Canada Wide Free Shingles Vaccines Needed![Editorial]

Ontario Government Free Seniors Shingles Vaccines Not Enough Impact!

Editorial Rant by Suzanne M. Sholer B.A. B.Ed.
This post contains my two cents on the Ontario government announcement of their funding free shingles vaccines for seniors age 65 to 70..
What do you think about this issue?
Be sure to add your voice to the discussion!
Shingles is a horribly painful condition to bear and providing free shingles vaccines Canada-wide could measurably improve our economy. The Ontario government is now funding free shingles vaccines for some seniors, however to make a real impact on health and employment insurance costs, a Canada-wide shingles strategy is needed.

So why does Canada need a nation-wide shingles prevention strategy?

Free Shingles Vaccine for Some Ontarians - Close But No Cigar!

The Ontario Government proudly announced they are generously funding Free Shingles Vaccine for Ontario Seniors, however the fine print reads - age 65 to 70.
What???
While, free shingles vaccines for some seniors is a step in the right direction, personally, I believe a national health shingles prevention strategy would save our government thousands of dollars IF the age range for the free vaccines were expanded, and an income test be applied.
Why?

Shingles Attacks People In the Work Force

First of all, The Public Health Agency of Canada recognizes people can get shingles at almost any age, and recommends the varicella vaccine for anyone over the age of 60, or even younger, if they have certain high risk factors.

Although any person who has had chickenpox can get shingles, most people who do so are older than 50 or have a weakened immune system. For example, a person might be susceptible if they have cancer, take medicines that weaken their immune system, or have HIV or AIDS, even if they are younger than 50. The best protection from shingles is vaccination. People can still get shingles after receiving the varicella vaccine but they are 4 to 12 times less likely to do so than if they haven’t been immunized.
The vaccine is recommended for most people 60 and older.
Some people should not receive the vaccine; for example, those with certain allergies or who are taking certain medications. A health professional can advise who should not be vaccinated due to contraindications to the vaccine. People between 50 and 59 years can request the vaccine from their health professional. Source - Public Health Agency of Canada Fact Sheet: Infectious Diseases - Herpes Zoster January 17, 2017.

Do you know anyone who has had shingles before the age of 60?
I do. My sister had shingles before she was 50 and could not bear to have anything touching her skin for months.

Some unfortunate people get shingles repeatedly for the rest of their lives.
Not making free vaccines available to people age 50 and up, or younger if certain high risk health conditions exist is short sighted.

Shingles Vaccine Cost Versus Sickness Benefits and CPP Payments

While a minor case of shingles can be expected to last some people get recurring bouts of shingles that can leave them debilitated for life.
Do you know how much it can cost the government in Unemployment Insurance sick benefits alone? Add to that the disruption of the workplace and retraining needed for a replacement employee, plus the family stresses that cause reactionary illness in family members. Then, if the person does not recover...
Well, you get the picture.
The Wynne government is releasing out a few meager drops of funding for healthcare where greater expenditure could actually SAVE us money.
It is time to stop blowing thousands on in vitro fertilization programs that inadvertently cause more stress on our health care budget when those children grow up.
Time to look at needs versus wants.
Not preventing shingles is irresponsible.
We NEED to reduce healthcare costs - not increase them.
Yes, I do have empathy for people who long to have a baby and are willing to go through invasive and sometimes painful treatments to have a child. However, letting people get such a horrific disease and not be able to function as productive members of society borders on criminal.
Oh, and why the income test?
If you have zillions stashed in the bank - you do not need a free anything. Put on your adult shoes and pay for your own shot!

Shingles Vaccine Now Free for [Some] Ontario Seniors

Provincial Program Helps Save Seniors Money and Stay Healthy
Ontario is reminding seniors who are turning 65 in 2017 that, in 2017 they will be eligible to get the shingles vaccine free of charge, saving them approximately $170 and helping them stay healthy. Seniors aged 65 to 70 can get the vaccine from their doctor or nurse practitioner. The vaccine greatly reduces the risk of developing shingles.
So why is the province funding free shingles vaccine for some seniors?

"Shingles can flare up later in life, most often when a person’s immune system is weakened due to age or as a result of other health problems." explained Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, affects more than 42,000 people every year in Ontario. People with shingles often experience pain, tingling, or itching and then a painful rash. This rash can last for a month or more and is often severe enough to interfere with daily activities. For some, complications from the virus can lead to serious health problems such as loss of vision and prolonged nerve pain.
How does the shingles vaccine help?

"The shingles vaccine lowers the risk of getting shingles significantly and thus reduces the chance of complications from this disease for people without medical contraindications. Eligible seniors are encouraged to get the free vaccine." explained Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

Expanding Ontario's publicly funded immunization program to help seniors stay healthy is part of the government's plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care, which is providing patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to stay healthy and a health care system that's sustainable for generations to come.
Did you know:

Ontario is the only jurisdiction in Canada that provides the shingles vaccine free of charge.
Approximately 850,000 seniors between the ages of 65 and 70 are eligible to receive the publicly funded shingles vaccine.
Approximately 200,000 doses of the publicly funded shingles vaccine have been distributed throughout Ontario since the program launched in September.
The shingles vaccine is also available in participating pharmacies. Patients who choose to receive the vaccine from a pharmacist will need a prescription from their primary care provider and will have to pay the pharmacy a fee for the vaccine.
Studies show that the vaccine is highly effective when seniors are vaccinated between the ages of 65 to 70. The program aligns with scientific and expert recommendations from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization and Ontario’s Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee on Immunization.
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.

Omemee Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips!

Omemee Mums Facebook group hot topic of discussion is where to take children trick-or-treating in Omemee.
There are three main schools of thought on this:

Visit subdivisions where house are closer together to get more candy with less walking. Unfortunately, this heavy traffic will yield mostly lollipops, because the total cost is so high.
Go to less populated areas where they have fewer visitors and give out larger treats. This can result in extra gas costs, or very tired feet.
Only visit homes of people you know. This can be tricky when you're new in an area.

Whichever choice you make, Ontario Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca, offers some timely tips to keep your family safe on Halloween.

What tips?

Here is the news release:

Keep The Roads Safe for Trick-Or-Treaters

"Halloween is a festive time for all of us in Ontario and especially for kids. I encourage drivers and pedestrians to be aware and stay alert. Let’s all do our part to make this Halloween a great, safe one." — Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation

Be Alert and Follow the Rules of the Road this Halloween

As another spooktacular Halloween approaches, Ontario is reminding drivers and pedestrians to be aware and stay safe while trick-or-treating. Excited ghosts, goblins and ghouls are roaming the streets after dark on Halloween and may forget safety rules.
Drivers are reminded to follow these safety precautions:
🔶 Be alert and slow down when you see trick-or-treaters
🔶Avoid any distractions and put down the phone
🔶 Always keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel
🔶Yield to crossing pedestrians, especially when turning.
Parents are encouraged to remind their trick-or-treaters to:
🔶 Be seen -- wear costumes with bright fabrics or reflective tape and carry a flashlight with fresh batteries
🔶Be alert and cautious of their surroundings, especially on roadways 🔶Always walk -- do not run from house to house
🔶Walk on the sidewalks whenever possible, don't jaywalk and always cross at pedestrian crossovers or marked intersections
🔶 If a sidewalk is unavailable, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.
🔶Review safety precautions before heading out to trick-or-treat, including pedestrian and traffic safety rules

QUICK FACTS
👧👦 Motor vehicle collisions are the main cause of death for Canadian children.
🚘Distracted driving is a leading cause of collisions on Ontario roads. According to 2013 collision statistics, one person is injured in a distracted driving collision every 30 minutes. Drivers caught talking, texting, typing, dialing or e-mailing using a hand-held cellphone and other hand-held communication and entertainment device face a fine of up to $1,000 and receive three demerit points upon conviction.

Last week we received an email highlighting Ontario Library Week events. There were many mentions of special happenings in Kawartha Lakes Library branches located in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon Including a Food for Fines partnership happening at Bobcaygeon Public Library.

Frankly, it was a rather disappointing email, so a reply was sent to Kawartha Lakes Library saying that for our rural branches it seemed as though it was business as usual and asking if the Food for Fines would at least be extended to our rural branches.

It is good to see now, that there are a few items that will include our rural libraries, especially the Food for Fines, which allows people with library fines to exchange food bank donations for their fines.

Omemee was a bustling town with hotels, a furniture store, bakery, feed mill, and many other businesses.

Many Omemee residents have family members buried in Riverside Cemetery in Lindsay. City of Kawartha Lakes are asking the public for any clues that may help arrest the person or people who vandalised the cemetery. Police think it may be someone familiar with the workings of cemeteries. If you have clues, you may be able to get a little cash for your help by calling Crime Stoppers.

Here is the news release:

Police Seek Leads to Cemetery Mischief

City of Kawartha Lakes
Police are seeking the public’s assistance in their search for a suspect(s) responsible for mischief to a number of private burial sites at Riverside Cemetery.
On Thursday September 15th, 2016 Kawartha Lakes were called to the cemetery located on Lindsay St. South in Lindsay after it was discovered that a number of private burial niches had been disturbed.
The suspect(s) located the niches in the south end of the cemetery and had removed the granite slabs. They then proceeded to access and disturb the contents that were contained in the niches.
Cemetery staff are in the process of contacting the families of those niches that have been disturbed.
Police believe that the suspect(s) have some knowledge of the cemetery business as the vaults are secured in a very unique way.
If you have any information regarding the mischief, please contact Detective Sergeant Terry Cox at 705.324.6307 ext. 515 or at tcox@klps.ca . If you wish to remain anonymous you can contact Crimestoppers at 1.888.222.TIPS(8477) or at www.khcs.ca .

Where lifesaving electronic equipment is concerned, saving a few dollars by purchasing knock off equipment is no saving.
So what is wrong with the carbon monoxide equipment being sold on Kijiji?

Here is what was missing from the carbon monoxide detectors on Kijiji.

Beware These Carbon Monoxide Detectors May Not Detect Squat!

Did you know not all carbon monoxide detectors are created equal?

Apparently, some carbon monoxide detectors being sold on Kijiji are missing two very important pieces of ID to show that they are approved.

Did you know that if you buy a carbon monoxide detector without these certifications they will not pass the fire safety inspection?

Yup!

Whatever money you plunk down for a carbon monoxide detector without these certifications may just as well have been spent on play doh, so your child could create one for you.

Here is the picture from Twitter of the Carbon monoxide detectors that are lacking the certifications.

Keep Omemee Area Students Safe ! Ontario Back To School Advisory!

2016-09-05T19:50:00.000-04:00

Omemee Area Students Need Non-Distracted Drivers!

Omemee area students will soon be on the roads traveling to and from school on buses and by foot. Getting an education shouldn't involve taking your life in your hands.
However, this may be exactly what our youngsters are doing when they head out to school.

Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation stated in a press release today:

Road safety is a top priority for our government. With the new school year, I encourage everyone to be alert and slow down when driving in school zones and near school buses. Distracted driving collisions are on the rise – stay alert and help us keep our kids safe!"

How much has distracted driving increased?
You might be surprised!

Distracted Driving Collisions Endangering Our Children!

Do you know how much distracted driving has increased?
Distracted driving is a leading cause of collisions on Ontario roads. According to 2013 collision statistics, the number of distracted driving fatalities has more than doubled since the year 2000 and one person is injured in a distracted driving collision every 30 minutes.
One person every 30 minutes!
That is incredible!
Will your child make it safely to and from school?

How Can We Protect Students From Distracted Drivers?

Two measures the Ontario government points to in curbing distracted driver collisions are the fines and demerits for using hand held devices or failing to stop for school buses.
Drivers now caught talking, texting, typing, dialing or e-mailing using a hand-held cellphone and other hand-held communication and entertainment device face a fine of up to $1,000 and receive three demerit points upon conviction.

Last year, Ontario passed its Making Ontario’s Roads Safer legislation, clarifying that a school bus is the only bus that may be painted chrome yellow to be easily identified. Drivers failing to stop for a school bus can be fined up to $2,000 and receive six demerit points for a first conviction.
While Leslie Cross, President, Ontario School Bus Association appreciates measures the Ontario government has taken,

"The Ontario School Bus Association continues to work with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to ensure the safety of all students riding school buses. We are very pleased with the ministry’s efforts to keep the road safe for all users and the success Ontario has had in communicating safety messages, including distracted driving. We encourage all motorists to review safety measures before the school year begins and join us as safety partners in getting all children to school safely, on time and ready to learn."

However, will painting only school buses yellow help someone see the bus if they are looking at their phone?
What do you think can be done to make students' journeys to and from school safer?
Here is the press release from the government of Ontario :

Keep Ontario Roads Safe for Kids This School Year

September 5, 2016

Province Reminding Drivers to Be Alert near School Buses and in School Zones

As another school year begins, Ontario is reminding drivers to be alert, put down the phone and follow the rules when driving near school buses and in school zones. Almost 834,000 students travel on school buses every day across Ontario. To help keep them safe, drivers should:

Drive with caution when approaching or passing a school bus
Obey the speed limit and be prepared to stop for a school bus at any time, not just during school hours
Never pass a stopped school bus with red upper lights flashing - it's against the law Leave space around school buses so children can get on and off safely
Stop and yield the whole roadway at pedestrian crossovers, school crossings and other locations where there is a crossing guard. Parents should also remind their children to be aware of their surroundings when getting on or off school buses.

What do you think should be done to keep students safe ?
