This shot is of Oliver Avenue between Smithfield and Wood taken 05-20-1948. The block is mostly covered by the backside of the First Presbyterian Church that houses the top notch eatery Franktuary in its basement.

I can't seem to find a date for this delightful picture of Forbes Field from above. Little info could be scraped from the faded stamp on the back of the photo. All that could be discerned was that the photo came from the Carnegie, and was most likely purchased at some point in the early to mid eighties.

As far as the picture goes, I'm most fascinated by the densely packed parking lot at the bottom of the shot. Assuming those are cars of the game's attendees, how long do you think it would free the central cars after the game?

Went to the buccos game last night and witnessed not only a 7-2 loss, but also the clinching on the Pirates' record breaking 18th consecutive losing season. To add some extra fun to the situation, I was at the game with my cousin that was in town partly to visit Carnegie Mellon. That's right folks, he was not yet born the last time the Pirates had a winning season.

How many 1990-2009 to opening day starting Pirates can you name?

New Granada Face-Lift underway

One of the lead pieces today in the Trib was regarding the first steps of returning the historic New Granada Theater back to its old Glory. As the piece states no one is really sure what the final project will come out looking like (and given it's 10 year time frame, what does it really matter at this point?), but it is very nice to know they aren't knocking the place down.

Here's a picture along Centre in the Hill district from 1954. Notice the New Granada Theater toting that they have air conditioning. Needless to say this corner was in a lot better shape back then than it is now.

Here's a shot of Forbes Ave (Forbes St. at the time) from 1952. It looks into town, toward the courthouse/old jail. These days you can also see Oxford center (view below). The building on the left no longer exists, all that remains these days is a retaining wall. Look closely on the window of the building to the left, it appears to say .....Trouser Co. What a tremendous and forgotten word.
