Finally, No More Medical Syringes and Needles (Part 2)

It took me one week before I continued my narrative about my confinement in a hospital due to high fever and persistent cough. The reason is not because I'm busy and do not have the time, but rather, I just let myself calm down first so that when I finally share my experience and the lessons learned, they will be based on facts and not on emotions.

To make the long story short, let me start by saying that I was disappointed with the way the services of a certain hospital (where I got confined) was rendered. I was attended by the consultant when I was already on my second day of confinement, August 12, 2012 at about 5:00 pm, and the visit lasted for a few minutes only. He merely asked me a question or two on how I felt regarding my health concerns. I complained about the pain in my stomach that radiated towards my back, and he told me it was just muscle pains due to my chronic cough. The resident doctor who accompanied the consultant mentioned my daughter's request to have a KUB (kidney + urinary bladder) ultrasound done, because she found out I had RBCs (blood) in my urine, which may signify the presence of kidney stones. After that brief encounter with my attending physician, we were back to the normal routine with nurses and interns attending to me, checking on my BP, temperature, administering my oral medications, and injecting Cefuroxime (antibiotic) through my intravenous line. Meanwhile, my eldest son Mark worked on my transfer to a more comfortable room.
The next day, August 13, 2012, the consultant visited me again at about 8:00am. He did not say anything except "Very good, I see you've transferred to a new room." I told him about my plans of checking out of the hospital as soon as possible. He said we still have to wait for the results of the ultrasound which was done at around 6:00am that morning. Late in the afternoon, my son followed up the ultrasound results but the staff at the nurse's station told him that the doctor should be the one to discuss results with the patient.
On my fourth day of confinement, August 14, 2012, I was really determined to check out. There were no updates on the results of the laboratory examinations done to me, but I was feeling better already and I thought I will get much better when I'm home. Mark facilitated my billing statement, which he later showed me. Lo and behold! I was shocked to find out that the consultant's professional fee was a lumpsum of ten thousand and five hundred pesos (Php 10,500). This hefty amount covered merely two insignificant visits from my doctor (P4,500 charged to my Philhealth plus P6,000 directly payable to the consultant. Overall, my total bill was P41,289.20 for four days stay in the hospital. I did not immediately pay the bill, and instead, my initial reaction was to question the P10,500 professional fee. I thought that it was too much for just two quick visits by the consultant, not to mention that I truly felt I was not taken good care of. I then requested to talk to the Medical Director but I the staff tried to convinced me that they will just negotiate it on my behalf.
The head of the Billing Section acted as mediator over the issue, and she discussed it with the Medical Director, who then contacted the consultant. Finally at about 5:00 pm, the consultant entered my room. I discussed with him my concerns, and after our conversation, he agreed to waive the P4,500 reimbursable from Philhealth, which the hospital would later have to pay me (after they receive the check from SSS). This means I will be have to pay the consultant an amount of P6,000 cash instead of P10,500.
Before I finally checked out from the Hospital, the Billing Section requested me to drop by, and I was surprised as I found out that their head, Ellen, was my former student in UE. A bigger surprise came when she told me that before the consultant signed my Medical Abstract, he changed the final diagnosis from Community Aquired Pneumonia to just Acute Bronchitis. In effect, the amount reimbursable from Philhealth was reduced from an initial amount of P4,500 to merely P1,500. Ellen apologized but I could only sigh in disappointment as I realized the unprofessionalism of the consultant. I knew he changed my final diagnosis for me to get a smaller amount of reimbursement from SSS (rates of Philhealth benefits are affected by the final diagnoses of an admitted patient). It was clear that he wanted to get even with me after I complained about the exorbitant fee he was charging earlier.
I thanked all the staff for all the help they extended to me, but at the back of my mind, I vowed never to set foot in that hospital again.

Finally I was discharged from the hospital after four days of confinement. I was admitted at the Hospital on August 11, 2012, 8:30 AM (Hospital's official time , although I was physically in the hospital premises as early as 6AM) due to very high fever and persistent cough. I am not so comfortable with a hospital ambience but due to recent experiences I had in the flooded streets brought by Habagat, I was scared then of Leptospirosis.
I was attended in the emergency room by a young lady in white. I could not tell if she is a nurse, or a medical intern. She checked on my fever (39.0'C) and BP(147/70). I asked for the resident doctor to attend to my case because I was chilling and my whole stomach was in severe pain. After an hour, the resident physician came and threw the same questions being asked already by the nurse who initially attended to me.(since when was my fever and cough, what medicines had I taken already)

To all students taking up Integration Subjects:

This is to inform everyone that there is no final decision yet on the status of your examination scheduled on August 11, 2012. There will be a discussion between UECRSS Director and ACLAT Chair tomorrow, August 10, 2012 regarding a possible re-scheduling of the exam. Personally I am bargaining to defer the exam for valid reasons:

1. The three days suspension of classes due to heavy rains and flooded streets definitely shortchanged the students in terms of important topics that should be discussed by the faculty reviewer.

2. Majority of students taking up Integration subjects in UE Caloocan are residing in CAMANAVA Area. It is a common knowledge that this area almost turned into an OCEAN at the height of the calamity that struck the whole Philippines. Some of the books, notebooks and other review materials of students are now part of items for disposal.

I am hoping that any decision we come up with, will be favorable to the students. ~~Back to school again, see you tomorrow.~~

UPDATE: I just learned that President Garcia suspended classes in all levels tomorrow, August 10, 2012 at UE Caloocan and UE Manila. So just wait for further announcements regarding your Integration Subject Examination. Stay safe. :-)

IT'S A WORKING HOLIDAY!

Today is the first holiday for the 1st semester of SY 2011-2012. At last I will have a whole day rest after working six days a week for the last two weeks. Yes, I, together with the College Secretary Madam Simbillo and some BA staff have been working overtime including Saturdays (last June 11 and June 18) up to 9:00 PM just to fix some problems in conflicting schedules of students, dissolved classes, faculty load, room assignments, etc. I deserved this day when I don't have to wake up early to meet my 7:30AM class. :-)
But here in front of my computer, my mind is still focused on preparing my lesson for my class in Financial Accounting tomorrow at 7:30AM. As an added bonus, my daughter served me a cup of coffee and Gardenia toasted bread (promotion alert :-) ) with butter which she prepared herself. Really this is the best coffee I ever tasted! Being served by your children in some of your needs does wonders in a mom's world.
Thanks to Janine for your comment in my blog yesterday. Being remembered by my student whom I met few or several years ago, brings much joy to my heart. Staying put in the academe (21 years) may not be a wise decision to some people who put much premium on money, but I honestly say that it is in sharing my time and knowledge with my students where I find happiness and fulfillment.
Yes, today is a holiday because there are no classes, but for me it is my time to prepare good products/services ready for delivery to my students when classes resume on June 21, 2011. I draw inspiration from the words of our Dean Rogelio V. Paglomutan, "Work is Prayer".

New Beginnings

I haven't blogged for quite sometime because I have been too busy with my job as Chair of the Department of Accountancy. There were a lot of concerns that had to be addressed. At the end of each day I'm often tired and exhausted. But then I have to revisit my passion for writing because I promised my students that I will post their assignment in my blog. :-)
A new semester has just started and everyone is excited especially the freshmen. This semester, I will be handling the First Section BSA1A for their first taste of an Accounting subject. I'm so inspired listening to each one of them introducing himself/herself and citing his/her dreams and plans for the future. Their ambition is mostly anchored on giving their families a better life, not just on attaining success for self gain. Knowing that I will be touching the lives of these innocent young students really gives me a sense of pride and fulfillment. The truth is, in the end, it is not the hourly rate or the gross monthly pay that matters, but the non-negotiable heartfelt joy in the life of a teacher that counts most and this can't be measured in monetary terms.
My dear students, welcome! Step up, make your voices heard, and break barriers. Be the next batch to bring more glory to the University of the East Caloocan Campus. I hope that your stay in UE will give you the opportunities to be the best of what you can become! :-)

Meeting With Three Young Presidents

This afternoon I met three young presidents at UE Caloocan Campus. I'm amazed by their enthusiasm and sense of responsibility. We discussed the comprehensive exam as a requirement for all incoming fourth year students as stated in the 2007 Retention Policy approved by the UE Board of Trustees.

We came up with an agreement that they will be responsible in disseminating the information to students and the ACLAT Department will re-schedule the exam from the orignal date of May 14, 2010 to May 28, 2010.

It Hurts To Say Goodbye...

Cheers to Dean Bello's continuous success!

Last April 27, 2010, BA Faculty members in coordination with the BA Faculty Club gave a send off party in honor of Dean Estelita D. Bello, the dean of the College of Business Administration for four years. The BA Faculty Room served as the venue for such occasion.

A party is supposed to be a happy get together of friends and people, but this send off party is one of a kind. The ambience is lonesome. No jolly faces from attendees, but only sadness and tears. They had hankies and tissues on their hands, wiping off their watery eyes. Everyone who worked closely with Dean Bello during her stay with the University of the East was given the chance to say something and share his/her experiences. Associate Dean Arce, CS Simbillo, DCs Pasilan, Lacerona, Aquino, and myself spoke our hearts out. We recalled many instances when Dean Bello became an instrument in changing ourselves for the better. She really touched the lives of many people in the university, particularly the faculty members and students.

Tears of Joy

Yesterday was a busy day as usual. Many students made inquiries regarding subjects that will be offered this summer 2010. They had a common concern -- to enroll this summer so as to remove their incomplete/failed grades in the previous semester.

My attention was caught by a girl sitting quietly. I looked at her and noticed that she seemed sad, and so I greeted her, "Joy, how are you?" Yes, I recognized her immediately as my former student when she was in her junior years. And to my surprise , tears started rolling down her cheeks.
