David Wesley Jones-why is this man born in Omemee , in a history book about Manitoba? Manitoba Society? Occasionally you run across some surprising history about your community online. I was intrigued by this excerpt from The Story of Manitoba,and thought you might enjoy it as well.

DAVID WESLEY JONES

The material, educational, political and moral upbuilding of any community is due in a large measure to men of the stamp of David Wesley Jones men who accomplish definite and useful things and whose connection with business and public life promotes progress and advancement. Jfc Jones has aided his country in its wars and helped in its business and agricultural development, promoted activity along political lines and furthered the spread of the religious doctrines in which he believes. A spirit of energy and determination has characterized his career and his ambition has led him into connection with various enterprises, all of which have proved substantial stepping - stones to the gratifying degree of success which he today enjoys. A native of Ontario, he was born in Omemee. May 14, 1863, a son of James Robert and Jane (Kennedy) Jones, the former a native of County Fermanagh, Ireland, and the latter of Ontario. It was the father of our subject who founded the family in Canada. He came to Ontario when he was a young man and settled near Omemee, where he engaged in farming. In 1882 he came with his family to Manitoba and homesteaded land in the Roland district, where he was successful as a general agriculturist for many years. From time to time he added to his holdings and acquired one thousand acres of land which, because of Mr. Jones' excellent judgment in land values, proved to be the best and most productive soil in the province. The father of our subject retired a short time ago and has since spent his time traveling in various parts of the Dominion, especially in the region between Ontario and the coast. He has reached the age of eighty-five, but is in splendid physical and mental condition, active and hearty in spirit and interests and is most widely respected.

Mr. Jones is the oldest in a family of seven sons and one daughter. His school days were spent in Ontario and he accompanied his parents on their removal to Manitoba, remaining with them until 1885. He spent some time
after this in the army and later engaged in construction work on the Great Northern Railroad, in which line of activity he continued until 1888, when he determined to take up farming. He bought land six miles west of Roland and developed it until 1896, when he accepted the position of manager of the local branch of the Massey-Harris Implement Company. However, this connection is only one of Mr. Jones' varied activities. For seven years past he has been a member of the Dufferin municipal council and for fifteen years has been on the Roland school board, during which time the fine high-school building now in use was erected. He is well known in church work, adhering to the Doctrines of the Methodist religion and making his faith practical by good works. He is on the building committee, which promoted the erection of a new thirty-five thousand dollar house of worship. For a number of years he was police magistrate, and fraternally he belongs to the Masonic order and the Canadian Order of Foresters.

In February, 1890, Mr. Jones was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Lowe, who was born in Pakenham, Ontario, a daughter of Samuel Lowe, who settled in the Roland district in 1876 and was among its pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have three children : Stanley, who was for four years in the Bank of Hamilton and who is now in the employ of the Saskatchewan Cooperative Elevator Company of Winnipeg; and Leslie and Melville, who attend school.

Mr. Jones has also a creditable military record. In 1885 he enlisted in the Ninety-fifth Battalion, under Colonel Thomas Scott, and went to the front, being engaged in garrison duty at Fort Qu'Appele. The soldiers here, on one occasion, were surrounded by a band of three hundred Indians, including Chief Star Blanket and a number of other well known leaders. Mr. Jones served through the entire Northwest Rebellion and was honourably discharged at the close of hostilities. In the following year, 1886, he again enlisted and as an attached man took out his certificate as a commissioned officer. He is a member of the Army and Navy Veteran's club of Winnipeg.

About Ontario Family Fishing Week

Ontario Family Fishing (OFFW) events make it easy to try fishing in Ontario waters for the first time, or the first time in a long time. Twice a year, the government of Ontario designates several days during which Canadian residents can fish license-free in any water body where fishing is allowed. This year, July 2-10, 2011 is designated as the summer OFFW license-free fishing days. During all other periods, most Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase an OUTDOORS card and a fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. You can find out more about OFFW events on their website.

Youngtown Museum Celebrates 2,000th Visitor

Youngtown Museum recently celebrated its 2,000th visitor- that’s nearly twice the population of Omemee!

Now into its fourth season, Youngtown operates essentially as a not for profit run by volunteers. Enjoyed by all, the museum has managed to break even on costs thus far, but the future beyond this year will most certainly require funds to allow for further growth and building maintenance. If you dig this project please consider making a donation when you visit as they are self-supporting.
Music fans will want to be sure to check out the Youngtown Museum website as well for great articles about musicians, and the music industry.

1904 Banking Display: History Buffs Delight!

Laurie Wookey’s love for history is clearly evident in the marvellous 1904 Period Banking Display at the corner of Colborne, and King Street, at 47 King Street East, Omemee. Laurie Wookey has been hard at work restoring the building at 47 King Street East, which housed Omemee’s first bank, and is to be applauded for the transformation.

Finding information on such a specialized topic, as the history of banking requires much patience, and perseverance. This is indeed a display not to be missed!

Washers a game similar to Horseshoes is great fun!!
The game of washers has 20 or more variations, and can be played with washers as large as your hand, with variations in the number of washers used and the distance they are tossed.
How to Win at Washers Here are the finer points of the game as it is
sometimes played in Omemee:
The object of the game is to be the first team to score 26 points by tossing Toonie-sized washers, into a four inch high cup set 16 feet away. Each washer you get in the cup scores 4 points. However, just like in Horseshoes, close counts -get your washer inside the square foot box, in which the cup is set, for one point. You get 5 tosses, then your partner tosses the five washers back to the target at your end. The first team to score 26 points wins. Pretty simple!

Omemee Fireworks Show is a ‘Go’ tonight! Scheduling outdoor entertainment depends a great deal on Mother Nature’s cooperation,and she is smiling on the Omemee Fireworks Celebrations tonight. About Ontario Family Fishing Week

Ontario Family Fishing (OFFW) events make it easy to try fishing in Ontario waters for the first time, or the first time in a long time. Twice a year, the government of Ontario designates several days during which Canadian residents can fish license-free in any water body where fishing is allowed. This year, July 2-10, 2011 is designated as the summer OFFW license-free fishing days. During all other periods, most Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase an OUTDOORS card and a fishing license to legally fish in Ontario. Omemee Lioness Pioneer Days Annual Pancake Breakfast is eagerly looked forward to by residents, and visitors from miles around. Not only do you get a hearty delicious feed of pancakes and sausages,fruit,and beverage, it’s a chance to rub elbows with all the locals! Some say the Annual Pancake Breakfast is truly Omemee’s Homecoming event! You never know which celebrity you may find seated next to you at one of the long tables filling Coronation Hall, or checking out the intriguing Omemee Historical Society displays on the stage at 1 King Street
West. The main floor at Coronation Hall is wheelchair chair accessible via a handy ramp at the front of the building. PIONEER DAYS FISHING CONTEST

JULY 2 nd, 2011

BIGGEST BASS WINS

AGE LIMIT :	16 years and under.
FISHING AREA :	Brown’s Bridge on upper Pigeon River to Cowan’s Bay bridge on lower Pigeon River.
BAIT :	Any bait legal under Ontario Fishing Regulations.
TIME LIMIT :	Weigh-in time 10:00 AM – 12:00 NOON, Sat., July 2
WEIGH IN PLACE:	In front of Omemee Hardware Store, 24 King St. E.

PRIZES :

1^st Prize - $25.00

2^nd Prize - $15.00

3^rd Prize - $10.00

Details:

1. Commence fishing anytime on July 2^nd.

2. Fish MUST be alive when brought in to be weighed.

3. In case of a tie in length, total weight of a fish will decide the winner.

4. Only one (1) fish per person may be entered.

5. In case of a discrepancy, the decision of the weigh-in official is final.

6. FINAL WEIGH IN IS 12:00 noon.
