Fresh Air Fund - Looking for host Families for 2011

THE FRESH AIR FUND, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Nearly 10,000 New York City children enjoy free Fresh Air Fund programs annually. In 2010, close to 5,000 children visited volunteer host families in suburbs and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. 3,000 children also attended five Fresh Air camps on a 2,300-acre site in Fishkill, New York. The Fund’s year-round camping program serves an additional 2,000 young people each year.

The Summer of 2010 is almost over, but The Fresh Air Fund still needs loving host families. We are looking for families in the following areas to host THIS summer Red Hook, Columbia County, Saugerties, Delmar, Guilderland & Altamont, Latham and Rensselaer, NY. If you or someone you know is able to host, please sign up now.

In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund's Volunteer Host Family program, called Friendly Town, gave close to 5,000 New York City boys and girls, ages six to 18, free summer experiences in the country and the suburbs. Volunteer host families shared their friendship and homes up to two weeks or more in 13 Northeastern states from Virginia to Maine and Canada.

The Fresh Air Fund relies on donations to provide memorable summers to NYC children.

The Fresh Air Fund still needs hosts for the summer of 2010.

Thanks to host families who open up their homes for a few weeks each summer, children growing up in New York City's toughest neighborhoods have experienced the joys of Fresh Air experiences.

The Alfred Swing Dance Network will host a dance to raise funds for out of work employees and businesses affected by the recent major fire in downtown Alfred.

The dance will be on Sunday afternoon , Dec 6 from 2- 5pm. Please join ASDN for some swing dancing to great music for a good cause!

Music will be provided by DJ Graham Marks, featuring Big Band, Classic Swing, Rhythm and Blues, and a variety of tempos.

The evening will start with an introductory class for beginners at 2:00 pm. The Dance will start at 3:00 pm and go till 5:00pm. This event is open to everyone, all ages and all levels of experience. Beginners are especially welcome!

All events will take place in the beautiful restored ballroom on the second floor of the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St, Alfred, NY.

It is not necessary to have a partner to attend the class or dance. Dress is casual. Dancers are asked to bring clean, smooth-soled shoes to protect the dance floor. There are plenty of chairs and it will be easy to change from your street shoes.

In consideration of people with allergies, ASDN asks that dancers please do not use fragrances: perfumes, colognes, aftershaves, etc.

There will be a $10.00 admission to the dance.

The Third Annual Woodworking Wonders Weekend will be held on the Town Square in Port Allegany, PA.

Highly skilled craftsmen, craftswomen and artists showcase their original designs and one of kind pieces in hand carved wood at this
outdoor festival. All of these creations are made in the USA. Antique tools in action, classic Holgate wood toys and exquisite art pieces
will be on display. Free hourly demonstrations of carving for the beginner.

Portville Library's Youth Yard Sale

Portville Library's Youth Yard Sale will be held Friday, May 29^th 9 am 3 pm and Saturday, May 30^th 9 am to noon. The library is located at 2 North Main Street.

A large variety of gently used items have been donated by members of the Friends of the Library, staff members, Junior Friends and patrons to help support our children's programs. Household items, toys, and garage knickknacks can be found among the collection of interesting items. The children's department greatly appreciates everyone's charitable contributions.

Proceeds from this event cover the entire cost of our summer reading program, reading incentives throughout the school year and craft supplies for our Friday morning story hour.

We are still receiving donations during regular library hours. No clothing or large appliances please. If additional information is needed, please contact the library by calling (716) 933-8441.

Swing Dance Workshops and Evening Dance with The White Hots
Saturday April 4, 2009

Want to learn to swing dance? Already know the basics and want to learn more? ASDN will be hosting dance workshops in the morning and afternoon on Sat. April 4th in East Coast Swing with Ithaca's Cindy Overstreet. Megan Staffel, co-founder of ASDN said, "Cindy was a big hit at our Oct. dance and we are bringing her back by popular demand to teach again in Alfred. As always, beginners are most welcome and no partner is needed".

The morning class will focus on the fundamentals of East Coast Swing, or Jitterbug, This class will start at the beginning. As the morning progresses the emphasis will be on partnering and connection. This class is for beginners (no previous experience is needed) and moderately experienced dancers. The morning session runs from 9:30am to 12:15 pm. There will be plenty of breaks.

The afternoon class will move on from the basic steps and will focus on the why and how of moves that look cool and feel good. This class requires either the morning class, or some experience with basic swing moves. The afternoon session runs from 2:00 to 5:15 pm and will also have plenty of breaks.

Graham Marks, co-founder of ASDN said, " As an organization we are really pleased to be a recipient of a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program administered by the Cattaraugus Arts Council. Because our classes are funded in part by this grant we are able to offer the classes at a really affordable rate. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to start dancing or for experienced dancers to learn more."

In the evening there will be a dance with live music with a six-piece ensemble, The White Hots, from Rochester. Graham says, "This is a great dance band that really swings, a group of accomplished musicians that play the classic swing hits. It is impossible to stay in your seat". The dance goes from 7:30 to 10 pm.

Red Cross Fundraiser

in Bradford, on Saturday morning Sept 27, 2008 in the TOPS parking lot starting at 8am and ending around noon.

In honor of National Service Day, volunteers from the McKean County for Barack Obama campaign for change group, will be helping to raise money for our local Red Cross for Hurricane disaster relief in Bradford, PA.

We will have a 50/50, Chinese Auction with lots of donations from Bradford retailers, a bake sale, yard sale and voter registration (non-partisan) for anyone who needs to register to vote.

So come on out, tell your friends to stop by Tops on Saturday morning in Bradford to help support the Red Cross. Non clothing donations will be accepted as well.

The Alfred Swing Dance Network

Do you love to Swing Dance? Have you always wanted to learn but never had a partner that was interested? Rochester and Buffalo too far to drive for a dance? To remedy this situation, Graham Marks, Megan Staffel and Nancy Meyers have formed The Alfred Swing Dance Network (ASDN). The first dance will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 in the beautiful restored theatre on the second floor of the Alfred Village Hall, 7 West University St., Alfred, New York. The evening will start with a class for beginners at 7:00 pm and the Dance will start at 8:00 and go till 10:00pm. This event is open to everyone, all ages and all levels of experience. Beginners are especially welcome!

You do not need to know how to dance to attend. The beginning class will be taught by Gloria Betlem and Kent Divers, wonderful dancers, who have a dance studio in S. Lima, NY. This class will introduce the basics so that someone dancing for the first time will learn enough to have fun at the dance. The class is open to all, those with some experience who want a refresher and those who have never danced before.

It is not necessary to have a partner to attend the class or dance. The Alfred Swing Dance Network strives to create a friendly atmosphere, where dancers of different levels feel comfortable mixing and asking others to dance. Most swing dancers like to dance with many different partners in the course of the evening and in the swing dance world, it is common and welcomed, for women to ask men to dance.

Swing is not a single dance, but rather a family of related dances and has evolved into many expressions over the years. This includes Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and Balboa. The introductory class will teach the basics of East Coast Swing, also known as Jitterbug. Graham Marks will DJ, and the musical selections will feature Big Band, Classic swing, Rhythm and Blues, and a variety of tempos.

Dress is casual . Dancers are asked to bring clean, soft-soled, non-marking shoes to protect the dance floor. There are plenty of chairs and it will be easy to change from your street shoes.

It seems as though there are many bloggers and website professionals getting into putting their home town of Olean, NY 'on the web' per se. When I first started this blog I wanted to have one place to go to find current events and/or entertainment going on in the area and I tried to create a place for people to get excited to post their fund raisers, gatherings or events.

Between my day job and my lack of experience in HTML, I've decided to leave this blog here as it does have alot of links that I am personally interested in and I did put alot of time and effort into making it professional. I'll eventually be adding some shopping links and whatever comes across that I feel as though I would be able to publish without running into any copywright issues.

There are many excellent resources for entertainment in the Olean area. Some of which you will find by checking out the sidebar of my blog and other web sites. Olean NY Entertainment is alive and well and there is always something going on. Just wish there weren't so many places to post about it. *smile*
