On its own merits

Dark Shadows gif.

I'm such a fan of Dark Shadows and all their layers of "just wrong".

Quentin Collins figure

2012-08-26T04:10:00.000-07:00

I recently bought the 12 inch Dark Shadows figure of Quentin Collins, a product from Majestic Studios. It wasn't only hard to find but there wasn't easy to find pictures of it either, so therefore I'll post some here.

It's well sculpted and has a very close resemblance to actor David Selby, of course with a very Quentin-esque aura of a snarky personality.

Smug.

I'm not completely sure about the profile of the nose though, Selby's nose looks a tad smaller to me.

Since he was an werewolf a extra werewolf head and sets of arms are added with him.

I do find both the head-sculpts very good, they have lots of details and the paint is layered in different shades. Although it looks good the werewolf head isn't 100% accurate, in the series the tip of his nose is black and the eyes weren't blue as Selby's because stuntman Alex Stevens portrayed all the Dark Shadows werewolves.
Also the werewolf hands are very well done.

I really appreciate the multi layered clothing. Quentin has a whole shirt and west under his jacket and even socks in his shoes. This is not always the case with some figures I've bought.
A nit-pick I have is that the tie looks a bit sloppy made, it's very simple and not very wide as the one seen in the series. There's no pin for the tie either. This is something I can easily fix though.

The body is quite thin and has a impressive amount of joints. Not all of them are seen in this picture, the feet can be turned in many angles thanks to ball-joints. The neck is attached at two points, between the shoulders is a ball-joint, so it's possible to tilt the neck a little.

His right hand looks like it's supposed to hold something, he probably wants a glass of brandy.

Ready to attack, watch out.

Unforgettable (1996)

2012-04-25T09:47:00.001-07:00

I just finished watching a film I'd never heard about before today, which is strange because the actor is very well known to me. Ray Liotta stars as doctor David Krane in this far fetched sci-fi thriller directed by John Dahl.
After being acquitted of the brutally murder of his wife Dr. David Krane can't get the thought about finding the real murderer out of his mind. Although he were able to keep his job, his two daughters have been removed from his care.
When a scientist, Martha Briggs, presents her study of a drug mixed with spinal fluid which can transfer memories Krane sees this as a chance to find the killer by entering his dead wife's memories. He amazingly manage to do so but with the effect of straining his heart.

Yes, this is far-fetched science but I've been able to accept similar deus ex machinas in for example Brainstorm and Inception, so why not this spinal fluid drug too?
The phasing of the movie is a bit uneven, there is a long chasing scene which I wished was a little shorter. I guessed the point was to let Krane go through a situation that would worsen his heart condition but the scene came a bit off as a filler. Although I could say the same about many of the memory scenes, they're later revealed to have a more direct point to them than the first-impression gave.

Ray Liotta's David Krane comes off as stubborn, impatient and irresponsible. He also have a past of heavy drinking and violent tantrums, he is in other words the perfect suspect. Still it's impossible not to have some faith in him. Ray Liotta was a good choice for the character, he really knows how to act questionable types.

Unforgettable is visually well made but what stands out for me is the orchestration by Christopher Young and Pete Anthony which adds a lot to the mood of the film.

Overall I think watching the movie was time well spent. There's a lot of suspense, the ending is not obvious and it does a good job of creating the disorientation and strain Krane goes through by being imprinted by other's memories.

The future is often so gloomy.

2011-11-13T12:55:00.000-08:00

I've been watching some strange films in my life and science fiction gives film-makers an opportunity to really go for the weird aesthetic. Metropia looks a bit creepy at times because the actors in this film look a lot like cgi Gerry Anderson puppets with natural texture, eeek.

The story is set sometime in the future and Europe is connected by an underground travelling net. It's not so often I get to watch a dark gritty future set in Europe but we have such a dark and gritty past so why not.

As with so many futures the anxiety of a government's or a huge corporation's control over individuals is the focal point. As usual with this types of films the control is build further on the basis on what the depressing reality already is. In Metropia it's sure getting depressing, only a strand of hair on our body is enough to listen to our thoughts and communicate new ideas into our minds. Also all the television sets are equipped with hidden cameras so big-shot corporation creeps can spy on everyday people.

The style of the film is interesting and it's funny how aware I get of texture when all the people and clothes look like little dolls. I paid more attention to the visuals than the story which I felt didn't offer me much new material in this genre.

I've been watching that mathematician guy part 2

2011-08-21T04:16:00.000-07:00

I Think I better just divide those Goldblum posts. I've learned now to never try to make posts that feel like a never-ending burden instead of fun.

"Are we limp and hard to manage?"
Mac in Earth Girls Are Easy.

A bewildered Gina Davis, mmmmm.

This is clearly not the most challenging acting job Goldblum ever had.

His job here is to be good looking, I must give him credit for doing it remarkably well. This character solely exists so that female viewers first can go "Wow!" and then "Awwwww."

He's first introduced as an alien blue fur-ball which travels in a tiny colorful spaceship together with two wacky hornballs (Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans).

I'm blue da ba dee da ba die

Why this guy?

As mentioned Goldblum is hired in as eye candy and love interest of the female lead (Gina Davis). He appears as innocent and learning, he doesn't protest when he's given a dashing make-over and he's the neatest lover in movie history. He has this weird LSD-love touch which comes in handy throughout the film. Oh..and he wiggles his blue furry ears, how cute is that?

My Elevation Bono with flying elephant.

2011-08-09T14:40:00.000-07:00

I loved the flying elephant in U2's Elevation video.

Just one more thing....

2011-06-25T00:07:00.000-07:00

I'm sad now, I loved watching this guy. Peter Falk, the man who was famous for his portrayal of the scruffy looking Lt. Columbo. He lived a long life and was an active actor until 2009. He was such fun to watch, awesome actor. His deliveries were full of life, his gestures, his facial expressions, all the talent needed to build up a believable character.

He looked clever, even when acting dumb, something Columbo often did to trick the villains.

I need to plan a Peter Falk marathon now (weep).

Brilliant U2 music videos (Because there are not many of them)

2011-06-16T15:23:00.000-07:00

I love their music but their videos have often only concert or just standing singing type of clips. Not too interesting in other words.
U2 isn't completely without some good visual stuff though. For those remembering Achtung Baby the visuals were great intertwining own satellite tv station (Zoo Tv) and Bono's different stage personas The Fly, Mr. MacPhisto, Mirror Ball Man and someone who looked like a Zoo Tv crew member singing Bullet the Blue Sky, Running to Stand Still etc. Mmmm those were the days.
But they haven't been lazy after that, although it feels long between the music video gems there have been some brilliant videos from these guys.

Windows in the sky (alternate version)

There are other great music videos for this song but this video really took me by surprise. The flow of images is soothing to watch and the images themselves are what every U2 fan will feel happy to see.

Elevation

This video is just great fun and what I find rare from U2. A mishmash of strangeness complimented with hilarious and convincing clips of The Edge in Tomb Raider. Him of all people, that's adorable. Watch out for that air-floating elephant.

Stay (Faraway so Close)

Mmmm, the angels of Wim Wenders. U2 acts as helping and comforting angels while the viewers are escorted safely around in Berlin. Otto Sander and the beautiful Nastassja Kinski are in this little masterpiece too as well as in the film U2 did this song to (Far Away, So Close)

Lemon

An idea based on Victorian Eadweard J Muybridge's photographic studies of people in motion. The fabulous Mr. MacPhisto is in it doing all his grand moves.

All I Want is You

Anyone remember the film Freaks? Remember and remember, it was made in 1932. U2 seem to have a liking for it as this video shows. The story differs in that the lady in this video comes off as sweet, which makes this story sadder than the creepy Freaks.

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.

MacPhiiiiiisssssto!
Before Nolan fans told me that Batman Forever was shite (and basically all other no-Nolan Batman films for that matter) it was fun to watch. Frankly I still find it fun to watch.
Mr. MacPhisto discussed with Schumacher the possibility of a part in the movie as a villain. He was told he would have been perfect but Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey were already hired in for the crazy parts. Instead U2 made a song for the soundtrack and let MacPhisto star in it against The Fly.

I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight.

U2 apparently didn't have time to pose or act in a video which after watching this I think isn't a bad thing at all. I found this song to be one of their anonymous songs but this music video works in harmony with the music and made me interested in this tune. It's sweet in story and style.

The Unforgettable Fire

I think this must be my favourite. I love the glittering cityscapes, the lights and the seamless transitions from city scenes to the completely different winter sceneries. I love that slick looking tv with The Edge and Larry playing, I love the effect of the carousel drastically increasing the spin. The visuals are dramatic and the lighting makes my eyes yell "THANK YOU!" There's an dark atmosphere that lays thick in this video, the lyric and the music which is so gratifying. Indeed unforgettable.

One (Anton Corbijn version)

The band has of course scenes where they are standing playing but this video's slow moving pan and still like images makes it a pleasant watch. Corbijn filmed the band in drag and make-up and made them emotional touching and dignified. A classic, both video and music.

The Original of the Species

This is another video that made me like the song. Sometimes it seems that if the brain links good visuals to a tune that said tune increases it's attractive quality. Bono actually looks charming in this video. I feel inspired to make U2 fan art.

What on earth have I been doing lately?!

2011-06-06T11:37:00.000-07:00

I have been working on my DeviantArt gallery and used hours upon hours commenting on others artwork. I am trying my best to give good comments that not only says "Thumbs up", "Cool image" and similar.
This takes time but I of course hope for some comments back. I am taking this seriously because I upload print images that I intend to sell, I need money and hope my creative work is good enough.

This is one of my images for sale. (This image is a compressed jpg file)

I also post images that is not for sale but many of them can be downloaded and some of them goes under Creative Common, which means others can use the art work for non-commercial purposes.

I do also post fan art from time to time. Making fan art is a fun way to exercise your skills. I made this after a fellow deviant wrote she wished for a vampire drawing of Leonard Nimoy.

http://majkinja.deviantart.com/

My own merit.

2011-04-24T05:49:00.000-07:00

I posted earlier about some of my works in progress. One of them has come a long way since then.

First my running lady looks like this.

I often end up with something different than I had thought of first because I see other possibilities while working. I know is against the unwritten rules of Photoshop but I started to think that two of the filters would look good in combination with painting. I also added some style-buttons.

Now she looks like this.

My plan was really to let the image be a black lined drawing but one colour led to another and before I knew it I was working it as a painting instead. I like the dynamic of the image.
I'll add more to this but need to let it rest for a while and come back to it later. It's easier to spot errors or see new possibilities when a project is left out of sight in a period.

Happy Birthday Leonard Nimoy

2011-03-26T12:48:00.000-07:00

I absolutely adore this guy. If memory serves me right I believe I first saw him in Columbo and then later in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
It's his 80s birthday today, congratulation Leonard.

Lived long: Check
Prospered: Check

I will hereby celebrate by listing my favourite Leonard Nimoy characters.

Kovack from Baffeled

A cheesy lovable guy in a cheesy lovable film with a storyline of supernatural quality which makes no sense.
Actually the film Baffled was a pilot for a series that was never made. It was like the X-files of the seventies, just with the main characters being sweet instead of distant (sorry Mulder and Scully but, well).

As mentioned the story of Baffled was hard to follow but it had other qualities like pretty locations, some simple but clever editing, a creative "psychic vision" scene and the main couples (Nimoy & Susan Hampshire) joyful behaviour. They like addressing each other by saying their full names, which sounds a bit poetic at times.

Oh yes and I like this poster.

Dr. Barry Mayfield from Columbo

One cold opportunist that schemes a murder so clever that I wish he would have gotten away with it. Ooops, no this wasn't a spoiler, Columbo is a detective show where you learn who the murderer is before the investigation. I'm glad Nimoy got a murderer part in it, maybe it's not flattering but he was perfect. Mayfield also belongs to the exclusive club of villains that made the always so kind Lt. Columbo loose his temper.
I also like the name Mayfield, it's the first and only time I've heard that name.

Miller from Catlow

Talking about cold, this guy, Miller, takes the prize. A bounty hunter who seems to solely exist for the cause of making the life of our hero and anti-hero more difficult. Miller's goal is to hunt down Catlow (Yul Brynner), a funny wisecracking cattle thief.

Miller comes off as somebody who doesn't give a shit of whoever might be around him, he only sees his target. He doesn't give a shit about the beautiful woman who tries to seduce him, he doesn't give shit about the sheriff who needs his help (Miller just makes matters worse), he doesn't even give a shit that he has to battle Catlow naked, he's like a Western version of T-1000 (Wait an minute, Yul Brynner anyone?).
So to all of you who expect Nimoy to only do emotionless cold characters Miller is the ultimate.

Dr. David Kibner from Invasion of the Bodysnatchers

Aliens are taking over people's life while the original person withers to dust. They are hard to detect, so who to trust?

I dare say this is a great character because he has made fans of the film scratch their heads for decades now. Did we ever see the human being David Kibner or was he something else from the very beginning?
His behaviour and uttering confuse throughout the film. He's a good trusted friend of the main protagonist Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland). He is introduced before he enters the screen by Matthew talking about how Kibner is a understanding and brilliant psychologist. Through Matthew the viewer get the idea of Kibner as a patient listener, so when he finally shows up something seems chillingly wrong.

I have to hand it both to the actors and the writers, they convey paranoia perfectly. The lines that the characters are saying combined with their behavior keeps the viewers on edge, never sure who to trust. This is especially empathized through Nimoy's David Kibner.

William Bell from Fringe

We follow the Fringe team lead by FBI's Olivia Dunam, a troubled character with a strange past. She teams up with Peter Bishop, a guy with an even stranger past, Peter's father the brilliant but mentally compromised scientist Walter Bishop and his assistant.
It's John Noble as Walter Bishop that made this show worth watching for me. Crazy scientists are nothing new but John Nobel's performance is funny and sensitive. Walter is easy to care about.
With Walter the story of William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) surface, a story of a long and complicated friendship.

As with Kibner, William Bell is not shown when introduced to the show and, boy, this character must have one of the longest introduction since Mrs. Columbo.
It takes a season of the Fringe team talking about him before he actually shows up. After that long I felt like interviewing the character. My first question would be: Why are you blaming everything on poor lovely Walter?
A bit blunt I know but I couldn't help but feeling that Bell got away way too easily, he always came off as justified and he made wonderful Walter feel very bad. (Sigh, Walter my heart is bleeding for you.)
Having said that I have to be fair and mention that Bell did care greatly for Walter and in later episodes, well I won't spoil, so lets say he made sure Walter will get all the help he needs.

Paris from Mission:Impossible

According to the man himself he was first fascinated by the idea of playing an Impossible Force agent. With the character Paris there was the possibility to be different characters in every episode. Paris was like every Mission:Impossible agent, darn efficient and a 100% loyal to his team (except when being brainwashed). He was one of these agents that was a trouble magnet but it's not a surprise since he had to socialize a lot with bad guys. Being a magician was his everyday occupation, an expert of disguise while being in the team.
Sadly Nimoy got bored of the character realizing that Paris was more an idea than a full fleshed personality. Still Paris was an important member of the team, quick thinker, he seemed to have some humour but didn't show any joy over their foes grim demises. There were some episodes where Paris got to show some of his personality but mostly he played the part of others.
Like with most of the Impossible Force agents Paris was easy to like.

Mr. Spock from Star Trek

In the future a Federation starship will be on a five years mission exploring new worlds and civilizations. Lead by an hot captain who looses his shirt all the time and a stern first officer who has left his home-planet Vulcan to join the Federation fleet, adventures were set every week.

Oooooohhh, this is so obvious that it's obscene. Couldn't I've come up with something more original? The answer is NO.
There's no coming past this, Mr. Spock is not a Science Fiction icon for nothing.
For one this character survived cranky Paramount executives which believed his devilish appearance would put the viewers off. Oh how wrong they were. Mr. Spock went from a supposedly minor background character to a favourite in no time. The male viewers wanted to be him and the female viewers wanted to...well...you know.

Pointy eared, freaky eyebrows and seemingly emotionless Spock gave the insight from someone who observed humans with an alien eye. Even though he was half human on his mother side, he considered himself a Vulcan but realized soon that his mixed origin was a battle of it's own.

Another reason for this character to be on top of this list is how carefully and beautiful done his development of personality went. Spock could seem cold and stubborn but he was also artistic and most important philosophical. Through the years Spock's view on life changed without loosing his values but incorporated them into new observations and learning. The change was wonderful and may I say logical.
He became well rounded and even though his appearance is a bit unusual, after all this years he is like a real person.

Happy Birthday Leonard Nimoy.

Happy Brithday William Shatner!!!!

2011-03-22T09:09:00.000-07:00

Famous for his striking style of acting, mystical hair (Read about it here) and speaking like Every. Word. Is. Its. Own. Sentence. William Shatner is one of the most entertaining actor I've seen on screen.

Except from Star Trek I haven't watched much else of Mr. Shatner's work. Here's my favourites.

INCUBUS.

A film that I found hard to forget is "Incubus" from 1966. What a strange film. It's shot in black and white and the language throughout the film is Esperanto which gives it a European artsy Bergman feel to it.

STAR TREK.

Colourful and one of the most long-lived and famous science fiction shows to grace television. Half of the fun watching this is because of William Shatner, he's ridiculous and hot at the same time, how is that possible?

BOSTON LEGAL.

DENNY CRANE!!! Do I need to add more? This law-show is a lot of fun but isn't afraid to raise controversial questions. It's entertaining and provocative with one of the provoking elements being William Shatner's Denny Crane.

So congratulation with your 80s birthday William Shatner.

Work in progress.

2011-03-16T18:09:00.000-07:00

I'm trying to find the inspiration and will to do art-work again. I used to be very eager when I was younger but struggle to keep the interest.
I have a decent start here, works as a background. I think I'm going to leave the clean lines and shading. I need to add something, so that have to be my next step, I'm not sure what yet.

I'm not a spiritual person so I'm going to avoid making this into a "walk towards the light" image.

Another image I'm working on. This is inspired by a story I'm writing. I guess it's obvious I'm into Science Fiction. Sometimes when the writing goes stale it helps to draw an image that shows the idea of the story. This doesn't make much sense to other viewers I know but it helps arranging my thoughts.

This image takes forever. It might look easy but adding all those shaded blocks is tiring work. This is also inspired from the story I'm writing.

Here is another image that I started this week. When I start drawing I mostly have no idea what the finished result will look like. I'm looking forward to see how it will end. Those two heads started out in a desert landscape. I thought that was too much of an cliché, so I changed the surroundings. It's bland right now, the room needs furniture, details and shading.

I've been watching that mathematician guy. Part 1.

2011-03-10T20:33:00.000-08:00

By coincidence I got a peek of the latest Law & Order: Criminal Intent opening and recognized Jeff Goldblum as one of the detectives.
I had no idea the guy had ever been in a series so I took a look at his IMDB page. I then realized that I hadn't really watched many of his films at all. He kind of always stuck me as an eccentric supporting actor. To me he's best known as the mathematician guy Ian Malcom from Jurassic Park.
So with that in mind it's time for me to take a deep dive into Jeff Goldblum's work, learn about his acting abilities and find my favourite characters, films and the answer to the question: "can he really act?"

First some general Goldblum knowledge:
He's known for his unusual speech pattern, pauses in funny places, stutters now and then, often puts "uhms" and "aaaahhs" in his sentences. He's known to play nerdy scientists but that is a small part of the types he has portrayed. He has, may I say, a beautifully expressive face, almost to the extent of cartoony. This together with erratic behaviour, nervous rants, piano playing, hand waving and a soft voice is all known as....

And if you think he has attained this acting style by many years of increasing eccentricity......

....Wwwwwhat?! How dare you! My acting has always been this refined.

First I'll have a look at the characters.

"Aaaahh.... I'm too stoned to decipher that."

Bob in Dallas 362

I can't even try to imagine how tired and bored Scott Caan must have been when he came up with this character's name. It's so unsuitable, Goldblum doesn't look like a Bob, there's nothing Bob about him.

Why this guy?
Apart from the distraction of his name, Bob appears to be a very pleasant character. His situation is a bit awkward since he's the therapist for the troubled lead but also the lover of his client's mother. Funny thing is, everybody are okay with that.
Judging by his home his economy is good and he's well mannered, so he's like a safe haven.

You know, when I entered your place I became instantly dizzy for some reason.

I felt like adding this snapshot.

Even though he's happily stoned and laid-back he's aware of his challenging situation in keeping confidentiality. He has only one little outburst and even then he comes off as nice. Bob is overall just a sweetie-pie with a very stable personality. He's like plush and the other characters are lucky to have him around.

Very lucky indeed :)

The film Dallas 362 is okay. There's some neat stylistic choices in some scenes but the story itself about troubled friendship didn't really draw me in.

"I've NEVER expected metal ships."

Jack Bellicec in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

A group of San Francisco resident friends discover that the world is in the process of being taken over by aliens. Every person in the city is duplicated by a new born alien copy, the original withers and crumbles to dust.

Why this guy?

His rant at a book party illustrates perfectly why I find this character a blast.

Watch out, this one is bitter:

He is so bitter that tears flow from his eyes.

It's awkward and childlike which make me

wonder about his upbringing.

I guess his dream wasn't to work at a mud-bath.

"Carl, go take a walk in the rain."

Agent Fulbright in Fay Grim.

Quite a humourless CIA agent, Fulbright, is on a constant hunt after a mysterious guy named Henry Fool. Latter wrote some books that functions as plot devices in a story about espionage.

The film insists that there's something fishy about Fulbright, it comes down to the truth about the books and the fact that he was in Afghanistan at the same time as Henry.

"Fay Grim" is a sequel to "Henry Fool" which was a different type of movie.

Well, what do I care what you think of me.

Why this guy?

Goldblum is acting serious and intense in a farce that plays out like a thriller but shows to be nothing but a farce. The plot is so messy to follow that I wonder if it was ever meant to be understood at all.

Frankly I doubt that Goldblum had any idea of what half of the character's lines meant, but he is completely convincing as someone with knowledge and determination. He doesn't flinch away for a second from the deadpan act.

He's all business, he's blatantly rude to his partner, he doesn't seem to like anybody, he get's easily annoyed and acts like he's under a lot of stress.

At the end of the film I couldn't help feeling sad for him. He wasn't given any redeeming qualities but still I can't see that he deserved what was getting to him. It was like the writer didn't give him a chance.

Did this man have a life at all?

Uptight and lonely.

"My way is simpler. I was just gonna shoot you once in the forehead and then go home. "

Mickey Holliday in Mad Dog Time.

Brass balls you say. Prove it!

Suave and swaggering, acting like he's at the top of the game. He knows he's in trouble because Vic's getting out of the loony bin, Mick has been entertaining the girlfriend of Vic and the whole mobster community can't wait for Mickey Holliday's demise.
Everyone seem to want him dead, one foe nuttier than the first one. Mickey has to constantly prove himself in duels and intrigues. They all have a hope that Vic will make sure Mickey will end up in an early grave but just to be sure they keep challenging him. Bullets flies and blood flow.
When it comes to Vic Mickey has an ace up his sleeve, only he knows where Vic's pregnant girlfriend Grace is.

This room is very popular.

Why this guy?
This is one of the most controlled Goldblum performances I've seen and that's in a over-the-top parody of gangster movies. He could easily have done a classic nervous Goldblum in this film but clearly it's not what the director wanted. Mickey is the most normal character in a gallery of stereotypes. He does his best to keep an stern face but you can see underneath he's dead out scared. Goldblum acts carefully on a fine line opposite extremely caricatured characters.

Freshly out of the loony bin, yay.

It has gotten some beating from critics (yeah I'm looking at you Ebert) but from my point of view it's an entertaining film. Even though most of the characters are absurd it's not impossible to not care about some of them. The surroundings are few but rich. I love the Art Deco styled club and the mahogany furniture.

I dedicate this silver gun to Gabriel Byrne for the most ridiculous performance ever.

"I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the insect is awake."

Seth Brundle in The Fly.

David Cronenberg is known for his gory but elegant studies of the flesh (hey this sounds disgusting already). This is what the film is, disgusting but I love Cronenberg's nasty imagination. In his hands the gore turns poetic and interesting. The Fly has the themes that is well know material for Cronenberg fans, metamorphosis, horror that emerge from within, mutation, disintegration of the body and recreation. The film is a remake but it belongs to the rare collection of good remakes.

Seth Brundle has achieved what others have dreamt about, he has constructed teleportation devices. All they need is some tweaking to work properly..... uh oh.

Animal abuse, part of Seth's job.

Why this guy?

Seth Brundle has one sympathetic character trait, he's a brilliant scientist. Unfortunately for him his jealousy and impatience devours his ability to think rationally. One drunken hazed trip in the transporter together with a uninvited fly brings the result of..... something that wanna make me puke.

Granted Seth goes through a slow metamorphosis after the insect fusions with him, so he's not hideous in the very beginning. It doesn't take long though before it's obvious his body has started to rot giving nutriment for what's developing underneath his skin.

His reaction and feelings fluctuates from anger, persistence, fright, sadness to acceptance and excitement. "It wants to... turn me into something else. That's not too terrible is it? Most people would give anything to be turned into something else."

It's sad, that is the film's intention. Between the gore it plays out as a tragedy as Seth's girlfriend has to witness his disintegration without being able to help him.

Goldblum must have been a great sport for doing this, he doesn't only make Quasimodo look hot in comparison, but it must have been tiring sitting in the make-up chair for ages. Both physical and acting wise is he a catch for this part. He works perfectly in the role as a eager scientist who turns sexually aggressive and he's surprisingly insect like already early on.

More to come....

Estée Lauder Sumptuous Color Mascara,Garnet

2011-02-01T14:02:00.000-08:00

This is one buy I wont regret. Many coloured mascaras don't give much colour on the eyelashes but this coloured mascara from Estée Lauder covers amazingly well.
This mascara is called "Garnet", it has a deep plum colour and is perfect for those who want to try out coloured mascara for the first time. Since it's quite dark it doesn't come of as too extreme. Without having seen it on others I can imagine it will go well with darker skin and different hair colours. Since it's not a screaming colour I believe it can be easily use with a versatile palette. The mascara is easy to remove and are not too sticky.

The eyeliner is loose eyeshadow called "Harbinger" from http://www.morganacryptoria.com/

Playmates Kirk and Spock at The City on the Edge of Forever.

For years I stuck with Art Asylum as a source for Star Trek figures. For a long time I've only bought one figure from another line, the Sideshow 1/4 scale figure Spock.
Now I've decided to loosen up a bit and give other manufactures a chance. I changed my mind about only sticking to Art Asylum when I saw Playmates' The City On The Edge Of Forever Kirk and Spock on the shelf in a little shop in Worthing UK.
They're dressed up in the 30s attire from the episode, seeing such an unusual costume on Kirk and Spock figures convinced me to buy them.

One of the reasons I haven't been tempted to buy, well I have to admit the shame, I thought older lines wouldn't be good. Thinking that only figures from the 00s would have proper likeness and details. I missed out years of collecting. A snob I am.

I really like their look, Playmates managed to sculpt a fairly good likeness. Spock's eyebrows are almost over the top elegant, I don't mind, their shapes are gorgeous if not completely accurate. As with the ears Spock's eyebrows changed a bit through the years in the series and films.
I like how sharp the figures eyes are painted, I often have come across figures that have a rather dull look on their eyes. Playmates Kirk and Spock have more expression. Spock even more so, he looks sort of mildly amused. The photo doesn't show it so well but I sense a little smirk over his mouth.
What can't be seen so well on the photos either is their questionable paint on the mouths. I think the colour looks too much like pale lipstick. On the other hand the shapes of their mouths look very much alike Shatner's and Nimoy's.

Looking at the side of the Spock-figure I think the nose looks too straight compared to Nimoy's but overall the profile is pretty much dead on. The mouth and the chin is beautiful sculpted.
Spock has a soft cap to hide his "rice-picker accident" ears but it can be taken of. The shape of the ears are simple but well captured the way they looked in most of the series.

Kirk's profile. He has a little smirk on his mouth too.

The figures have movable joints which can be positioned quite easily. They are a tad bit too loose on my figures. Since these are my first ones I can't say if this is a common problem with this line. They also struggle a bit too keep their balance on their delta-shield shaped bases.
Both the figure comes with a tricorder, a phaser and a communicator. They are not the accurate size but the details and paint are lovely.

The items fits in the figures firm grip, especially the communicators sits safely in Kirk and Spock's hands.

I'm planning to buy more of these special episode figures from Playmates. These two are from a 9" line, there's a 12" line which figures I've seen that looks really good too. Visit http://www.apieceoftheaction.net/ to see more of this line.

Games for Mac haven't been released in big numbers like they been for Windows. If you are into games being a Mac owner is a source for frustration. Thankfully there are game developers that provide some puzzles and action not exclusively for Windows.

Machinarium is filled with the former that is found in a charming industrial world inhabited only by robots. This game is also available for Linux and Windows and are the creation under independent studio Amanita.

The art work is sweet, it has a naive style that is filled to the brim with details. It's really what makes the game for me, there's so much to look at.

Puzzle.

Some levels have a unusual frame. I like how this adds a little mystery to what is on the other side of the room.

The story is simple, a tiny robot wish to get to the top of a city, save his girlfriend and let those who bullied him and others get their lesson.

Sometimes the protagonist thinks back at how he was humiliated by the bullies.

The game play is click and point, even though the game reminds me of a innocent book aimed at children you need to put an effort into solving the problems and puzzles.

I really suck at "5-in-a-row".

Of course it is possible to find some help if you are completely stuck and have no idea of what to do. If you move your pointer to the top-right side of the screen there are two helping icons, one of them leading to a mini-game which will lead to the answer. Too bad it couldn't help me with beating the nasty robot in the game of "5-in-a-row".

Overall I really enjoyed this game, visually it's stunning to look at and many of the solutions are not too obvious. The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer.

I absolutely love this film and I will forever go on loving it.
Made in 1984 this film directed by David Lynch might not be easy on the eye for those who prefer the latest in cgi. From my point of view it looks epic.

There's so many details and so much texture on the costumes and sets that I see something new whenever I re-watch.

The scale is grand, you get the feeling that the space surrounding goes further than what's seen in the film. Some of the machinery, gadgets and ships have a distinctive steampunk style to them.

The story is set in the year 10191 and revolves around a power struggle between different planet's leading houses. The Duke of House Atreides and his family is sent to planet Arakis, also called Dune, to mine the valuable spice Melange which is essential for interstellar space travel. The order is a trap and the beginning of the fulfillment of a prophecy.

I'm old enough to remember these stars as some of the greatest:

Sean Young the replicant Rachael in Blade Runner,

Kyle MacLachlan of Twin Peaks fame,

Patric Stewart known from Star Trek:The Next Generation,

Jürgen Prochnow who starred in Das Boot,

Max Von Sydow from The Exorcist,

Virginia Madsen was the lead in Candyman,

and finally Sting.

These are only the actors I knew of before I watched Dune, what a pleasant surprise I say.

Dune is a movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune. I haven't read the books and have heard that the film isn't completely accurate. Still it's a beautiful film on its own.
