Review: Olympus LS-10 WAV/WMA/MP3 Recorder

If I were to design my ideal compact field recorder, here is my wish list: It would be tiny yet rugged, have a decent pair of microphones with sturdy windscreens, and record both compressed and uncompressed audio at a variety of resolutions. I'd be able to set recording levels with a thumb wheel and operate the transport controls with one hand.

It would have acres of memory, run forever on replaceable batteries, transfer files to my computer at the highest possible speed, sound great, look cool, and fit inside the accessory pocket in my ukulele case. Oh, and I shouldn't have to take out a second mortgage to buy it.

Tall order? Maybe not when you consider the new Olympus LS-10.

Although this is its first high-resolution audio recorder, Olympus has been in the game for quite a long time. The company's pocket voice recorders are well regarded by many users. With the LS-10, it looks like Olympus was paying attention to what musicians and broadcasters want, too.

The LS-10 fits comfortably in your palm and makes barely a bulge in your shirt pocket. Despite the recorder's diminutive size, the display is large and the controls feel reassuringly solid. There is little wasted real estate, yet nothing feels cluttered.

The rear panel sports two tiny stereo speakers (handy for spot-checking recordings, though not powerful or hi-fi enough for serious listening), a metal insert for a camera tripod, and a large door for two AA batteries. Olympus claims battery life up to 20 hours; I can't dispute that because I'm still using the original batteries after almost two months! A jack for an optional power supply is located on the bottom.

Two slider switches for the low-cut filter and Hi/Lo microphone sensitivity are within easy thumb range on the right side. Above them is the sturdy little Rec Level wheel. Next come a pair of mini jacks for an external mic ("plug-in power" is available) and a line source.

On the left, a three-position slider turns the LS-10 on in a respectable four seconds (it takes slightly longer with a card inserted); moved the other way, it serves as a hold switch, locking out all the function buttons. Next comes a small flexible plastic door covering a mini-USB port. The LS-10 supports hi-speed USB 2.0, though transfers may slow down depending on the removable memory card you choose. Even better, the LS-10 runs off USB bus power. It will not double as an audio interface or record while connected, however.

Rounding out the left-hand side are a volume wheel for playback volume and a 1/8-inch jack for headphones. Watch out — the headphone amp gets loud!

You'll also find a slot for a memory card; SD and SDII cards up to 8GB are supported. But you don't need one to start recording, because the LS-10 also has 2 gigs of internal memory. I really like the flexibility of recording to internal or removable memory; it's handy for organizing files or quickly adding memory in the field.

Face the Music

The front panel is clean and well laid out. Stop and Rec buttons — one press puts you in record-ready, a second commences recording, and a third pauses the recorder — flank a red peak LED. The LED blinks rapidly if you're running out of memory — nice. A four-position click wheel with a multi-function button at the center serves double duty as cursor and transport controls.

Four small buttons run along the bottom; three call up the Menu, Folder/File lists, or repeat a short section of an audio file. The fourth button, labeled Fn, accesses an assignable menu function with a single button press. I set it to jump to the recording setup screen, eliminating a couple of button presses. Other options include turning the LED on or off, selecting internal or removable memory, toggling between normal and automatic recording gain, stepping through the various recording or playback effects, etc. It's a great little feature that I came to love.

The menu is well thought out; you navigate between sections using icons on the left side or scroll through menu choices on the right. For instance, selecting a little microphone icon jumps you to the Rec section; a wrench leads you to a menu of handy tools for setting the date and time, protecting individual files for accidental erasure, etc. No matter where you are in the menu, a quick press on the Stop button jumps you back to the main screen.

Would that were so in the List screens, where you select one of five folders for recording or playback (there's an additional folder for audio downloaded from a computer). From the List screen, pressing Stop brings up a momentary display showing the time and date; the only way to get back to the main screen is to press FF. Worse, if you enter the List screens via a menu option (as when you select memory location), you can find yourself in a loop that keeps jumping between the Menu and List screens until you remember to press FF. Not exactly intuitive, that.

The main display is easy to read with large meters active during recording and playback. Additionally, there is information about the file type and sample rate, elapsed time, current folder, the number of files in that folder, and the battery status. When recording, the LS-10 also shows the remaining recording time at the current settings; in playback the file length is displayed.

To save batteries, or for stealth recording, you can turn off the display's backlight.

How's It Sound?

The LS-10 ships with everything you need to start recording, including the batteries. Rooting through the box, I was happy to spy a couple of foam windscreens that clip securely to the mics. Several other recorders I've reviewed skimp on this important accessory.

The LS-10 is one of the easiest recorders I've ever used. The transport (if I can use such a term for a random-access device) and level-setting will feel familiar to anyone who has even a passing knowledge of recording. I auditioned different audio file formats and resolutions, changed folders, etc., all without cracking the manual.

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This digital recorder is exactly what I was looking for and more. Trying to catch my fast talking boss AND understand his request (engineer) will be much easier.

As a side note, I turned on the TV to Ghost Hunters one evening and laughed to myself when I realized they were using the Olympus Digital Recorder to capture the voices of ghost. It just might work.

" Great recorder, far superior to comparable Sony. I've owned this recorder for about four months, using it mostly for interviews (I'm a journalist). It's far and away the best DVR I've ever owned. Very simple to use, decent battery life (love that it can recharge through USB port while plugged in), good mic pickup, super-easy file transfer with built-in USB dongle. It's even better when used with the small Olympus noise-cancelling mic.

As previous reviewers have noted, this recorder has some clear advantages over the Sony UX71. It's much more intuitive to operate, and better built. But the main advantage is battery life: The UX71, which I unfortunately bought, routinely kills a battery in one day, even when set to "hold." It's worthless, and Sony hasn't been too anxious to do a thing about it, beyond offering exchange for a refurb (I suspect its endemic with the model, and haven't bothered.) I was a Sony user for a long time, but no more.

The sole advantage to the Sony, in my mind, was the fact that it records in MP3 format, which is handy for web posting, etc. But that's not an advantage anymore. Olympus has posted a firmware update for this recorder on its web site that gives you the option of recording in .wma or mp3. So there you go. A much-appreciated update. Download it. "

"Excellent Digital Voice Recorder. I just ordered this Olympus VN-8100PC digital voice recorder a few days ago and so far it has worked pretty good. I had an older digital voice recorder, but it didn't have a USB port, so I couldn't transfer files to my PC which is what I wanted, so I bought this. I've made several recordings and transferred them to my PC and they sound good, all you do is plug it into a USB port on your computer and then you can access this device just like a USB thumb drive.

I decided to go with this one because the older Olympus model VN-6200PC on Amazon has over a hundred reviews that are mostly all positive, and this one is simply an updated more advanced model with 2GB of memory instead. I checked the Olympus website and this one is very close to the 6200PC model that everybody loves, but with more features and an easier looking layout. The most important difference is the ability to record in MP3 format, the 6200PC can only record in WMA format. Also this one has 2GB of memory, so you can record for a long time, and if the memory fills up you can just transfer the files off the device to your computer.

As far as the layout of the on screen menu settings and buttons on the device, it is super easy. I didn't even read the instruction manual to figure everything out, I just played around with it for a few minutes and everything was pretty much self explanatory, it's designed so anybody can use it without having to click through a bunch of settings and crap just to get it to work.

If you buy this device, one very handy accessory to get is the Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device. It sells here on Amazon for $[...] or so and has a ton of reviews all rating it very positive. I bought it with mine and it works perfectly, I recorded a phone conversation earlier today to test it out and it worked great. The main purpose of buying this digital voice recorder was really to record phone conversations using the TP7. All you do is plug the TP7 into the mic input on your digital voice recorder, and then put the ear piece into your ear and when you are on the phone talking to someone hit "record" then when you are done hit "stop" and that is it. The Olympus digital recorders only record in mono, so that means when you play back your phone conversation on your computer speakers/headphones you will only hear sound from one speaker/headphone, but that really isn't a problem or big deal since it's only a conversation you're listening too and not music.

As a side note, hopefully more people realize the VN-6200PC is an old model and do not buy it instantly just because it has a ton of good reviews. I almost did that until I went to the Olympus website and realized this 8100PC model was newer and better then the 6200PC and cost pretty much the same.

"Very good field recorder. I'm really happy with my Olympus LS-11; it suites my purpose perfectly i.e. recording small and large vocal groups, band-rehearsals and acoustic guitars. In my view the strength of the LS-11 is:

On the weakness side:

"VN-7600PC THE BEST THING I ever bought for medical school. This is a GREAT little recorder. I use it to record lectures (with permission from my professors, of course) in medical school. I can let Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN 7600PC sit there on the podium for hours of lecture, and then use it for hours of playback, without any change in the battery life. I love the ample volume controls during playback and the ability to adjust the recording sensitivity (hi/lo, for differing distances from the sound source). I also LOVE being able to playback faster or slower, depending on my taste. Getting through an hour's worth of lecture in less time is WONDERFUL. So is slowing down the playback of a lecture that seemed to go just a little too quickly. Plus, Digital Voice Recorder is lightweight, durable, and I can lock it so that it's not always turning on/off when I throw Digital Voice Recorder in my backpack. No problems with capacity or file storage on-board. Great little unit, and I honestly have no complaints yet. I feel like anyone who needs a digital recorder would love this. Don't hesitate to buy! Olympus has just introduced its new Olympus VN-6200PC Digital Voice Recorder. The Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC is identical to the nearly 1 year old Olympus VN-5200PC Digital Voice Recorder in function and features, but now has twice the memory, 1 GB, for the same suggested list price as the VN-5200PC. The Olympus Digital Voice Recorder Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC, VN-5200PC and VN-3200PC Digital Voice Recorders all operate exactly the same and are boxed with the same "Instructions" sheet for all 3. The VN-5200PC I own is great. The VN-6200PC is even better!

If you need a quality, low-cost, monaural digital voice recorder that easily records and transfers Windows Media Audio (WMA) files fast via a USB 2.0 connection to your PC without any extra software, the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC is a great choice. It outperforms the popular Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder in nearly every way...more storage, longer recording time, longer battery life, more folders and files, greater frequency response, greater output level. Over 444 hours in LP record mode, and you still get almost 71 hours in HQ mode...that's 200-13,000 Hz range, good enough to hum or strum your spur of the moment musical inspirations if you are into songwriting. It also has variable voice activation and a dynamic display of audio recording level. About the only feature the VN-4100PC has which the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC doesn't is timer recording and playback if you really need it.

It does take a couple of readings of the instructions and a little practice to familiarize yourself with operating the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC, but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and intuitive to use. There are 5 folders, each able to hold up to 200 files. Every time you start and stop a recording, a new file is automatically created. The files and folders are easily transferred to your PC via the USB connection. Just plug in to your PC, and your Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC automatically looks just like any disc drive or storage device on your PC with a Windows directory displaying the files and folders. Just "select all" and move or copy the files to a disc drive to save the files in one operation. Playing the files just involves clicking on the audio file icons, and Windows Media Player pops up and goes to work. You can easily play all of the files in a folder in sequence with just one click on a Windows playing option that automatically creates a playlist of all the files. The files can easily be renamed both on the disc drive and on the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC. They can be any name you choose. They don't have to have any specific format. Any file of any type with any name (text files, PDF files, etc.) can also be copied to and stored on the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC. However, for an audio file to play on the VN-6200PC, it must be a WMA file and it must be copied or moved into one of the five specific audio folders on the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC.

Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC has no editing features. You can easily place and remove index markers to quickly return to specific file locations in playback mode, but any file editing must be done on the computer. While Windows Media Player allows you to select and sequence the files via a playlist, you will need to purchase separate software if you wish to edit or combine the files or convert them to other audio file formats such as MP3 or WAV.

One annoying feature of the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC is that the earphone jack is monaural and, without an adapter, not compatible with the stereo headphones everybody has for their iPods or their old Walkman players. That's just plain stupid on the part of Olympus. Even my old mono GE microcassette recorder has a stereo earphone jack. A 1/8" stereo jack to 1/8" mono plug adapter can be bought at Radio Shack for $2.99 to solve the problem, a cost and inconvenience that should not be necessary. Another gripe is that the USB cable provided by Olympus with the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC is only 6 inches long. This is okay for a laptop computer, but a USB extension cable may be necessary for your desktop computer. Target sells the 6 ft. Belkin USB Extension Cable (A-A) for $7.99. A type-A plug to 5-pin mini-plug USB cable can also be used.

In short, the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-6200PC is for notes, meetings, lectures, dictation, emailing audio messages, and even songwriting. Its features are basic, price is modest, and the value is good. If you are into live music and MP3, news interviews, need stereo and fancy features, then go for the higher-priced Olympus digital recorders."

"Perfect for Group Sessions. I got this recorder to record tutoring sessions which I do with local high school students. After installing the batteries and setting the date and time, I did a quick test recording. I set the recorder on a table in Record mode. My position at the board was about 12' away, with an angle to the mike of about 45d. The distance to the student area was 5-7', with the mike angle from 45d to a full 90d. Tests from all of these areas provided a clear Playback.

I then plugged the USB cable into the recorder and the computer (Windows XP Home, USB 1.1). After automatically installing standard drivers, Explorer showed the device as just another drive - like a flash drive. Using Explorer, I copied the test WMA file onto my hard drive, then opened Windows Media Player and played it back - perfect, with excellent volume and clarity. To finish, I just right-clicked the recorder drive in Explorer and clicked on "Eject", unplugged the recorder from the USB port, and that was that.

All this using only the factory-default settings. I'll play with those later."

"No bells and whistles, but who needs them. Back to basics. This Olympus Digital Voice Recorder VN-5000 works just fine for recording mock therapy sessions in my psychology class. It's easy to use. The sound reproduction is clear. It has a long battery life.

I'm not a technie or a teenager. So navigating digital equipment isn't organic to me. I need instructions. The more cookbook-like, the better. Before I bought this model, I considered purchasing a similarly priced Sony model because after all I had a number of other Sony products in my audio visual stable. But, eek, reviews of Sony's murky instructions scared me off. The Olympus instructions sheet isn't the best--pictures instead of words. But when I got stuck, I called the Olympus toll-free line, and got through right away to a friendly customer service rep, who easily resolved my issue.

One nit: The "Hold" button is really the on/off switch. I'm not sure why Olympus doesn't call it like it is.And a caveat: You can't transfer recordings from this DVR directly into a computer. You'll have a pay more to get this feature."

It's the first recording device I ever owned and I'm extremely happy with this purchase.

WHY BUY SUCH A THING:

1. if you have watched THE SIXTH SENSE, you should have remembered that Dr.

Malcolm Crowe used such a device to record down any thoughts he had after he met

his patients. IMHO, since most of my inventive ideas pop into my mind when it's most

inconvenient for me to take notes of such fleeting thoughts, a recorder is by

far the best device for taking them down. Even if most cellphones nowadays have some

functionality similar to a recorder, their performance and usability are much

worse.

2. David Allen's masterpiece about time management, Getting things done, also

recommends various kinds of in-boxes to store all the internal commitments you

may have anytime and anywhere, and a recorder is much easier to carry with you

than paper and pen and to use in various places out of office.

Summary:

The DS-2400 is one of Olympus' newest voice recorders optimized for dictation. It provides the ability to record conversations under a variety of conditions with excellent quality. Its intuitive controls make operation so simple that the 8 (2"x4") page Quick Start Guide is all you'll need to start recording and playing back conversations of all kinds. The included DSS Player software supports both Windows (2000, XP, and Vista - including Vista Ultimate 64-bit) and Macintosh (OS X 10.39 - 10.5.6).

Details:

I have owned a voice recorder once before, but it finally got lost, so it was time to do the research to find a replacement. A number of things impressed me, on paper, about the DS-2400

- Brand new model from Olympus (so a long life of support is expected)

- Compact model with all the features I wanted (built-in mono microphone and speaker; 3.5 mm min-jacks for connecting external mono or stereo mics and speakers) clear, easy to ready display and controls; save recordings as new files or append or insert recordings into existing files, multiple folders for storing files; long battery life [24 hours in QP mode, 30 hours in SP mode, 13 hours in playback mode]; settable recording quality; Voice activation; and dictation vs. conference modes)

- Uses removable storage (SD or SDHC cards, from 512 MB to 16 GB), and supports 77 hours of "Quality" (QP) recording in the included 1 GB card, or a whopping 157 hours 50 minutes of "Standard" (SP) recording

- Included DSS Player software supports the latest PCs and Macs

After purchase (and swift delivery from Amazon), I decided to give the DS-2400 a full test:

- Initial setup and use of the recorder was so easy I really didn't need to read the 8-page Quick Start Guide. The 62 page Instructions manual (with sections in English, French and Spanish) is really only needed as a reference.

- Voice quality is excellent. I am not using dictation transcribing software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred or MacSpeech Dictate, but do understand that both of these products (which use the same "Dragon" engine) can be used to transcribe these files.

- The software installed and operated flawlessly on my two toughest test machines: a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with Service Pack 2 (Public Preview v. 113), and a Mac Pro running Mac OS X Server v. 10.5.6 (developer beta release). The software is visually and functionally equivalent on both platforms, with differences reflective of the underlying system. For example:

+ a reboot is required when installing on the PC, but not the Mac,

+ the Mac version can convert recordings only to AIFF files (but there are lots of free utilities available to convert from this to other formats), while the PC version can convert to WAV and WMA formats (with a variety of bits per second and Hz supported in each format)

- The DS2 format files used natively by the DS-2400 provide an amazing amount of compression without noticeable loss of quality. Here are some comparisons of file sizes for a 25 minute 35 second-long real-world speakerphone conversation I recorded in QP mode using a stereo microphone (Olympus ME51S):

+ DS2 (DSD Pro native) format @ 28 kbps, 16 khz, mono: 5,311 KB or 5.19 MB

+ WAV (PCM format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 bit, mono: 66,112 KB or 64.56 MB

+ WMA format @ 22.05 kHz, 16 kbps, mono: 3,136 KB or 3.06 MB (compared to DS2, there is a theoretical loss of quality in this format, but I couldn't hear it - I'll be storing my files in this format, to save space)

+ AIFF format (no options provided): 47,972 KB or 48.84 MB

The recorder can be used without a PC. Stand-alone, you can:

- Choose the language of the displays on the recorder (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Russian)

- Set date, time, and date & time format (used to date/time stamp recording files)

- Change the various modes of the recorder (LED display & contrast, backlighting, conference or dictation mode, Voice activation on or off, etc.)

- Create new recording files

- Record over, insert recordings, or append recordings to these files

- File recordings in one of 5 (A through E) default folders

- Rewind or fast-forward through files

- Play files back at normal or increased speed

You'll need your PC for some more refined actions:

- Change the name of the default folders to something meaningful to you (e.g., Personal, Work, Vendors, ...)

- Change the name of the "recorder" (added to the files along with the date/time stamp to something other than "DS-2400" (e.g., JOESPERRAZZA)

- Convert files from DS2 format to another, for input into a speech to text conversion program or for sharing with others

Caveats:

- Don't buy this if you're expecting to play MP3s - it is not designed for that

- Don't expect to record music - the recorder itself and the DS2 format are optimized to record and playback human speech:

+ QP mode: 16 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 7,000 Hz frequency response

+ SP mode: 12 kHz sampling frequency, 200 - 5,000 Hz frequency response

(I'll be recording everything in QP mode, due to the incredible amount of information you can store on just 1 GB SD chip)

"Great package. I use minicassette recorders on interviews a lot, and this one is a great recorder for the price. It's small enough to fit in a shirt pocket (and nicely slim as well), and the ergonomics are good: easy to play back, fast-forward, etc. It has all the basic controls you need. I can't speak for the sound relative to others, but for voice, it's more than good enough. It picks up voices quite distinctly even in a relatively noisy environment. I also like the battery indicator, so I always know when I need to bring extra batteries, which last a pretty long time. I also can't speak for reliability, but I've had no problems in the six months I've been using it. The only caveats are that the microphone/earphone jack is smaller than ones used by other recorders, so you need an adapter or a mike/earphone with small plugs, and that it doesn't come with an AC power supply. But overall, it's great."

" Good Microcassette, But Has Drawbacks. This recorder is another good Pearlcorder by Olympus, but it drops some of the features I found really useful that were in the old L200. I use mine for note taking and general short (less than an hour) recording chores. On the old L200, you had an Index Marker to, but on that recorder the indexer stopped the tape motion when ever it hit an index mark. On the J500, it only gives you a loud sound and you must release the rewind/fast forward button to hear the recording. Also the fast forward speed is so slow that the index mark doesn't sound and so you lose fast forward index search. It only works in rewind. (This might be the result of changes made to the rewind/fast forward system. It's a sliding lever now not buttons as on the old L200.) It's not a bad little recorder, I think the changes made to the tape handling chassis have really reduced the overall value of this recorder. Another thing that one needs to remember is the J500 only has auto shut off in playback and recording mode only,and at end of tape, but NOT in rewind or fast forward as the old L200 use to. So if you place it in rewind or fast forward and something comes up in which you forget it's running, it will get to the end of the tape and doesn't turn off. (Not normally a bad problem, but just one more thing you lose from the L200.) I think dropping the more useful features, and changing the tape handling chassis reduced the overall value of this recorder, especially since Olympus stopped making the L200. For that reason, it gets 4 stars instead of five."
