Join multi-award winning picture book creator Oliver Jeffers for a thought-provoking special event as he talks about his new book Here We Are.

Our world can be a bewildering place, especially if you’ve only just got here. Explore our planet and how we live on it as Oliver takes you on a journey through a series of notes introducing planet Earth. This event will include live drawing, storytelling and time for questions. After the event you can buy this book and get it signed, but please note the queue for signing can be long and patience will be needed! This event is recommended for families with children aged 3 and above.

Jeffers’ new book is inspired by the birth of his son, and started with the strangeness of being a parent and the realization that new life is a blank slate. As the book unfolded, so did global events, and he felt that he had to re-emphasise the simple principles of humanity. He wanted his son to know that while we are all unique individuals, we are all in this together. Join Jeffers as he tells some stories, explains some stuff, draws some pictures, answers some questions, and generally clears a few things up.

Jeffers’ picture books include The Incredible Book Eating Boy, This Moose Belongs to Me, The Day Crayons Quit and its sequel The Day the Crayons Came Home (both No1 New York Times bestsellers) and Once Upon an Alphabet. All have been have been translated into more than 30 languages. HEROES: Oliver Jeffers meets Professor Brian Cox

Artist and children’s writer Oliver Jeffers talks to physicist and science presenter Brian Cox on how to make sense of the world for young and old alike.

Throughout 2017 The School of Life will host a unique series of life events called HEROES, in which we explore how people influence and learn from one another. We invite one of the central figures of our times to nominate a personal hero from a different field – a cultural icon whose work they have long admired from afar. Then we bring the pair together on stage for a unique and rich conversation.

Oliver Jeffers’ work is celebrated for the way his illustrations and stories conjure a sense of magic and curiosity. From books about a boy helping a lost penguin (Lost and Found) to his laugh-out-loud classic (Stuck), he brings a sense of wonder and possibility into the lives of his many young readers. But his latest challenge has come – not in imagining something fantastic and wonderful – but in trying to explain the world, in its simplest terms, to his two-year-old son. Here We Are tries to look at the planet through fresh eyes and explain the complexity of humanity without losing the enchantment of a child’s perspective.

Physicist and popular television presenter Brian Cox is no stranger to this same task. In his informative science programmes, he has managed to explain complicated ideas using relatable metaphors and simple language. Joining up the unseen principles that inform everything which happens on Earth and making them understandable and exciting for adults and children alike. He often reminds his audience that Physics has dated the universe at over thirteen billion years in age, and – from that perspective – our time on Earth is both exceedingly small and extremely precious. It’s a challenging idea to impart to a young person, but an important one all the same.

Oliver has invited Brian to join him on stage so that they can discuss what it means to see the bigger picture: in Physics and in fiction. As a father, he is concerned with how we live on the Earth, the message that we offer to our children and how we can help future generations understand that everything we do in our shared world will impact others. So join us for an event that brings together a wonderful artist and story-teller with a scientist who knows how to tell us how enchanting life already is.

A Child of Books

Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston

New York Times best-selling author-illustrator Oliver Jeffers and fine artist Sam Winston will present on their collaboratively created picturebook, A Child of Books. An artistic love letter to reading and the imagination, A Child of Books combines Jeffers’s expressive images and Winston’s immersive typographical landscapes, as a girl and boy adventure through the rich terrain of stories. A book signing will follow.

Recommended for ages 10 and up.

Oliver Jeffers is the author-illustrator of many books for children, including Once Upon an Alphabet, which won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and Lost and Found, which was a Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Medal winner. He is also the illustrator of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Day the Crayons Quit and its follow-up, The Day the Crayons Came Home, both written by Drew Daywalt. Oliver Jeffers lives in Brooklyn.

*Registration for participants ages 10 and up is recommended but not required. Children under 10 do not need to register.

Sam Winston is a fine artist whose work has been featured in many special collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, the Tate Galleries in London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He works and lives in London.

Brooklyn based Oliver Jeffers will talk about his diverse art practice which includes illustration, painting, collage and installation.

Humour and curiosity are the main focus of Jeffer's artworks. His most recent series include the Dipped Paintings; figurative portaits partially obscured by enamel paint and Land and Seascape paintings whic investigate the relationship between art, science and the human inability to fully understand the reality we live in.

WEDNESDAY MAY 4, 8PM – PERFORMANCE by Oliver Jeffers – A performance of self-explanation, story-telling, and picture-drawing. There is also a pie chart. Oliver Jeffers is a visual artist and author from Belfast, Northern Ireland, now living and working in Brooklyn, New York. At the core of Oliver’s work is a fierce curiosity – a desire to ask questions and tell stories about his observations. Stories not only about the world as he sees it now, but also about remembered snippets from his worldview as a child.

For this talk, he will guide people through a brief history of how various projects have come to be, and how his fine art practice and his publishing work often cross-reference and influence one another.

Oliver Jeffers discusses his Dipped Paintings project. In 2012, he embarked on an ambitious artistic pursuit to explore simultaneously the practice of portraiture as well as time’s confounding effects on memory. Submerging his carefully rendered portraits into vats of brightly coloured enamel paint over a series of performances, these ‘dipped paintings’ vibrate between creation and loss. The portraits are neither seen nor photographed prior to their dipping, so the sole documentation of the unobscured pieces are the memories and testimonies of those present the moment they are lowered into the paint.

The museum will be free and open to the public on 1st December with music and performances. I will be talking about my work from 8pm, free tickets for the artist talks will be available from the visitor center at 7pm.

I was nominated by the public as one of the top ten artists during the open studio weekend of GO Brooklyn, in conjunction with the Brooklyn Museum.
