The “4^th Annual 2011 Student MAC Awards”, is Wednesday, May 4^th, 2011, 7 pm, at the Campus Center, in the Maguire Theatre, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury.  The MAC Awards recognize the achievements of the SUNY College at Old Westbury students in the fields of Journalism, Television, Digital Arts, Video, New Media and Radio. Visit on-line at www.MACAwards.org, for all the latest MAC Awards  news, and to preview the works from all nominees this year. 

The “4^th Annual 2011 Student MAC Awards”, will be streamed live for the first time on-line at www.ustream.com, keyword OWTV starting at 6:30 pm for our “Red Carpet Ceremony”, as the nominees make their way into the Maguire Theatre. Then, at 7 pm the MAC Awards take center stage with a live webcast from the theatre with all the action, including live student performances.  

Nominees are chosen by faculty, and all the works are judged by professionals in the field.

On Tuesday, March 15th, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, the Community Action, Learning and Leadership Program, (CALL for Change), welcomed special guest speaker Pedro Noguera, for a special lecture, 'Education and Justice: What's wrong with waiting for Superman'. Pedro Noguera is one of the country's most important voices on education reform, diversity, and the achievement gap. An award-winning educator, author and activist, he is a professor at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and co-Director of the Institute for The Study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings. An urban sociologist, Dr. Noguera’s scholarship and research focus on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the urban environment.

A powerful speaker with a unique ability to connect with diverse audiences, he is an expert on topics such as urban school reform, youth violence, the conditions that promote student achievement and the potential impact of school choice and vouchers on urban public schools. A prolific writer and editor, Dr. Noguera's books include Unfinished Business: Closing the Racial Achievement Gap in Our Schools; The Color of Success: Race And High-Achieving Urban Youth; Beyond Resistance: Youth Activism and Community Change: New Democratic Possibilities for Practice and Policy for America's Youth and the groundbreaking City Schools and the American Dream: Reclaiming The Promise of Public Education (Winner, Forward Magazine Award for best book in education 2003; American Association of Educational Studies, Book of the Year Award, 2005).

On Thursday, February 17th,  at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, as part of National Girls & Women In Sports Day for Student Athletes, guest Michele Kort spoke to the college community. Michele is an award winning sports journalist, and Senior Editor at Ms. Magazine. She delivered her presentation titled, "Play Ball: How Title IX Changed the Game for Women Who Love Sports."

 
Los Angeles-based writer and editor, Michele has been a journalist for over 25 years. Her stories have varied from her interests from popular music and film, to sports and fitness, to women's issues, and her style is marked by thoroughness, readability and warmth.

On Thursday, February 24th, at the SUNY College at Old Westbury as part of Black History Month, the American Studies Department welcomed guest speaker Michele Duster. Michelle Duster is the great granddaughter of the famous journalist, civil rights activist, and suffragist Ida B. Wells.


  

Michelle offered a personal narrative of how the well-known investigative journalist Ida B. Wells became a crusader for change on the international stage. She discussed the increasing influence of media conglomerates on public discourse and opinions. Michelle Duster has written two books that include the writing of Ida B. Wells; "Ida In Her Own Words", and "Ida From Abroad".

Robert Kenner, Director of "Food Inc.," one of the top 25 grossing theatrical documentaries of all time, spoke at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, in the Recital Hall, on Monday, January 31, 2011. "Food Inc.,"  has sold nearly 500,000 DVDs, while receiving widespread critical acclaim. The film has received dozens of awards and nominations, as well as influencing current food policy decisions. Kenner received a Peabody and an Emmy for “Two Days in October,” depicting simultaneous events in 1967: a deadly Vietcong ambush and a violent campus protest.

He was co-filmmaker with Richard Pearce on “The Road to Memphis” for the Martin Scorsese series, “The Blues.” Newsweek called “The Road to Memphis” “a fine  film, ever made about American music” and “the unadulterated gem of the Scorsese Series.” Kenner has directed numerous specials for National Geographic and PBS’s “American  Experience” series, as well as award winning commercials and corporate films for a wide range of clients. Kenner recently completed “When Strangers Click," seen on HBO. He is currently creating “Small Steps,” a series of animated web and television spots about the unsustainable nature of the industrial food system.

“One in eight babies is born too soon” and “one in six African American babies will be born preterm,” according to the March of Dimes. Prematurity is a national crisis, affecting families, schools, and communities while creating costs to businesses and health care. The March of Dimes is at the forefront of this fight to end prematurity with a multiyear, multimillion-dollar national campaign through research, education and preventative health care measures.

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, Dr. Deb welcomed Donna Brower, the Community Director of the Long Island Division of March of Dimes (MOD), along with Bonnie Gelback, a member of the Long Island Division MOD Board of Directors and the Chair of the MOD Program Services Committee, and Angeles Davila Torres, the Director of the Nassau County Department of Health Perinatal Services Network, to “Awareness Avenue”, on OWWR, Old Westbury Web Radio.

Some of the topics they addressed included: what is prematurity, what are the implications, warning signs, ethnic and racial disparities of prematurity, is prematurity preventable and are the last few weeks of pregnancy important for the health and well-being of the baby. Each topic shed light on the fact each of us can be affected by prematurity.

On Monday, November 15th, 2010, Dr. Laurence Krause of the Politics, Economics and Law Department at the SUNY College at Old Westbury presented "Depression Economics 101: Everything You Need to Know about Depression Economics but were Afraid to Ask." Dr. Krause talked about the "crisis" of our economy today as well as the nature of the first Great Depression and how it relates to our failing economy today.  He goes through a simple model of a depression and the policies that surround it while defining the details, events, and outcomes of the past.

On Thursday, September 7th, 2010, the SUNY College at Old Westbury welcomed Attorney General Andrew Cuomo as he announced the "Student Credit Card Reforms for Colleges and Universities". The reforms provide a road map for how shools can protect college students from falling victim to  problematic credit card marketing practices.  As his statewide investigation into student credit card marketing continues, Cuomo called on all New York colleges and universities to adopt the reforms.

Cuomo was joined with Chancellor of Schools, Nancy L. Zimpher, and President of the SUNY College at Old Westbury, Dr. Calvin O. Butts III to mark the event.
