LaTrell Stokes, MSU-ES Extension Agent 4-H – Oktibbeha County will be conducting a couponing 101 workshop on March 18, 2014. The workshop will begin at 6 p.m. at the Oktibbeha County Extension Office, 106 Felix Long Drive, Starkville, MS. This workshop is Free to the public. Come get tips on starting, collecting, and saving. We will discuss saving on more than just groceries. Call 323-5918 to reserve your stop!

Shooting Sports!

Here are the practice dates and locations of the shooting sports program.
Shotgun
- Mondays at 4 p.m.

- Mondays starting February 17^th at 4 p.m.
-Location – Camp Seminole

Land Judging Training

There will be a Land Judging training held on Saturday February 16, 2013 starting at 10 a.m. on MSU Campus. If you are interested in attending. Contact Julie or myself by Monday, February 11^th. Neither Julie or myself will be able to attend this training due to family obligations.

Land Judging Contests

If you are interested in learning more about the soils in Mississippi call our office with your name and ages and we will call you when the first practices begin. We must register teams by February 4^th. The State Contest will be March 21, 2013. Location TBA.

All Star Applications & Scholarship

This is a great opportunity for 4-H’ers; To qualify for All-stars you must be the following:

16 years of age or older (as of Jan. 1)
active member for 3 years

If you are interested you must complete and submit a 4-H All Star Application. All

information is available to pick up at the Oktibbeha Co. 4-H Office and must be returned by March 1, 2013.

Junior Council

The next Junior Council will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2013 starting at 5:30 p.m. We will plan some summer activities.

Field and Stream Registration

Anyone planning on participating in the North Field and Stream Shooting Sports Contest in April must complete and return the following: Registration form, registration fee, Health Card and Code of Conduct Forms to the Extension Office. These are due in our office by April 1, 2013.

Make-Up Contest Day

I have scheduled a makeup day for all contests for April 2, 2013 from 1-5 p.m. at the Extension Office. If you cannot make one of the contests during Spring Break call to register (before March 6^th deadline) for makeup. If you cannot make either you will need to make arrangement with me to make up your contest.

Club Congress

The 2013 State 4-H Club Congress is just around the corner. This is for Senior 4-H members. The dates of congress are May 29-31, 2013 at MSU Campus. Cost has not been announced yet. The county will again pay for a part of this depending on the number of youth wishing to participate. You will be responsible for the remaining part. In order to go you must be active in Oktibbeha County 4-H and must have competed in the County Visual Presentation, Public Speaking, and/or County Judging Contest.

If you are unable to attend this after registration is paid you will be responsible for paying the FULL balance. Deadline to return congress registration form will be mid April 2013. Call for more information at 323-5918.

OFFICE CLOSING

Oktibbeha County Extension Service will be closed for Christmas Holidays starting December 23, 2013 through January 2, 2014. Our first day back at work will be January 3, 2014.

2014 WINTER CLASSIC HORSE SHOWS

Oktibbeha County’s Winter Classic Horse Show will be February 8, 2014 in Chickasaw County. Come support our horse kids and volunteers. You can now download the 4-H Winter Classic Horse Show bill from the website. You can also preregister for the shows on the website. Go to www.4hwinterclassic.com for all information and rule changes.

COUNTY CALENDARS

Oktibbeha County 4-H County Caledars will be available after January 4^th.

MS 4-H Volunteer Conference

The Mississippi 4-H Volunteer Leaders’ Annual Conference, sponsored by Mississippi State

University will be held February 28- March 1, 2014, in the Bost Extension Conference Center. Our theme this year is "MS 4-H Volunteers: Framing the Future." All delegates are asked to bring item(s) valued at a minimum of $25 for the Live Auction and Silent Auction fundraisers. The registration fee:

Full-time delegates -$85.00 (includes all workshops, meals, banquet, and annual membership)
Saturday only - $70
Friday Banquet Only - $25

Applications and money are due in our office by January 22, 2014. Applications are at our office. 4-H will reimburse part of registration after event based on the number attending.

Scholarships are available on first come first serve basis. Only three from our district will be awarded. Please send letter requesting this scholarship to Harvey Gordon, Box 9641, MS State, MS 39762.

SALVATION ARMY VOLUNTEERING

We will again this year ring the bell for Salvation Army. All other clubs will be ringing Saturday, November 30, 2013 from 9 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Wal-Mart in Starkville. I will be at home. So please make sure you are on time (if not early). The schedule is as follows:

CHRISTMAS PARADE

If you would like to assist with decorating the float for the Christmas Parade we will be decorating on Sunday December 1, 2013 starting at 2 p.m. The parade is December 2, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

HOLIDAY IDEAS WORKSHOP

There will be a Holiday Ideas Workshop held Tuesday December 10, 2013 from 2-5 p.m. We will make three or four holiday gift ideas for you to take home. Call to reserve your space today. Limited to 25 people. Call and sign up today. Deadline to register is December 5^th.

ATV Online Course – Help

We need each county to have at least 10 participants (can certainly involve more) to sign up for the ATV Safety E-Course by going to: http://www.atvsafety.org/ and have youth/adults register for the course. The course is age specific and participants do not have to complete the course at one time. By creating an account, this will allow participants to work through the course at their own pace. Parents can help younger youth but we would love for parents to sign up as well. When registering, be sure to check the box that reads: Check this box if you are registering for this course as part of a Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth or FFA Youth Program. This will give Mississippi 4-H Credit for participation.

We also need each county to have at least 5 (can have more) youth to play the Tread-Sylvania Game. They may do so by going to the following site: http://www.atv-youth.org/. The electronic game is another means of implementing ATV Safety to young people. This project needs to be completed by December 11, 2013.

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY EXTENSION OPEN HOUSE

Oktibbeha County Extension Service is planning an Open House for Monday, December 16, 2013 beginning at 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. . Please come share the day with us. This is FREE to the public. If you have any questions, call LaTrell or Julie at 323 5918.

Oktibbeha County Extension Office is a site that nonperishable food items can be dropped off for local food pantries. This is a great community service project.

Poultry Chain Project

It’s time again for the 4-H Poultry Chain Project!! Youth ages 8-18 are eligible to participate. You can choose to raise either Egg type or Meat type birds. If you are interested in participating please call Julie at the Oktibbeha Extension 323-5916 by April 15th! There will be a meeting about the Poultry Chain on April 15^that 5:30 p.m.

Poster Art Contest

Themes for the 2013 Poster Art Contest are; 4-H: The Green Promise and an Open Theme…this category allows 4-H’ers to create a poster and use their own theme. The size of the poster must be 14” X 22” (half sheet of poster board). More rules are available at the County Extension Office on this contest.

Dairy Poster

June is National Dairy Month. The 2013 Dairy Poster Contest Theme is "Dairy Packs Power". The poster must be 22 inches by 28 inches. Posters are due in the County Extension Office May 1, 2013. Expressive Arts Program

The annual Expressive Arts Program will be held on May 13-14, 2013 at the County 4-H Office. This is open to youth of all ages. Forms are available at the County Extension Office. Check-in is from 3-6 p.m. on May 13^th. Check-out is from 4-5 p.m. on May 14th.

BASEBALL RUN OUT

We will be participating in the MSU Baseball Run Out on May 16, 2013. All 4-H'ers will be admitted free (limited to 25); parents will have to buy a general admission ticket which is $5. We will be meeting and greeting the baseball team and players. we will also get to run on the field with them for the National Anthem. If anyone is interested in joining in doing this, please email me names. As of now we are only allowing two or three from each club to attend (free). Adults must pay.

National Conference Application Process

The following is the process for applying for National Conference for 2013:

Applicants must be senior 4-H (ages 16 through 18) members.
Complete Application Packet.
a. Mississippi 4-H National Conference Application Form

b. My 4-H Story (maximum of 4 pages)
c. Three Letters of Recommendations (2 from non-relative adult and one from Extension Agent signing the application)

Interviews will take place May 30th during 4-H Club Congress. (Note: Interviews times will be flexible)

The deadline to have all the above information into our office is April 25, 2013.

Gail Ballard’s Retirement Reception

Land Judging Training

The State 4-H Land Judging Contest will be held on March 21, 2013. To assist you and your teams in preparing for the State Contest, Dr. Billy Kingery have made arrangements with FFA to offer a joint training on Land Judging. The training will be held on February 16, 2013, at Mississippi State University. Even if you may not have a team that will be competing this year, this will be a great opportunity to enrich your knowledge and skills in land judging. As soon as the schedule is complete, I will send it to you. Mark your calendar and make plans to attend.

The mission of Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers, Inc.(MHV) is to strengthen families through education and community involvement. Anyone interested in improving family and community life may form a Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers club. MHV clubs usually have 10 to 20 members who participate in leader training classes, take part in public policy education and serve as community volunteer leaders. Members may participate in county, area and state programs.
Come to an MHV Interest Meeting on February 18, 2013 at 12 noon to learn more about this organization. Meeting will be at Oktibbeha County Extension Office located at 106 Felix Long Drive, Starkville, MS. For more information, contact our office at 323-5916.

Exhibit Days

The 2012 Oktibbeha County Exhibit Days is just around the corner. Booklets are ready to pick up. We will again have Exhibit Days at our office. We are limiting exhibits to 25 per person. You again must pre-register. NO EXHIBITS ACCEPTED after deadline. Schedule will be as following:

Monday, September 17, 2011 Check in - 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 – Judging and Viewing
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 – Check out – 2-5 p.m.

District Horse Meeting

The Northeast District Horse Show meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 6:30 P.M. at the Northeast District Office in Verona. Any volunteer can attend this meeting but only one (1) delegate from each county is allowed to vote. Contact Julie if you plan on attending.

2012 4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Training

4-H Shooting Sports Volunteer Leader Training Workshop will be held November 9-10, 2012. Workshop will be held at NE Extension Research Center in Verona and Whitetail Ridge in Blue Springs, MS. Participants must be at least 21 years of age in order to become a certified volunteer. More information will come later.

STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

AWARDS

Awards application will be ready to pick up September 4, 2012. DEADLINE to return Standard of Excellence, Spirit of 4-H, Rookie of the Year Awards, Outstanding Volunteer, and Outstanding Club applications is OCTOBER 1, 2012. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER this date. If you need an application call Joyce.

2012 AWARDS PROGRAM

The 2012 Awards Program will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2011 beginning at 6 p.m. We are currenting looking for a new location. Mark this on your calendar. Hope you can attend this event.

LIVESTOCK NEWS

Beef, Dairy Cattle, Sheep, Swine, and Goats…want to show? The ownership deadline for the 4-H Livestock Project is September 1, 2012. All nomination forms are due to the Extension Office by August 31, 2012. Market and Commercial Animal must be tagged prior to this date. Please call Julie White at 323-5916 to schedule an appointment. Also NEW exhibitors and youth who are now over 14 will need to schedule to have ethics training before State Fair in October. Julie will hold ethics training for other in November.

Also if you are 8-13 or 14-18 and are interested in Judging Dairy Cattle please contact Ms. Julie. Practices will start soon for contests in January and February.

4-H DAY AT MSU FOOTBALL GAME

4-H Day at MSU Football game is Saturday, October 20, 2012. This is the Middle Tennessee State Game (also Homecoming). Time TBA. 4-H will NOT be offering meal this year. They will be provided a place to tailgate. They will have pre game activities for all ages. Packages are as follows:

$15 – includes game ticket use of tailgate facilities
$5 – for shirt only (same on as last year)

If you would not to purchase tickets please contact our office. Forms and payment are due in our office NO LATER THAN October 1, 2012.

TOY DRIVE

We will be collecting toys (slightly used) for Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. They need books, trucks, balls, dolls, any toy for youth of all ages.

EXTENSION UPDATE

We will be trying a new format of newsletter next month. It will include several areas of Extension Programing. If you would like to put something in this letter let Julie know.

Poster Art Contest

The themes for the 2012 Poster Art Contest 4-H: The Green Revolution and an Open Theme…this category allows 4-H’ers to create a poster and use their own theme. The size of the poster must be 14” X 22” (half sheet of poster board). More rules are available at the County Extension Office on this contest. These are due in our office on May 14, 2012.

Tractor Supply and 4-H

The Spring Tractor Supply Paper Clover fundraiser will be held May 2-May 13. Customers at our local Tractor Supply can support 4-H by purchasing a paper clover for $1 at checkout. All funds raised will be donated to 4-H here in Starkville. Local clubs and 4-H members can also reap rewards from Tractor Supply with the new TSC Clover Card. Horse News

Don’t forget the County Horse show will be held May 12^th at MS Horsepark.

Expressive Arts Program

The annual Expressive Arts Program will be held on May 14-15, 2012 at the County 4-H Office. This is open to youth of all ages. Forms are available at the County Extension Office. Completed forms should be turned in on the first day of the program. Check-in is from 3-6 on May 14^th. Check-out is from 4-5 on May 15th.

Junior Robotics Camp

A Junior Robotics Camp for 4-H youth ages 8-13 years old will be held on MSU Campus July 8th-11^th. All 8 and 9 year-olds must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. The total cost of this 3-day camp is $250.00, which includes housing, meals, t-shirt, field trips, snacks, etc. (youth should not need extra spending money). Parents who wish to attend with their child will need to pay for their housing and meals ($125, this includes the restaurant meal, movie night, and field trips). We have 25 slots available.

Tuesday - June 5th - Junior Robotics Camp registration deadline
Tuesday - June 19th - All money for Junior Robotics Camp payment due (must be postmarked by this date)
July 8-11th - Junior Robotics Camp!

Project Achievement Day

Project Achievement Day is Wednesday, June 6, 2012 on the campus of ICC in Fulton, MS. If you are attending Project achievement Day you will need to register and complete forms (health card and parental release forms) no later than May 15, 2012. You must have competed in the county contest or make up to attend this.

Cloverleaf Exhibits – NEW CHANGE

Remember: Three-sided science fair project-type boards will NOT be allowed in the Mississippi 4-H Cloverleaf exhibit at the District 4-H Project Achievement Days. 4-H Cloverleaf exhibits should include :

a title sign displayed on top of or attached

to the front of the table

materials related to the project
table for displaying everything
NO live animals
must not occupy an area larger than 3ft x 3 ft.
4-H members are responsible for furnishing all materials and table
NO Electrical outlets exhibits

Senior/Volunteer Records

The deadline for Senior and Volunteer Records to be turned in to the County 4-H office is June 20, 2012. If you need forms, they are available at the county office.

Junior/Intermediate/Club Records

The deadline for Volunteer/Junior/Intermediate/

Club Records to be turned in to the County 4-H office is July 12, 2012. This will give us time to review them and make any needed changes. Remember story and pictures MUST be changed and be current. If you need forms, they are available at the county office.

Photography Workshop

There will be a photography workshop on July 10, 2012 from 9-12 at our office. Limited to 15 people. More information will come in next month’s letter.
