The James C. Meade Friends’ Lecture Series presents Cathy Whitlock “Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction” Noble Theater Thursday, February 23, 2012, 6:30 p.m. Join us Thursday, February 23, 2012, for a fascinating lecture by author and design journalist Cathy Whitlock, who will pay tribute to the unsung heroes of the movie business: production designers, art directors, and set decorators. While their work is often underappreciated, these “architects of illusion” work closely with the director and cinematographer to visualize and create believable, self-contained worlds within each film. As part of OKCMOA’s annual Oscar Tune-Up program, her lecture will also address this year’s Oscar race for Art Direction. Cathy Whitlock’s career as a book author, magazine writer, design marketer, lecturer and interior designer spans many directions. Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction (Harper Collins, November, 2010), represents the marriage of her two passions – design and the cinema. She is also the author of the book re-de-sign (Fairchild Books, 2009), a contributing writer for Traditional Home magazine and the Huffington Post, and features editor for [...]

From the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Big change in store for downtown ramps as westbound I-40 Crosstown traffic is switched Sunday The westbound I-40 Crosstown traffic switch is planned for Sunday, Feb. 19 and brings about a big change for downtown area ramps including the Robinson Ave. and Hudson Ave. ramps. Because all on-ramps to the existing westbound I-40 Crosstown close permanently at 6 a.m. Sunday, motorists are advised to use I-235, Sheridan Ave. and other local roads to access the downtown area during that time, if needed. For nearly 50 years, westbound I-40 Crosstown traffic has used Robinson Ave. as an exit and entrance to the Crosstown. Once traffic is switched to the new westbound I-40 lanes on Sunday, drivers will no longer be able to use the Robinson Ave. on-ramp as the Oklahoma Department of Transportation works to improve safety by eliminating weaving movements in the area. The Hudson Ave. on-ramp will also close permanently. The nearest on-ramps will be at Shields Blvd. and Western Ave. Access to I-40 from downtown or Bricktown events are encouraged to utilize [...]

From the little ones in your life. By Amanda Harmer, Education and Community Outreach Coordinator Here are just a few easy projects to do with children this Valentine’s Day: Love Bugs Materials Black poster board or construction paper Colored or decorative papers Paper doilies Scissors Elmer’s glue Oil pastels or construction paper crayons Wiggle eyes Optional Glitter glue Valentine’s stickers or foam stickers Begin by cutting out two circles from the black construction paper. The smaller circle will be the head of the bug, and the larger circle will be the body. Next, cut out 6 strips of paper about ½”-1” thick. These will become the bug’s legs. Glue three on each side of the bug’s body. Give your bug fun wiggle eyes, a little heart-shaped mouth, and even some antennae. Set aside to dry. Next, make your Valentine for the bug to hold. Think about the Valentines you made as a kid and use doilies, paper hearts, glitter glue, and oil pastels to write a sweet message. Finally, it’s time to make your bug hold your Valentine. Carefully [...]

BY Erika Katayama, Registrar, Oklahoma City Museum of Art Georgia O’Keeffe’s Calla Lily continues on the international European tour, Georgia O’Keeffe: Her Life and Work. The second venue for the exhibition is Munich, Germany at the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung. I traveled to Munich to oversee the unpacking and installation of the painting on behalf of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. The museum is situated in a bustling high-end shopping district in the heart of the old part of the city. Even though it was snowing heavily, the streets were crammed with people enjoying a day out. All of the store-fronts were elaborately decorated to entice customers, my favorite were the bakeries! While there, I was also able to sample some of the delicious regional cuisine, including currywurst! I think big sausage with curry-flavored ketchup sauce on it. The waitstaff at the restaurants all spoke English and were happy to recommend dishes for me to try. Munich is flanked by the River Isar, which has lovely trails and paths along it. The temperature dipped into the teens, but lots of dog-walkers and [...]

By Brian Hearn, film curator Waaaay back in early 2003 I was following the Oscar race noting how many nominees either hadn’t come to Oklahoma City at all or came and went too fast. So I invented “Oscar Tune-Up” as a program to enhance one’s enjoyment of the Oscar telecast. It’s always more fun to have seen the nominees in 24 categories, especially the more obscure ones. That year we screened several films that went on to take home a golden guy: Frida, Bowling for Columbine, Spirited Away, Nowhere in Africa, Adaptation, and the live action and animated short films. Audiences clearly loved it so we made it one of the cornerstones of our annual programming. A lot has changed in ten years. For one, Oscar night is one month earlier than it used to be. We’ve also seen a lot of tinkering with Oscar night in an effort to remain relevant in popular culture. While it’s been a mixed bag of experiments, one thing has not changed. It remains the biggest night in the movie business when art trumps [...]

by Brian Hearn, film curator The “New Frontier” section of Sundance “pushes the boundaries of storytelling and the moving image.” Consisting of both installation based work and feature length films there are always surprises to be found. Bestiaire is one such film that challenges the viewer to follow a series of long, beautifully composed shots of the residents of an exotic animal park. It begins in winter with tigers, zebras, ostriches, and the like rattling their cages despite the wordless care and feeding by their human handlers. It is unnerving watching these beautiful, noble creatures designed to run free, banging around in their confined spaces waiting for spring. Then it comes, sweet freedom! Elephants, water buffalo, hyenas, etc. move to outdoor spaces, but we are reminded that they remain captives of their human counterparts who interact with them on an otherwise equal basis. The film takes a rather gruesome detour to the taxidermy workshop where we see their craft in unflinching detail. (That sent people running for the exits!) I found it to be a strangely fascinating art form, though [...]

Dress in jeans, dress in cocktail attire, dress in costume appropriate to the theme (Royal Art this year) or dress in costume not appropriate to the theme – it’s all about having fun. The tastiest and most creative omelettes by some of the best chefs in town – eat as many as you want – other tasty treats as well. Lots of art to look at and, and dozens of people will go home as the winner of their favorites. We choose bands that are a big hit with every age group – very danceable for all.
