Excerpt:

Original Charleston Benne Wafers are sesame seed cookies with African roots and one of the Holy City’s best-known foods. Benne is said to be the Bantu word for sesame. The Olde Colony Bakery in Mount Pleasant, which makes about 3,000 pounds a week in December, is the main producer.

The bakery sells the wafers in various sizes at www.oldecolonybakery.com or by calling 216-3232. The wafers also can be purchased in a decorative 15-ounce tin at the Preservation Society of Charleston, 147 King St. for $12.99. Visit www.preservationsociety.org or call 722-4630.

In each favor bag, we included a recipe card for a “happy marriage” and treats from South Carolina and Michigan. For Michigan, we included a spice packet from our favorite spice shop in Ann Arbor, MI – The Spice Merchants. From South Carolina we provided the sweets – a Benne Wafer Turndown bag, Nana’s Praline, and Charleston Chew candies.

And then on our dessert table, in addition to wedding cake, we had our favorite candy, pies from Grand Traverse Pie Company, and Benne Wafers. The Benne Wafers and candy were in Anchor penny jars. If we find a picture of the Benne Wafers in the jar with the scoop, we’ll post a picture!

In recent years, we had thought about expanding and buying our own building. After several years of research, we started looking for properties in the summer of 2012. After many hours of property searches, architect blue prints, meetings, and thought, we decided on a property in Mt. Pleasant off I-526 on Long Point Rd.

Most important to us, we still wanted a business that was easy for our customers to find us. Also, we needed a way to continue to grow our family business.

We’re grateful that Peter has had the time to lead our new building efforts as the rest of us stay busy making cookies and bread. It’s been a wonderful 2012 and we’re thankful for the opportunity to bake for you every day. Like any big change, we’re excited and nervous at the same time. 2013 is a big year for us and we can’t wait to move!

Thank you for being a part of the Olde Colony Bakery family.
