Superintendent Dr. Rick Smith congratulated the seniors and gave a few words of advice saying, “Partake in honest reflection. Continue to work on your skills and your craft to be better each and every day. Honest reflection will help you continue on your path to success.”

Dr. Smith also encouraged students to know who they are and be themselves. “We expect great things out of the class of 2016,” finished Dr. Smith, “achieve greatness by staying true to yourself.”

The ceremony was led by the Ohio Hi-Point Students of the Months.

Taylor Tinsley addressed her fellow classmates saying, “Be proud of yourselves, but leave here knowing this isn’t the end of your story. Let’s show the world what we can do.”

“We at Ohio Hi-Point chose a different path,” said Liam Smith, “We chose to pursue a career- to find something we’re passionate about- and better our possibilities for our future. You will always have the knowledge and skills from Ohio Hi-Point for your next step.
The evening’s final student speaker, Brett Rappold, addressed his peers saying, “Ohio Hi-Point and career-tech is changing how education is taught. We are motivated and driven to learn because we experience real-world learning situations. Our education was more than textbooks and four-wall classrooms. Others may pursue their dreams another day, but not us, because we’ve been building our foundation for what we want our success to look like since the first day of classes at OHP.

The teachers and staff do tremendous work to prepare us for our next step. Career Technical Education gets a bad rap for what it was years ago. Let’s change that stigma for good. Congratulations, class of 2016!”

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio- Ryan Gilbert, an Ohio Hi-Point Career Center English instructor, was recognized as a recipient of the 2016 Excellence in Teaching award by the Bellefontaine Rotary during the 24th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards luncheon this week.

The Excellence in Teaching award honors three educators in Logan county grades pre-K through twelve who improve student achievement in and outside academics and utilizes innovative techniques to support high-quality teaching and learning.

Young, along with Benjamin Logan Social Studies teacher, Trisha Hemmeigarn, and Indian Lake’s Art teacher, Erin Miller, were the recipients of the prestigious award.

“Mr. Gilbert has been a student favorite for several years because of his creative approach to content,” commented Caleb Lang, Ohio Hi-Point’s Academic Supervisor, “he actively engages students and empowers them to learn in his classroom.”

“I feel very honored to receive this award” said Gilbert, “I believe good classroom management is about surrounding control to students and giving them ownership of the projects they complete. My goal is to empower young people.”

Eight students submitted nominations to the selection committee for Mr. Gilbert. “Students choose to attend Ohio Hi-Point to pursue careers and not necessarily the academics. To be nominated by eight students shows the impact of Mr. Gilbert’s teaching,” finished Lang.

A few snippets from the nominations said, “Mr. Gilbert’s approach to education is to put the student above the grade and to make sure we are in a position to succeed.” Another submitted nominations said, “Mr. Gilbert is more than just a teacher. He is a mentor… He understands how to treat everyone different with different teaching styles and creative activities.”

This is Ohio Hi-Point’s eighth teacher to be recognized for the Excellence in Teaching award. Previous recipients include Monica Young in 2015, Mike Kouse in 2014, Tom Carrig in 2013, Peter Raatz in 2012, Deborah Purcell in 2009, Robin Curly in 2005 and JoEtta Spain in 2003.

Has your bowl ever been empty? Food insecurity is a hard reality for many of our neighbors and Second Harvest Food Bank is working hard to alleviate this inequity. You can too.

Empty Bowls of Logan County, an event to raise awareness about the growing problem of hunger in Logan County, will be held Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center in the high school cafeteria from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for Second Harvest Food Bank for Logan, Champaign and Clark Counties. For $15, patrons will receive a beautiful hand-crafted ceramic bowl (made by local potters, artists and high school students) and a simple meal of soup and bread. All proceeds benefit the Food Bank, which supports Logan County member agencies- all local food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.

Beautiful bowls have been hand-crafted by students at Bellefontaine High School.

Soup Donors participating this year include Bob Evans Farms, Green Hills Community, Middleburg United Methodist Church, Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shop, The Whitmore House, Ohio Hi-Point Culinary Arts Students, Union Station Café and Aunt Millie’s Restaurant. Domino’s is providing bread.

It is estimated that 14.6% of Logan County resident are food insecure. Food insecurity refers USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods.

“Empty Bowls is a wonderful way for Second Harvest Food Bank to bring the community together. The event wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses, restaurants, and individuals joining together in raising awareness to end hunger. We look forward to seeing you,” said Tyra Jackson, Executive Director Second Harvest Food Bank.

As the only food bank in Clark, Champaign, and Logan Counties, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes over six million pounds of food annually, with over six hundred and ten thousand pounds going directly to benefit Logan County residents. This amount of food equates to over 510,00 meals distributed to food insecure residents of Logan County. Second Harvest Food Bank’s daily operation consists of sourcing and gathering food, sorting and cataloging the food, then warehousing the inventory to be distributed to agency members throughout a three county service area.

Second Harvest Food Bank member agencies in Logan County include Buckeye Gospel Barn, Our Daily Bread, Five Loaves Food Pantry, St. Vincent DePaul Bellefontain & Russels Point, Caring Friends, United Christian Services, Give & Take, Recovery Zone Bellefontaine. These agencies along with the Second Harvest Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry and Senior Commodities Food Program serve seven thousand Logan County residents annually.

Second Harvest Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. Second Harvest Food Bank is responsible for safe handling of all food products adhering to state and federal guidelines including providing member oversight to pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.

Join us on Thursday, May 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a modest meal with a powerful message.

The senior High School of Business class began the business after surveying the student body to see if a coffee shop was wanted. In addition, the class then researched other student-run coffee shops around the state. Once the students created a business plan, they presented and earned approval from school administrators. The Daily Grind opened December 2, 2015 and operates Monday through Friday from 7:15-7:35 a.m. To date, the coffee shop has sold over 750 cups of coffee.

“As far as personal profits, our pay is our grades,” commented Conner Wylie, “If we show up on time, we earn points toward our grade in the class and if we show up late, points are docked. We’re operating a business, but customizing it within academic parameters. We aren’t in the business for the money, we are doing this for academics.”

While running the business, the students are also giving back to the community. For every ice coffee sold (the most popular drink amongst the student body) $.25 goes to Special Olympics Ohio, which is the organization that BPA works with throughout the year. The students also are using a certain percentage of the profits to support a scholarship fund for a graduating High School of Business student.

The Board of Education recognized Janessa Queen, an Allied Health & Nursing senior, from Bellefontaine High School, and Matt Burchett, a Diesel Technology senior, from Graham High School, as Students of the Month for March 2016.

Cameron Warner, representing Congressman Jim Jordan, spoke to the Board about the Federal Government’s new Every Student Will Succeed Act that changed from No Child Left Behind.

Two staff members will retire at the end of the school year. Vivian L. Brewer of West Mansfield will retire as the Guidance Secretary, and Carol J. Siebeneck of Lakeview will retire as a Paraprofessional.

Bethany Smith of Plain City was hired as the Marysville Satellite Manufacturing Instructor, Kurt Forrest of Galloway was hired as a Satellite CBI Instructor, and Carrie Draper of St. Paris was hired as the Assistant Satellite Technology Coordinator.

In other board action:

Approved the report of the Treasurer including the February 2016 Financial Statement; interest and investments; and appropriation increases and decreases

Accepted the resignations of Todd M. Skaggs, Wapakoneta, Social Studies Instructor, effective June 30, 2016, for personal reasons; and Michelle L. Swaney, High School Director, effective June 30, 2016, for the purpose of reassignment

Approved the out-of-state study trip attendance of Shalie Logan, Kenton Ag Instructor, to accompany approximately four students attending the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in June; and Delaney Althauser, Kenton Ag Student, to attend the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in July

Approved a one-time stipend for approved certified staff members and food service staff members working at the Indian Lake Innovation Camp, June 13-17, 2016.

Approved stipends for approved certified staff members for the creation of new academic courses for the 2016/17 school year, which will come out of the Carl D. Perkins Grant

Approved substitute bus driver pay to $14.00 per hour while driving, and $8.00 per hour while sitting, effective April 1, 2016

Approved new, revised, deleted and/or replaced policies

Approved teacher’s supplemental contracts and extended days for approved staff members

The next Board of Education meeting is set for Wednesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in Room 102A in the high school building.
