All Aboard - the Hogwarts Express is Leaving the Station on July 15

In a 3 week long course offered through the Wisconsin in Scotland Program, University of Wisconsin-Superior professor Dr. Monica Roth Day will lead students on trips to locations pivotal in J.K. Rowling's writing of the Harry Potter series.

The "Troubles and Torments at Hogwarts" class will explore the themes behind the Harry Potter books as well as fulfill a Social Science General Education requirement. Students will use developmental theories to understand Harry, Hermione, and Ron and their growth from kids to wizards. Space in the Hogwarts course is still available in Module 3 from July 15-August 1.

Roth Day says "students can expect lively discussions and field trips!"

In their course, work, students will "travel into Edinburgh to see the place where J.K. Rowling wrote her first book, and other areas which are important to her and the development of the characters in the Harry Potter series."

Places of interest include the Elephant House, where the first chapters of the series were written, and a cemetery where character names were discovered on headstones. Students may also travel to the town of Alnwick in northern England to visit Alnwick Castle, which serves as the exterior of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films.

Her interest in Scotland and the opportunity to work closely with students drew Dr. Roth Day to this program. "I've always wanted to travel to Scotland and when I heard about Wisconsin in Scotland, I was excited about the opportunity. I've worked in residential programs, and traveled with students. I know what an amazing opportunity it can be to live and learn together."

The Wisconsin in Scotland (WIS) program is an amazing experience that offers virtually limitless opportunities for educational and personal growth. It is an opportunity full of challenges, new experiences, and great rewards (http://www.uwrf.edu/WisconsinInScotland/).

Participants will live in Dalkeith Palace, an 18th century palace owned by the Duke of Buccleuch. Students can choose to study for a full semester, or may choose a three to nine week long summer program. Courses are taught by both visiting American professors and native Scottish professors.

Translate Study Abroad to the Job Search

Study abroad and career office professionals from several universities will share strategies in how to best help students translate 'study abroad' for the job search in a webinar at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 7 in Swenson Hall 2074.

In the information-packed hour and a half program, viewers will learn about strategies for coaching students to set career-related goals for their study abroad experience and then demonstrate its value. The webinar also features:

Examples of practical tools to guide student job search preparation
Research findings on what employers are looking for
Ways to integrate career development and study abroad programming

UW-Superior Students and Faculty Member Run the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Edinburgh

Dr. Bill Simpson who is currently teaching in the Wisconsin in Scotland Program is shown here with Asia Hill-Dant, Terry Schultz and Alex Benner, UW-Superior students who also completed the Edinburgh Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon on April 13, 2013. On that day over 25,000 runners hit the streets of Edinburgh as the city hosted three running events: the Edinburgh Marathon, the Scottish Half Marathon and the Hairy Haggis relay. Simpson teaches in the Exercise Science Program.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe - August 2013

The world's oldest and largest arts festival, the Festival Fringe grew out of the first Edinburgh International Festival after World War II. For over sixty years, one of Europe's most beautiful cities has seen an invasion of performers from around the world come together in a magic blend of artistic and creative energy. For three weeks, literally hundreds of performances take place in a variety of spaces located throughout the city. Thousands of people from around the world attend the performances and crowd the Royal Mile watching the street performers. At the end of the Royal Mile and next to the walls of Edinburgh Castle is the world-famous spectacle of hundreds of pipers and drummers in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

This superb opportunity is for anyone interested in an intensive experience in theater, not just theater majors and minors. The program was especially designed for students who could not study away for a longer period and satisfies the Fine and Applied Arts general education requirement in History, Criticism and Appreciation.

The students will reside at Dalkeith House, a stately manor house built in 1702 on the ruins of a castle and home to the Wisconsin in Scotland Program. Within slightly over a two week period,students experience a dozen performances including theater, dance, comedy,musicals, operas, exhibits and events and learn how to critically analyze the performances and write performance reviews. Venues range from beautifully appointed historical theaters to funky sites such as the "Udderbelly" which offers seating inside a gigantic helium-filled upside-down cow!

Free time is also provided with opportunities to experience many other sights in the area including fantastic museums and galleries in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the beautiful Roslyn Chapel where parts of the movie DaVinci Code were filmed.

Wednesday, April 10, will feature the Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the Multicultural Center at 7:00 p.m. sponsored by the International Peace Studies Association. Watch for other information.

Try your skills at Ping Pong, a highly competitive sport in other areas of the world on Thursday, April 11. If you cannot play, at least come to watch the fun in the MWC
from 5:00-7:00 p.m!

You won't want to miss the World Student Association's annual International Cooking Demonstration at noon on Saturday, April 13 in the Pilgrim Lutheran Church adjacent to the campus. Observe the preparation of ten different ethnic cuisines and then enjoy the tasty results! This free event is open to all ages from the community.

Family Fun Day on Sunday, April 14 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the YU Atrium will wrap up the week with a drumming circle performed by students from the Nettleton Elementary School in Duluth, international crafts, story-telling from different cultures, and games. Light snacks will be served. This free event is also open to all ages from the community.

ECON 301: Emerging India: From Gandhi to Globalization

Included in the program will be foundation lectures in Delhi by Indian faculty, a visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal, time spent at Gandhi's ashram and visiting village development projects, a study of eco-tourism and development in Kerala (including a houseboat trip in the backwaters), and homestays in two locations in Kerala.

Faculty program leader, Dr. Jerry Hembd states "This year's program also includes, for the first time, two weeks in the state of Kerala - which calls itself 'God's Own Country.' I am very excited about this addition to the program. Kerala has historically been seen as a development success story-particularly in terms of education and health care-and we will spend much of our time exploring what this means and the lessons that can be learned. We will be interacting with a variety of local organizations and making numerous site visits. This will also allow us the opportunity to travel by houseboat in the state's backwaters to experience eco-tourism firsthand."

The Estimated Program Fees based on 10 participants is $4,500 which includes
tuition, airfare and other expenses. Any additional financial aid for which a student is eligible will be added to their fall award. Program length can be extended to 28 days in India in order to qualify for the Benjamin Gilman federal scholarship for eligible students. Course prerequisites include ECON 235 (or equivalent)or consent of instructor and Junior Status with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Non-Econ majors are encouraged to apply. The Study Away Fair in the YU Atrium will showcase options available to UW-Superior students.

Students who study away might climb Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland, explore the places writer J.K. Rowling used in writing the Harry Potter series, volunteer at a local after school program in Costa Rica, eat bulgogi with students at Yonsei University in Korea, create a mural with children in a Mexican village, walk the Great Wall of China, visit the famous monuments of Paris, learn about ceremonial rituals in Bali, student teach abroad, learn about sustainable agriculture in India, volunteer in community agencies in Ghana, to name just a few of the opportunities available!

Study away offers a chance to explore the world while earning credits that satisfy general education and major requirements. Information about scholarships and how financial aid will apply will be available.

For those who prefer to remain closer to home, the National Student Exchange is a great choice and, in many cases, will help students graduate on time! In this program, students can exchange for a semester or year to nearly 200 institutions in the U.S., its territories and several Canadian provinces. To date, UW-Superior students have studied in 17 states, Puerto Rico and 5 Canadian provinces. Like other exchange programs, students pay UW-Superior's low tuition no matter where they choose to study in the program.

Study away returnees will be available to share first-hand experiences about their programs.

A dream comes true in Ghana

Dara Fillmore's journey to intercultural awareness began as a young child spending time with youth and adults from various countries and from divergent backgrounds within the U.S. Her family fostered many children but also hosted many students and chaperones from Sweden, Honduras, Germany, China, Moldova, Georgia, Korea and Japan. "Involving these friends and family members in hikes, camping, fishing, berry picking, horseback riding, and working on a hobby farm are some of my fondest memories. In turn, I learned about holidays in other cultures, languages, ethnic foods, traditional clothing, cultural values and differing cultural mindsets. I have always dreamed of diving into another country's culture to learn about daily life, not just as a tourist, but as a volunteer."

With the help of the prestigious Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, a federal award, Dara's dream has now come true! She is currently using skills gained from her journalism minor in Ghana, Africa on a J-term study away program led by Dr. Ephraim Nikoi, Assistant Professor, Communicating Arts, of the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Each student in the program has selected a topic to research with the help of local professionals and community organizations.

Dara states, "I am excited to work with La Mansaamo Kpee International and the newspaper this organization prints to reach out to the local community. I hope to research how this paper affects the people who read it, and how it could have a broader impact in the area. I might even get an article published in the newspaper if there is a topic they would like me to cover. I have never been abroad before, so this will be an inspiring experience."

In addition to time spent in Accra, Ghana's capital, the students will enjoy field trips to other sites including a cocoa research institute (two African nations, Côte d'Ivoire
and Ghana, produce more than half of the world's cocoa), a batik lesson from the 'Global Mamas', and a visit to the Cape Coast Castle with its infamous 'door of no return' which for more than 100 years launched millions of Africans captured off this shore into a short and brutal life of slavery. The students will also have time to unwind at beautiful beaches, a nice contrast to January in the northland!

Upon returning home, Dara will fulfill her Gilman commitment by sharing her experiences on campus and in the community and encouraging other students to apply for the Gilman Scholarship.
