Old Guys Rule the Surf

Old Guys Rule has deep roots in surfing, so it's great to get back to those roots from time to time. We are excited to share an upcoming Southern California event that will give old guys an opportunity to rule the waves. The Senior Olympics Surf Contest will be held in Huntington Beach at the end of October. This event is open to surfers age 50 and over.

Information on judging found on http://www.hbcoa.org/senior_olympics.htm includes the following:

Judging Criteria:
"A surfer must execute the most radical controlled maneuvers in the critical section of a wave with speed and power throughout. The surfer who executes such maneuvers on the biggest and or best waves for the longest functional distance shall be given higher scores."

Judges Look For: Wave selection, maneuvers, fluidity and style.

We've got enough style, speed, power...bring on the waves.

Even though this event is more than two months away, we're already dreamin' of the smell of the board wax, the ocean spray in our face, and the feel of the board beneath our feet. The Smart Move at Old Guys Rule

Over at Old Guys Rule, we're feeling very "smart" these days. Especially as we launch our new collection featuring Albert Einstein. The collection will be available on our website tomorrow, August 19th. There are three great Old Guys Rule T-Shirts featuring Einstein and famous quotes. This collection is available exclusively online until September 1st.

The first shirt features Einstein on a motorcycle. It celebrates the energy that this amazing Old Guy brought to the world and his tireless pursuit of science and the development of his theory.

The second shirt in the collection, called “Surfstein” features Einstein in a way you have never seen him before. It's a Mystery, What's Next For Old Guys Rule

At Old Guys Rule, we are always thinking about what our customers might like to see next. We look at the feedback that our customers share with us and we also work together internally to come up with new ideas. We are really happy to share what you are going to see over the next several months.

We have a new face that will appear on the Old Guys Rule shirts later this month. It's pure "genius" to feature this guy. He's known for his Theory of Relativity and his shock of white hair...we are proud to feature Albert Einstein. Although, as always, there is an Old Guys Rule twist and you'll see Einstein in a new way.

Also, later this month, Old Guys Rule will be featured on two episodes of the Emmy winning HBO series True Blood. We feel pretty cool to appear...just goes to show, Old Guys Rule Hollywood (and everywhere, in our opinion). Yes, we know that's not a humble thing to say, but hey, we Rule.

There will be a few new characters featured in the coming months...one shirt will feature three funny guys and another will feature a different Duke. We don't want to give it away yet, but those are huge clues. We are also doing great things in our community and we will be honoring some Old Guys who are doing the same. We'll be sharing more about this very soon. Until then, keep ruling!

Old Guys Rule Founders Don and Robi Craig recently trekked to Northern Europe to visit new retailers in Sweden and the UK. Along the way, they were treated like royalty. Perhaps that’s because people in countries like these -- whose histories span millennia -- respect the wisdom of the ages like no others. And isn’t that what Old Guys Rule is all about – to celebrate one’s accomplishments and wear them as a “Badge of Honor”?

Don and Robi traveled the countryside, seaside towns and quaint villages, visiting with store owners and customers alike. They were overwhelmed by the friendly hospitality, signing posters and shirts and posing for photos with people in the stores and on the street. Humble as they are, the attention was affirming. Don and Robi created Old Guys Rule to honor those men who turned their life experiences into an opportunity to share their wisdom with new generations. To see their concept being accepted by so many cultures outside of the US was certainly a crowning achievement.

We’ll be posting more photos from their journey to Northern Europe soon. Stay tuned and enjoy the sites of Sweden and the UK. Don and Robi sure did.

This weekend marks the 31st US Senior Open, where more than 150 men over the age of 50 are competing to win cash, prizes and the title of Champion. The 2010 winner, Bernhard Langer, won nearly $500,000. Wish we could join in...

However, we know most of us will never play in this tournament and can forget that big payday, but we really enjoy watching. It inspires us to go out and hit a few balls. It reinforces that we are still competitive as we age. We can still practice and work at being better at our favorite sports, whether it's golf or something else. We're sure that Bernhard didn't win because he was sitting on the couch...so we're not doing that either.

It's summer, get out and enjoy it. Hit the course and then some balls, or hit the road and do what you love to do. (We shared what we love to do here.) You know what we think - Old Guys Rule...which means we get out there and we get it done. We LIVE our lives instead of watching it pass us by. How are you livin'? We'd love to know.

As the shirt says, "It don't mean a thing, if you ain't got that swing." We wish all of the Old Guys in the US Senior Open the best this weekend. And should this be your first time reading our posts, when we say "Old Guys", it is bestowing an honor for a life well spent.

Old Guys 10 Favorite Things to Do in the Summer

There’s a lot that we love about summer…so we thought we’d share some of our favorite things to do. Here are our top 10 (in no particular order – as Old Guys, we reserve the right to change our minds and our list whenever we want because we Rule and we can.)

 Take a cruise (no we don’t mean a boat, see photo above)

 Hit the beach – with or without a surfboard

 BBQ – where do you think the inspiration from the Grill Master shirt came from?

 Catch a movie the Old Guys way…at a Drive-In…takes us back in time

 Go to a baseball game – major league, minor league or little league

 Play a round of golf with our buddies

 Camp – nothing better than hangin’ out with your friends around a fire with a cold one

 Car Shows – there’s one just about every weekend in the summer

 Take the boat out on the lake, maybe do a little fishing

 Road Trip – preferably on two wheels going down the coast...if you haven’t ever, you should give it a try

Old Guys Rule Independence Day

A bit of history from one Old Guy to another - John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail after signing of the Declaration of Independence. He commented about how he thought the 4th of July would be celebrated, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival... It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” Maybe he’s the one who set the tone for how we continue to celebrate our independence.

This 4th of July weekend Americans will be celebrating in a variety of ways. Some will celebrate over a grill surrounded by friends and family, while others will enjoy catching some rays and some waves at the beach. Parades, baseball games, picnics and fireworks will be the norm.

For us, we may try to do everything above and then some, but we will remember no matter what we’re doing that we are grateful for our independence and to those who have sacrificed and served. It was 235 years ago that we declared our independence as a nation. However that fight for freedom began long before our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence and continues today. We hope to never take our freedom for granted. We won’t forget that it has come at a price.

We wish you and yours an incredible 4th of July however you choose to spend it. We hope it is fun and befitting of the Old Guys Rule state of mind.

January 17th, we will celebrate the birthday an incredible Old Guy. His name is synonomous with the most famous fights that have ever been fought…the Thrilla in Manilla, The Rumble in the Jungle, and The Fight of the Century. Muhammad Ali retired from his famed boxing career nearly 30 years ago.

His career consisted of 56 Wins (37 knockouts, 19 decisions), 5 Losses (4 decisions, 1 TKO), 0 Draws. He stood toe-to-toe and blow-to-blow with the greatest heavyweight boxers of his era, which is referred to as the Golden Age of Boxing. He was crowned the heavyweight champion of the world three times. He was the source of some great boxing moves like the “rope-a-dope” and the fastest footwork ever seen. His career was incredible…but for Ali, that was just the beginning.

Since his retirement, Ali has proven he wasn’t just a champ in the ring; he continues to be a champion out of the ring. He has made goodwill missions to many war-torn areas in the world, has become the champion of many worthy causes, including: delivering providing meals to the hungry, delivering food and medical supplies to many nations, regularly visiting soup kitchens and hospitals, contributing to several non-profits, contributing to Parkinsons research, advocating for legislation to protect children and also boxing reform legislation.

Even at 69 years old, Ali is still a heavy hitter. He is being a champion for those who need him. He has been impacted by Parkinson’s Disease since 1984, but even that hasn’t stopped him. As he once said, “It’s not bragging if you can back it up.” These days he doesn’t have to brag because we are happy to do it for him. We are proud to feature Muhammad Ali on several items.

A portion of the proceeds from the Old Guys Rule apparel featuring Muhammad Ali goes to the Muhammad Ali Center, whose mission is to preserve and share the legacy and ideals of Muhammad Ali, to promote respect, hope, and understanding, and to inspire adults and children everywhere to be as great as they can be.

Men Of A Certain Age = Aged to Perfection

A customer recently shared this post from Parade Magazine with us. It is an interview with the three actors in the TNT drama "Men of a Certain Age." We’ve caught the show a couple of times and can definitely relate to the characters in the show, but based on the article we can relate to real men behind those characters even more.

When asked about how he felt about the passing of the years, 48 year old Andre Braugher responded, “Time only flows in one direction, as far as we know. You have to go with it, because these are the only times we've got. These are the good times. No, I do not look as good as I did at 26, but guess what? I'm not 26.“ Who couldn’t appreciate that? We certainly do; we’ve earned every wrinkle, every gray hair and we’re proud of it. We’ve lived and it shows. There is no shame in that. We are “Aged to Perfection” and we like it.

Our favorite part of the interview is the question, “ What’s the best part about this stage in life?” It made us think. For us the best part is when we can do what we love, whether it is spending time with friends or family, riding our bikes down the open road, surfing a wave…What do you think? Celebrating an American Icon on His Birthday

Marion Robert Morrison was born May 26, 1907. Although he was born with the name Marion, to us he will always be John Wayne or "The Duke."

John Wayne was a man's man (a ladies man too at times). He was larger than life on the big screen and in person. He was always a straight shooter, and not just the kind from the movies he was famous for, that's what we loved about him. He told it like it was, did what he wanted and made no apologies. He inspired us to hitch up our bootstraps, fight for what we believed, and to get the girl.

So today, we tip our hats in honor of the man, the actor, and the American legend-- John Wayne.

Paul Newman's Beetle is "Winning" nearly 40 years after it was made

Before the actor Paul Newman became infatuated with auto racing on the set of the 1969 film “Winning,” he owned a red 1963 Volkswagen Beetle cabriolet. By all accounts, he loved the car. What Mr. Newman did not love, however — according to the car’s current owner — was being teased by the fellow actor and Porsche owner Robert Redford for the Beetle’s lackluster performance.

Modifying a Beetle for speed was, and still is, a straightforward affair, but Mr. Newman wanted something special. More importantly, he wanted something that would bury Mr. Redford’s Porsche.

What he created was more beast than bug. Now, his car is being offered for sale at $250,000 by a former acquaintance of the actor, Sam Contino, who took possession of it after retiring as an instructor at Chaffey College in Southern California.

Mr. Newman’s handlers had pressured the actor to rid himself of the car, which they believed to be far too dangerous, said Tom Contino, Mr. Contino’s son, when reached by telephone. After a chance meeting with his father, who was head of the college’s automotive technology program, Mr. Newman donated the car to the school, where it served as a promotional tool and teaching aid.

For the build, the actor enlisted Jerry Eisert, a manufacturer of racecars for the IndyCar series, to create the ultimate sleeper. The Beetle was wholly disassembled and rebuilt. A midmounted, 351-cubic-inch Ford V-8 was installed ahead of a 5-speed ZF gearbox, and the whole affair was ensconced in a lovely custom-made engine cover that may look familiar to anyone who has been a passenger in older, midengined water-ski boats.

The original bodywork was maintained, but the suspension and steering components were replaced with custom bits similar to those used on cars that Mr. Eisert built for the Indianapolis 500. Mr. Newman’s commitment to maintaining a stock look was nearly total. Details like drum brakes were maintained, though they were upgraded to finned aluminum units from General Motors. The actor even lobbied against the inclusion of a roll bar, though ultimately he acquiesced, said Tom Contino.

The finished car was featured in several magazines, all of which made subtle nods to the owner’s identity while never quite revealing it outright. According to Tom Contino, it was important for Mr. Newman that his Beetle maintained a degree of anonymity — the better to surprise and humiliate other drivers in stoplight drags and on canyon runs.

Upon his retirement, Tom Contino’s father acquired the car from Chaffey College and embarked on a five-year restoration project with his son. As reported recently by Inside Line, the car is for sale and listed at Oldbug.com, a vintage-Beetle enthusiast Web site.

Tom Contino admitted that the price may seem high “due to the association with Paul Newman,” but added that the quality of the build would not disappoint buyers. He also recounted that a period magazine had estimated the cost to build the car in the late 1960s at “somewhere upwards of $15,000,” which would equal almost $90,000 today.

We can certainly relate to that quote and yet, it isn’t just experiences and memories that we’ve had…it is the ones yet to come. The next ride on the open road, catching the next wave, the next ride in a hot rod, catching the next game or the next fish with a friend. Where you have been is part of the fabric of who you are; the “next” thing will be a part of who you will be. We’re never too old to do something new…that’s why Old Guys Rule.

Normally we are talking about all the great stuff that Old Guys are doing and how Old Guys Rule, but this week we thought it would be great to honor the moms out there. Mother’s Day is just around the corner and we want to say thanks to the moms who have made us who we are. We also wanted to share some ideas about what you can do for the ladies that you are honoring on Mother’s Day (in case you don’t have a plan.) We have also included 5 things not to do for Mother’s Day.

Here are 5 simple ideas that can make them happy and keep you out of trouble…

1. Send her to the spa – give her the pampering that she deserves and might not get for herself.

2. Get her something that is personalized – jewelry, picture frames…something with her name or children’s birthstones.

3. Photos make great gifts, now you can put photos on canvas or create photo blankets. Use a photo that she loves or take a new one.

4. If you are out of time or can’t choose, get her a gift card to her favorite store and pair it with a greeting card.

5. Last, but certainly not least, and in addition to any of the above…dinner at her favorite restaurant.

What not to do:

1. Make her cook her own Mother’s Day dinner.

2. Buy something at the gas station to give her.

3. Buy her a gift card to your favorite store…she’ll know you weren’t thinking of her.

4. Give her dandelions…unless you’re 5 years old, it isn’t cute.

5. Give her grief for any reason, Mother’s Day is only once a year, be extra nice.

I received this email from a high school friend of my wife. Seven couples went on a cruise over the Xmas holiday and decided to make it an "Old Guys Rule" event. She sent us this note and photos:

Hi Craigs,

We are back from our cruise. The "old guys" had a ball parading around the cruise ship in their OGL shirts! They took over the kids pirate ship for photos. Ralph has been wearing his shirt for more days than he should...like a baby with a blankie. I had to take it away and wash it before he knew it was gone!!! This is serious! He wears his OGL shirts proudly!

Hello again. I have been neglecting my blog page for awhile, but one of my resolutions for the new year is to try to be better about writing. Since my last blog, I have been busy expanding the reach of Old Guys Rule around the world. More specific information to follow once the "deal" has been inked. In January,
I traveled to two trade shows, Surf Expo in Florida and Outdoor Retailer in Utah. Both shows were very positive and successful for Old Guys Rule. The weather here in San Clemente has been incredible the last few weeks! The sunsets take my breath away. Hope you are enjoying a mild January, too. I will be back soon! The Old Guy
