Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, is highly developed and varied. Balinese performing arts often portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy Balinese influence. Famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, gong keybar, and kecak (the monkey dance). Bali boasts one of the most diverse and innovative performing arts cultures in the world, with paid performances at thousands of temple festivals, private ceremonies, or public shows.

Another remarkable mark of the Bali culture hat all tourists has been astonished and keeps coming back is the series of ceremonies and rituals known as the Manusa Yadnya. This symbols the diverse stages of Balinese life. Cremation is very popular on this island and nothing like in the West death is a joyous and colorful event for the Balinese.

Bali culture is based on a form of this religion, which is called Hindu Darma. It is very rich and there is so much to learn.

Balinese Hinduism includes ideals from Indian Hinduism, Buddhism and animism. Balinese Hindus believe in the Indian deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, but they believe these deities all manifested from one supreme being, Ida Sanghyang Widi Wasa. The tenets of Buddhism and animism are reflected in the importance of respecting the spirits and the powers of nature through rituals and ceremonies. Many Balinese visit temples daily and hold ceremonies for important events like births, weddings and even housewarmings.

The island of Bali is literally a very beautiful island situated under the equator in Indonesian Archipelago, is one of the most interesting and ultimate tourist destination in Asia. Since the first decade of the 20th century visitors have given to it several nicknames "Island of Gods" - "Island of thousand Temples" "The Last Paradise" and also often called "Island of Artist".

Social life in Bali is relatively free and easy. In Balinese leisure activities the roles are also sex differentiated. Both men and women dance but only men play the gamelan. Today you do see some women painters, sculptors, and woodcarvers. By wearing certain kinds of batik one can reveal the subtle differences in age, gender, status and kasta. The Balinese use batik for people but also for decoration of buildings, altars, sanctuaries and statues.

Ceremonies are extremely important within the Balinese system of healing.

This variation of the Hindu religion is on certain areas a lot less strict than the variant from India. The caste system is treated a little bit less strict, mariage regulations are more liberal and the higher studies of Brahmanen are somewhat of a mystery for most. The Balinese put more emphasis on frequent ceremonies and rituals, visual behavior is more important than the fine print of Hinduism.

There are also ceremonies in the temples that people perform as well as dances which are part of these rituals. When visiting the temples, it is always good to be respectful when the locals perform their rituals.

Buta Yadnya, the ceremonies for earthly spirits. For example every morning after cooking housewives put simple offerings on the left side of the door and in the middle of the house compound so as to maintain harmony between man and his spirit environment.

There are various rituals and ceremonies celebrating things such as the ascension of the ancestral spirits, praying for strength to face the temptations of the world, strengthening brotherhood and understanding among the youth, purification, celebrating new year, cleansing and so on. As you drive through the island, you can see symbols of these celebrations in the front of houses, bamboo poles decorated with coconut leaves, flowers, cakes and fruits.

Hinduism is one of the main religions in Bali. The Bali culture is based on a form of this religion, which is called "Hindu Darma". This religion reached the island during the eleventh century. Most of the family customs and traditions as well as community lifestyles of the Balinese people are influenced by this. The religious influence even expands widely into the arts, which makes Bali distinct from the rest of Indonesia.

Ngaben Cremation Ceremonies

The Ngaben or Cremation Ceremony is a very important part of Balinese culture. The ceremony is performed to send the dead from death to the next life. When death descends on a Balinese, the village kul kul will sound, hanging in the village temple tower to announce the departure of the deceased.

The body will then be placed at the Bale Delod, and the deceased treated as if sleeping. No tears are shed as the Balinese believe that the deceased will return shortly to be reincarnated into the family.

The Priest will then consult the Dewasa for the day of the ngaben ceremony. On the appointed day, the body of the deceased is placed inside a coffin, which is then placed inside a wadah, or sarcophagus shaped in the form of a buffalo. It is actually a temple structure made of paper and light wood.

The funeral procession then leaves for the cremation site, carrying the wadah. The most important part of the ngaben is the burning of the wadah, with fire taken from a holy source, thus sending the deceased to the afterlife,to prepare for a future reincarnation.

Bali Aga Rites ceremony is Tenganan

The Tenganans practice an ancient rite known as mekare kare, the ritual blood sacrifice. This is not as gory as it sounds, but an event where all villagers get involved in an annual ritual combat, using thorny pandan leaves to draw blood.

Each combatant hits his opponent with the aim of drawing blood. The ritual fight will be held every time there is a temple ceremony is Tenganan, which tends to fall in the fifth month of the Balinese calendar.

The fighting and the blood are real, and all participants come well prepared, carrying weapons of a rotan-woven shield and a bundle of thorny pandan leaves, used to scratch the opponent's skin until it bleeds.

Before the fight begins, participants drink rice wine or tuak, fermented local palm, to symbolise brotherhood and sportsmanship. But when the selonding music fills the air, a volley of fierce jeers, insults, cheers and shouts are thrown to instill fear. And the fighting begins.

The fighting is judged by a mediator, most probably a prominent figure of the village, and usually lasts for a fierce 5 to 10 minutes. The first person to draw blood with the thorny weapon is victor, and the person he draws blood from is the vanquished. Both victor and vanquished are broken up by the mediator as soon as blood is drawn.

As the injured are treated with traditional liquid medicines, and all fighters recover their strength, the whole village prepares food and drink for an elaborate feast which must follow the Balinese sacrifice of human blood.

Balinese culture has also got a population control mechanism in their child naming practices, and this is not only confined to the Bali Aga, but encompasses every Balinese. Every first born is named Wayan, second born Made, third Nyoman, and the fourth Ketut. Anymore children will see a repeat of the names following the order. But this practice definitely is a big hint and subtle reminder to stop at a maximum of four!

Original Balinese The Bali Aga

The original Balinese or Bali Aga, are a unique ethnic group that still live and practise a way of life that pre-dates modern civilisation. The Bali Aga are thought to be the original inhabitants of Bali who fled imperialistic invaders, eventually finding refuge in the solitude of Bali's remote mountains. Only two villages remain - which until recently, were firmly shut away from the rest of the world, hidden in the hills of East Bali.

Located just west of Candi Dasa lie the villages of Tenganan and Trunyan, isolated across the vast Lake Kintamani. The villages, home to the Bali Aga, are shut off by a solid wall surrounding the entire village. The wall is only broken by means of four gates, each facing north, south, east and west. Within these walls lies a massive Banyan tree surrounded by a low wall of uncut stones, making up a small enclosure for a very sacred temple. Tenganan has only recently opened up to outsiders although strict rules still apply, especially concerning marriage to outsiders. Tenganan has wonderful fabrics, including the renowned double weave ikat cloth.

The villagers of Tenganan are tall and slender with very pale complexions and refined manners. The men folk still wear their hair long and have a communistic system which does not recognize individual ownership of property. Every house in Tenganan looks exactly alike, with a flight of steps leading to a small gate opening into a courtyard with sleeping quarters, kitchen, and a long house for storage. A small empty shrine, signifies a place where spirits may rest when they visit their descendants. Tenganan owns huge tracts of fertile and well cultivated lands capable of satisfying the needs of the village; and also making Tenganan one of the richest in Bali.

A people known for their filed and blackened teeth, the Bali Aga are said to bring the spirits of their ancestors down to Earth for protection through sacrifices. The Bali Aga leave the bodies of their dead in the jungle to be carried away by the spirits, and they are believed to have possibly eaten parts of their headmen's bodies to absorb magic powers. Family clans are ruled by a council of elders who are also religious priests. The Bali Aga revere the forces of nature and the spirits of their ancestors, with whom they continue to live as a great family of both the living and the dead.

Taman Ayun Temple in Bali

Taman Ayun Temple is a landmark in the village of Mengwi, Badung regency, located 17km northwest of Denpasar. This temple complex boasts magnificent traditional architectural features throughout its courtyards and enclosures as well as expansive garden landscapes comprised of lotus and fish ponds.

The temple was built circa 1634 by the then ruler of the Mengwi kingdom, Tjokerda Sakti Blambangan, with Chinese architectural inspirations, and underwent a significant restoration project in 1937. Towering tiers from the temple shrines make up most of the profile of Taman Ayun and are a gesture of the people of Mengwi’s reverence to their deified noble ancestors, for the temple complex is considered the ‘mother temple’ of Mengwi.

The Taman Ayun Temple was to serve as a main site of worship among the Mengwi people who need not travel too far to the main large temples, the likes of the Besakih ‘mother temple’ in Karangasem, Batukaru Temple in Tabanan, or Batur Temple in Kintamani. It also served as a unifying symbol among the Mengwi royalty and the people.

Taman Ayun Temple Hightlights

The Taman Ayun Temple complex comprises four different divisions, one ranking higher than the other. The first is referred to as the ‘Jaba’ or outer division, accessible only through a single entrance and walkway over the ponds. Inside, near the entrance is a small guardian shrine and on the right is a large ‘wantilan’ hall where the communal gatherings take place. A tall fountain with spouts jutting up and out to the cardinal directions can be seen in this area.

Onto the next court, a small temple compound by the name of Pura Luhuring Purnama can be seen. The second and third terraces are slightly higher than the first. To enter, visitors must go through a second gate where a shelter called Bale Pengubengan greets them with ornamental features that depict the nine Hindu gods that guard the nine points of the compass, referred to as Dewata Nawa Sanga. East of this court is a small temple called Pura Dalem Bekak, while in its western corner is an eight metre-high wooden bell tower known to locals as ‘Bale Kulkul’. A climb up will reveal two hanging rectangular wooden bells, plus a high and spectacular view of the whole complex.

The fourth and last court is considered the most sacred, thus ranks the highest. It is referred to as the Utama Mandala. The intricately ornate central gate is open only during ceremonies, as the entryway for consecrated heirlooms and other ceremonial paraphernalia. Another gate at its east is for daily access. Several tiers of different outlines and sizes rise up into the temple’s skyline.

The temple’s three grounds denote the three cosmological levels known to Balinese Hinduism, namely the world of man, the realm of gods and deities, and the topmost divine level. As recounted in the ancient texts of the ‘Adhiparwa’, the whole complex of the Taman Ayun Temple represents Mount Mahameru in the so-called ‘churning of the sea of milk’ or the cosmic formation of the world.

The name ‘Taman Ayun’ translates as ‘beautiful garden’. The vast encircling pools were once royal recreational places for the palace maids who would sail small canoes. Now the pools and ponds are fenced and visitors are denied entrance.

Good to Know about Taman Ayun Temple

Entrance fee to the Taman Ayun Temple is a modest Rp. 3,000-4,000. The temple shares the same anniversary day of the cliff-perched Uluwatu Temple on the island’s southern Bukit peninsula, which is celebrated on the 210-day Balinese Pawukon calendar system or on every ‘Kliwon Medangsia’ Tuesday. The ‘piodalan’ temple anniversary celebrations see pilgrims flock to the temple complex, day and night.

A trip to the Taman Ayun Temple complex is usually an included itinerary for long journeys up to the central or northern Bali regions. It is particularly a frequent stopover for visitors who opt to spend time up in Bedugul, as the site is conveniently en route from southern Bali.

It is a great place to marvel at the early and traditional Balinese architectural features that prevail on the island. Although the pools are far from what can be imagined during its days of glory in the distant past, the moss-lined walls and jade algae-filled water add to the rustic charm of the whole scenery of this over three centuries-old temple site.

North of the bell tower is a pavilion called Bale Loji. In old times, this was where priests and ceremonial attendants would make preparations and take a break. Nowadays, artists can be seen here busy at their art-in-the-making. Paintings are also available here for purchase.

Museum Manusa Yadnya is located just across the road from the temple site. The museum showcases Balinese Hinduism rituals and human rites of passage, throughout their stages of life. It is an often convenient and additional highlight on each visit to Taman Ayun.

Opening Hours: 09:00-16:00

Location: Village of Mengwi, Badung regency, approximately 17km northwest from Denpasar.

How to get there: Follow the main road north from Denpasar along the common Jalan Kapal thoroughfare towards Bedugul. Upon reaching Mengwi, the landmark can’t be missed.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or GWK for short, is the name of a cultural park on Bali’s hilly southern coast famous for the ongoing construction of a gigantic statue of Vishnu riding on the back of a ‘garuda’ (a supernatural eagle-like being). The completed part of the statue is of the upper part of Vishnu’s body, the head of the ‘garuda’ and Vishnu’s hands.

The cultural park has become one of the favourite places in Bali for art and cultural performances, exhibitions, and conferences. GWK, once completed at 145 metres, will be one of the world’s tallest statues and erected on the top of the hill, with a magnificent panorama of Bali.

Overview

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park is set in 250 hectares of land in Ungasan, south of Bali, and is dedicated to embrace as well as preserve the art, cultural, culinary, and spiritual aspects of the island. The Garuda is a Hindu mythical bird, Wisnu is the Indonesian for Vishnu and kencana means a carriage. Bali’s future landmark of a 145-metre tall copper-steel-brass statue is planned to be placed here; it is of Vishnu riding on the back of his ‘garuda’ with 64-metre long wings.

Nyoman Nuarta, a Balinese sculptor, started the project in 1997 and it has instantly become one of Bali’s points of interests even though it is currently only around 25% complete with the existing upper part of Vishnu body, garuda’s head, and Vishnu’s hands. Eventually, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue will be able to be seen within a radius of 20km from Kuta, Sanur, and Nusa Dua.

GWK Cultural Park is about 260 metres above sea level, resulting in must-see spectacular views overlooking the island and the ocean. Facilities here include an amphitheatre, an exhibition gallery, open-air venues, two restaurants, a souvenir shop, an art market, a massage centre, ATV and Segway rentals, as well as adventurous activities.

Good to Know and What not to Miss

Plaza Wisnu, on the highest level of grounds in the park, is where the statue’s upper part of Vishnu body is placed. Traditional Balinese dance is performed here, with the majestic statue as a background. By the statue is Parahyangan Somaka Giri – a sacred fount that purportedly bears magical healing powers. The water is rich in important minerals that have healing abilities.

Street Theatre is the main commercial area where tours begin and end. You will find a GWK Souvenir Shop, ‘Bali Art Market’ store, and a reflexology outlet here. The story of Garuda Wisnu Kencana is related here in carvings on four limestone walls. A Barong dance is also performed at this spot every day.

The largest outdoor venue in the park is Lotus Pond, contained by massive quarried limestone blocks. The 4,400sqm area can hold up to 7,500 people for dramatic big-scale events, such as music concerts, mega runway fashion shows, and much more. The garuda-head part of the statue makes a phenomenal background for events.

The most beautiful vista of the island in the area is found in the Indraloka Garden. It holds medium-scale events such as wedding parties, company gatherings, and more.

The GWK Amphitheatre accommodates up to 800 people and features high-quality acoustics. A number of plays have been performed here. This was also the venue of the international ‘Bali for the World’ event in 2003 that was intended to resurrect Bali’s tourism industry after the Bali Bombing in 2002. Don’t forget to watch Bali’s famous Kecak dance performed here every day at 18:30!

Balairung Dewi Sri is the name of the GWK exhibition hall, derived from the goddess of rice and fertility. Fun free services are provided here such as nail painting, hair braiding, and more. Visitors are also welcome to watch a feature video on the making of the GWK statue or Panca Yadnya (Balinese Hindu five holy offerings). Visitors can purchase the video at the GWK souvenir shop.

Tirtha Agung is the area where you will find the hands part of Vishnu statue.

A Balinese parade around the park is scheduled at 17:00 daily.

Jendela Bali, a panoramic restaurant, is situated in the Street Theatre area. It provides authentic Balinese food and daily entertainment. The Berandas is a new addition to Street Theatre, serving an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The Vishnu statue on its own is planned to be at least 75 metres tall and the garuda statue should be around 70 metres tall. The weight of the statue will be approximately 4,000 tons. Some parts of GWK statue will be covered in gold foil.

The project will take longer time for completion than initially planned due to Indonesia’s monetary crisis.

Besakih Temple - Pura Besakih

Besakih Temple has been known as Bali’s ‘Mother Temple’ for over 1,000 years and is perched 1,000 metres high on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung. Besakih is an artistic and unique complex that consists of at least 86 temples which include the main Pura Penataran Agung (the Great Temple of State), as well as 18 others.

Besakih is the biggest and holiest amongst the temples on the island and is surrounded by breathtaking and scenic rice paddies, hills, mountains, streams, and much more. It is said to be where the very first revelation from Balinese Hindu’s God, Hyang Rsi Markendya, was received.

Overview

To the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. Mount Agung’s high location gives it an almost mystical quality. Many stairs lead up to the sacred mountain, leading to the many temples that vary according to types, status, and functions.

Pura Besakih features three temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity. Pura Penataran Agung in the centre has white banners for Shiva, the destroyer; Pura Kiduling Kreteg on the right side is with red banners for Brahma, the creator; and Pura Batu Madeg represents Vishnu, the preserver, with its black banners. Several other temples in Pura Besakih can be visited, but many of their inner courtyards are closed to the public as they’re reserved for worshippers.

Pura Besakih is said to be the only temple open to every devotee from any caste groups. It is because of its nature as the primal centre of all activities such as ceremonies, renovations, and more. The philosophical meaning the complex holds combines elements of education, technology, living tools, social lives, livelihoods, linguistic systems, arts, and religion. The complex also expresses Balinese Hindu’s essential belief that life on earth must be kept in balance and harmony between man and God, man and society, as well as man and his natural environment.

History of Besakih Temple

Pura Batu Medeg, containing a central stone, indicates that the area of Pura Besakih has been regarded as a holy place since long before recorded history. It all started in the 8th century, when a Hindustani monk received a revelation to create homes for people during his isolation. Throughout the process, many of his followers died due to illness and accident. On its completion it was called ‘Basuki’, referring to the dragon deity ‘Naga Besukian’ who inhabited Mount Agung. The name ‘Besakih’ eventually evolved from it.

Other shrines were gradually built and Pura Besakih was made the main temple during the conquering of Bali by the Majapahit Empire in 1343. Since then, Pura Besakih has had several restorations as earthquakes in 1917 and Mount Agung’s series of eruptions in 1963 damaged the complex. The lava flow passed by Pura Besakih mere metres from it and it is believed to be a miraculous signal from the deities that they wanted to demonstrate their power without completely destroying the holy complex their devotees had built for them to reside.

Highlights and Features

The biggest temple in the complex, Pura Penataran Agung, has different areas representing seven layers of the universe, each with their own shrine.

From Pura Pasimpangan on the downstream side (on the east of the main street) to Pura Pangubengan upstream, the distance is approximately three kilometres.

Located on higher ground, the closest to the top of Mount Agung, Pura Pangubengan has great vistas and it’s about a 30-minute walk from the main Pura Penataran Agung.

About 10 minutes to the east of Pura Pangubengan is Pura Batu Tirtha. It is the place of the holy water used in ‘karya agung’ ceremonies at Pura Besakih and Pekraman villages.

Four temples in the complex reflect four forms of God at compass points: Pura Batu Madeg in the north, Pura Kiduling Kreteg to the south, Pura Gelap in the east, and Pura Ulun Kulkul in the west.

‘Batu ngadeg’, meaning ‘a standing stone’, is found in the shrine of Meru Tumpang Sebelas in Pura Batu Madeg. This is where Vishnu is manifested. Still in the courtyard of Pura Batu Madeg, in front of Meru Tumpang Sebelas is the Pesamuan shrine (a quadrangle shape with two lines of 16 poles) as a symbol of how Vishnu’s power co-mingles with the world.

At least 20 minutes to the northwest from Pura Batu Madeg, down the footpath to the valley and along the river, is Pura Peninjoan – erected on a tiny hill. The beautiful views from here include all the shrines of Pura Penataran Agung, beaches and southern Bali.

On the west is Pura Ulun Kulkul, famous for the main and most precious ‘kulkul’ (Balinese wooden slit gong) on the island. Kulkul is a communication device to summon or convey special messages to Balinese Hindu devotees.

On the northern side of Pura Ulun Kulkul is Pura Merajan Selonding where the 'Bredah' inscription mentions a king in Besakih, and a set of ancient gamelan called ‘Selonding’ are kept.

Pura Gua, located on the eastern side of the main street, is the home of the Dragon deity. There’s a big cave at the canyon of the river on the east that has its mouth closed due to erosion, but people still sometimes practise yoga in front of it.

Pura Jenggala, southwest of Pura Penataran Agung, is also often called Pura Hyang Haluh by the local devotees. The ‘Setra Agung’, burial grounds, south of the temple, is the reason for its second name. Here, you can find sacred ancient stone statues in the garuda shape, and more.Pura Basukian Puseh Jagat is located to the southeast of Pura Penataran Agung. It was the foundation of Pura Besakih’s existence.

Good to Know and What not to Miss

Pura Besakih was nominated as a World Heritage Site in around 1995, but as yet remains unvested.

There are at least 70 ceremonies or religious celebrations held each year here, as each shrine has its own anniversary, plus the big holidays based on the 210-day Balinese Hindu calendar system.

Pura Basukihan, Pura Penataran Agung, and Pura Dalem Puri are the mother of all village’ temples of all Pura Puseh, Pura Desa, and Pura Dalem. Their shrines contain religious literature referring how to build a temple.

During the daytime Besakih can become a crowded tourist trap, with self-created ‘temple guardians’, touts, hawkers, and more. Bear in mind that you should wear a proper top, a sarong, and a sash.

The best visiting times of the day are in the early morning and in the evening as the complex is much quieter during those hours.

The official guides are easily identifiable with their symmetrically patterned traditional Batik shirts. The service is not free, though not expensive at all either considering how big the complex is. You are, however, not obliged to hire a ‘temple guardian’ for a tour around the complex.

If you are invited for a blessing then a donation will be expected.

Skimpy clothes are not advised and sarong as well as sash can be rented. They’re also available for purchase outside, but bargaining is recommended.

Women on their period are forbidden to enter the temple complex.

Don’t forget to change money in more urban areas as the rates here are not so good.

Women's teams contribute to their athletic departments

What percentage of income that women's teams contribute to their athletic departments?

According to the financial data that the universities must file with the Department of federal education, Division institutions had income by a total of $ 8.7 million over the 2009-2010 academic year. 55 Per cent of the income generated by men's teams, women's teams, 15 per cent and an additional 30 per cent of income was not allocated by genre or sport. And, as pointed out by many readers, football and basketball are normally the teams only generating a benefit: sports most other men also lose money.

This poses a difficult dilemma for many athletic programs. It is necessary to continue to provide generous support to the teams that generate income of the majority for the Department, especially at this juncture. However, the sports departments are not nonprofit entities, and, in fact, only a small minority breaks even financially, the most dependent on grants from the University. More athletic directors have spoken to say that your program's mission is not to generate a profit but to provide a quality experience to all men and women who compete in teams, regardless of whether teams turn a profit or not.
