The Equatics’ “Doin It!!!” is a funk/soul masterpiece, originally recorded in 1972 by a bunch of high school kids. Black Math “Phantom Power” LP and “S/T” LP Reissue

The folks behind Chicago’s Permanent Records are totally amazing tastemakers, if you ever get the chance, visit their store, it rules. They have a brand new record from lo-fi pop maniacs Black Math up for sale, plus a super limited reissue of their first album. WFMU described them as “Dark-wave buried in tape hiss, with grinding synth, electric cello, and drum machine”, which pretty much sums it up. The new LP, “Phantom Power”, is $14.99 and limited to 500 copies, the reissue of the self-titled album is $14.99 and limited to only 100 copies, and there is also a tape version of the debut for $4.99. Neither artist represented here is a stranger to cassette releases, in fact Diving Into the Pineapple Portal is a reissue of a long since OOP tape from Brother Raven. A vinyl pressing of the newest album from Ludicra has been so conspicuously missing that it has literally been causing me physical pain. The CD version came out on Profound Lore, a label that releases only the finest and heaviest metal around, but doesn’t release vinyl. Thankfully, Throne Records is giving this behemoth of a black metal album the analog pressing it so rightfully deserves. Super expensive to ship to North America, I’ll hold out for a distro for now; but others might want to consider getting their pre-order in, particularly if you want the limited blue vinyl version – thronerecords.net.

Two New 7″s from Gold Robot Records

Just got two new singles in the mail from Gold Robot Records, I love with this little label is doing. The first is a split from Colossal Yes and The Good Fear, two bands from two different sides of the country. The music is pretty different too, the Colossal Yes side is a recorded-with-one-mic piece of melancholy blues, while The Good Fear bring a really heartfelt, driving rock song on the b-side (the clip below). The second new single is from Roman Ruins, the solo project of Beach House drummer Graham Hill. What I found here was totally not what I was expecting, two slices of blissed-out synth pop, quite different from the other GRR releases I have run into. Beautiful songs, plus the vinyl sounds great. It comes on orange vinyl, has an edition of 500, and is $5. Again, Gold-Robot.com.

Black Mountain “Wilderness Heart” LP

I’ve been really, really excited about the new Black Mountain album, their first two records are in constant rotation on my turntable. ”Wilderness Heart” is a little bit more straightforward rock than their last one, but I still think it’s great. For some reason, “In The Future” always sounded pretty dark and occult to me, this one sounds much less like that for me, even ditching a bit of the heavy psychedelia. That said, it’s completely solid and will likely sneak into my top albums at the end of the year. You can preorder the LP for only $12.50 at Jagjaguwar.
