of Education Leadership Award honoree; and Barbara Sypult is the Inaugural Founders Award honoree. Haute Hot lingerie celebrated their debut to the marketplace with a sexy celebration at The Joule Hotel on Tuesday, December 3. Haute Hot lingerie offers unique pieces to wear out on a date night or to a party, as well as lingerie that can be contoured to fit a woman’s exact body-type and worn discreetly under clothing. Tony and Tamara Casillas to serve as 2020 Event Chairs for Boots & Blessings

On Tuesday, December 3, Tamara & Tony Casillas opened their home to kick-off the 6th Annual Ally’s Wish Boots & Blessings Gala with a night of sips, shopping and holiday cheer. The team from Vestals Catering passed a delicious menu of appetizers and guests grazed on a beautiful charcuterie table. The Casillas home was beautifully decorated with holiday lights, multiple Christmas trees and 25 family photos taken each year with Santa and their children; a family tradition started by Tamara & Tony when their son was born. Five years ago, four friends founded Ally’s Wish in honor of their dear friend, Allyson Hendrickson whose wish was the first to be granted prior to losing her battle with ovarian cancer in 2014. Hendrickson’s blog, 3 Little Cowboys began as a collection of letters and stories to her three young sons, but it quickly gained a national following spanning seven years. With her friends by her side, she unwrapped her published book, Three Little Cowboys.

Today a portion of the sales from Hendrickson’s book benefits Ally’s Wish. Since its inception, Ally’s Wish has granted over 150 wishes to young mothers who’ve battled inflammatory breast cancer, Leukemia, colon cancer and other terminal illnesses. Ally’s Wish currently has 120 moms waiting to have wishes granted with new requests arriving daily. The average cost to grant a wish is around $5K, and funds raised at the annual Boots & Blessings event are the main fundraiser for the organization.

“We are so thankful for our friend Allyson, and though her time on earth was short, her legacy will last a lifetime,” said founder and president Missy Phipps. “We are incredibly appreciative for the outpouring of support we’ve received from the community, and we know our 2020 Boots & Blessings party will be unforgettable, just like Allyson.”

The evening was filled with tributes to Hendrickson. The team from Kendra Scott brought their latest jewelry collection, including a special custom piece created by Founder Missy Phipps and Danielle Cornett in honor of Hendrickson. Guests were able to shop from the latest styles, just in time for the holidays, and a portion of sales benefitted Ally’s Wish. Hendrickson had loved candy sprinkles, so Sprinkles cupcakes donated branded cupcakes which were a hit, including their famous “SPRINKLES” cupcake which was front and center in remembrance.

Phipps recognized LeeAnne Locken-Emberlin and Rich Emberlin who will serve as Honorary Chairs for the 2020 party. Longtime supporters, LeeAnne served as the emcee for the 2nd annual gala and is thrilled to return in this official capacity. Phipps then announced Tony and Tamara Casillas as the 2020 Event Chairs. Tamara shared that in celebration of her 5 year anniversary of breast cancer she wanted to do something that honored this celebration of remission because she is one of the lucky ones but there are moms and their families who are not so lucky to be alive. By the end of her remarks, there was not a dry eye in the house! She thanked her friend, Danielle Cornett, for introducing her to the Ally’s Wish organization and for getting her involved. Tamara & Tony both support so many organizations but Ally’s Wish touched both of their hearts and they feel connected to the story and the mission.

This year’s Zoo To Do fundraiser, presented by The Eugene McDermott Foundation was without a doubt the most Instagrammable party of the year. In addition to being greeted by Dawn and Steve Moore, this year’s Event Chairs, the 700 guests who came through the front gates of the Dallas Zoo on Saturday, November 2, were welcomed by animal ambassadors including flamingos, an anteater and penguins as a reminder of why Zoo To Do is so important. Proceeds from the event help support the Dallas Zoo’s dedication to providing the best animal care, deliver unique education offerings, and strengthen its wildlife conservation efforts. Honorary Chef Chair Dan Landsberg of Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa, along with Chef Wrangler Brett Krafft from the Hilton Lincoln Centre joined guests at the award-winning Giants of the Savanna exhibit for a strolling dinner among the 30 restaurant stations representing the finest restaurants in Dallas. How often can one say they had lions, elephants, African painted dogs and cheetahs as dinner companions!?

At each station, executive chefs served delicious gourmet treats of appetizers, entrée specialties and desserts. Bars scattered throughout the exhibit provided fine wines and craft cocktails. Perot Museum of Nature and Science's Annual Night At The Museum: Ignite Gala Set the Night Ablaze

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science’s Night at the Museum: Ignite illuminated Dallas on Nov. 9 for a gala unlike any other. According to a release, more than 1,000 guests attended, including Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Dallas City Councilmember David Blewett, Texas Instruments officials Peter Balyta and Terri West, and philanthropist Sally Hoglund – all on hand to help dedicate the newly reimagined Texas Instruments Engineering and Innovation Hall days before its Nov. 12 public opening. “Thanks to our incredible supporters, this year’s Night at the Museum overflowed with opportunities for exploration on every level, igniting imagination and sparking the curiosity of our guests,” said Dr. Linda Silver, the Eugene McDermott Chief Executive Officer of the Perot Museum. “As our biggest fundraiser, this evening supports the Perot Museum’s mission to inspire minds through nature and science, allowing us to successfully lead the charge for STEM education in North Texas.”

Event chairs were Marlene and John Sughrue, and the honorary chair was Mary McDermott Cook. The VIP pre-party for Geode sponsors (at the $12,500 level and above) began at 6 p.m., followed by the main party at 7 p.m. The after-party ran from 9 p.m.-midnight. Upon arrival, guests were welcomed by color-changing illuminated arches projecting simulated fire, lasers, fire eaters, a neon-lit champagne wall and a blue glitter carpet. The Museum’s five floors teemed with delectable, science-inspired inspired cuisine from Wolfgang Puck Catering (from flaming cocktails to blueprint food stations), and other mind-igniting activities. As guests were transported up the famed “T. rex-calator” to Level 4, they were greeted with “Mechanical Minded” experiences, cocktails from a moving bolt bar with Asian-inspired small plates served on a conveyer belt, a “space henge” 360-degree photo booth, and the famous “shouting paleontologist.” On Level 3, “A Flash of Inspiration” mixed the visual awe of combustion and heat with mid-century modern pizzazz complete with a crepe station, “ignite” hair bar glitter station, neuron-fired photo-ops and futuristic body-art station.

With a “Constructing the Idea” theme, Level 2 took a more modern approach with its roaming robot photo booth, a Rube-Goldberg dessert station, food-aeration station, dry-ice test-tube cocktails and programmable LEGO® robots. Also on Level 2, partygoers got a sneak peek of the newly reimagined Texas Instruments Engineering and Innovation Hall. The Hall boasts a massive LED music code sequencer, ChallENGe Lab, three robotic tables, “Awesome Airways” wind-tunnel activity, “North Texas Innovator Timeline,” interactive mechanical art sculpture and more. The Hall was funded by a $1.3 million gift from the Texas Instruments Foundation, and the ChallENGe Lab was supported by The Hoglund Foundation. Decked out with gears, cogs and peculiar mechanics, the steampunk-style VIP pre-party on the Lower Level featured an Inventor’s Workshop complete with brassy late-19th century décor and colors. Revelers delighted in the “da Vinci” Negroni ice-sphere cocktails encased in ice and served with a small hammer, a flambéed steak station, and sip-on-a-spoon cocktails topped with gold flakes. A Tilt Brush by Google virtual reality station and festive photo ops completed the scenario.

The Museum’s world-exclusive exhibition, Origins: Fossils from the Cradle of Humankind, greeted curious guests on the Lower Level. The exhibition, which is open through March 22, 2020, showcases fossils of two ancient human relatives – Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi – marking the first time that human relative fossils of two different species have ever been displayed together outside of Africa. To round out the night, a blazing after party featuring the Georgia Bridgwater Orchestra brought down the house from 9 p.m.-midnight. Late-night refreshments included chicken schnitzel, wagyu beef burgers and adult milkshakes. Proceeds supported the Museum’s mission to inspire minds through nature and science to fund educational programming, student scholarships, Museum operations, traveling exhibitions and groundbreaking research. Fashion Group International of Dallas, most commonly known as just FGI Dallas, will present its annual Night of Stars Gala on Friday, November 15th. A portion of proceeds from the evening will benefit the Fashion Group Foundation of Dallas, which provides scholarships to fashion students in Texas and surrounding states. This year's star attraction will be the legendary fashion designer, Bob Mackie, who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mackie is an internationally renowned costume and fashion designer who has dressed some of the most glamorous entertainment icons in the world including Cher, RuPaul, Liza Minelli, Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Tina Turner, Elton John to name a few. Just a very few... With a career spanning five decades, nine Emmy Award wins, three Academy Award nominations, and an induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame, Bob Mackie's career is nothing short of legendary. Most recently, he received a 2019 Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award for his work on The Cher Show.

Clearly, Mackie is no stranger to receiving accolades, so I reached out to ask him what receiving this particular award, from FGI Dallas meant to him. "I have many wonderful Dallas memories, but probably my most special one was on my very first trip to present our first, ever Dallas fashion show, followed by the unpredictable trunk show," said Mackie. "The young man whose family owned the store we were appearing in was worried that I might not approve of one of the models. 'She’s very different,' he said, 'She might be too extreme or too exotic. She’s not the usual Dallas girl. If you want to change to another girl, it would be ok.' Moments later I was introduced to the fashion goddess of my life. From that day on, I never did an important fashion event without the amazingly gorgeous Jan Strimple!"

Mackie went on to opine, "The women of Dallas truly understand the power and glory of 'dressing up'. They love color, style and opulence and all the good things associated with 'dressing up'. God Bless Them All! It just occurred to me that this is my first trip to Dallas in almost 20 years, so I am looking forward to all of the old and latest 'Must Visits'." And we are looking forward to showing Mackie how Dallas fashion has evolved!

This year’s event will take place at the Adolphus at 6:30 p.m. with Cameron Silver, Fashion Director of the Halston Brand serving as emcee.
