"Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na" Benefit Concert at The Big Dome

In light of this recent tragedy that hit our nation,

the ARANETA GROUP joins in the nationwide effort

to offer a helping hand to those who have been affected.

In partnership with ABS-CBN, a benefit concert for Yolanda victims

will be held on November 16 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Dubbed as “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na”,

Kapamilya stars are expected to perform at the event.

All proceeds of the show will go to

the calamity fund of ABS-CBN Foundation's Sagip Kapamilya.

Ticket prices as follows:

Patron - P1000, Lower Box - P700, Upper Box A - P500, Upper Box B - P400, GA - P300

Gates open at 6PM. Concert starts at 8PM.

SHARE A GK DISCO: "Disco"

I've heard a lot about Gawad Kalinga for years now but never had a chance to participate in one until recently. This year, our GK project is nearing to completion. Almost 200 families of displaced calamity victims will have homes. We witnessed the change in their faces from despair to hope. Ohh, I have no words to describe it.

This coming October marks the 10th year of Gawad Kalinga. So many lives have been touched and changed of this initiative that started with a burden to improve the well-being of poor communities. This year, GK will celebrate its anniversary by sharing with the rest of the world the stories that have helped define the work of the foundation. From the words of Jose Luis Oquinena, Executive Director of Gawad Kalinga, "for us who are already involved, these stories serve as inspiration to stay the course, but for the poor, these fulfill a promise made when we first started: Walang iwanan!"

One such story of this promise concretized is that of Mang Disco's, who found hope when he finally had a home address after many years of living in a cemetery.

Fifth Season Spa

I was invited by Ms Leah Dy, co-owner of Fifth Season Spa, to try their newly opened salon in Astoria Plaza, Ortigas. Aside from providing spa solutions, Leah is also the brain (and beauty) behind Fruits In Bloom gift shop, which I am really fond of. I finally personally met her during the Nestle Acti-V event last month where I was able to try their mobile spa. I had a good experience during that event, that I couldn't miss this chance to get a full body massage from them.

Fifth Season Spa is designed as a mini oasis in the middle of a bustling city. To be honest, coming from a neighboring business district, it was quite a trip going there due to traffic. Ortigas peeps are so lucky! The Fifth Season Spa offers a full range of spa services from body massages, facial care, body care, foot and nail care for all genders.

Upon entering the spa I was greeted by a friendly staff and met Leah for a quick tour and orientation before my session. Good thing nobody was there at that time, I was able to see all the rooms which are differently painted according to each season. She ushered me to the hand ritual area, where they let me experience the Hand Ritual - a hand wash using cold water and aroma salt of my choice. Leah explained that before they start any treatment, all the guests are invited to do the hand ritual that initiates the relaxation process.

The rational behind the name.

Fifth Season Spa offers 5 distinct rooms: Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Fifth Season, painted in rich colors depicting each season to compliment the mood and spa treatments they offer. According to Leah, the room interior is more of for diversity. Something to keep the guests excited every visit. A new experience perhaps on every visit.

I personally like the Spring Room for its fresh cool palette, but for this session I needed something homey and warm like the Autumn Room. Although, I'm not sure why I ended up w/ Summer. I think it's because of the red tulip/ poppy on the wall that made the tiny space a happy place for me.

The Winter Room is designed in blue hues imparting a calming and cooling effect.

The Autumn Room is done in shades of pale tones with touches of color marking the transition from summer to winter.

The most colorful room is the Summer Room as it stimulates and energizes.

The Spring Room, is fresh in colors of yellow and green, aptly themed for rejuvenation and renewal.

The premium room - Fifth Season, is designed especially for couples. This room includes a tub and vanity counter for its guests.

My trial visit entails the Traditional Hilot and Appetizer Facial Treatment.

Before the massage, I took a quick shower to acclimatize my body and loosen up my muscles. I appreciate that each room has a shower for privacy and comfort. After I prepared myself for the massage, I rang the bell to call my therapist. Yup, that's what the bell is for! Ang cute noh?

The Hilot Massage is a 90-minute Filipino traditional massage using coconut oil. It is a deep tissue massage that corrects imbalances in the body. . Unlike my usual experience with other spas, which starts on the feet working its way up, my therapist started on my back. I couldn't contain my laugh when my therapist commented - Ma'am, stressed po (kayo)? Parang ang bigat ng daladala nyo - while working on my shoulders. Hahaha ay, sinabi mo ate. She then applied heated banana leaves to further loosen my back muscles, which is a new experience for me. Ganon pala yun. Para matunaw ang mga lamig-lamig, as we normally say. The massage ended with some stretching, which I personally prefer to wake up my sleepy, I meant, "relaxed" muscles.

After the massage, I had the Appetizer Facial - a 45-minute deep cleansing facial treatment for all skin types. I was worried at first since I have super super dry and sensitive skin. I honestly almost backed out. Good thing I didn't. The facial was OHH-MY-G glorious! I haven't done any facial treatment for years so it was really quite an experience. My therapist cleansed my face with cotton and toner, then applied the facial scrub gently on my face in small circular motion avoiding the eyes. Then she rinsed it off with cotton and water, and applied the moisturizer in the same soft circular massage. She finished off with a dry pat of tissue to remove the excess oil. Imagine, all 3 steps in 45 minutes?! Ohh my, I haven't done that to my face ever... lagi kasing nagmamadali. Super pampered talaga face ko.

All Fifth Season Spa Face Therapy uses Swiss brand Pevonia Botanica products. I noticed that the products have no scent, which is a good thing for me - no unnecessary chemical additive. It did not give me a sting/itch after. Best of all, the next day I noticed my blackheads seem to pop ready for extraction. Hahaha.

And ohh, that's not my face below but it will give you an idea what they did to me.

After my session, I was given a complimentary Bayani Brew drink from Gawad Kalinga which is part of Fifth Season Spa's advocacy. All guests are given a complimentary drink which may also be one of the reasons you would want to come back. It's surprisingly good!

( UPDATE ) The royal baby is named as Prince George Alexander Louis. He will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. A very fitting name for the future king.

While I do share Senator Miriam's sentiments on who should get the limelight on SONA, part of the reason why I watch it is to see how our officials & their family wore our Filipiniana.

The new wing of Edsa Shangri-La Plaza is fast becoming popular food joint with its selection of new food concepts and restaurants.

The Strip: Hollywood Steakhouse is one of the first restaurants in the new wing. The interior is very nice and projecting a fine dining atmosphere. My officemates and I went mall hoping early June and on our way back to the office, we decided to check out this restaurant. The place was nearly empty when we came in but the lunch crowd started to build up after about half an hour past 12.

We were served with complimentary bread and seasoned butter while waiting for our order. Our server was very gracious and smart. And up until this point, I have high expectations with The Strips to deliver.

To add with the excitement in our food trip, it was also my first time to "strip", disclose about my blog to my officemates - who are actually some the bosses in the office. And since the secret is out, di na ako na-shy to take pictures of our food kahit na nakatakong or suit pa kami! Some of them gave a small laugh while I was doing it pero umamin din na ganon din daw mga anak nila. So I guess being the youngest (so far) in our team has its perks. Lol. They even encouraged me with it and allowed me to snap a photo of their food before they dig in. Wait, wait, wait - pipicturan pa yan. Looking back, I should have told them about the blog long time ago since we are constantly out for a food-experience/ food-meeting naman. But I guess, I wasn't ready then.

Anyway, the salad I ordered was surprisingly good. Golly, I forgot the names already so just bare with me and savor the photos instead. It has a sweet and tangy dressing with candied walnut and apricot. The chicken strips on the other hand was served hot, which felt odd with the cold mesclun. I prefer cold salads through and through even the plate like Cyma.

Since we came the week after Father's day (now the details of that day is starting to come back), most of the specialties are not available. We just contended ourselves with what's left. Shrimp salad with vinaigrette. Beef strip. Pan fried fish with bacon wrapped asparagus. Shrimp Ratatouille. Gourmet burger with fries. Not bad actually, though it was a bit frustrating not getting your first or second choices.

The presentation was excellent but for some reason the kitchen was very slow that day. And they even messed up with some of our orders. The fish was too salty when we specifically mentioned no salt. The fries was served cold. They also forgot the other order of burger even when we followed it up more than twice. So to be honest, the taste and over all experience was really disappointing.

Ohh well. Good thing I was with good company.

We laughed our frustration out, but they made sure I write about it. Hahaha, may ganon?

So I guess, a more fitting title for this post would be Stripped At The Strip, don't you think?

How to Care for Cut Flowers

Ohh, I'm delighted to see my cut orchids in the office are still looking fresh and beautiful for a week now. I have another pot of cut orchids at home which looks as radiant as this. According to our resident florist, yeah we have one in the office, cut orchids can last up to 3 weeks if properly cared for.

For any type, here's a quick & simple guide to care for cut flowers.

Preparation:

Choose an appropriate clean vase and fill it with fresh, room temperature water.
Add a drop or 2 of disinfectant to the water, depending on the pot size. (I use basic Clorox)
Remove any foliage & flower that will be below the level of water in your vase. This will help discourage bacteria growth and increase the life expectancy or your flowers.

Submersion:

Cut the flower stem at a 45-degree angle when fully submerged in a bowl of water using a sharp knife, pruner or scissors. Flower stems can be cut to varying lengths, depending on the type and height of the vase. Cutting it at a 45-degree angle will ensure that they have plenty of surface area to absorb water and that they don't sit flat on the bottom of the vase. I prefer tall glass vase with most of my cut flowers but for orchids, I used a round low glass vase.

Upkeep:

Maintain proper water level in your vase by topping it off every day.
Change the water every 2-3 days.

Gloria Maris, one of the famous Chinese restaurant in the country, is now open at Gateway Mall, Araneta Center. Not only it serves authentic Chinese cuisine, the new branch provides several function rooms for wedding and birthday receptions, private meetings and even for karaoke parties with a total floor capacity of approx. 800 guests.

Ohh, just having one of those days I need to remind myself - I AM BIGGER than any of my circumstances, POWERFUL to face my situation, and DEARLY LOVED no matter what - cause greater is He that lives in me than he that is in the world. I AM MORE THAN A CONQUEROR.

Pylones Rockwell

Pylones (pronounced pea-lone), the French boutique known for their creative collection of everyday items with adorable designs & innovative twists is now open in Manila. And I must say, it's creating quite a buzz in the social media lately.

Pylones shops have clever window displays and festive atmosphere. The shelves and walls are painted with bright colors accentuated with humorous and whimsy products that address every aspect of life including home, office, playtime, personal grooming, and even pets.

I especially enjoyed the kitchen tools section from ice cream scoops, magnetized pot holder, lady cheese grater, cups, scales... Everything are just so fun to look at. Mapapa-ohh ka talaga!

I have to be honest, prices cannot be compared to a regular dept store product. And with my household budget, I will have to prioritize which one I want / need first and save up for it. Pa isa-isa lang kumbaga. But it was pleasure visiting the store. So many inspirations for kitchen projects like the magnetized wall.

Power Breakfast On-the-Go | NESTLÉ ACTI-V Review

Most of the time, I have to be creative with breakfast. It is now a must in our family. And like most homemakers, preparing a healthy meal is a decisive effort we make everyday. As in effort ito!

And part of that healthy meal is adequate fiber intake to clean our system. Because to tell you frankly, I often need help in that area. The uncomfortable, bloated, and heavy feeling of constipation sometimes gets the best of me. Urgh! It's ugly. It hampers my daily routine and productivity - especially on a Monday!

Common causes of constipation are inadequate water intake; disruptive regular diet or routine (in common words - drastic on & off diet); S-T-R-E-S-S; resisting the urge to have a bowel movement (a.k.a. pampipigil); overuse of laxatives or stool softeners, which, over time, may weaken the bowel muscles; and inadequate fiber in the diet. Guilty?

If you experience infrequent bowel movements, swollen abdomen or bloating, and pain in the abdominal area, ay umamin na!

Because admittance gives way to solutions.

And here are quick and easy solutions you can try to help ease our tummy worries:
1. Try drinking two to four EXTRA glasses of water from the required daily intake

2. Take warm liquids, especially in the morning

3. Avoid erratic changes in diet - do it gradually

4. Manage your "stressors" / stress contributors by initially identifying them

5, Make time on the "throne" and develop it as a habit
6. Go with the natural and practical solutions

7. Add fiber to your daily diet.

High-fiber sources are from bannana, apple, raisins, nuts, oats, multi-grain cereals, rice, whole wheat pasta; and ohh, did I mention - chocolates?! But if you are always on-the-go, like me, I need daily fiber intake that will not require extensive prep time like peeling or cutting. And we don't want to hamper our pagpapasexy with extra chocolate or pasta for that ounce of fiber intake, right? So I tested the NESTLÉ ACTI-V for a week after the Nestle Go-Lounge event we attended.

My initial take with NESTLÉ ACTI-V is it's thicker than Nestle Fruit Selection Yogurt. It's sweet, creamy, and with real strawberry bits. In short, masarap! I easily finished my cup in a jiff.

My first cup (or 2) on Day 1, though, gave me an odd stomach cramps and gas due to sudden increase in fiber intake. A few weeks back, my husband came up to me with a "spur of the moment" date inivtation.

H: I have a surprise pero I'll say it na.

Me: Yes yes, do tell! (thinking of a dozen things that might be..)

H: We'll watch a show in CCP this Saturday.

Me: Sosyal! (but after Google-ing the show schedule) mmm, but there's no show scheduled this weekend Hun?!?

Ohh, doesn't it frustrate you?

This week, I learned about Tanghalang Pilipino TV - the official webnews channel of Cultural Center of the Philippines' resident theater company -Tanghalang Pilipino (TP). If you are a theater artist or an enthusiast in Manila, this is a must see. The page is very casual, interactive and gives up to speed information on the latest happenings in TP like audition schedules, show date updates, play teasers, ticket prices (and promos), and other related news. They even produce 'Quickie' videos and 3-5min video segments for interviews, audition invites, and behind-the-scene footages. Though, I find some of it a bit raw and poorly shot, the post editing is ok.

Anyhoo, beginning this weekend, Tanghalang Pilipino will be kicking off its 27th Theatre Season with Sandosenang Sapatos. Miss Tessa Prieto-Valdez is set to make her theater debut in it and will be playing the role of a shoe fairy.

The Thomas Edison Perspective on Beef Salpicao

My husband always give a brilliant face whenever he likes his food. He is very expressive at that and sadly, vice-versa. And with his long face at the dinner table a couple of nights ago, I knew immediately I'm in trouble.

Me : What do you think hun?
H: I didn't know what to expect. I thought it's salpicao.
Me: Well, I was aiming for salpicao.

That night, I sort of experimented in the kitchen with the sirloin beef I thawed earlier. Feeling ko kasi kaya ko na without looking up the recipe. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and 2 bulbs of garlic should do the trick, I told myself bravely as I recount the savory taste of salpicao I had that morning in Chocolate Kiss. Long story short, we were left with a huge serving of leftover that might end up as dog food if I keep it in the fridge as is.

The next day my husband asked me what's for dinner and I told him - beef salpicao! He begged me not to serve it (underlying to serve it to the dogs instead). As in ganong level. Little did he know I already Googled the recipe and found out I only need to do a few things to adjust the taste.

Batch # 2 (rework): Set aside the garlic. Fry the beef with butter then add about 2 tbsp of soy sauce and Worcestershire. Ohh my, amoy palang patok na! After the meat absorbed the sauce, mix the meat with garlic and olive oil.

So, what's the verdict that night - Sold out!

NESTLÉ ACTI-V Go Lounge last Saturday couldn't have come at a better time. ROMULO CAFÉ in Quezon City created such a wonderful backdrop for the relaxing afternoon in stored for us.

After registering our names, Jen, Kai & I immediately reserved our time slot for the spa massage. I availed of the Back Massage with Cold Pebbles to loosen my tense shoulder muscles due to bad office-posture and help ease my stiff neck which I've been nursing since Thursday. It was glorious! We even met Ms Leah Dy of Toccare & Fruits in Bloom in the mobile spa room. She's so sweet in accommodating us.

Afterwards, the organizers had us personalize our canvas chiller bags with colored fabric pens. It certainly brought out the kid in us as we try to be artsyfartsy with our designs. We had s much fun (& "revelations") while doing it, I'm definitely tagging this activity for future parties.

The main event of course is the introduction of Nestle Acti-V endorser, Ms Cherie Gil. OHMYG, she's gorgeous at 50! Now, who says you cannot age gracefully?

Ms Cherie shared to us some of her daily beauty regiments which include waking up with a smile & gratitude; lots of water; exercise; good diet and of course a cup of Nestle Acti-V yogurt. She emphasized that beauty starts from inside, you have to feel good within, then it will reflect in you. I agree. No amount of makeup can cover up a constipated face, diba?

I met lovely ladies during the event whom I shared more than a few laughs and giggles with. Cheese Load Spaghetti (drama in the kitchen)

My husband took over the kitchen the other night. Ohh, it was a riot.

He's been wanting to replicate his officemate's cheese macaroni so he insisted on cooking it even if we don't have all the right ingredients. Spaghetti instead of mac. Flour instead of corn starch...

But the drama didn't start there.

He asked me to do the PASTA because he admittedly doesn't have a clue how to do it. I said yes of course. And being a maasikaso wife, I also volunteered to prepare his ingredients.

Me: Hon, may onions? May garlic?

H: Yes hon. Paki hiwa na din yung red bell pepper.

Me: Suuuure. (Then, I boastfully showed him my recently acquired skill of chopping peppers from Chef Ramsay) Look Hun oh, no more mess with the seeds.

When he started cooking the sauce, I can't help myself to give "suggestions" on how he should do it.

Me: No, it should be like this... put this first... make sure to mix it like this...blablabla.

Then, he started giving me the face and complained,

H: Ang hirap magluto ng ganito.

Me: Now you know how I feel...

Pak. Ang init bigla sa kusina so I walked out to cool off.

Wait, di pwede ito. I know I have a point because he's literally just planning to mix all the ingredients in the pot. Pero di sasarap ang niluluto kapagmainit ang ulo!!! So I resolved to calm down (ala Maya lang naman ito) and go back to him. Hindi din kasi ako makatiis. So after making suyo, I asked him why he made me chop all the ingredients if he's not going to use it. He explained that he's only going to do the cheese. Mmm ok, I still don't get it.

Me: Hon, what does (your) cheese mac looks like?

H: It's red and has cheese on top (pointing to the sauce pan he's doing)

Boom! Now I know the problem. All the while I thought he only wants me to cook the pasta noodles and he will make the "white" sauce w/ loads of cheese. Haiz. A classic example of "communication gap" that could have been prevented or cause unthinkable damages.

Good thing we made up early in the process and our spaghetti didn't suffer. We even "baked" it afterwards in the oven toaster to improve the consistency and taste of the topping. OHH-MY-G ang sarap nya! Not bad for H's first try.

Kaya nga the general rule is there can only be one chef in the kitchen and everyone else say - yes, chef! But in our house of course, there is also the Queen of the Kitchen. And I say, maglilinis pa tayo pagkatapos nito Hun.

Pamper Me Time: Nail-A-Holics Gateway Mall

Late date? Magpaganda na lang muna tayo.

My husband and I made an agreement not to stress ourselves while waiting for each other especially when we're about to have a date. We made the pack after a big fight when I made him wait for more than 2 hours. I know it was bad. Gutom na gutom ang mahal ko, kaya ayun riot! I made suyo and bawi naman after. Give and take. Minsan sya ang bumibinggo, minsan ako. Hahaha.

So you'll be late for your date? Or you're the one waiting? Eto tips.

Communicate. Text/ email/ call early to inform your date about your situation. Some things cannot be avoided but future things can be prevented. Since I'm the makulit type and I know myself when it comes to wasted time, I call my husband about an hour before his shift ends to check on his status. This way I can manage my time and perhaps do a little shopping in between (charged to him).

Adjust. Give room for flexibility. If things are just not lining up according to plan, then change it! Our date night is every Monday. It's sacred to us. But since its a work day, we schedule for example a movie / dinner date perhaps 9 or 10 pm to give room for the other person to travel and etc. If one of us is running late, we make use of the time we have rather than brewing inis. Sayang ang date! After a couple of hiccups, we eventually learned (and still learning) to let go of the plan or make some adjustments.

Kaya naman, last Monday nagpaspa ako. Actually, it was a timely excuse to try the new nail salon in Gateway Mall (4F new wing).

Whether, weather?

Despite of the drizzle, my mother-in-law and I went out for a walk this morning. Whoohoo! I felt very accomplished afterwards. No more excuses this time. I had my second thoughts earlier since my sister, my walking partner for the 2nd week now, slept in today. Good thing my mother-in-law gamely agreed to walk with me. When we saw the raindrops before we left her house, it didn't bother her a bit and even offered to bring umbrellas. Now that's what you call - determination.

Giordano Philippines Brings Monsters University's Freshman Fair

Giordano Philippines gave us a taste of what it’s like to be a part of the world's best scare university - Monsters University. The MU Freshman's Fair at Trinoma Activity Center was filled with fun activities and it showcased the special Monsters University Collection by Giordano. It was a sure hit. Everybody was welcomed inside the iron gates last weekend, June 29-30, 2013.

Ohh, and did I mention - No tuition required!

My sisters and I participated in various games and activities in the MU Fair that tested our brains, guts and agility. Grabe! Kapressure din noh. I should have worn flats that day, what was I thinking?
