See this Craigslist posting about a documentary to feature ni-Vanuatu learning from American hosts:

KEO FILMS, a UK-based company is producing a documentary for a reputable US cable network in which a small group of tribesmen from the island of Vanuatu (South Pacific) will visit with several different families throughout the US this fall.

Hi everyone.

I have a Peace Corps Partnership for the school I taught at last year,
Vila North School. Peace Corps Partnership is a programme where
volunteers submit small projects to be funded to Peace Corps, and then
Peace Corps puts the description of the project on the Peace Corps
website so that people in America can help the volunteer and donate to
the project.

My project is for three computers for the school. I need about
$4,000.00 for the project. Donations are tax deductible. So donate

In my first week in Washington, DC in June 2008, I met up with some RPCVs from Vanuatu. All of us were from different groups and had COS’d at different times beginning in 2000. One of the RPCVs, Mike Hendric (Matevulu College, 1999-2001?), had a great surprise for us.

Mifala i bin shek from se wan woman blong Vanuatu i kam! Eslyn Kaltongga, Mike’s student from Matevulu, was in DC on an internship. She is currently studying Journalism and Communications at the University of HI. Of course, she credited to one of the reasons why she is here in the US studying is because of her Mista Mike.

Needless to say, we were all captivated in meeting this strong, independent woman. It was a real great honor to have a touch of the past meet our present. Vanuatu’s future is looking brighter day by day!

On her last night in DC, we, of course, had a kakae for Eslyn complete with kava from Black Sands (www.nakamalathome.com), homemade laplap manioc, and kumala to the sounds of string band.

Eslyn, mifala sori long yu be mbae mifala lukim yu bakegen!

Chad and I feel so out of it when it comes to RPCV’s. We have barely talked to anyone in the last few years-maybe that’s because I lost my address book before I put it all on the computer. So, if you didn’t get a Christmas card from us last year -and I usually send you one- please don’t feel bad. We would love to chat and catch up with everyone we were there with. Drop us a line. Hey there, I served on Paama Aelan and in Luganville, Santo. I adopted my son Jason as a baby on Santo in November of 2004. I am looking for kastom stories to tell him, since he is now getting old enough to demand bedtime stories. I’ve got a few that I wrote down while I was in service, but I’d like to expand the number. Any kastom stories would be greatly appreciated. His birth family has sent me a few, and I’m already pestering Wan Smol Bag & the National Cultural Museum on this issue, but after 6months of effort with little result….I figure RPCV’s may be the way to go. North Carolina storian dinner

After more than two years, Erin and I finally found a time to gather with some of the North Carolina Vanuatu RPCVs. Evan and Maggie Baker (Evan was based in Vila, and Maggie was a VSO in Vila) and Bryan and Beth Roy (Bryan lived on Paama) joined me and Erin (we were on Paama) for dinner last night. Bryan and Beth recently returned from a round-the-world trip and visit to Vila and Paama, and they had news and pictures to share: the Liro nakamal was gone, and in its place a grassy yard and a kava bar named The Six Horseshoes; little Ben Laycock is now a towering lad; there’s a new Au Bon Marche for groceries in Vila; marijuana is the trendy crop; and Tusker beer is as good as ever.

Jocelyn and Dona Sese weren’t able to join us (Dona is in Vanuatu, we hear) and Chad and Kristin Metzler, who live in Davidson, NC, were too far for this dinner, so we’ll be planning a summer lafet with laplap, pig, kava, powder, island dresses and more. If you’d like to join us, please do.
