Paloma Faith (Paloma Faith Bloomfield) is an English singer, currently being named the new (or newer, I'm sure Adele was the new one) Amy Winehouse.

Paloma (as you may know if you caught her appearance on the first episode of the new 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' series) is delightfully, with perfectly refined and unique personal style and a perfectly unrefined Hackney (London) accent. Supporting her oddities are a few facts from her official website:

She began singing in cabaret and burlesque clubs.
Paloma once appeared as a live ghost on a ghost train ride at the funfair.
When she was a magician’s assistant she would be sawed in half onstage.
She once worked as an assistant in Agent Provocateur.

In addition to those weird and wonderful previous jobs, Paloma is also an actress - she played Andrea the Emo in the recent 'St Trinians' film and appears in the upcoming film 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'.

Paloma is currently focusing on her music career, and doing pretty well; the release of her debut single, Stone Cold Sober, apparently had to be brought forward due to lots of radio airplay. He music is a mix of that big band, jazzy, swing-like sound that probably owes the Amy Winehouse comparisons but everything else - voice, style, humour and optimism - is very much Paloma.

Paloma's new single 'New York' and debut album 'Do You Want The Truth, Or Something Beautiful' are both out now.

RIP Stephen Gately

I was terribly sad to wake up to the news that Boyzone member, Stephen Gately, passed away yesterday at the age of 33. Stephen was not only my favourite Boyzone member as he was talented and seemed a genuinely lovely guy, but he was also one of my very first crushes when I was 7 years old. 'No Matter What" was (and still is) my favourite Boyzone song, and feautured Stephen's vocals beautifully.

My thoughts go out to his partner, family and friends. RIP Stephen.

I recently unsubscribed to a lot of women's style podcasts because I found them boring - "This is what's in style, this is how you should wear it, next week we'll tell you what else is in style and how you should wear it". - One of the very few I didn't unsubscribe to was 'In the Closet' (also presented by Executive Editor Tyler Thoreson), other than the fact that I have a rather large crush on Josh, this was because they look like they have fun when they're talking about the clothes they like or what's in style - they make jokes, they laugh, they have a drink and say things like 'awesomeness' and 'dude'. Surely that's what fashion is about, having fun and expressing yourself.

An Open Letter to Madonna

Dear Madonna,

Today I watched your new video for 'Celebration' and it troubled me. I'm not one of those people who thinks that when a person gets to a certain age they should stop wearing certain clothes just because society says so, if you feel comfortable and look good then why not? I am, however, one of those people who thinks out of dignity one should shut their legs and stop waving their groin every-which-way in music videos - as a woman of a certain age, you should know better. We know, you like to court controversy, you like to push boundaries and you like to be different, but at this point your attempts reek of desperation and just lump you with all the other female pop stars that prance around in their underwear. This is not the confident, intelligent, headstrong and progressive woman we knew from previous years, what happened to her? Please take note from your previous videos that we don't need to see a person's crotch to consider them sexy (or in the majority of cases we don't need to see one's crotch at all).

Even in your 'Sex' book you didn't come across as so distastefully (and tackily) over sexed as you have in your most recent videos - you've become so trite. What happened to Madonna with something to say, a message - the Madonna who had powerful, political lyrics/videos (I don't want this one who hangs herself on crosses in her underwear, and says things along the lines of 'Stop being mean to people. Its not nice', on stage). Also, as a final thought, is that auto-tune I hear? Myself and your previous incarnations hang our heads in shame.

The 'Me' Issue

Beauty isn't black or white, fat or thin - there's all the different shades and sizes in between.

That's the issue I have with fashion magazines - they release tokenistic editions, take for an example, Vogue Italia's (two) 'Black Issues' and then carry on the way they had before. Is that an attempt at highlighting an issue or simply using gimmicky marketing tactics to sell magazines? And what about all the other ethnicities that are misrepresented? How about scrapping the whole 'Black Issue' idea and just use different ethnicities in the magazine on a consistent basis. Or consider the many issues of most women magazines which release a 'Body Confidence' issue on a yearly basis. The magazines recognise the range of individualities within the readers, and yet only address it in a yearly gimmick issue.

You may be wondering why I used the above picture for this post, but looking at the pictures of Amber Rose was quite possibly the first time I looked at a magazine editorial and felt comfortable about my body - her boobs aren't seemingly molded onto her collarbone and she has chunky thighs like me! My final thought was actually 'My body isn't actually as bad as I think it is'. The irony is that the images are featured in a men's magazine!

I know a lot of women won't be able to relate to Amber Rose - not everyone looks like her, or Sasha Pivoravova, or Jourdan Dunn or Gisele Bundchen (and the list goes on). But that's the point, nobody does except them. If magazines featured a wider range of women perhaps we'd stop thinking what we are isn't good enough or 'not right' and realise technically speaking no specific way of looking is the 'right way', surely it's the fact that we're all different that makes it 'right'.

It you didn't know Director John Hughes passed away last week (Thursday, 6th August), and although I wasn't a teen in the 80's I can certainly appreciate his films. It's no secret that Home Alone 1&2 have probably been two of my favourite films since the age of about 5, Beethoven wiled away many a boring rainy holiday day (and made me want a St Bernard) and Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles helped me through my teen years. So it truly is a sad loss, but I'm sure he will live on through his films which had so much over teen life (past, present and future).

Classic Goldie

Did anybody watch 'Classic Goldie' on BBC Two on Friday? For those of you who didn't or aren't sure of who Goldie even is - let me catch you up.

Goldie is an English electronic musician specializing in, and pioneering, Drum & Base and Jungle music. 'Classic Goldie' follows on from the BBC conductor contest/reality show 'Maestro'. In 'Classic Goldie' Goldie is approached by the director of the Proms to compose an original piece of music to be performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in the 2009 Proms season.

The biggest challenge is that Goldie can't read or write music and mainly produces his music on the basis of how it looks on a computer screen - synthesized sounds and electronic sampling - basically like sound waves.

It's an interesting watch - seeing how he 'draws' and hums the music and watching how it all comes together. You can tell he has a huge appreciation for it all. The first episode is available on BBC IPlayer until Friday and the second episode airs on Friday 7th, 9pm on BBC Two.

The Young Victoria

Love Rules All

I think the impression that everyone has of Queen Victoria (or at least the impression I had) is based on the much publicised saying 'We are not amused' and her famous portrait where she looks pretty grumpy, because of this you'd be excused for thinking Queen Victoria was a bit boring and just a tad moody, this film however suggests otherwise (although I'm not sure of the historical accuracy, so she might of been a moody cow!)

As the title suggests, this film focuses on Queen Victoria's (played by Emily Blunt) earlier years, more specifically focusing on the year building up to her coronation and the beginning of her reign, during which time she began her friendship and later marriage with Prince Albert (Rupert Friend). I have spent many weeks since watching the film trying to condense the story behind Victoria's coming to power and her early reign into a short paragraph, but it's unsurprisingly difficult - she is our longest reigning monarch after all. Nevertheless, let's see if I can explain the whole political side as far as I understand/remember (with help from Queen Victoria for kids). Victoria was the only child of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent (who died 8 months after her birth) and Princess Victoria Mary Louisa of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (Miranda Richardson). Prince Edward's brother was King William IV of England (Jim Broadbent), whereas Princess Mary Louisa's brother was King Leopold I of Belgium (Thomas Kretschmann). The film begins not long before Victoria's coronation at 18 and portrays the strained relationship with her mother, who was under the influence of her consort Sir John Conroy (Mark Strong), her budding relationship with Prince Albert (under her uncle Leopold's influence), in addition to her close friendship with The Whig Prime Minister Lord Melbourne (Paul Bettany).

Despite the obvious historical context, the film is mainly a love story between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and a beautiful (true) one at that. It's refreshing to see that amongst what appeared to be a lot of arranged/forced marriages at the time there is a story of two people simply falling in love with each other; Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend do an amazing job at making you believe you're watching that story unfold on screen. Although, for history buffs you see the Queen moving into the newly built Buckingham Palace, the Bedchamber Crisis, assassination attempts and the development of concepts which we take for granted now, like terraced housing.

I believe this is Emily's first leading role and she does an amazing job at making a monarch, who had previously been considered a little gloomy, seem fun and extremely likeable. On a sort of related point, I find it quite it quite interesting to see that in and amongst all the female geared films (or 'chick-flicks' if you must, although I hate that term) the one's which feature the most strong, independent females seem to be the period films, as opposed to all the modern day films featuring women shopping and having their lives ended/rebuilt by the presence of a romantic lead. With 'The Young Victoria' you get the feeling that Prince Albert merely complemented her personality and monarchy rather than constructed it.

'The Young Victoria' is out now on DVD. I would definitely recommend it if you are a lover of period drama's (for once without Keira Knightley in!) or just want to see an honest and refreshingly modern love story.

... The Olsen Twins.

Separately, they're better known as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, 23 year old twin actresses, designers and business moguls. Possibly best known for their role in the American Sitcom 'Full House', they became a house-hold name when they branched out into straight-to-video films and 'pre-teen merchandise' like dolls, fragrances, clothes and books. In recent years the twins have become more focused on the fashion side of their business, whilst also defining their own individuality and personal styles. They have also recently launched clothing lines The Row and Elizabeth & James.

1. They pretty much wear (massive) heels on a daily basis. I tried wearing heels for one day and the next day my feet were so sore that I couldn't even wear shoes! So either these girls feel no pain or they hide it well!

2. They're short - MK is 5" and Ashley is 5"1 - they're so short it makes me and my 5"3 height feel tall. It's not a dig either I like being short and I like seeing short people wearing amazing clothes you wouldn't expect to look amazing on them like floor length gowns and maxi dresses, even some mini-skirts look long on me. It's just reassuring to know that I can get away with wearing a lot more things with my height than I think I can.

3. They're twins. I know this is an obvious statement, but I was always envious of twins and pretended to have a twin sister when I was younger. I just think it would be amazing to have a ready made best friend, with the same shoe size and who you can share secrets and clothes with (Obviously we'd be the best friend type twins and not the controlling/submissive type twins like the ones on Skins).

4. They probably have the most amazing collective wardrobe between them - ranging from designer, high-street and vintage. Ashley's style is very classic with a bit of an edge, whereas Mary-Kate's is a bit hippy/hipstery. The girls have previously mentioned that they share their clothes but they both manage to keep their own defined, individual style.

5. Despite all the glamorous parties and friends, they still seem quite normal, or as normal as they can be. They've pretty much led their lives in the spotlight since they were a few months old, yet despite the odd gossip rag rumour they still manage to keep their personal life private and continue to forge a more business careers together and individually - with Ashley taking more focus with the fashion lines and Mary-Kate continuing with her acting.

Has anyone noticed the new Fiat 500's? One of my neighbours has an ice blue one and it's absolutely gorgeous! It has definitely been added to the list of my dream cars alongside the Aston Martin DB9.

Well, on Monday night Fiat launched the soft top version of the 500 C in London, very appropriately timed in this heatwave we seem to be having too! The event, hosted by journalist and Fashionista Yasmin Mills, was in aid of the Downs Syndrome Association at Zuma in Knightsbridge. Other guests included guests included singer Mica Paris, Anastasia Webster, model Lisa B, interior designer Kelly Hoppen and model Jasmine Guinness.

(The ladies at the event. I love Jasmine Guinness' dress - from a previous Oli collection, I believe. Mica Paris' daughter is looking gorgeous too!)

Guests then continued on to Whiskey Mist in London's Park Lane where they were joined by the Black Eyed Peas, Trinny Woodhall, Amelle from the Sugababes and were serenaded by Florence and the Machine.

(Update)

Model Elle Macpherson was the first to receive the new Fiat, in what I like to call 'Postman Pat Red'. Surely she's too tall for that car, perhaps she should pass it on to me, being 5"3 I'd fit perfectly.

I've been watching Ally McBeal all week and everyone on that show seems to have a 'theme song', if I had a theme song this would be it - I can't count the amount of times I've strutted around my bedroom getting ready this song.

I have a bajillion memories linked to MJ through my life (I don't know anyone in my family who isn't a big MJ fan) - there's the 'Moonwalker' video that my brother would insist we watched, the time me and my friend listened to 'Black or White' so many times to try and learn the rap, the time I watched the History DVD at my uncle's whilst he went out and I hid behind the setee when Thriller came on, the time a boy sang 'You Rock My World' to me, when on a quiet day at work we put on MJ and tried to moonwalk across the shop floor, the time my brother found a curly wig and a trilby and ran around the house pretending to be him, my mum singing along to the 'Dangerous' album on the way to school. And so many more ...

I'm not typically majorly into Beyoncé songs, but her most recent album 'I Am Sasha Fierce' - despite it's annoying title - has produced some pretty big tunes (Single Ladies, Halo etc). She's really toned down her sound, it's a lot more classy and simple and her videos are really reflecting her new sound (was it just me or had the always been a bit ott, sometimes tacky?).

Hello stranger. Haha. I haven't been here for a while (properly anyway) and here I am starting a whole other series of posts, brave stuff. I think it sort of explains itself really, so lets get to it. Starting with Mr Mike Skinner aka The Streets.

Reasons Why I Love Mike Skinner

Mike Skinner (commonly known by his stage name of 'The Streets') is a 30 year old musician who was born in North London and brought up in Birmingham, the former location owing to the London 'twang' in his voice. Mike is currently working on his fifth album of which you can follow the progress on his Twitter account. Right, so with the formalities out of the way let me tell you why I love him.

1. I'm cheap. Like a lot of people these days, I don't buy albums. This is mostly due to the fear that I'll put it on for a listen and find that the only decent tracks are the singles. So if I've bought an album it's likely I've listened to the 30 second previews on Itunes a million times to make sure it's worth buying. With The Streets, however I can buy an album and feel pretty confident that I'm going to like (almost) every single track (the only other artists I can probably say that about are Adele and Lauryn Hill, and they've each only released one album) - in fact I think I have every single track from 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' and 'Original Pirate Material' on my Ipod.

2. His insightful tweets make me giggle. Including his obsession with the Dyson Airblade and Cadbury's Miniature Heroes. Examples include:

"Loving the weather. The chocolate middle bit of the feast has definatly got smaller"
"As i get bigger every year, Toys r us seems to get smaller"
"Easter egg foil is really cool. When do you ever see purple foil at any other time of the year? why is that?"
"The dyson airblade is a baddass way to dry your hands. I want one in my house"
"do they have dyson airblades in girls toilets too? I always imagine the stuff in girls toilets is better and cleaner"
"I want someone to twitter a photo of the dyson airblades in the toilets at fabric"
"I just realised Cadburys have stopped putting mini crunchies into heroes. That is fucking out of order"

3. His videos are really quite clever. It sort of ties with my love of films where not much happens, but a lot happens at the same time. Well that's what his videos are like - typically him walking around doing things, expressing emotions and talking at the camera. That sort of thing, but it really works because it's like he's telling you a story through the video.

4. Around the time 'Original Pirate Material' was first released Mike was on the cover of a music magazine (can't remember which one) and it sparked a conversation with me and my two best friends, during which I very boldly stated that:

"I'm either going to marry Mike Skinner or love everything he ever releases"

So far it's been the latter however, if you're reading Mike, I'm still single, just in case

5. His lyrics are equally, possibly more, insightful as his Tweets. The songs he writes have, noticeably, evolved from his first album to his most recent songs. Although, all are an interesting mix of his own point of view, funny anecdotes, politics and little of life philosophy. He also writes a decent love song without being too sickly sweet. (see: The Escapist, The Irony Of It All and Everything Is Borrowed.)

Honestly I could think of more, but I can't just tell you to love something you have to experience it (plus it's a Bank Holiday), so off you go - listen to some 'Streets', then come back and try and tell me you don't love him too.

Bonne Belle Lip Smackers Lip Balm
I used this when I was younger and going through the lip gloss discovery phase. The only reason I stopped was because a girl in my glass said they weren’t proper lip gloss and for children - she shamed me into stopping using it. I have now, thankfully, rediscovered Lip Smackers and they are amazing. Mine taste like Skittles, I honestly don’t know how they could be more perfect.

Finding Someone With a Similar Sense of Humour
I have an odd sense of humour. It’s an interesting mix of clever wit/satire (Stephen Fry, Simon Amstell Mock The Week, etc), sarcasm (Jack Dee, again Simon Amstell, etc), clumsiness/stupidity (Lee Evans) and immature grossness (Any Judd Apatow film and Family Guy). Thus finding someone with a similar sense of humour is like finding a Leprechaun’s gold at the bottom of a rainbow - magic. I did find that person and although they aren’t around anymore I’m happy that all the memories I have make me smile, or even giggle. Finding someone you really relate to is something to cherish.

Baby Naming Books/Websites
I know, I know it’s a little weird, but I honestly love baby name books. I love the idea of having something this important which, let’s face it, you kind of own and get to give a name which they have to keep forever (or until they’re 16 years old, or decide to become famous). I find it to be such an amazing thing that I cry a secret tear when I hear someone named their child something boring. Maybe that’s why I get so excited about celebrity baby news, I don’t care about the whole pregnancy business I honestly wish I didn’t have to see all that, but creative people give their children creative names. Because of that fact we have creative baby names (which I love) like Pilot Inspektor, Audio Science, Apple and, my favourite ever, Moxie Crimefighter (if that was my name, well, my goodness me the things I’d be!). All I’m doing is giving this important thing a lot thought, I’m not going to go getting a baby any time soon to name (if anything this satisfies any kind of motherly urge that I don’t have), plus it’s fun.

Current Music: I've been dancing around my room to old school Hip-Hop.
Current Taste: It's slightly metallic I cut my mouth on a Skittle earlier.
Current Hair: I have that weird top of head pony tail which Britney pioneered.
Current Annoyance: It's irritatingly 'high-school' but... I like a boy and I think he likes me, but I don't know for sure and I 'd like to know for sure and Id just like to speed the process along a bit.
Current Smell: White Linen Oust (smells like clothes just come out of the tumble dryer) and mint Aero.
Current thing I should be Doing: Nothing in particular really.
Current Favourite band/artist: I'm educating myself in Patrick Wolf and The Velvet Underground.
Current windows open: Blogger, Itunes and Pages.
Current Desktop Picture: It's a montage dooly of sleepy images.
Current TV Show: Masterchef!!! Also, I'm learning to love the new Skins cast helped by the gorgeously bovver boy-esque Cook.
Current Book: Two Caravans by Marina Lewycka
Current Movie In DVD player: I have two DVD player that don't work, in my room. Knokced Up is in my computer.

‘It’ being my ‘side project’, or so it shall be called until I can find a better name for ‘it’. I find it highly amusing that I have possibly zero time to post on here, and yet I am creating a whole other blog, on a completely different host site, no less. But I think tumblr is probably the best place to post things, without making up a reason to post them - sometimes it’s ‘just because’.

They will be the things that make me smile.

This is the beginning of it.
