There are a few things to watch out when you want to drill holes in the wall to hang pictures or whatever things that need to be hung. Taking these precautions to prevent something going wrong before drilling any holes in the wall will save you a lot of heartaches and money. This is especially so when drilling holes in our bathroom wall.

Bet The Right Kind Of Drill Bits

Assuming you are a DIY buff, you would already have bought yourself an electric hand drill. Now you have to understand the the different kinds of drill bits used for different materials. You cannot use one kind of drill bit for everything so it is wise to buy a few common sizes of each.

Drill Bits For Drilling Metal

These drill bits are made for drilling steel and iron only. You can differentiate these drill bit by the cutting edge or the tip of the drill bit which is slightly tapered in the opposite direction.

Drill Bit For Drilling Wood

Drill bits for drilling wood is easily recognizable as they have a sharp tip which represents a screw. You can only use these drill bits for wooden materials or materials that are similar to wood like asbestos, chipboard, etc. Never use a wood drill bit to rill metal.

Drill Bits For Concrete Walls

Drill bits for concrete walls are not as sharp as those used for drilling wood or metal. In Fact, there kind of drill bits are actually made to be blunt. The tip looks a little bit like a blunted spear as these bits are designed to scrap instead of cutting

What Precautions To Take When Drilling Holes In The Wall

First and foremost, we must be very sure there is nothing embedded or concealed under the cement or concrete wall that we are about to drill. Most common case are concealed electrical wirings and plumbing.

If you have a tracking device, use it to check or anything under the cement. If you don’t, then use your common sense and folow these rules.

Never drill above or near any Electrical outlets like sockets, switches or panels. You can’t be sure where the wires are coming from but there will be wires running to these outlets.

In the bathroom, never drill anywhere near a water outlet like a tap, basin or a toilet flush. Look at the way the outlets are installed and try to imagine where and how to pipes are laid before drilling.

If in doubt, always ask your electrician or your plumber for advise. If you drill blindly and you hit a live hot wire, the consequences can be quite serious.

How To Drill Holes On The Cement Wall

After making sure everything is okay drilling the hole is the easy part, Just make sure the size of the bit is the right one and you can start drilling away like the guy in the video.

How To Insert A Screw After Drilling The Hole

After drilling the hole, you will naturally want to insert a screw into the hole. To get the screw secured to the wall, you will need some wall plugs which can be bought in all DIY outlets. These comes in different sizes and colors so if you are not sure of the size to buy, just tell the shop assistant the size of the bots you are using and they will get the appropriate ones for you.

However, simple as it seems, there are still many who do not have a hint on how to install the wires to a 3 pin plug correctly.

The most common mistake is connecting the live wire to the earth terminal. Needless to say, when this happens and when the plug is put in use, it will trigger the circuit breaker to trip and cause a temporary blackout in the house.

I think I have written briefly on the correct way to install the wires in for a 3 pin plug sometime ago. I feel it will be good to refresh on this since there are still so mnay who does not know how.

This time, instead of me explaining with pictures and all, I have found a video that explains very clearly the correct way to install the wires for a normal 3 pin plug.

Ceiling fans have come a long way. From the humongous wrought iron fans that weighs a ton, to the lighter version after that, ceiling fans these days serves not only to cool down our homes, it also serves as a decorative item that make our home more attractive. Instead of the plain white ceiling fan suspended from the ceiling, we have a very fancy looking fan with lights and all.

How To Choose A Decorative Ceiling Fans

As house designs gets more modern and house owners gets more sophisticated about the designs of their living quarters, ceiling fan manufacturers have no choice but to keep up with times. Unlike yesteryears when the ceiling of the house was just sheets of asbestos to block out the heat, house ceilings these days forms a important part of the interior design of a house.

When choosing a decorative ceiling fan, you will have to take into account the design of your homes and the type of ceiling you have. Simply buying the most fanciful looking fan does not mean the house will look better. Many a times, it will look out of place if the looks and color of the fan does not blend in well with the overall design.

You will also need to know the area of the room where the ceiling fan is intended. If the area is too large, you will need a fan which comes with wider wings. Else, those sitting further away from the fan will not get to enjoy the breeze.

Of course then, take quality into account. The price might be a little bit higher, bit a good quality ceiling fan will normally last a lifetime unless you decide to upgrade.

How To Install A Decorative Ceiling Fan

Installing a fancy decorative fan takes a little bit more work than a normal ceiling fan. That’s because these decorative fans almost always comes with different light fittings attached to the fan. There will be some extra wirings within the fan for these lights.

However, the good news is, your existing ceiling fan point can still be used and there is no need to install new wirings if you decide to replace your old and plain looking fan with a decorative one.

Because of the way the decorative fans are built, the suspension brackets will be different and you might need to drill new holes in the ceiling to have them fixed. That is about the most difficult part. Once the brackets are up and firmly tightened, installing the decorative fan will not defer much from a normal fan.

This Video below will give you a rough idea on what to expect if you decide to install a decorative ceiling fan by yourself.

The 3 pin plug is one of the most successful electrical item ever to be invented. The design and usages of the 3 pin plug has been the same for as long as I can remember. No one has came forward to improve or innovate on the design simply because it is as practical as it can be and it has became an accepted fact that there is no more room for improvement for the 3 pin plug.

The Improved 3 Pin Plug

However, the advancement of technology has made the 3 pin plug a dinosaur. No longer is the plug used only in the house. People travel with gadgets and appliances that needs the 3 pin plug to be carried along. The present and trusted design proved to be quite obstructive for frequent travellers. Thus the need for a new and improved design for the 3 pin plug.

A 3 Pin Plug That Can be Folded Like A Piece Of Paper

I caught this video about a very new and innovative design for this favourite household item. It is so practical that I think the inventor is going to make billions with this invention when this fold-able 3 pin plug hits the market.

Check out this video.

Many of you would have seen cases where the switch sockets or the plug tops melts like as though it has been burnt or roasted over a fire. Coincidentally. the melted parts are always the right terminal, be it the switch socket or the plug top. There is a logical reason for this to happen to make those switch sockets and plug tops melt like that.

The Switch Sockets And Plug Tops Melts Due To Overheating Caused By Overloading

A Plug With A Melted Pin Caused By Overloading

There are two reasons as to why a switch socket and a plug melts.

Due to the heat caused by overloading the capacity that the sockets and the plugs are made to withstand.

The sockets and plugs are not manufactured to specification

Overloading

The normal domestic switch sockets are designed to withstand a electricity load of 15 to 20 amps. Whenever any equipment or apparatus exceeds that load, the safety fuse inside the plug top must blow off thus cutting off the electricity supply to that particular equipment. This is to prevent any accidents happening.

Trouble starts when the user tries to outsmart what has been specified by experts and use a fuse that can withstand a higher load. Most common practice is to add a extra strand of fuse wire to the fuse thus increasing the capacity the fuse can take.

When an apparatus has a load that exceeds what the sockets and the plugs are made for and since the fuse can now take the load, the sockets and the plug pins starts to heat up instead of the fuse blowing.

After prolonged use, the heat generated will be so great that the switch sockets and the plugs gets roasted and melts.

Using too many equipments simultaneously can overload the Sockets

Not Manufactured To Specification

Switch Sockets and plug tops are designed to withstand a certain current load. Thus the materials used to manufacture these electrical parts must meet the standard set and approved by the Electrical Board.

However, many outlets and consumers would rather buy the cheaper ones that has no approval stamps. These cheap sockets and plugs always do not conform to safety specifications. The copper strips and bars are often thinner and slimmer than the approved ones. When this sockets are used they heat up very much faster causing them the melt even when they are not overloaded.

This cut down in material saves the manufacturer a lot in cost thus they can afford to sell them cheaply. They however are not concerned about the safety of the consumer.

How To Prevent Switch Sockets And Plug Tops From Melting

Common sense will prevent a lot of accidents happening in the house.

One, Always remember NOT to overload the Sockets and the Plugs by using too many equipment with one socket at the same time. This is especially important with power hungry utensils like and oven, a grill cooker or a hot iron. Use separate sockets for each of these equipment to prevent any of them getting overloaded.

Two, NEVER try to make the provided safety blow out fuse take more load than it is designed to be. Let the fuse do it’s work. If a fuse blows, it serves as a warning that you are overloading the circuit and it is time for you to stop before any mishaps happens.

Three, NEVER be penny wise and pound foolish by buying switch sockets and plugs that are not manufactured according to safety specifications.

Use your common sense and all the switch sockets and plug in your house will never melt again.

An important part of the household fluorescent light is the starter. It is the small cylindrical cartridge like item you see sticking out from the side of a fluorescent light casing. When you switch on the light, you will notice the starter flickering a few times before the fluorescent light tube lights up. Problem starts when the starter flickers wildly but the light tube refuses to light up.

How A Fluorescent Light Starter Works

A fluorescent light starter is in simple terms, just a heat sensitive switch that is built to switch on and off at a very fast pace. The only purpose of the starter is to kick-start the light in the initial lighting up phase. If you refer to the wiring diagram of the fluorescent light, you will notice that the starter is located in between the wire connecting to both end terminals of the tube.

What happens is when electricity travels through the starter, it will pass current to the tube, which in turn charges up the filaments in the tube to provide the power to light up the gases in the tube.

Once this is accomplished , the starter contacts will open and will switch itself off due to the heat it has generated. After that, the starter’s job is done and it stays there until the next time you want to switch on the light again. Of course, all this happens in seconds. So in practice, you can actually remove the starter once the fluorescent light has lighted up and it will stay lit up without any problems.

You only need the starter to start up your fluorescent light.

Read this to understand the details of how the fluorescent starter works.

Why The Fluorescent Light Starter Flickers Wildly

As said, the fluorescent light starter is just a simple heat sensitive switch that opens and closes by itself. When it is cold, the contacts opens and when it is hot, the filaments inside the starter expands and the circuit opens. The flickers you see is the sparking due to this opening and closing of the filament contacts.

Under normal circumstances when the starter is in good condition which means the contacts inside the starter is still good, all it takes is a few sparks and the tube will be lighted up. The starter then goes dormant.

However, after prolonged use, the filament contacts weakens and it starts to lose it’s initial power. That is when even after flickering for a long time, the fluorescent light does not seem to be able to light up.

When the fluorescent light starter flickers wildly but the fluorescent light do not light up,, it is time to replace the starter.

How To Replace The Fluorescent Light Starter

Replacing the fluorescent light starter is very simple and straightforward that even a housewife can do it. All you need is a ladder tall enough to reach the starter and of curse a spare starter.

Get a good grip of the existing starter, twist it anti clockwise for half a turn and the faulty starter should dislodge itself from the starter holder.

Put the new starter in place and twist half a turn clockwise. You should hear a dull click when the starter locks into place.

Switch on the light and test out the new starter. The starter should flicker only once or twice before the lights up.

A factor that worries many users of fluorescent lights is the ballast getting very hot after a few minutes of use. The temperature of the ballast can reach a level so hot that you cannot even touch it with your naked hands. Thus, lots of house owners worry that the heat generated from the fluorescent light ballast might cause a fire, damaging their homes. This is especially true when the lights are fitted closely against a wooden ceiling. The heat generated by the fluorescent light ballast can actually roast the wooden structure after prolonged use.

Why Is The Fluorescent Light Ballast So Hot

The ballast gets heated up due the process where the ballast has to generate power to make the light tube lit up. Unlike the incandescent light bulb which gets its light from heating up the filament in the bulb, the light from the fluorescent light tubes comes from the gas that is filled inside the tube. These gases has to be electrically charged to emit the light.

This electrical charges comes from the electrodes present at both ends of the fluorescent tube which is in turn connected to the ballast. The ballast will then have to generate power to electrically charge up the electrodes in the tube. This generation of power is what causes the ballast to heat up and become so hot.

Here is a more detailed explanation as to why the ballast of a florescent light gets so hot.

How To Avoid The Heat From The Fluorescent Light Ballast From Damaging Your House

Wooden houses or houses with a wooden ceiling should best refrain from using lights that needs a ballast. It can be a fire hazard, especially if the houses are old and the wooden structure used are aged and really dried to the core. These wood catches fire quite easily.

However, fluorescent lights are the most popular way of lighting up a house because it is the the most affordable and economical. So most house owners prefers to keep with fluorescent lights even though they might pose a small danger. The are some ways to prevent mishaps from happening.

Use a Spacer When Installing A Fluorescent Light.

Instead of installing the fluorescent light flushed against the wooden ceiling, use a spacer to create a breathing space between the fluorescent light and the ceiling. This method is simple and cost free. All you have to do is to use a longer screws when installing the fluorescent light. You can use any material for the spacers. A thickness of about 1/2 an inch should be more than enough to create the much needed space between the light and the wooden ceiling.

Use Suspension Rods When Installing The Fluorescent Light

Florescent lights do comes with suspension rods if you ask for them when you are buying your fluorescent lights. These rods are factory made to fit the lights perfectly and it comes in different lengths and looks. Using suspension rods not only makes the fluorescent light more attractive it also makes them safer to use as now the lights are completely suspended away from the ceiling.

Check Your Fluorescent Lights Ballast Periodically To Prevent Damage

It is advisable to open up your fluorescent light to check for any damage caused by the heat of the ballast. A very common problem are the insulation of the wires that runs too close to the ballast getting brittle because of the prolonged heat.

To prevent this from happening again, you can replace the wires and the cover them with a heat resistance sleeve. Some better quality fluorescent lights comes with these sleeves installed by default because they realize the problems which can occur is fluorescent light ballast gets too hot.

Many will not know this, but there is a difference between a two gang switch and a two way switch. Both might look somewhat similar, but a two gang switch operates differently from a 2 way switch. In most household, what we have are normally “gang” switches and not “way” switches. In short, a “gang” switch, be it one gang, two gang, three gang or even four gang are the most common household switches. Two way switches are used in specified locations only.

The Two Gang Switch

The two gang switch, as the name suggest is a normal light switch with 2 normal looking switches lined up side by side. Both these are ordinary switches used to switch a light on and off, except in this case, there are two switches for 2 different light points.

A Typical Looking Two Gang Switch

The Two Way Switch

A two way switch on the other hand consist of only one “gang” of more specifically one single switch. However, two way switches works in pairs. That is to say, you need a pair of two way switch to make the the switches do it’s work properly.

The two separate 2 way switches are located in different locations of a building like a long hallway, a corridor, a staircase or even a shared bathroom or toilet.

The two way switch lets you switch on the light at one end and them switch it off at the other end. For example, when you want to go up or down the stairs at night, you would want to switch on the staircase lights before doing so. Once you have reached the upper or lower floor, you would want to switch off the staircase lights to save some electricity. That’s where two switches are very useful.

How To Differentiate Between A Two Way Switch And A Two Gang Switch

A two gang switch has 2 switch tumblers while the 2 way switch has only one. That is the most obvious difference. On the other hand, if you ask for a one gang switch, the difference cannot be seen. You will have to flip over to see the wire terminals to differentiate between the two switches.

A two way switch will have 2 terminals while an ordinary switch will only have two. Check this two way switch wiring diagram to see how it is installed and operated.

Is It Dangerous To Mix Up A Two Way Switch With A Two Gang Switch

No it is not. If you have bought the wrong switch, and somehow stubbornly installed the switch even though you realize you have an extra terminal, the most that could happen is the light which the switch controls might not light up at all or lights up only when the switch is in the “OFF” position.

It will not cause any short circuits, blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker. The most damage it can do is maybe to your wallet.

Bring Along The Old Switch As Sample

If you plan yo replace any switches yourself and you are not sure what kind of switch it is, it is advisable to dismantle the switch first and bring it along with you. This way, you can show the old switch to the shop assistant so you will not buy the wrong item.

To make things even simpler, always insist on the same brand so all the terminals will have the same markings. The chances or making a mistake will greatly reduced.

What are lightning arrestors? As the name implies, a lightning arrestor is a device to arrest lightning. It is general knowledge that lightnings are dangerous. It can cause material and physical harm and in extreme cases, lives can be lost. There are places which are prone to lightning strikes and if you are staying in such places, it is advisable to have lightning arrestors installed to protect you homes.

Do A House Need A Lightning Arrestor?

It is hard for a layman like you and me to determine of the area we are staying is likely to be striked by lightning. In most cases, it is only after experiencing the horrors of our house being strike by lightning that we give serious thoughts about having a lightning arrestor installed.

However, it is a fact that lightning always strikes the highest point. Thus, most countries makes it compulsory to have lightning arrestors installed in building that exceed certain heights. For domestic dwelling however, there are no such regulations and it is up to the owners to decide if they want one.

The Different Parts Of A Lightning Arrestor

Lightning Rod

Basically a complete set up of a lightning arrestor installation consist of the Lightning Rods, The Conductor and the ground or earth rods. All the components are made of copper as copper is a very good conductor of electricity and is the most affordable. Some may use aluminum to further save costs.

The most important component is course the Lightning Rods. These rods comes in various specification and it will be best to consult an expert on the kind you need for you area.

The Conductors can come as copper cables or copper strip. The diameter and the thickness of the conductor will also depends on many factors so again, consult an expert for opinions.

Lastly comes the earthing rods or the ground rods. These are piled into the ground so it has be deep enough to disperse the high voltage that the lightning cause to avoid harm. There are devices to measure of the earthing are good enough to absorb the electrical surge.

Lightning Arrestor Installation

Typical Installation Of Lightning Arrestors

As lightning always strikes the highest point, it is common sense to install the lightning rods at the highest point of a building. For a normal single storey house that would of course mean the highest part of the roof, the apex.

Depending on the size of the house, the lightning arrestor installer will calculate the number of lightning rods needed, the specification of the conductors and of course the measurement of the earth conductivity.

Lightning Arrestors Is Not Suitable For DIY

As the installation of lightning arrestors requires some complex equipments and skills, these kind of job is definitely not suitable to be done by yourself. If the system is not properly installed, it will not be effective.

The parts and components needed are not cheap either so it will be a big waste of money of the job is not properly done.

No everyone is fortunate enough to finish college and come out to society with a degree. Every year, thousands drop out of school after completing their secondary education. Some are not the schooling type, some are not interested and yet some simply do not have to money. For whatever reasons, not having a degree does not mean you cannot make a decent living. You can make a living without a degree

To those who are not fortunate or intelligent enough to pursue a higher education, there is hope yet to make a comfortable living for yourself. What you need is just 4 simple traits.

If You Do Not Have A Degree, Learn A Skill

1. If You Do Not Have A Degree – Be Resourceful.

Do not be choosy the kind of jobs that comes your way. Always bear in mind that you are not as qualified as those sitting in the plush office. Take on any decent jobs offered to you and be prepared to learn from scratch, since you did not have the advantage of learning from colleges or universities where everything is hand fed to you. It can be any job, but my opinion is to get a blue collar job. It pays more and once you acquire the necessary skills, you might even earn more than a graduate. Of course the down side is, it’s going to be tough.

2. If You Do Not Have A Degree – Be Hardworking

Don’t be lazy. When you want to learn something, show to the person who is teaching you that you are a hard worker. Don’t sulk if you gets scolded for something you did wrong. Don’t sulk even if you gets scolded for something that you DID NOT do wrong. That’s the way it is being an apprentice. Always show respect to your sifu. Do as you are told and don’t try to be a smart Aleck. The best thing is to act dumb, but work smart. Don’t be afraid to ask. Lot’s of masters don’t like to teach you direct and lead you by the hands through a step by step tutorial. They will even shout at you for asking, but be persistent yet courteous.

3. If You Do Not Have A Degree – Be Observant

Observe and learn if you happen to have someone that doesn’t like to teach leading you. Keep your eyes open but your mouth shut. Digest what you saw and try to reason out why he did that.

4.If You Do Not Have A Degree – Persevere.

Never give up. Don’t be a rolling stone or you will end up like Jack. He knows all trades but he mastered none. If you have chosen a field that interest you, stick to it until you know you can make living out of it. Stick to it until you become a master yourself, but never be arrogant and think that you have learned and know everything. There is no such thing as knowing everything. Behind every hill there is a mountain, so always be humble. Keep learning, even from those more junior than you. Keep asking. Life is a non stop education after all. It worked for me. I did not starve or have I ever been jobless ever since I dropped out of school. I make a decent living without a degree of any kind.
