COLUMBUS - The 156^th Ohio State Fair welcomes amateur and professional artists from all over Ohio.

The Fine Arts Exhibition will showcase 300 works of art and will run daily throughout the Fair. All artwork including paintings, drawings, ceramics, glass, sculptures, photography and more can be viewed in the Cox Fine Arts Center between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

This year's professional jurors for the Fine Arts Exhibition include: Iduna Boehning of Dreseden, Germany and Rosemarie Fiore of New York, N.Y., along with amateur juror Richard Aschenbrand of Columbus, Ohio.

Other programs featured during the Fine Arts Exhibition include special events such as arts outreach programs as well as musicians, puppeteers, dancers and street art.

Fairgoers are also invited to participate in The Ohio State Fine Arts Patron Program, which provides opportunities for collectors of Ohio artwork to add to their unique compilations. The program also provides artists visibility and exposure statewide, while allowing patron members the opportunity to preview and make purchases prior to the opening of the exhibition.

ENTERTAINMENT LINE-UP

COLUMBUS- David Cook, Foreigner and Eddie Money are the final acts added to this year's Ohio State Fair entertainment line-up.

Classic rock favorites Foreigner, with special guest Eddie Money, will take the stage on Wed., Aug. 5, with tickets priced at only $24. American Idol rocker David Cook will perform on Sat., Aug. 8, with tickets available for only $28. Tickets for both shows will go on-sale at noon on Sat., May 9 at all Ticketmaster outlets, and include admission to the Fair when purchased in advance.

Ohio egg industry to sponsor culinary contests at 2009 Ohio State Fair

COLUMBUS - It's almost that time of year again, when Ohio chefs roll up their sleeves to earn ribbons, neighborhood prestige and maybe a few bucks while competing in the numerous culinary competitions offered at the Ohio State Fair. At the 2009 fair, which runs from July 29 - August 9, the Ohio Poultry Association (OPA) will be offering Ohio cooks opportunities to compete in three culinary competitions, including one new contest, Cupcakes Galore.

"The fair gives us the opportunity to showcase the state's outstanding egg and poultry industries while giving fairgoers a taste of fresh, Ohio-produced food," said Jim Chakeres, OPA executive vice president. "Eggs can be used to make a wide variety of everyday meals to suit everyone's taste buds. And, since eggs provide the highest quality protein and average only 12 cents per egg, they also are a nutritious and economical solution."

New to the fair this year is the Cupcakes Galore competition that will take place at 3 p.m. on July 31 in the DiSalle Center. This contest is for amateur bakers only. All recipes must be homemade and each participant must use a combination (whites or yolks) of three to four eggs in each recipe. In addition, a baker from the Kroger Company will conduct a cooking demonstration about the popularity of cupcakes, while giving attendees some great party ideas.

In addition, "Breakfast for Two" is returning to the fair for the second year. The competition will kick off at 9 a.m. on August 1 with a celebrity chef cooking challenge featuring NewsCenter's Johnny DiLoretto and WCMH-TV's Marshall McPeek.

After the celebrity chef competition, a second class will be open to anyone from 10 to 101 years of age. Exhibitors will prepare a breakfast dish for two using only six ingredients. Each recipe must contain four eggs and at least one of the following: three ounces shredded cheese, one cup milk or eight ounces yogurt.

The popular "Smile and Say, Cheesecake!" Recipe Contest will make its fifth appearance at the fair. Three classes of cheesecakes will be judged including a savory appetizer, dessert cheesecake and culinary professional class. Each cheesecake must contain at least four fresh Ohio eggs and "real dairy" products.

"The culinary professional's class will be a great opportunity for chefs, caterers and bakery professionals to showcase their talents and have the chance to win $300 in first place prize money," said Chakeres. He said contestants must be a working chef or culinary student to enter and compete in the professional class of the contest. The competition will be held at 10 a.m. on July 31.

Ohio is the number-two egg-producing state in the nation, behind Iowa. The state produces more than eight billion eggs each year. Ohio is 11th in the nation for turkey production and produces almost 200 million pounds of chicken for sale each year.

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Fair is looking for talented young musicians for membership in the prestigious All-Ohio State Fair Band and the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir.

Interested and dedicated high school musicians who are students in grades 9 - 12 are encouraged to apply for membership. The All-Ohio State Fair Band and Youth Choir are traditions at the Ohio State Fair that continue to be anticipated features each year.

Participating students gain a unique musical and educational experience, as well as an opportunity to build many lasting friendships during a two-week stay at the Ohio State Fair. Being a member of the band or choir offers a valuable challenge to learn and perform music of varied genres, as well as an opportunity to work with a staff of talented and motivational music educators from across Ohio.

Cadillac Sky's takes on Tennessee and Cleveland this weekend!!

Tenessee has become Cadillac Sky's home away from home over the past couple of years. Having spent so much time rehearsing and recording there they feel completely comfortable in the Volunteer State. This weekend offers a double dip. On Friday C-Sky will play the historic Station Inn in Nashville. A show that guarantees to offer some surprises and to be packed- so get there early. On Saturday they will journey up to the beautiful Paramount Center for the Performing Arts located in Bristol, straddling the line between Tennessee and Virginia. A perfect oppurtunity for folks on both sides to catch the live artistry that is Cadillac Sky. Finally, on Sunday the fellas will make their debut performance in Cleveland, OH. It will serve as a sort of belated birthday celebration (1/20) for their new guitar player, David Mayfield, who is a native of nearby Kent, OH. The place is the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern- a great intimate environment that provides a really good time. J.P. and The Chatfield Boys, a local favorite, will get the party started around 7: 30pm.

Those who have not had a chance to see Cadilla Sky in the past couple of months owe it to themselves to make the journey to one of the venues this weekend. The fellas have found a place of enlightenment both musically and spiritually which has in turn made their live show even more enthralling than before. They manage to be innovative, introspective, and inspired all at the same time. Don't miss your chance to see this revolutionary acoustic experience!

The 2009 Clark County Fair campsite lottery is Wednesday,
February 11th, at 7:00pm in the Annex Building. Applications for
the unsold and new campsites are availble at the fair office and on
our website at ClarkCountyFair.org. Lottery applications will be
accepted in the fair office from Monday, January 5, 2009, through
Friday, January 9, 2009, during normal office hours. No
applications will be accepted past this date.

All lottery applications must be accompanied with the $225.00
campsite fee. If the applicant does not receive a campsite his fee
will be returned in full. If he does receive a campsite but it is
a primitive site $25.00 will be refunded.

As winners are drawn they will have a choice of the sites still
available. If the winner is not present at the drawing they will
be assigned the next numerical site available.

Lottery applications will be available at the fair office and on
the fair website at www.ClarkCountyFair.org.

You must present a valid ID to register for the lottery.

Belleville Street Fair

The Bellville Street Fair ..

Only two independent fairs remain in the state of Ohio and both of them take place each September right here in Ohio.

The Bellville Street Fair is underway in southern Richland County now through Saturday, Sept. 13, while Loudonville's Independent Street Fair gets started Sept. 30.

And, there's a reason Bellville calls its fair "The Little World's Fair." People come from all over to attend, according to Bob McConkie, Bellville Agricultural Society president. "It's a big homecoming reunion for people who once lived here and moved away. They come from all over."

McConkie says these street fairs offer the same things county fairs do, including produce and animal exhibits, merchant tents, food, rides, carnival games and, of course, live entertainment.

Bellville's fair will feature the music of the Van-Dells 8 p.m. Saturday. They sing oldies, dating back to the Fifties.

ANDERSON TURNER TO JUDGE STATE FAIR ARTS EXHIBIT

COLUMBUS - Accomplished artist Anderson Turner of Garrettsville, Ohio has been selected to evaluate the amateur division of the 2008 Fine Arts Exhibition.

Turner has exhibited numerous works of art both regionally and nationally, and has been recognized with various awards and scholarships by the Akron Area Art Alliance, the Ohio Art League, and the Vermont South Studio, among others. Additionally, Turner is a published author who has written several books and journals centered around ceramics, as well as articles for publications including Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated and Metalsmith Magazine.

Turner earned his bachelor of fine arts (BFA) at the University of Arizona and his master of fine arts (MFA) in ceramics from Kent State University. He currently holds multiple roles at the Kent State University School of Art, including the director of galleries, adjunct professor and adviser.

The Ohio State Fair is accepting entries for the 2008 show through June 7. Late entries are accepted through June 11 with an additional processing fee.

Eligibility is open to all Ohio residents who are 17 years of age or older as of June 1, 2008. Work must be original and untutored. The exhibition offers division for professionals and amateurs.

More than $15,000 is awarded to the winning artists in a variety of categories.

In addition to prize money, selected work is eligible for the Patron Purchase Program. The program is designed to provide new and established collectors of Ohio artworks the unique opportunity to add to their collections, while providing the artists statewide visibility and exposure.

TIM PORTLOCK TO JUDGE STATE FAIR ARTS EXHIBIT

COLUMBUS - Accomplished artist Tim Portlock of Philadelphia is one of two jurors selected to evaluate the professional division of the 2008 Fine Arts Exhibition.

Portlock is a visual artist who works in a variety of media, ranging from painting to computer technology. His digital work varies, including installations in virtual reality, interactive narratives and 3-D simulations of historic spaces. His subject matter primarily focuses on navigating space and how this process creates a dialogue that constructs identity.

Portlock has shown his work across North America, Europe and South America. Specifically, he has exhibited at Arts Electronica (Austria), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), ISEA Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (Japan) and at the 404 Festival (Argentina).

Portlock currently teaches in the department of film and media studies at Hunter College New York.

The Ohio State Fair is accepting entries for the 2008 show through June 7. Late entries are accepted through June 11 with an additional processing fee.

COLUMBUS - Accomplished artist Michael Ferris Jr. of New York is one of two jurors selected to evaluate the professional division of the 2008 Fine Arts Exhibition.

Ferris has shown his work individually and as a part of a group at numerous venues across the U.S. as well as internationally. Most recently, he has held one-person exhibits at Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago, ATM Gallery in New York and Aron Packer Gallery in Chicago. His latest work will be showcased at an exhibition held from April 3 through May 17 at the George Adams Gallery in New York.

His work has been featured in dozens of group exhibitions with some of the most including "The Besser Collection" at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, "Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program 40th Anniversary" at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, and the Sosabeol International Art Expo at GyeongGi-do in Korea.

He is the recipient of several awards and honors, including the George Sugarman Foundation Grant, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program Grant and the ACC Emerging Artist Grant.

Ferris earned his bachelor of fine arts (BFA) at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1991 and his master of fine arts (MFA) from Indiana University in 1996. Ferris typically focuses on sculpture, with his unique work consisting of wood forms surfaced with a self-invented wood overlay

The Ohio State Fair is accepting entries for the 2008 show through June 7. Late entries are accepted through June 11 with an additional processing fee.

Eligibility is open to all Ohio residents who are 17 years of age or older as of June 1, 2008. Work must be original and untutored. The exhibition offers division for professionals and amateurs.

More than $15,000 is awarded to the winning artists in a variety of categories.

In addition to prize money, selected work is eligible for the Patron Purchase Program. The program is designed to provide new and established collectors of Ohio artworks the unique opportunity to add to their collections, while providing the artists statewide visibility and exposure.

LARRY BEAGLE, 1954-2008

ENERA, Ohio - Larry W. Beagle, 53, a farmer who raised livestock and, with his wife, Debra, began a retail greenhouse business, died Wednesday at home in Hancock County's Eagle Township from complications of cancer. He was ill for almost three years, but he still did what he could on the farm and with Beagle's Blooming Business. "He would crawl out there if he had to. He was probably in the greenhouse and in the barn last week," his wife said. Mr. Beagle grew up on a farm in Eagle Township. He was a vocational agriculture teacher at Vanlue High School after his 1973 graduation from Arlington High School, but left the classroom after a year. "He just wanted to be a farmer," his wife said.

Baird crowned Ohio fairs queen

By RYAN CARTER Staff Writer Bethany Baird, the 2006 Fayette County Fair Queen, was named the 2008 Ohio Fairs Queen on Tuesday at the annual Ohio Fair Managers Convention, which is being held this week at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Fifty-six county fair or independent fair queens from across the state competed in the event, but in the end, Fayette County’s own claimed the crown. “It is definitely an honor to represent our county, the state and everything that county fairs represent,” said Baird. “I was confident going into it. It was something that I wanted, but I also tried to be realistic about my chances because there were so many accomplished fair queens. A large number of them had extensive experience in both 4-H and FFA, experience that was as much or even greater than my own experience. It was extremely competitive.”
