The Poor are one of those bands that keeps coming up in passing mentions in the back channels of 1960s Los Angeles rock history, though relatively few people have heard their records. They're probably best known for the bigger bands that several members went on to after the Poor broke up, with Randy Meisner joining Poco and then the Eagles, and Allen Kemp and Pat Shanahan turning up in New Riders of the Purple Sage. In their brief time together, the Poor recorded four 1966-68 singles, none of them too exceptional or original, but all of them fairly typical Los Angeles harmony-oriented pop-rock with strong folk-rock and sunshine pop flavors.

The Poor formed from the ashes of the Soul Survivors (no relation to the more famous Philadelphia band of "Expressway to Your Heart" fame), a Colorado group who'd cut a couple of fair garage-pop singles in 1965 and 1966. Kemp and Shanahan had been in the Soul Survivors, and teamed up with Randy Meisner and Randy Naylor in Los Angeles to form the Poor. They had some big-name connections -- they were managed by Charlie Greene and Brian Stone, who also handled Sonny & Cher and the Buffalo Springfield; their first three singles were produced by Barry Friedman, who also worked with the Springfield, Kaleidoscope, Paul Butterfield, and others around that time; and while most of their singles had original material, they also covered early tunes by Tom Shipley and Michael Brewer, of Brewer & Shipley.

But none of their singles saw much action, with only Shipley's "She's Got the Time (She's Got the Changes)" (also done by Brewer & Shipley) making the charts, and then only bubbling under at #133 at that. After the Poor split, Meisner, Kemp, and Shanahan all put in time with Rick Nelson's backing group, the Stone Canyon Band, before landing in their most famous bands. All of the Poor's singles were compiled on the 2003 CD compilation The Poor, which also has the two Soul Survivors singles.

The Poor – The Poor :2003 (1966-1968 )

Although the Poor have been portrayed as a great lost band from the 1960s, the evidence on this short collection, which brings together the four singles they recorded between 1966 and 1968, as well as two singles released by the Soul Survivors, a nascent version of the band, between 1965 and 1966, suggests that the talent certainly was there, but unfortunately not the material. Randy Meisner (who went on to play a key role in both Poco and the Eagles), Pat Shanahan, and Allen Kemp (who both ended up in New Riders of the Purple Sage) were all members of the Poor, and the tracks here show definite potential, with beautiful, high harmonies that fall somewhere between the folk-rock feel of the Beau Brummels and the sunshine pop of the Association. All that was really missing in the mix were some quality songs, and it's telling that a pair of Shanahan compositions, "I Can't Stand to Be in Love with You" and the delicate "Snow Man," both recorded before the Poor existed, are two of the more memorable moments here. Kemp's "How Many Tears," which sounds like a watered-down version of the Byrds (circa Gene Clark), also has its moments, as does the mildly psychedelic "My Mind Goes High" and the ornate, orchestrated "Study in Motion No. 1" (drawn from the soundtrack for Hell's Angels on Wheels) that closes the disc. But nothing really lingers in the mind after this album ends, and while the potential of this band is clear, they ultimately didn't even come close to realizing it. By all accounts the Poor were an amazing live band, but their recorded output reveals a gifted but fairly generic group without a strong personal identity. Fans of late-'60s sunshine pop and the first stirrings of what would later become L.A.'s version of country-rock may well enjoy this set for its historical and archival value, however.

Rain is one of the many 1960s bands who never quite made it despite the strong pedigree of the members and enough industry interest to land them in the studio. The group was made up of members of the U.S.-based garage rock band the Lost Souls and English band the Undertakers. Their formation is a confusing tangle of lineups and groups that involves Brian Epstein, the Beatles, and Jackie Lomax, but ended with the band using the name Rain and playing a style that combined freakbeat-heavy and melodic Beatles-inspired songs that were buoyed with West Coast harmonies and a mix of Byrds-y jangle and Traffic-style experimentation. Their trips to the studio in late 1967/early 1968 never resulted in the release of an album, but decades afterward Grapefruit Records managed to get ahold of the master tapes and cleaned them up nicely on Tomorrow Never Comes: The NYC Sessions 1967-1968, adding some songs the band recorded after changing their name to the decidedly more psychedelic Gypsy Wizards Band.

Unlike many recordings that were lost to time, the Rain album was well worth digging up, and one can't help but wonder why some record label didn't take a chance on them. The reason is likely that music this melodic and chipper was out of step with the heavier sounds of 1968. Hearing it years later when such distinctions don't really matter, it's easy to fall in love with the gently trippy, deeply hooky, and occasionally hard-rocking songs on offer. Tracks like "You, You, You" or "No Deposit, No Return" have the loosely rocking feel of Moby Grape's best work, "You Can't Hide Your Love" comes across like the Who tackling the Hollies' songbook, and slower, more introspective cuts like "Sundrops" and "Midnight Blue" have a lovely soft-focus psychedelic tint. The trio are all fine players -- especially drummer Bugs Pemberton, who bashes away like Keith Moon's younger brother -- the production is pleasantly tight and trippy, and the band's harmonies are a treat. This is definitely one lost album that requires the "classic" appellation, and Grapefruit deserves a lot of praise for finally getting it out into the world. The Gypsy Wizards Band demos are a nice addition, but the band were much better at post-Beatles psychedelic pop than they were at orchestrated hippy-dippy tweeness. Skip those tracks and stick to the Rain album because this is an exciting archival find that fans of mid- to late-'60s pop need to seek out.

A '60s guitar hero who never seemed to be in the right place at the right time, Randy Holden has attracted a small but intense cult following for his work with various California groups in the '60s. After a couple of surf singles with the Fender IV that featured his inventive reverbed fretting, Holden joined the Sons of Adam, a Los Angeles band that cut three decent garage-psychedelic singles. Holden's characteristic Jeff Beck-like sustain can already be heard on these, the best known of which is "Feathered Fish," which was penned by Arthur Lee of Love (although Love never recorded it). When the Sons of Adam broke up, drummer Michael Stuart, in fact, joined Love, while Holden joined the underrated punky San Francisco psychedelic band the Other Half. His searing, suspended leads are the highlights of their sole album (they also recorded a few single-only songs).

Holden is actually best known for his short stint in San Francisco's Blue Cheer, which bridged psychedelia and heavy metal. Holden replaced Leigh Stephens, but left during the recording of the third Blue Cheer album, New! Improved! (he appears on side two only). Holden then recorded an extremely hard-to-find hard rock album as a solo artist, Population II, for the small Hobbit label in 1970 before drifting out of the music business. Most of his work, however, has been reissued sporadically by small labels in the '80s and '90s.

Randy Holden's career spans over 40 years and many different bands. The first band he played with were The Iridescence back in 1959, their material being mostly Blues.In the mid Sixties he joined The Fender IV (photo) and it was here that his guitar sound started to take shape. Then Randy joined the Sons Of Adam in 1966 and from here he formed The Other Half, a West Coast Garage Punk band who released 2 albums and 4 singles during the late 1960’s, their self titled album ending up more in psychedelic territory, but with Randy’s guitar style starting to shine through. When The Other Half split, Randy replaced Leigh Stephens in the infamous West Coast Proto Metal band Blue Cheer bringing with him his now legendary guitar style and immense amplification techniques which took Blue Cheer to levels of sound never thought possible before.

After recording one album with Blue Cheer (New Improved! 1969) Randy left to pursue his eternal quest for the ultimate in amplified guitar sound and teamed up with drummer Chris Lockheed for what became a legendary solo album, Population II (1970) and they toured America with this ‘nuclear powered’ band that featured 16 Sunn amps (this was just for Randy!!). The album never officially got released and Randy had some bad experiences with all his kit being stolen and he eventually turned his back on the music industry, unfortunately never really getting the recognition he deserved as a pioneering guitarist.In the 1990’s after many months of ‘pestering’ by an obsessive fan Randy picked up a guitar again and headed into the studio.In 1996 Randy released Guitar God, featuring former Blue Cheer drummer Paul Whaley on an unsuspecting public and it went down a storm. Recorded in 1997 and released in 2001 was the follow up, Guitar God 2001 with Randy Holden firmly back in the seat using an awesome custom ‘Glass’ guitar made for him as a present from his wife. Early Works '64 - '66 is a compilation album featuring the garage rock band The Sons of Adam and their earlier moniker The Fender IV, credited to guitarist Randy Holden. It was released in 1997 by the Japanese label Captain Trip Records. For years it would be the only collection of recordings for either project. Some recordings by The Sons of Adam were omitted from the collection for unknown reasons.

VA The Beginners Guide to French Pop (A Very Short History) 3 CD Set 1962-70

Well looky here, a new compilation of 60s Frenchness has come my way - the Beginner’s Guide To French Pop is touted as a “Triple CD set of the most thrilling 1960s French pop from the vaults of EMI full of classic yé- yé, Beatles-esque** hits & psych-pop all with a Gallic twist & compiled by Kid Loco”

What this means, is that there is a copy writer out there who really needs to work on breaking up their sentence structures; and, more enticingly, that French DJ and homme de l'électronique Kid Loco has been let loose in the French EMI archives, given free reign to plunder long deceased labels such as Odeon, Pathé Marconi, Trianon, Ducretet-Thomson, Columbia, and La Voix De Son Maître (His Master’s Voice, to you and me).

Now, the artwork/design really doesn't do it for me (it looks like the kind of thing you can only buy in petrol stations) and the sleeve notes are minimal, no detailed artist biographies here, instead Kid Loco provides us with a pithy one-liner about each track. What really hooked me was when I saw the tracklisting and only recognised 14 of the 45 artists, and even then not all of those individual tracks. Oh yeah and the fact that it was cheapcheapcheap - Here's my money, send me the CDs!

I wasn't expecting much of Disc One (1962-64). I was wrong. Mmmm, it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling with its jazzy Hammond grooves, finger-poppin strut-alongs, Beatnik rhythm'n'blues, galloping surf guitars, exotic percussion, and big band orchestral pop. Thems were more innocent times, but I'm still getting that thrill of dropping the needle onto a crisp vinyl biscuit, hearing the pop and crackle, and then the full-on rush of those naïvely produced sounds all crammed together into a couple of minutes of treble-y hysteria.

My faves? Les Chats Sauvages & Dick River's racey rock'n'roll surfer C'est Joli Comme; Curt Martin's Hammond instrumental re-working of Alice Dona's C'est Pas Prudent; Hector's Hong Kong, an as-unhinged-as-the-original, cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell On You; a sappy, pure pop with harpsichords ditty by Gérard Brent (who later played guitar for Jean-Pierre Massiera and Jacky Chalard!); and this moody, cinematic, comme John Barry, epic from Ken Lean.

Onto Disc Two (1965-66), and now we're swinging into more yé- yé territory: skipping past the lush orchestrations of Serge et Michele Arnaud's Les Papillons Noirs, Dani's pneumatic Ta Machine, and Christie Laume's just-on-the-right-side-of-out-of-tune L'Adorable Femme Des Neiges, you'll find some swoonsome orchestral pop and soulful big band belters, a dose of dark, sitar drenched psyché-rock, a couple of Northern Soul-style floor fillers, and even some Lee Hazlewood-esque baroque pop.

I got a bit foamy at the mouth over Les Ambitieux (who later became Les 5 Gentlemen) - an ultra-urgent beat-group calling everyone to DANSE! DANSE! DANSE! DANSE!; Ken Lean (again!) with some space-age easy-listening from WAYYY OUT; Dick Rivers (on his own this time) and coming over all dark and exotic with a bombastic sitar-psych dirge; Jennifer's John Barry-style spy-flick torch song; Regis Barly's Monsieur Qui Sait Tout - which sounds like it came from an amphetamine-fuelled Lee Hazlewood studio session; and best of all, this brassy Northern Soul femme-pop smasher, with those archetypal Gallic cascading bass runs and fuzz guitar licks all over it:

So, what did we learn? 'Beginner's Guide...' is maybe a bit of a misnomer. The budget price is sure to attract a few newcomers to the genre, but much of the music probably isn't immediate enough to hook a casual ear and make them want to dig deeper into the realm of vintage French Pop. 'Intermediate' or 'advanced level' are undoubtedly less catchy, but perhaps more accurate

Novices looking to dabble in the wonderful world of yé- yé would get a much better start with the 'best of' double CD Pop à Paris: Psyché Rock et Mini-Jupes or the more Femme-centric C'est Chic: French Girl Singers of the 1960s.
