A Healthy Message from Fashion Designers

It’s Fashion Week in New York, and everyone is abuzz with spring 2010 trends. One trend happens to be seasonless- and that's good nutrition. This week the Council of Fashion Designers of America is distributing a nutrition pamphlet called ‘Model Foods For The Model Life' as part of the CFDA Health Initiative.

We’re quite partial to the cover: a trio of Audrey look-alikes munching on a enormous sandwich. You probably won’t see that backstage at the Fashion Week tents! Though we do hope that there will be plenty of people following the CFDA’s nutrition advice (models and designers alike!) on sustained energy, sound breakfast choices and eating for beautiful hair and skin.

The pamphlet coincides with the release of CFDA’s American Fashion Cookbook, which includes recipes from 100 of the boldface names in American fashion. If you’ve ever wanted to try Isaac Mizrahi’s Mushroom Truffle Spaghetti, Donna Karan’s Green Juice or Tory Burch’s Andalusian Gazpacho, this is the cookbook you’ve been waiting for.

Jill Stuart was born in Manhattan on January 5, 1965 and attended the Dalton School. Her mother, Lynn Stuart, was a well known fashion designer in the 1960’s and 70’s, who dressed many celebrities including Natalie Wood and Lucille Ball.
In 1993, while the young contemporary New York fashion designers were setting forth grunge-inspired ensembles, Jill Stuart created a new sportswear label which was subsequently featured in Clueless. The glamorous pieces which have been described as "cool pretty girl" clothing by industry publications including Women’s Wear Daily, W magazine and Teen Vogue.
The Jill Stuart label is also well known[who?] for innovative ad campaigns with top fashion photographers on all fashion designer clothes.

A dress code is a set of rules governing what garments may be worn together. Examples of dress codes are combinations such as "smart casual", or "morning dress". A classification of these codes is normally made for varying levels of formality and times of day. In traditional Western dressing, for men the more formal dress codes, such as "black tie", are highly codified with essentially fixed definitions, mostly unchanged for more than fifty years, while the more casual classifications change very quickly, and a world-wide or widely relevant discussion is impossible. For women, changes in fashion and style are more rapid.

In practical use, dress codes are either followed instinctively, enforced by peer pressure, so that people wear similar clothing in the same situations. Alternatively, at more formal events where a dress code is specified, invitees wear clothes at the specified level; if some variation is permitted (for example, "black tie preferred"), the host will wear the most formal option to save guests the embarrassment of out-dressing him. Appropriate national dress is generally permitted, and national variations are also widely worn as an exception to the trend of uniformity with peers, often in the form of headgear.

4 Dress Codes in almost all occassions:

1. Black Tie
Men should dress in a smart suit or tuxedo, with an ironed, tucked in shirt and tie. Women get a bit more freedom, having the choice between long or cocktail dresses, in a wide range of colors.

It’s a good idea to stick with the classics, black and white, and accessorize with bright red jewelry. This dress code does allow you to make a statement, but if you’re too crazy you might be denied entry.

Other Versions: White Tie, Formal Black Tie, Creative Black Tie (usually involves a theme)

2. Informal
For men, this means black trousers, and a shirt. However, you don’t need to look as smart as above, and you don’t need to wear a tie or jacket if you don’t want too.

Women can wear short dresses, but check that it is an appropriate length, and killer heels. Again, aim for classic colors like red and green and add statement jewelry and big cocktail rings for a show stopping look.

Other Versions: Cocktail Attire, Semi Formal or Black Tie Optional

3. Dressy Casual
Trousers are fine for either sex, but no jeans. It’s advisable for men to stick to shirts or waistcoats, which still look smart and respectable.

Women should avoid low cut tops and t shirts, and instead go for shirts, blouses, waistcoats, anything that looks smart without flashing too much flesh. Accessorize with long necklaces and sexy make up.

Other Versions: Smart Casual, Business Casual or Festive Casual (usually with a theme)

4. Casual
Anything goes! However, it’s always best to make a bit of an effort. If you must wear jeans, get a well fitting pair, and team them with heels. Tailored trousers are always in style too.

For men, try to avoid comedy T-shirts, you never know who is watching! Bear in mind where the event is being held, and make sure you won’t be uncomfortable. Remember, Fashion and Style First before you go socializing.

Great theater dress, the tutu of prima ballerina - turn into a great womens designer clothes.

Ballet was introduced a hundreds of years ago. A type of performative dance originated on French courts and was further developed as a concert form of dance in England, Italy, Russia.
The early ballet weren't highly skilled as they are now, it has become a highly technical form of dance with it's own vocabulary.

When ballet first originated in Italy during the Renaissance (known then as "ballo,") female dancers were not allowed to show their legs or even ankles to the public. Instead, dancers used masks so that their artistic expression was enough to excite the audience. Their clothing included stiffly laced long-sleeved bodices and panniered skirts. Such restrictive, cumbersome outfits allowed little possibility for elaborate athletic body movement. Thus dance steps had to be quite simple.

Then came the "tutu" a corruption of the word cucu, (French baby talk for cul-cul meaning roughly "botty-wotty" for butt). Legend has it that the term was first used by commoners who, unlike the wealthy sitting in the upper levels of the ballet theaters, were seated in the lower levels. These commoners would look up at the dancer and had a very different view of the ballerinas.

Mens Tips on Grooming and Looking Good

Grooming habits and what is considered "good grooming" have varied greatly over time. Around 10,000 B.C., scented oils were a popular method of cleaning and softening skin and masking body odor. In ancient Egypt, kohl and red ochre featured prominently in the grooming arsenal of most men, as did a variety of skin care creams. Additionally, tribes around the world frequently used makeup in the form of dyes and paints for medicinal and cosmetic purposes as well as to psychologically prepare for battle.

So here are some great tips on grooming and looking good.

Before you leave the house:

Take a shower every morning

There's just no excuse for missing a shower when you wake up, before you go out for the night or after a workout. Water, soap, towel. Simple.

Check your face

You don't necessarily have to shave, but at least ensure that your face is clean and free of "debris." A quick look in the mirror to check for nose hair, stuff in your beard or crust in your eyes doesn't take more than a few seconds, and is well worth the effort.

Groom your hair (ear, nose, chest, head, etc.)

Hair growth happens with regularity, so make trimming and upkeep part of your routine. Wash and condition your hair every day (or every other day, depending on your hair type and length). Set aside one day a week (preferably a Saturday or Sunday, when you have more time) to tend to ear, nose and chest hair.

Clean your hands

In the business world, handshakes can make or break you; in the dating world, a woman expects to see nice hands. So all you have to do is cut your nails regularly, scrape away the dirt with a "nail cleaner" or a nailbrush (which you can keep in the shower to save time), wash your hands frequently (to avoid sweaty, sticky hands), and use lotion on occasion (to keep them smooth).

Apply lip balm

There is nothing worse than looking at chapped lips, and trust me, no girl will want to kiss them. Find a good lip balm and use it regularly. Just don't put too much on, or it will end up looking like lip gloss. And if you don't like applying it in public because of the unmanly look it portrays, then do it in private when you go to the bathroom.

Dress well

You don't need a suit (unless the occasion calls for it), but you should always wear clean clothes that are wrinkle-free and smell good. In other words, wear clothes that were just in your drawer or closet, not your hamper.

On a related note, select clothes that fit. After you put on your clothes, take a look in the mirror for a few seconds to make sure they fit properly. Yes, their preferred fit will vary over time as styles change (along with your body and taste), but the key here is to pay attention to what you're putting on.

Use some sort of scent

Many guys go to town wearing some sort of fragrance, using everything from scented soap and deodorant to aftershave and cologne. Other guys prefer not to use anything. Like most things in life, the answer is moderation. Pick one scent (otherwise you'll combine fragrances, which will result in a weird smell) and go with it. Just make sure it isn't too strong and make sure not to bathe in it. A sample scent most love by men is Polo Sport from Ralph Laruen. One final note: Don't skimp on cost here; cheap cologne will act like repellant.

Shine your shoes

People tend to look at your shoes right away. If dress shoes are appropriate, make sure they're shined. If you're wearing casual shoes, make sure they look clean and new. Tattered shoes tell the world that you either don't have money or don't care -- neither option is attractive.

Once you're out:

Have proper posture

Good posture is important for you and your appearance. Focus on sitting and standing up straight. If you need a little extra help, do some posture exercises to strengthen your core muscles.

Scan your attire

Throughout a long day at the office, your clothes are likely to shift and get stained. After lunch and maybe again before you leave the office, check yourself in the mirror or look down to see if any adjustments are in order. As a side note, an untied tie is not a good look -- either keep it on or take it off.

Check your smell

Sweat happens, but it's also the enemy. Take a whiff of yourself every few hours and keep some fragrance (cologne, deodorant or body spray) on hand to freshen up. Also, if you sweat a lot, consider wearing an undershirt to prevent getting sweat stains on your shirts. To make sure you smell good from head to toe, apply talc powder on your feet to stay dry, especially if you're not wearing socks with your shoes.

Perform a quick facial check after you eat

Take a few minutes and use the bathroom mirror after you eat. Scan your teeth, nose and facial hair for any evidence of your meal or beverage. Ideally, you'd also brush your teeth, but if that isn't an option, then use a toothpick, mouthwash, gum, or mints.

You'll be judged by your cover:
If you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you give off those vibes that tell the world that you feel great. Make your impressions count by letting your appearance show off what you have going on inside. And make frequent use of those mirrors. You don't have to be a woman about it, but you should check them as often as you can.

Thigh-high boots are "in" this 2009

Pants might be over as we know it. Thigh-high boots emerged as the hot shoe for fall, landing so far up the leg they doubled as leg warmers. Is this designers' collective attempt to save the world from the pantless ladies everywhere (Lady Gaga and Lindsay Lohan)? Designers even tacked on a few bells and whistles to their boots: Hussein Chalayan added garter belts, Prada made rubber waders stylish, Antonio Berardi lined his in fur, and Stella McCartney's faux-leather leggings were actually boots that pulled up to the crotch.

Thigh-length boots, known also as thigh-high boots or simply thigh boots, are boots that extend above the knees. Other synonyms include over-the-knee boots, and especially when cuffed, pirate boots. Lengths vary from reaching just over the knee to reaching almost to the crotch (referred to as crotch boots).

But are we ready to embrace the implications of this phenomenon? Pants as we know them are losing popularity. And with the surge of thigh-highs, rescuing them is even further from our reach.

Only Karl Lagerfeld (in all his ooey-gooey goodness) could pull off an entirely white couture collection. And that's exactly what he did on the Chanel Spring '09 runway. Despite mixed reactions to the stark white motif, giant paper flowers, and white laser-cut details, Karl simply shrugged it off as "[starting] with a clean sheet of paper" (which in fashion is code for "I'm the only bitch on the block that could pull off a stunt like this). But, even in all it's washed-out minimalism, the devil was in the details. Every ruffled edge, lacy trim, and braided accent had me hearing wedding bells ringing in the distance. After all, what's more exquisitely detailed in all it's white glory than a towering wedding cake, complete with a floral topper.

1990's Fashion
The 90's fashion era was also referred to as “anti-fashion”, but in reality “anti-fashion” was only one of the many trends in fashion of the 90's.
The 90's was also characterized by minimalist styles, many over lapping and often contradictory trends.

The early 90's fashion significantly gave way to the rise of grunge fashion but in the latter part of it, many have moved away from grunge. Most of the population was still on the hang of the later years of fashion style(e.g. Styles from 60's and 70's).

Remnants from the 80's were still existing, like the famous shoulder pads which the ladies of the 80's truly adore, the mini-skirts(I have no comment on this one).

The 90's offer a lot of new and exciting trends, here are some of it:

A Look Back - 80's Fashion - Make Ups

Every decade has its own style, and the 80s really had its own. From miniskirts to parachute pants and everything in between, something really went awry with our fashion sense during that decade. Make up was no exception.

This is the look of the 80's.

Eyes and Cheeks
First and foremost there was just way too much of it. The girls of the decade literally “painted” their faces on. The two defining makeup elements in the 80s face were bold eyes and blush meant to accentuate the cheek bones. You can notice the heavy application of eye shadow and too much of blush, this makes you look better in the 80's. If your face didn’t look halfway clownish, you hadn't quite achieved the look yet.

Cyndi Lauper, has a lot of great elements to point out, relating to makeup as well as 80s fashion in general. Notice the very heavy use of bright pink blush in combination with the heavy eyeliner and orange eyeshadow. On the fashion side, she's got the top over the shoulder thing going, lots of bangles and even a black lace fingerless glove on her right hand. On the hair side, she has the big, teased and off to one side do down pat.

There were tons of eye shadow colors in heavy use throughout the 80s, but the color most associated with the decade is the god-awful electric blue stuff. What in the world were we thinking? The eyeliner, in particular, was worn in abundance and on the inside. Surely you remember gently pulling the bottom of your eye down to achieve the most complete coverage. Nothing says 80s valley vixen like tons of blue or teal eyeliner rimming the inside of your eyes. Bright blue eye shadow along with a bold secondary color, heavy eyeliner, colored mascara – let’s just say it was the complete opposite of the “natural” look that’s so popular today.

Talking about the eye makeup, let’s discuss an alternate use we found for eyeliner in the eighties. Before the 80s, having a mole wasn’t something to be proud of. Then we fell in love with Madonna and suddenly everyone wanted one. Ain't got them? Not a problem. Buy a stick-on or simply draw one on with brown eyeliner. Did it look good? Heck no! But come on, it was the 80s! Our totally bodacious babe shown above demonstrates both an excellent example of a blue and orange eye shadow palate along with the faux eyeliner-based facial mole.

In many generation now Fashion has been evolving so drastically every year. Bags, Shoes, Jackets, Skirts, Jeans, Make-up, Hairstyle all come to a new evolution yearly. All come and go like the 80's style which recently made a come back, straight hairs to curly and waves and back again. A cycle of never ending change.

Fashion and the 1980's
For some, the 80's were a great time. The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. For others, it was nothing but bad hair, worse clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent. We take the former approach and relish the excess and outrageous fashions that the 80's managed to make mainstream. We didn't accessorize - we "excessorized" and LOVED it.

"The Top 10 of 80's style"

Shoulder Pads
Shoulder pads may very well be the worst of the top 10 80's fashion fads. In fact, our online polls on this site indicate that you agree with that assessment, with an overwhelming majority of our site visitors rating shoulder pads as the worst of the fashions of the 1980's.

Mini Skirts
The shorter the better!... women and girls loved miniskirts. Denim was the most popular but were also made in a number of other materials including knit and leather. This particular look has made a big comeback recently. The only people who weren't wearing miniskirts in the 80s were men (ok, well some did) and elderly women. {More pictures of girls on mini-skirt}

Leg Warmers
Another of one of the top 10 80's fashion fads that didn't make a lot of sense was that of leg warmers. Maybe we all had really cold legs because of the miniskirts we wore or maybe we just thought they looked cute.

Huge Earrings
You know how cute Christmas ornaments look on a tree? During the 80's we thought the same would apply to our ears. Huge earrings from various costume jewelry collections were all the rage and if your earrings didn't touch your shoulder, they weren't big enough and your out of style.

Fingerless Gloves
Fingerless gloves were another odd 80's fashion fad, and it seems to be coming back into style. From romance enthusiasts to punk-rock fans, fingerless gloves were popular with quite a variety of 80's genres.

Parachute Pants
Oh yes... and then there were parachute pants. They started off skin tight and ended up baggier than a potato sack. Parachute pants may very well be the one piece of clothing that can sum up the ridiculousness of the top 10 80's fashion fads. Have you ever tried one?.

Members Only Jackets
Who didn't want a"Members Only jacket" in the 80's? If you didn't have one, you were instantly labeled a dork and you could forget about getting in with the "in" crowd. Members Only jackets were all the rage, and imitations were completely unacceptable.

UNITS
A one-size-fits-all clothing store featuring knit skirts, shirts, belts and leggings in coordinating colors. The clothes were sold in UNITS boutiques located in malls throughout the United States. You could buy six different pieces of UNITS clothing and create an entire wardrobe from them. It goes without saying that UNITS did not make it out of the 80's.

Stretch Pants
The stirrup pants version of this particular fad had to be the worst. These pants made NO ONE look good. They created a triangle-leg effect that made even the thinnest person look big. While many of these 1980's fashions are making their way back on the scene and into our stores, the stretch pants/stirrup pants trend needs to stay tucked safely back in the 80's.

Oversized Tops
Last, but not least, we have the 80's fashion fad of oversized tops. Big sweaters, sweatshirts and t-shirts were totally hot and wearing them over a miniskirt or a pair of leggings made them even hotter. These tops were most often belted with big and gaudy, low slung belts with the top bloused over the belt.
