All of this started playing out 25 years ago today – thought I’d bump it back to the top of this blog to rekindle the memories… Escape from LA by Roger Darnell Wednesday, May 30, 2001: The Countdown Begins As I sat at my desk at the end of the business day (night) on Tuesday, I knew I really needed to get some sleep to be ready to start loading the truck bright and early the next morning; surveying my office, though — still largely intact — it finally also sunk-in to me that I needed to get it packed, once and for all. Fast forward to 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning: I’d worked all the way through the night, the office was 98% done, the house was a scattered array of semi-packed boxes, furniture and closed boxes, all ready for the truck, and we were off to pick up the truck from Budget in Van Nuys on Sepulveda Blvd., the same place where we’d returned our truck from the 1998 move West. This truck was a little bigger — a sign that the move was a success? — and the car carrier, destined to transport our Honda Accord back across the country, may have been the same one we picked up from New Orleans on the previous trip. Beth had slept very little as well, so the recollection of truck-packing day is a little blurry. We were smart enough to request a couple of movers to come to our house at 9 to load the truck, and by 11, they were done. By 5 p.m., much of the “little stuff” was handled, I’d napped for a couple of hours, and we were starting to visualize the arrival of my “volunteer truck-driver” father at the Burbank airport the next morning at 10:30 and our subsequent departure, which we’d been planning for over six months…. A little side-note here for those of you who haven’t heard from us in a while. There’s a much longer, more detailed and drawn-out story here that will await you upon your first visit to our new home in the mountains of Boone, North Carolina… but essentially, we decided to buy a home Beth’s mom and step-father were planning to build in Boone (anticipating getting pregnant in the not-too-distant future), then we got pregnant (not to worry — the above-mentioned ‘drawn-out story’ focuses very little on this part), and now we’re moving to Boone to stay in another of Ginny and Bill’s Boone “castles” beside Rocky Creek until our new home is ready. To answer the obvious question, we had a fantastic time in Los Angeles and accomplished so much more than we could have hoped for… but this opportunity to own a wonderful home in an amazingly beautiful place — and, more importantly, to have our little one growing up with cousins (including our God-children Grace and Claire), aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. — was too fanastic to miss. What at first seemed like a glimmer of a neat idea became our goal and now, it would appear, our ‘next adventure,’ and we are suitably thrilled. With that said, though, we leave behind many very dear true friends that made our California Dream something we’ll always treasure… and the only way we can cope with the sadness of saying goodbye to them is to hope and trust we’ll all find ourselves together again as part of our new adventures. After our last dinner in LA (Tony Roma’s — nothing special ), we were happy to receive the call from my dad that he’d caught the flight out a day early, and he was just a couple of hours from Burbank. Beth did some final clean-up on the house as I grabbed Dad from the airport. Though it was a little late his time, I decided to tour him through Coldwater Canyon up to Mulholland so he could see the view of the valley; unfortunately, the only thing to be viewed there on this evening was the inside of a fog cloud. We found our way back down Woodcliff, through Sherman Oaks and to our now virtually spotless little house, which the landlord had already been showing and offering at a rate ($2800 p/mo!) that was almost twice as much as we’d been renting it for over the past two years. As much as he seemed impressed with the place, the price-tag really got dad’s head shaking in disbelief. Finally, Dad slipped to his room and his awaiting air mattress, and we found our way to our own air mattress in our room for our last night’s sleep. So many great things had happened for us in the past three and a half years, and we’d enjoyed so many great visits with our friends over the previous weeks, we were reeling with emotions and something of a numb, over-tired, excited anticipation. And what of the cats? It’d been an exciting, un-nerving couple of days for them, too, what with all the boxes and handtrucks, etc. Callie had spent the day in the closet buried under a couple of towels, seemingly certain that the end of the world was at hand. Maggie’s eyes couldn’t have been any more wide open, and even as we fell asleep, she continued her survey of the empty house… as well as her noisy, troubled, in-our-faces reports of her findings throughout the night. As we awoke at around 5:15 and considered slipping out from the warm covers into the chilly morning, Beth found a way to trick Maggie into being quiet for just a little while longer… but that’s tomorrow’s story. More to come soon. Our best to all of you! Love — Roger, Beth, cats, Amelia-to-be Escape from LA by Roger Darnell . Countdown: Wednesday, May 30, 2001 – The Countdown Begins .
In the late summer of 1989, I had an idea to approach the University of Central Florida’s student newspaper, “The Future,” about writing a weekly column. I wrote the first one and very humbly submitted it in person to the editor, Scott Altman. Without much fanfare, it was accepted, and so it went for the next fifteen months. Ultimately, many positive experiences grew from these efforts. One esteemed instructor made much of my work and was instrumental in me winning a Scripps-Howard Foundation Fellowship for the column. Thank you, Keith Fowles. The kind feedback of several friends (including Beth Kiefert, now Beth Darnell) and a few other tips of folks’ hats made the endeavor most worthwhile. The complete time capsule, featuring the thoughtful, humorous, satirical and/or fictional work of a somewhat atypical Central Florida college student at the turn of the 1990s, appears here. I thought I’d use this space to share the following entry that debuted 36 years ago. Feb. 13, 1990: The Story of Tiny and Valera In a small midwestern town, a boy named Tiny grew up tending his widower father’s peach orchard. Despite his name, Tiny was an over-sized boy. No one worked harder than he, and no father was ever more proud. On Tiny’s twenty-third birthday, a late winter freeze came to the Midwest, and Tiny’s old dad passed with the same cold wind that bore away the fruits of the orchard. Tiny took to the road. For years he wandered, ever eastward, toward the ocean shores. In the chills of a foggy winter morning, Tiny happened on a road-side stand near the sea, wherein stood a wisp of a girl named Valera selling fruit to the passing fishermen. This morning, as the large unkempt Tiny ambled past her, she shrilled out, “Good mornin’ sir. Say, a peach’ll put the sweetness in your soul this mornin’.” Tiny turned toward the first friendly voice, it seemed, he’d ever heard. On seeing the peach in her outstretched hand, he broke down in tears. The lovely girl was soon at his side. In his bewildered state, Tiny was helpless. He opened up, and as the morning passed the two exchanged stories and became open-hearted friends. Valera explained the loneliness of her life, and Tiny felt a stirring in his giant heart. He took to sleeping outside the village and spending his days with Valera. He was in love. One morning, a friend of Valera’s father returned from the sea. As Tiny rounded the bluff, he saw the man holding Valera and kissing her sweet cheeks. Tiny was destroyed. He tore through the woods down to the beach and threw himself into the crashing surf. Suddenly, Valera appeared. She sliced through the water and dove town to catch Tiny’s sinking mass. She pulled him to shore and brought him around. “You silly man, you could’ve drowned!” she cried. “Y’ want me to be a lonely wretch forever?” Real tears streamed down her wet face. Panting, Tiny humbly told her of his feelings. “Oh — I love you too, Tiny!” she rejoiced. Witnessing the exchanging of vows that morning, the fishermen went home with glad hearts. The couple’s story spread, and the village adopted a holiday in celebration of their sincere love. Ever since, on February 14, the townspeople have greeted one another with, “Happy Val and Tiny’s Day!”

Almost exactly seven years ago, I stopped to shoot this footage along Highway 105 just south of Boone. Reviewing it and re-reading my journal entries from that time, I’m surprised to see all the directions our lives were travelling. Now, a year after the North Carolina High Country was devastated by Hurricane Helene, this stretch of the Watauga River once again looks a lot like it did back in 2018 … and for a very long time before that. My travels on that 2018 October day began in Asheville, where we had moved mid-2015 from Boone, when Amelia and Claire were rising freshmen, and Riley was set to begin middle school. By 2018, Amelia and Claire were finishing up their secondary educations like bosses, and setting their sites on college; Riley and his Asheville pals were starting to make their mark on the realm’s vibrant music scene, and he was also still spending time with his lifelong friends in Boone; Beth was going from her day job with Sally Spiegel to the acclaimed North Asheville hot-spot Avenue M most days of the week; and I was serving my agency’s illustrious clientele, while also making headway on some major writing projects. For the record, Beth and I have been back in Boone since mid-2024. True to the proverb about the effects of absence on the heart, being away from this area definitely made us appreciate it, and its wonderful people, even more. Since our return, our now-grown kids have joined us here on many occasions. Clearly, it’s extra special to them, too. Wherever we wind up in the future, the Boonerang effect is sure to keep pulling us back to a town and a community that continue providing us with precious memories … all of which opened up to us thanks to Virginia and Bill Martin – Beth’s mom and step-father – whose legacies live on in this wonderful place. Please stop back soon for more Rare Air.

On Saturday, July 6, 2019, I sat down with my laptop and began writing a journal entry, as I’ve been doing consistently, at least once a week, since mid-2003. With only two more full days remaining at the vacation spot of our dreams, I was ready to ask myself big questions, and to renew my search for answers. One essential takeaway: I felt extremely lucky for all the blessings in my life, all of which build upon my relationship with Beth. My efforts to assess my early career aspirations alongside actual achievements-to-date made me especially aware of the vital importance of maintaining my focus as a communications consultant through the Darnell Works Agency, which was entering its 19th successful year in business. While still being enamored with my youthful dreams of becoming novelist and filmmaker, I saw how I could still eventually pursue them through mindful perseverance in the days to come. Looking back now, that sober vision of the foundation of my life – alongside more aspirational ideas that continue to inspire me – created an important milestone. We’ve had some more awesome vacations since then, and I’ve learned to take advantage of that idle, happy mindset, to take stock of the present, and lay plans for the future. This ends my recount of our 2019 St. John trip. Thank you very much for your interest, as always. Please return soon for more Rare Air.
I’ve been featuring video shot during our 2019 trip to St. John since episode 47. Revisiting what I wrote to accompany that edition – and almost every one since – pining away for past times is clearly my recurring theme. Honoring the present does remain vastly important for me, always, and yet, this digital pathway is sure to involve even more savoring of sweet, bygone times. Once more I returned to the journal entries from this vacation week, which ran 1-8 July. The trip was the first of our two stays in the Limetree Cove Beach Cottage; immediately, we knew this place was extra special. Back in 2019, one ultra-unique aspect was its close proximity to the Lime Out floating taco bar. Through fate, we found ourselves staying “just around the bend” from what was incredibly cool for us at the time, and which remains one of St. John’s most awesome attractions. Find it online at https://limeoutvi.com, and read on to hear how we first found it almost six years ago. July 2, 2019 We are now firmly ensconced at The Beach Cottage, here in Limetree Cove. We arrived last night at about 9 pm, and Olivier was kind enough to meet us in Coral Bay, then lead the way here through donkeys, deer, at least one giant crab, and very little traffic. As much as we were in love with Over the Rainbow, this place has it beat. That ranking has to do with its location on the water, but also, all the other amenities, except for the pool. We both feel so lucky to be here. Not too far away (within “swimming distance,” we proved earlier) there is a floating taco bar. However, it was rush hour when we swam up using our floaties, and the kayaks were already lined up two-deep. We opted out, but I’ll be surprised if we don’t try again another day. July 4, 2019 (written on July 8th) This was our day to line things up to experience Lime Out in Hansen Bay. We were the perfectly aligned team, getting out the door with all the right stuff right after 10. Arriving at Hansen Bay in about a minute, we met Thalia once again, and she got us parked in the shade, since we were among the very first arrivals. We also reserved the kayak needed to get out to the taco bar; it wound up being $30 for a two-person boat for two hours. We snorkeled for about 70 minutes, then came and claimed our kayak as the crowds were growing and jockeying for position to get to Lime Out. We arrived and, after tying up our boat, were the 5th and 6th people to swim onto a submerged barstool. It was quite an operation, and we took it all in, pounding beers and five tacos in total, including two shrimp, two tuna, and a ceviche. We spent $100 … and swam away very happy. We then spent 20 minutes attempting to locate the HMS Santa Monica wreck. Maybe someday we’ll actually find the remains of the late 1700s Spanish ship, which is supposedly a stone’s throw away from Lime Out’s current location. Thanks for your interest, as always.
Dipping back into this original series I first launched a decade ago, I am finding it is both a fascinating time capsule and a deeply meaningful map to the future. Looking back upon the years before I finally decided to publish the first Rare Air episode, Beth and I were very much caught up in living life and raising kids. Married in 1992, we had thoughtfully postponed that phase. Throughout our history together, the creative dreams I carried along – largely described by the terms author and filmmaker – were a recurring subject. A lot of “after hours” diligence had been applied over the years, and in 2011, I surprised myself by completing two big personal writing projects. Those were featured in my 2023 poetic memoir, “Arc of the Poet.” The years between having kids (Amelia was born in 2001) and Arc of the Poet’s publication were mostly about work for us all, with a majority of the highlights coming from our vacation getaways. Building this series to showcase and guide the vacation highlights is another multifaceted creative gift. A main takeaway is realizing the awesomeness of those trips … and their importance to us in life’s big picture. The timeline being covered at this moment through new Rare Air episodes traces back to July of 2019. On through episode 60, the series will be featuring video shot – and words dedicated to – that phenomenal week-long trip, now five and a half years past. Back then – and many times before and since – I obsessed over next-level dreams. As time marches on, the chase continues. Thanks for your interest, as always. Please return soon for more Rare Air.
Before I publish the 57th episode in this series, Beth and I are once again set to experience Saint John in person. It is very safe to say we are eagerly anticipating our visit to a new (to us) East End accommodation, during August’s second week. As you can see at the bottom of this post, I’ve been using footage gathered during our 2019 trip to create all the Rare Air episodes published over the past two years. My journal entry from July 8 of that year was typed out quickly, at the point where I knew I needed to pack up and go. Here’s what I wrote. I am so lucky that this adventure, and virtually all others since 1989, have involved Beth. We drew ourselves together even more closely on this trip, and set our team goals for the immediate future, and down the road a bit. We idly tossed out the idea of being back here in five years… I doubt we’ll stay away that long. 2020 may feature a trip to Europe. If so, 2021 will probably find us back here. So, we hoped to return in 5 years, and that plan is right on track. While COVID nixed European travel for us, my partner and I snuck in two returns to St. John (August 2020 and June 2022) – and we had an incredible trip to St. Croix with the kids in June/July of 2021. Among other things, that means I have a lot more footage to share in this series. Here’s wishing you all a wonderful summer to come. I hope you’ll return soon for more Rare Air.
