Señor Pico (Telephone 2468 0030 – Map) is a Mexican restaurant located on the lower floor of the Intercontinental Hotel in Shatti Al Qurum. It is a restaurant and a bar that regularly has live music playing.

Señor Pico is a pretty spacious restaurant with the bar on the left side of the restaurant and proper dining tables on the right side of the restaurant. We went early on a week day evening and the place was not too busy with a crowd that totally consisted of expats. The music at Señor Pico could be a little bit too loud if you sit too close to the band, so you should that in to consideration when you get seated.

Señor Pico’s food menu features a variety of starters, soups, salads, Mexican specialities, seafood and grills. It is licensed to serve alcohol and the only main dish that contained pork was clearly highlighted.

For the starter at Señor Pico we had “Calamares Fristos” (RO 4.500) which was a plate of fried calamari served with a green chili sauce. I thought that the calamari was a tiny bit too oily, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Señor Pico serves a variety of Mexican specialities in its main course section such as fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, etc. For my main I had the “Tacos de Res” (RO 4.000 – pictured above) which could be had with minced beef or chicken. I originally wanted to have chicken, but I was told that they were out of chicken tacos, so I had to go with the minced beef. The plate came with three hard shell tacos, a bit of salad, refried beans, and some rice along with the minced beef. I thought the portion was pretty generous and I liked the additional mix ins that you could add to your tacos, I thought that the beef was alright, but I felt that I would have enjoyed this more if I had chicken tacos instead.

My friend on the other hand had a Pollo Costeno (RO 3.500 – pictured below) which basically was a grilled chicken breast that came with vegetables and curado sauce. He enjoyed his dish thoroughly.

Fir desserts Senor Pico offers a fruid salad, a banana split, a crepes and a chocolate cake. We went for the Volcan Chocolate Cake (RO 3.000) which came with vanilla ice cream, a few fruits and walnuts. I thought that the cake was really great, the ice cream was nice and the walnuts and fruits were a really great addition.

In total we had 1 starter, 2 main courses, 1 dessert and 1 bottle of water. Our bill came to RO 25.272.

I thought that the service at Señor Pico was good, the staff were friendly and cheerful, and our food came exactly as we ordered. I would have liked the food to come to us a little bit quicker, but I still thought that my experience at Señor Pico was pleasant.

Have you guys been to Señor Pico, what do you think of it?

Narenj Restaurant (Telephone: 9415 4154 , 9415 2152 – Map) is a new Irani buffet restaurant in Al Khuwair located right opposite the left side of Al Zawawi Mosque. If you are driving up the service road in Al Khuwair from McDonald’s towards Al Zawawi mosque you cannot really miss Narenj as it has one of the biggest and flashiest signboard on that road.

Narenj has a really nice location as there are a lot of parking spots around Al Zawawi mosque. The restaurant is also based on the first floor of the building and has glass walls all around the restaurant giving all its guests an awesome view of Al Zawawi mosque and the highway. The seating area inside the restaurant is also bright and quite nice with white leather seats and cool rotating platforms on some tables. There are also mini-tent like sections on the other side of the restaurant for those who prefer to sit on the ground. We visited very early on an evening of a week day and the restaurant was literally empty at the time of our arrival.

Narenj is primary a buffet restaurant that charges RO 10 per person for the buffet, but we decided to do a la carte and order from the menu instead of doing the buffet. The menu of Narenj isn’t structured well and it is clear that it has not been well thought through. The menu has a few types of rice, a few mixed grills, two types of salads, hummous, and soups. There isn’t really a starters or a mains section as everything is jumbled up together.

We thought we’ll try to have some logical structure to our order so we ordered a portion of hummous (RO 1.200) , a portion of youghurt and cucumber (RO 0.800) and a salad (RO 0.900) – thinking they would come before the rest, but they came at the same time as our mains which were a Special Narenj Grill (RO 2.800) and a Mixed Kebab Grill (RO 4.200) which we ordered with a portion of Saffron Rice (RO 0.500) and a portion of Black-eyed peas rice (RO0.500).

The hummous we ordered came with a portion of rubbery cold bread that wasn’t really bad, but extremely boring. However, I still managed to enjoy the hummous and the yougurt, but I was not a big fan of the salad which came with a strange looking pink salad which we couldn’t figure out what it was made up of.

The Special Narenj Kebab turned out to be a skewer made up of mixed chicken and beef layered over each other, while the Mixed Grill basically had a chicken skewer and a beef skewer. I thought that they grills were extremely average and not memorable at all. The saffron rice on the hand was acceptable, but the black eye peas rice had an extremely strange dry texture and unpleasant.

In total we ordered 3 side dishes, 2 mixed grill dishes, 3 portions of rice, 3 drinks, and 1 small bottle of water. Our bill came to RO 13.200.

I thought that the food at Narenj was mediocre at best, probably just as expected of a buffet restaurant. It was such a let down because the location is great, the restaurant had a nice atmosphere and the staff seemed very cheerful and friendly. The fact that the menu of Narenj isn’t structured well is an indication that you probably should not bother looking at it and just go for a buffet if you want to come here.

I am not a big buffet fan and I do not think that I will be trying out Narenj again any time soon.

Have you guys been to Narenj? What do you think of it?

The SteakCompany (Telephone 2469 5903 – Map) is a steakhouse located in Bareeq Al Shatti Mall. The SteakCompany is located in the same spot as the now defunct Abala, but it is not owned or operated by the same people. The SteakCompany is relatively new and at the time of this review the restaurant has only been opening for dinner and not lunch.

The SteakCompany has mostly maintained the look and feel of Abala and looks really amazing withs glamourous lights and sleek furniture. The SteakCompany also has a few tables outside the restaurant, which dont necessarily have the greatest view, but I guess are still an option for smokers. We went early on a weekend evening and the restaurant was not crowded at all.

The menu of The SteakCompany offers starters, salads, sandwiches, steaks, and a grilled sea food and chicken section. For the starters we wanted to try to the Carpaccio and Calamari Rings, but neither of these starters were available, so we went for a plate of Garlic Prawns (RO 2.900) – which had jumbo prawns cooked in garlic and coriander sauce, and a plate of Boerewors (RO 2.000) – which was a South African sausage dish cooked in tomato salsa. I thought that the Prawns were good, but not very memorable, and I thought that the Boerewors on the other hand were quite special and really nice.

The steak section of menu of The SteakCompany is divided up into three categories, New Zealand angus beef, South African prime beef, and Australian black angus beef. Each of these beef types are offered in a variety of cuts such as New York Strip, Rib Eye, Filet Mignon, and T-Bone. The SteakCompany offers two sauces with its steaks, pepper mint and Argentinian chumichuri. Each steak is offered with vegetables accompanied by mash potatoes, chunky fries, or potato wedges.

I ordered a medium-well Australian Rib Eye (RO 13.900) with crunchy fries. Unfortunately my steak came as medium-rare, I informed the restaurant staff about this, and they offered to take it back to the kitchen to cook it more, but I chose to try it out as I have never tried medium-rare or rare meat before, after starting to eat my steak though I discovered that it wasn’t consistently cooked at all as it was medium-well on one side and rare on the other, which was a bit frustrating even though I liked the chumchiri sauce and the little vegetables that came with the steak.

The other three people who came with me for dinner did not have the same problem with their steak and enjoyed what they had more than I did.

For the desserts The SteakCompany offers Chocolate Fondant, Cheesecake, and Date Cake. We went for a Date Cake (RO2.200) that came with ice cream on the side which we enjoyed.

In total we ordered 2 starters, 4 steaks, 1 dessert, 2 soft drinks, and 2 fresh juices. Our bill came to RO 50.295.

Besides the incidence of not having my steak cooked well, I thought that the service at the SteakCompany was still very good. The staff seemed to be friendly and helpful and our food did not take a lot of time to arrive.

I am still willing to give the SteakCompany another chance even though my steak wasn’t cooked properly. I am hoping that the problem I had was just an isolated incident.

Have you guys been to the SteakCompany? What do you think of it?

Slider Station (Telephone: 2469 8990 – Map) is a brand new burger restaurant located in Oasis by the Sea Mall. Slider Station is a Kuwaiti franchise founded by the same people behind B+F, the insanely popular burger restaurant in Bareeq Al Shatti. The restaurant is located inside Oasis by the Sea Mall right next to the indoors seating for Just Grilled and Chado.

Slider Station is very similar to B+F and has a lot of similar items on the menu, but the biggest difference between the two is, as the name suggests, the focus of Slider Station on sliders – the mini burgers.

I wasn’t allowed to take photographs of the seating area inside Slider Station for some reason, but they didn’t mind having me take pictures of the food I ordered.

The seating area in Slider Station is divided into two parts, one is for the bar that has the conveyer belt, and the other one is for regular tables. Unlike B+F, Slider Station is very spacious, has a lot of empty space, and seems more comfortable. The interior design of Slider Station is just as nice as B+F and has that garage industrial look going on, we sat at the bar to try out the conveyer belt experience and the seats were comfortable and had the right height. We should point out at this point that there is no difference between ordering food at the bar or from a table, the menu is exactly the same, but if you order from the bar you will have a number allocated to you and whatever you order will be delivered to around the conveyer belt with that number shown to indicate that this is your item.

The menu of Slider Station is divided into Silders, American Tapas, Salads, Burgers, Sides and Desserts. For starters we had a portion of Dynamite Nachos (RO 2.750) – the nachos version of the good old Dynamite Fries found at B+F, a Delta Force Fries (RO 2.950) – fries topped with melted jack, cheddar, jalapenos, grilled onions, west coast sauce, maple sticky buffalo chicken and red onions. The Dynamite Nachos were amazing, but I wasn’t a big fan of the fries which had a little bit way too many things for me to know exactly what I’m having.

We were also offered a complimentary plate of Moroccan Sensation Salad, which had lettuce, cabbage, edam cheese, caramlized onions, roasted almonds, and croutons. I really enjoyed the salad and thought that it was excellent.

For the main course we decided to try out some of the sliders, selecting what to have was a bit challenging because there are a lot of options and everything seems to be good. I ended up having a Wagyu Portobello slider with portebello and rosemary cream sauce (RO 2.500) and a Obama Slider (RO 0.950) which had a breaded fried chicken with maple buffalo sauce, red onions, jalapanos, and rocca. The size of these sliders was small and you can almost have them in a single bite, however, I thought two were enough cause we shared three different plates before we got to this.

It is worth nothing that Slider Station still offers regular burgers in addition to these sliders, and unlike B+F, all proper burgers are served with fries on the side.

For the dessert we tried the Oreo Crusted Fondant (RO 2.950) which came with white chocolate ice cream on the side with wasabi crumble. I thought that the fondant was amazing, it was warm and rich from the inside, and the white chocolate ice cream was excellent, I couldn’t really taste any of the wasabi, but just having it on top somehow added to the experience.

In total we ordered 2 starters, 4 sliders, one dessert, 2 drinks, and a bottle of water, our bill came to RO 18.150.

I thought that the service at Slider Station was excellent, the waiters were friendly, talkative and gave us suggestions on what to have. Our food also came exactly as we ordered, but it was a bit confusing when the sliders came because we were two people and we were given a single number on the conveyer belt, so it was a bit difficult to try to guess which slider was which.

I still managed to have a really great experience at Slider Station and will be looking forward to go there again.

Have you guys been to Slider Station, what is your favorite slider there?

I was recently invited by the Radisson Blu hotel in Al Khuwair to try out their restaurant “Al Tajin Grill” (Telephone: 2448 7777 – Map). Radisson Blu is located at the edge of Al Khuwair commercial area. Al Tajin Restaurant can be found on the left side of the ground floor of hotel.

The seating area in Tajin is spacious and has an elegant Omani theme that features a traditional wooden ceiling and Omani antiques displayed around the restaurant. We went to Al Tajin on a week day and the crowd seemed to be a mix of expatriate couples and older Omani couples. It was not very crowded and generally quiet.

The name and theme of Al Tajin might create some confusion because Al Tajin is associated with Moroccan cuisine, the theme inside the restaurant on the other hand is traditional Omani which might indicate that it is serving Omani food, but the restaurant doesn’t serve either and focuses only on steaks and other grills.

The concept of Al Tajin is that it serves a starter buffet, a main to be ordered from a menu, and then desserts to be self-served from a dessert station. You can also add an extra RO 7.000 to have unlimited glasses of beer, wine, or a collection of non-alcoholic drinks.

The starters buffet of Al Tajin is your typical Middle Eastern/Lebanese starter set with hummous, tabouleh, fattoush, and others, and while it was nice, I cannot really say that it was special or even memorable. I was also quite irritated by the fact that actual Lebanese bread was nowhere to be found – I looked at the bread station but they had some buns and no Lebanese bread, it must have been an issue at that specific night because it doesn’t make any sense to serve Lebanese starters without Lebanese bread.

The mains of Al Tajin basically consist of a variety of grilled seafood dishes and steaks. I had the special “Al Tajin Fisherman’s Platter” which consisted of grilled prawns, fish and lobster. I thought that all the items on my platter were perfectly made, rich in flavor and large in portion. I also enjoyed the grilled vegetables that came on the side as well. My friend on the other hand had a fancy “Grilled Striploin of Wagyu Beef” which he enjoyed, but like all steak places in Oman, he ordered to have his steak cooked to medium, but it came as the Omani version of medium which is medium well.

Desserts at Al Tajin are served from the dessert station which had a few varieties of cakes, chocolate mousse, and some fruit salad. I personally was not very impressed by the variety served, I tried the chocolate mousse which was nice but again not really memorable.

I thought that the service at Al Tajin was great, the waiters seemed to be friendly, cheerful, and gave some advice on what we should have. The food didn’t take a long time to get to our table and it came exactly at we ordered.

The variety of grills at Al Tajin is good and the platter I had was excellent. I wasn’t a big fan of the starters or the desserts though. I would have certainly preferred to order a starter or a dessert from a menu to have it made specifically for me if they offered that option but they don’t. However, I still had a very pleasant experience and I recommend this place to those looking for a high end steak and grills restaurant.

Shang Thai (2455 4774 – Map) has recently opened its second outlet in The Wave Muscat. I reviewed the original branch of Shang Thai in Al Khuwair in 2009 and it has been one of my favourite Thai places in town ever since, I was quite excited to come and try their fancy new branch in The Wave.

Shang Thai The Wave is located in the same commercial area of the The Wave next to Al Fair, Costa Coffee, and WHSmith. The place still remains undiscovered by many people and on the two of my visits to Shang Thai the place was quiet with a few customers other than our table. The seating area of Shang Thai is sleek, beautiful and feels nice even though there are no windows looking outside unlike their branch in Al Khuwair.

The menu of Shang Thai The Wave currently is a shorter version of the menu at their Al Khuwair branch, I was informed by the waiter that in the upcoming weeks the rest of the menu would be added to The Wave branch. For some reason we were not given the usual complimentary prawn crackers at our last visit even though the dips were there. For the starter we had a plate of tofu tempura – Tou Hu Tod (RO 2.700) which came with a small portion of greens on the side and a dip which I really enjoyed.

For the main course at Shang Thai The Wave we had a plate of Szechwan Chili Prawns (RO 6.200) – a prawn dish cooked with chilis and spicy szechwan sauce and a plate of Phad Krapao Gai (RO3.400) – chicken cooked with basil and mixed Thai spices. The mains at Shang Thai are not served with rice or noodles, so you have to order any of these separately, we ordered a plate of Khao Phad Je (RO 2.600) which basically was vegetable Thai fried rice. I thought that everything we had was excellent, especially the Szechwan Chili Prawns which were nicely made and spicy to the right point!

We didn’t get a chance to try any of the desserts at Shang Thai during my most recent visit to it, but I usually go for their Tempura Ice Cream which is quite nice.

In total we ordered 1 starter, 2 main courses, 1 bowl of rice, and 1 large bottle of water. Our bill came to RO 15.500.

I thought that the service at Shang Thai was good, the food didn’t take too long to be delivered to our table, and even though it was a bit hard to get a waiter to get our bill to us, when someone eventually did he was cheerful and pleasant to deal with.

The only thing that annoys me about Shang Thai is that they never offer a Omani person chopsticks to use, probably because they think Omani people don’t know how to use them or something, but they would automatically bring some to “white customers”! Anyway, I always end up asking them to bring me chopsticks and they go and bring them straight away.

I still really like Shang Thai, highly recommended for lovers of Thai food, and yeah, if you are Omani you will have to ask them to bring you chopsticks if you want some.

Chado (Telephone: 2469 1110 – Map) is a fancy tea lounge located in Oasis by the Sea mall in Shatti Al Qurum. It’s actual location is right next to Pizza Express inside Oasis by the Sea, but it also has seating area outside outlooking the ocean.

Chado looks extremely elegant and colorful from the inside with marble and woodwork and has a special private room where you can have a quiet meeting or just a little gathering over tea. However, the most awesome thing about the seating area at Chado is not the gorgeous indoor section, but the outdoor seating area outlooking the ocean. The place outside gets usually fully taken quickly in the late afternoon and at night, especially during the cooler times of the year.

The menu of Chado contains a variety of black teas, green teas, herbal teas, white teas, iced teas, and a collection of rare and speciality teas. Chado also serves a variety of Illy coffees, mocktails, juices and a few sandwiches and salads. During my visit to Chado I tried a few things such as the Illy Crema (pictured above) which was basically an Illy coffee frap topped with cream, I also tried the Tunisian Tea – a green tea with mint and pine nuts. Both of the things I tried were really great and I enjoyed having them.

The majority of drinks at Chado cost between RO 1.500 to RO 3.000. It is possible to order bigger tea pots to share the tea.

Having tea at Chado can be somewhat of a novelty as some teas are served in nice looking pots and glasses and are served with crystalized sugar stick, golden saffron sugar cubes, dried raspberries, or possibly something else different.

I enjoyed my time at Chado and I think that it’s a great hangout place for having a light hot drink.

Meji’s Aroy Thai is a fine dining restaurant with a spacious nice looking seating area. I have been to Meji’s twice and it was never really crowded, probably because even though the place is in Shatti Al Qurum, it is awkwardly located between Bareeq Al Shatti and Jawharat and Al Shatti making too easy to decide against going to and going to either of these places instead.

For starters Meji’s offers hot starters, salads, and soups. I had a Tom Yum soup – which is a spicy and sour prawn soup (RO 3.400), my friend had a Mixed Aroy Thai (RO 3.200) which had spring rolls, prawn tempura, and chicken satay. My soup was extremely spicy but I still really liked it, my friend thought that the mixed starter was a nice way to try the different things offered by Meji’s and quite liked everything that he got.

The For main courses Meji has a selection of curry dishes, deep fried and steamed dishes, wok dishes, and rice or noodles dishes. The way the menu is designed is that it lists the sauce and method of cooking and then you select whether or not you have to it for beef, chicken, seafood, or vegetables. We had a Pad Prik Kaeng with chicken – a red curry paste wok dish with chicken (RO 3.800) and a Pad Num Prik Pao with beef which basically was stir fried meat with thai chili paste (RO 3.800). We also ordered a plate of vegetable Khao Pad fried rice (RO 3.000) on the side to have with our mains. I thought that both dishes were well done and full of flavor, the beef was a little bit spicier than what we expected, but we still enjoyed it nonetheless.

For the dessert we had aKhao New Mamuang (RO3.200) - ie a dish of banana tempura served with ice cream topped ice cream which looked very pretty and tasted extremely delicious – especially the ice cream.

For the drinks we had a smoothie and a Thai ice tea, I tried the Thai ice tea at Meji’s in the past and I wasn’t a big fan, but that’s probably because I’m not an ice tea person, the smoothie I tried this time was great.

In total we ordered 2 starters, 2 main courses, 2 drinks, and 1 dessert. Our bill came to RO 25.000.

I thought that the service as Meji’s Aroy Thai was nice, the waitress we got didn’t speak very good English, but was still pleasant and cheerful and tried her best to help us order.

I really enjoyed my experience at Meji’s Aroy Thai and would recommend going to it to anyone looking for a nice upscale Thai restaurant to go to.

TGI Friday’s (Telephone: 2448 8899 – Map) an American tex-mex casual dining restaurant located in Al Khuwair. Friday’s is located in the City Seasons Hotel right on the highway opposite the Ministries District in Al Khuwair.

The seating area in TGI Friday’s is spacious and looks very nice with many articles of pop culture references hung on the walls all over the place. The restaurant has only opened very recently and many people are excited to finally have it in town so the place is usually extremely crowded for dinner and it is very likely to wait for a while before you get seated.

The menu of TGI Friday’s will look extremely similar to anyone who has been to Chili’s in Oman. It features a collection of fried starters such as chicken wings, nachos, and chicken strips, along with nachos, soups, and salads. For main courses, TGI Friday’s offers burgers, sandwiches, chicken mains, seafood mains, pastas, steaks, and fajitas.

I tried a variety of starters at TGI Friday’s in previous visits and on my very last visit I tried a fajita nachos which was surprisingly good, the nachos were not too crunchy and the toppings were excellent. It was probably the best starter I had at TGI fridays as I tried the platter before and the chicken strips which I didn’t like much at all.

For the main course I had a buffalo taco (pictured above) which basically had two chicken tacos served in soft tortila bread and came with a side of French fries. The tacos were a little bit large in size and messy, but I still successfully managed to have them without making a huge mess, I can’t say that this was the best taco I had in town, but it was still pretty good. On the other hand a friend of mine had a salad as a main course which she didn’t like much and thought that the greens in it were not fresh at all.

I cannot remember the name of the dessert we had, but it was basically a chocolate cake topped with ice cream and caramel served in a glass. We thought the caramel was a little bit too much, but we still enjoyed it.

We thought that the service at TGI Friday’s was OK, we did not face any serious problems with the staff and our food didn’t take too long to arrive.

I have been to TGI Friday’s three times now, and I think that their food is mediocre at best and is very inconsistent. The place is still super crowded at night as everyone in town is coming to try it out for the first time. If you have been waiting to give TGI Friday’s a shot, I advise you to wait until the hype dies off as by then hopefully the kitchen would have improved the quality of the food, in the mean time I suggest that you go to Chilis instead as the food they serve is almost identical.

Osan is a Yemeni restaurant located in Al Ghubra (Telephone: 9239 7557 – Map). If you are coming down from the Ghubra/Lulu Roundabout and going towards the 18th November Street, you take a left at the second traffic lights then turn left again to find Osan.

Osan is very similar to many of the Yemeni restaurants in town, and I thought that it had a much nicer seating area and could be a great introduction to someone who has never been to a traditional Yemeni restaurant. Osan has a few proper dining tables in the center of the restaurant, but nobody ever uses them as everyone coming to dine in Osan would prefer getting a cubicle to sit on the ground and eat using bare hands without cutlery.

The concept of most Yemeni restaurants is that each group of diners get a private room or a cubicle to sit on the floor and eat a Mandi dish with their bare hands. You usually do not get seated and instead must walk around to look for an empty cubicle for yourself, take your sandals off before you walk on the cubicle carpet, sit down, and wait for the waiter to come take your order.

Like the majority of Yemeni restaurants, Osan does not have a paper menu to hand to its customers, the cashier has a menu attached to his desk, but really when you go to such a restaurant you should not be asking for anything other than “Mandi”. Mandi is a special rice dish that you have with lamb meat or chicken prepared with a variety of Yemeni spices in an oven. As an alternative, the lamb meat or the chicken could be grilled on its own instead of being baked – this method of preparation is called “Madhbi”. Many Yemeni restaurants like Osan also serve chicken and meat Biryani.

Once the waiter arrives at your cubicle, you are expected to tell him what kind of Mandi you want and whether you want to have your meat or chicken prepared along with the Mandi or grilled on its own (AKA Madhbi). Depending on the number of people in your party, you could have separate plates for each on of you or they could have the dishes added together in one huge plate for everyone to eat from together.

We thought we’ll have a half Mandi rice with Madhbi chicken and a half chicken Biryani in a single plate for two people. It took them a few seconds to get our plate which came with a small plate for salad and a bowl of hot tomato sauce (chutney).

Expats not exposed to the culture of eating with your bare hands might find it daunting to try to eat such a dish without cutlery at Osan, but it is really easy as what you have to do is basically tear a piece of the chicken and then scoop some rice with your hand and have them together.

I thought that the Mandi at Osan was excellent and the Madhbi chicken was much more delicious than the chicken Biryani we had on the same dish.

In total we ordered two halves of a mandhi and one large bottle of water. Our bill came to RO 3.800.

There isn’t really an expectation of a customer service at a Mandi restaurant, but Osan seemed clean, tidy, and the food came really fast and was cooked well. I highly recommend it for someone looking for a quick Mandi dish in Al Ghubra.

What do you guys think of Yemeni mandi restaurants, do you have a favorite in town?
