What is Fête de la Musique?

Details of this event at the Old Museum will be published here later in the year.

Fête de la Musique is the largest international live music event in the world! Developed by the French Government in 1982, Fête is held in 450 cities across the globe on the very same day each year – 21 June. The aim of the event is to make music everywhere, to celebrate music and to expose as many people to music as possible.

An International Charter is the common link for more than 110 countries that participate in this music event. Musicians and venues donate their time for free, supported by a small army of volunteers, all in the spirit of making and celebrating music.

Now in its fifth year, Fête de la Musique Brisbane provides a performance platform for all people who love making music: whether a professional musician who has been playing for years or an aspiring performer who is looking for a chance to try out their skills.

In 2011, a choir and percussion group belted out tunes on the Goodwill Bridge, a West End hair salon threw a late night party, rock bands performed in galleries, in a children’s hospital and in malls. The Old Museum hosted a picnic lunch with live music, school children took over the State Library of Queensland, musicians performed on buses, CityCats and train stations, and waltzed down the aisles of churches and cathedrals, and late night valley venues rocked out – all in the name of making music everywhere!

Please register as an artist at FETE DE LA MUSIQUE website before April 21st

Tim Freedman’s Fireside Chat will be an evening of grand pianos, sweet melodies and a few pointed opinions. Already renowned as a raconteur between songs, this year Tim will link the tunes together with some extended yarns such as’How I learned to stop worrying and hate Triple J’ and ‘Why did Caroline Overington called my father a Jewish accountant’

Tim Freedman is a singer/songwriter from Sydney, best known as the lead singer of The Whitlams, an ARIA Group of the Year with a string of gold & multi-platinum albums. His songs of charming well-crafted cynicism can sound as if Randy Newman had joined Crowded House.

His first themed solo tour in 2005 coincided with the launch of the DVD ‘The Whitlams Years 1992 – 2004′ and told the story of the band’s early days. His second, which culminated in six-night run at the Vanguard in Sydney in 2009 grouped his songs from across the albums according to which girlfriend they were written about.
It is no surprise that Tim’s solo shows have become as popular as his band shows because The Whitlams’ success has always been about the emotional clout of his songs, which is laid bare when the rock adornments are removed.

The last few years saw Tim play The Whitlams’ “Best of” with every state orchestra around the country including seven nights with the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House. His 1997 album “Eternal Nightcap” was recently voted the No. 17 best Australian Album of all time on his favourite radio station JJJ.

Late last year Tim released his solo debut ‘Australian Idle’ and toured with his new band’The Idle’. The album is an unabashedly joyful 70′s piano-pop outing, and the first single, a remake of Billy Field’s ‘You Weren’t in Love With Me’, is enjoying extensive airplay nationally.
Cine-Retro Film Society’s big screen evenings will transport you to a bygone era in picture-going!
This time of narrative sound films from the 1920′s to the 1950′s was a world of atmosphere,
fantasy, glamour and intrigue – an age of screen heroes and heroines that were idolized by millions.
This was a period of a gargantuan volume of production particularly in America and Britain,
when cinema was king as an entertainment medium.
The Society was established in early 2003 screening in Rosalie Hall.
We commenced evenings in our present venue – The Old Museum Building – in January 2005
We aim to foster an appreciation of western narrative film in presenting this genre in it’s original big screen format
in an atmosphere that is fun, relaxed and friendly.

Click here to find out how to attend our evenings

Director – Vincente Minnelli
Cast – Judy Garland, Mary Astor, Margaret O’Brien, Lucille Bremer.

Filmed in eye popping Technicolor, and a solid-gold example of the lavishnes of MGM’s production standards. Set in the year leading up to the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair, we follow the four Smith girls and their lives and loves prior to an imminent and permant move to New York.

JON GOMM AUSTRALIAN TOUR BIOGRAPHY ….

Doors 8pm
First act: 8.30 – 9.00
Second act: 9.15 – 10.30

Jon Gomm (U.K.) is one of the world’s most gifted and inspirational guitar players. A singer-songwriter with an incredible, almost superhuman, virtuoso acoustic guitar style, where he uses one guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time. The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting however, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

His live shows combine deeply personal performances and a natural wit, with a once-seen-never-forgotten two-handed guitar style, both physical and complex, producing sounds people can barely believe are coming from a humble acoustic guitar.

Jon first laid his hands on a guitar at the age of two (actually it was a ukulele – his parents couldn’t find a guitar small enough). He wrote his first song at the age of six, and was soon accompanying his father, a music critic, to gigs in his hometown of Blackpool. Touring musicians would often stay at the Gomm household on the understanding Jon would get a guitar lesson, meaning he had one-to-one instruction from such blues legends as Walter Trout and Bob Brozman. Jon’s videos are watched by hundreds of thousands and his home-recorded debut album “Hypertension” sold over ten thousand copies with no industry backing.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the wonder and genius of this one man symphony. Supporting Jon on his Aussie tour is local synth whiz and singer Andy Sorenson. Andy’s rock influenced piano and vocal style are showcased in his new solo performances that heavily feature ambient vocal effects and synthesizer loops, organically built up throughout the show. This is going to be a night to remember!

Having just wrapped up a triumphant come-back tour with Sebadoh in September, one of the most prolific and influential songwriters of his generation Lou Barlow returns to Australia in solo mode this April. A founding member of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, two of the most acclaimed rock bands of the late 80s / early 90s, Lou is considered a pioneer of the lo-fi movement.

After parting ways with Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, Barlow turned his attention to side project Sebadoh and by 1993 had released six records and earned a devoted cult following. In 1994 Barlow formed Folk Implosion which stemmed his biggest commercial hit to date, a song written for the Kids soundtrack titled ‘Natural One’. In 2005, Barlow reunited with Dinosaur Jr. who have since released and reissued several albums and toured the world extensively.

In addition to his band involvement, Lou is a respected solo performer in his own right. He has released two records, Emoh and Goodnight Unknown, allowing him room to explore his introspective folk rock roots.

Accompanied only by his guitar, Lou Barlow will deliver intimate performances to audiences in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth

Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen are touring various dates in Australia in March this year.

Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen have had a lasting musical friendship spanning over forty- five years, since their first meeting in Los Angeles during the early folk and bluegrass movement.

In the summer of 1964, Hillman put down his mandolin after being recruited to play electric bass for a new band, The Byrds. Through various Number One hit songs such as Mr. Tambourine Man and Turn! Turn! Turn!, The Byrds established themselves as a cornerstone in the new cultural and musical movement of the Sixties.
Herb Pedersen continued his career in bluegrass, working with the incomparable Flatt and Scruggs, among others. In 1967, Hillman established himself as a songwriter with his first song, Time Between, noted by many as being the first country-rock song. After his tenure with The Byrds, Hillman, along with Gram Parsons, formed The Flying Burrito Brothers, now looked upon as the forerunners of the alternative country-rock style.

From The Flying Burrito Brothers to Manassas and then on to Souther–Hillman–Furay, Chris Hillman continued to develop as a singer and songwriter. In the early 1980s, Hillman reunited with Herb Pedersen and, along with John Jorgenson, formed the critically acclaimed Desert Rose Band. The Desert Rose Band enjoyed many Number One country singles throughout the decade, including One Step Forward, Summer Wind, and He’s Back and I’m Blue. By the mid-nineties, Hillman and Pedersen began performing as an acoustic duo and have recorded several successful albums together. Their latest record, “At Edward’s Barn,” continues their long-running love for the music they embraced so passionately years ago.
In 1991 Chris Hillman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Byrds, and has received many accolades for his songwriting. Herb Pedersen was the number one session singer and instrumentalist in the Los Angeles area for decades, performing on many notable artists’ albums. The Desert Rose Band, fronted by Chris, Herb and John Jorgenson, was honored by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association as “Best Vocal Band.”

The Blanks’ unique original
show appeals to fans of “Scrubs” but just as equally to fans of the TV show
“Glee,” The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges, and Monty Python

News flash: A
cappella is hip! Seriously, there’s a growing interest in a cappella music that
has crossed over to the MySpace/Facebook generation. It has officially become
cool to be in an a cappella band! There are groups springing up on college
campuses across the country, many inspired by The Blanks. Leading this pack of
cool is a quartet of friends, The Blanks, who appear on the worldwide
syndicated television show Scrubs as “Ted’s Band.” In a case of life
imitating art (or is it art imitating life?), the group was written into the
script as a quartet of friends who like to sing a cappella music. Bizarre, huh?
Group member Sam Lloyd played the recurring role of character “Ted Buckland” on
all nine seasons of Scrubs on
NBC and later ABC, now airing on Comedy Central, TV Land, WGN, and a
host of other local/regional channels just in the US. The show is on several times a day everywhere
in the US, giving the Blanks a constant boob tube presence. The kids like it.
Their parents like it. Sam is joined by Paul F. Perry, George Miserlis and
Philip McNiven. In 2004, the Blanks released their debut CD, “Riding the
Wave” (Parody Records). In 2008 they began touring. In 2008 they also made
T-shirts.

Based in Los
Angeles, The Blanks perform and sing family‐friendly (cool) entertainment with
plenty of (hip) musical and sketch comedy. They sing a cappella versions of
popular TV show theme songs ranging from “Charles In Charge” to “Six Million
Dollar Man,” and commercial jingles like “By Mennen.” They’ve put words to
songs without lyrics, such as the “Good Old Days,” the theme from The Little
Rascals. The only instruments you’ll find on stage are talking toys ‐
that’s right, four grown men who still play with action figures. Not ones to
rest on their laurels nor teeter on the edge of rebellion and artistic bravado
with their choice of deodorant commercials, the Blanks wrote some original
numbers that sound like songs even they might want to cover! You haven’t seen anything quite like it
before. They love to sing, entertain and make people laugh, so their shows
include skits, antics, choreography (the kind a 5-year old could memorize), talking
toys as lead singers, and costume changes.

A note on the costume changes: they’re not Cher, and they’re not Madonna.
Because… They’re men! Men who sing. Men who dance. Men who’ll make the milk
you’re drinking spray right out your nose with a funny glance.

Come see them live and you’ll be in for a night of laughs, songs and their
version of entertainment for any age.
