This is an interesting technology article about an opportunity a GS troop experienced to go into a real science lab and make Graphene from the Trefoil GS cookies. Graphene is an ultrathin type of Carbon material that can be used in electronic applications. The scientists in the lab are working on developing a method of converting cheaper resources into this type of Carbon.

Where to Place Patches on a Brownie Tunic (Uniform)

This is an updated image of how the insignia and patches should be placed on the Brownie tunic. Participation patches go on the back of the tunic.

Suggestions: Sew on the patches. If you can't or do not have time to sew, research a local seamstress who will sew them on for a reasonable price. Some of the patches are iron-on, but I have heard mixed reviews on the permanency of this method.

I modified the school calendar that I keep updated for the PTA website so you will see school events on this calendar. I will continue to update our calendar with specific dates and times of other GS events as those dates become known.

You can go the the Girls Scouts of Greater Atlanta website to find cost, purchasing, and other information about the new Girl Guides, the Journeys and the badges/patches.

Here is a brief explanation and overview of the Guides and Journeys for the Daisy and Brownie levels:

The main goal of Daisy GS is to work on earning her petals for the flower that goes on the front of her tunic/vest. The middle of the flower represents the Girl Scout Promise and each petal represents one part of the Girl Scout Law. The girls should engage in activities that help them learn and understand each part of the law.

The new Girl Guide (which would really be used by the leader as a resource since it would be a little overwhelming for Kindergarten and First Graders) contains the information needed to guide the girls and leaders through the petal earning process.

Hint: Do not hand out petals to the girls one at a time as they earn them. Even if you put them in a bag and staple it to something they are taking home, petals will be lost. The best idea is to give the entire packet to the parent and suggest they attach the entire flower at one time.

There are 3 Journeys that the troop completes within the 1 to 2 year period of being a Daisy GS troop.

They fall under these headings for all of the troop levels with a more specific title for each individual level.

It's Your Story, Tell it! 3 Cheers for Animals (Journey 3)

A patch accompanies the completion of each journey.

As with the Daisy troops, Brownie troops have a new Girl Guide. The Brownie Girl Guide Binder provides the following information for the girls and leaders:

Handbook: The handbook includes Girl Scout history and traditions, a chart of all Girl Scout earned awards for that grade level, and a chart showing all badges for all grade levels. This section also includes a girl-friendly explanation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and the requirements for bridging to the next grade level.

Badges: This section includes badge requires for the Legacy, Financial Literacy, Cookie Business, Skill-Building, and Make Your Own badges. The requirements for Skill-Building Badges are sold separately, giving each girl the ability to customize her Girl’s Guide by adding badges that interest her.

My Girl Scouts: Scrapbook and journal pages allow each girl to customize her binder and keep a record of her Girl Scout experiences. In addition to pages for photos, friends’ autographs, and other mementos at all levels, Brownies and Juniors also have sticker pages.

The Brownies also have 3 Journeys they can complete within the 1 to 2 years they are a Brownie

New Georgia Legislation is Proposing that Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Pay Taxes for Cookie Sales and Popcorn Sales

As part of the 2010 Special Council on Tax Reform, House Bill 385 proposes to eliminate sales and use tax exemptions for non-profit organizations, specifically the Girl Scout cookie fundraiser and Boy Scout popcorn fundraiser.

What this may mean to you:

Cookies and popcorn prices may rise to cover the diversion of "raised " money to pay the "tax" on the product.
Boys and girls may simply raise less money, therefore, participate in less community service projects, go to less camps, and attend less events and field trips. Or, the boys and girls (and parents) may have to work even harder to raise the same amount of money.
Girls and boys (and troops) with serious financial constraints may not be able to purchase uniforms, patches/badges, and supplies. Some troops may need to dissolve because of this financial strain.

I won't pretend to know every intimate detail about where and how all of the money collected by the council and national is used, but I know that the money received by our troop goes back to the girls in our troop and into our community. No one is getting rich here and all of the volunteers are VOLUNTEERS. We are always thinking of ways to do more things for less money. We are NOT raising our money for pedicures or trips to Six Flags.

New this year is an iPhone application for locating cookie booth sales in your area.

If you have not already bought your favorite Girl Scout cookies, where can you go to buy some? Well you could hope to run into a booth sale outside your local grocery store, but why take the chance? Instead use the Cookie Locater application for your phone. The application is FREE and will save you some time and potentially gas money if you are driving around looking for a booth sale.

In iTunes the application is called Cookie Locater and as a reminder it is FREE.

World Thinking Day 2011

Our World Thinking Day event is only a couple of weeks away but we will be ready! We are representing Sweden again which is fabulous because we have many swaps left over from last year thanks to April and Brandon. Since our GS are one year older than they were during last year's Thinking Day, they will be more involved in the planning and execution of this year's event.

Below is a brief description of how we represented Sweden last year:

We created posters displaying facts about Sweden and Sweden's flag colored by our Daisy Girl Scouts.
We created safety pin swaps using a Swedish paper doll template (so cute!)
We served Swedish meatballs (from Ikea) and the Swedish Fish candy, both very popular.
We also displayed various books about Sweden.

Here is what we did in our meeting to expose our GS to their WTD country:

We learned about Pippi Longstocking and popular character from Swedish literature.
We dressed our Swedish paper dolls in traditional Swedish costumes.
We learned about and compared the Swedish Girl Guide law to the USA Girl Scout Law
We matched Swedish color words to English color words and connected them to our daisy petal law colors.

Thank goodness we were given a 3 day extension because of Snowmageddon 2011 but the new deadline is tomorrow at 11:59 PM. If you are selling cookies it's time to get your orders into your troop's cookie mom or dad. If you want to order cookies, call or e-mail your favorite Girl Scout and place your order.

Don't forget to look for cookie booth sales starting in February!

Selling Girl Scout cookies is a yummy way for us to raise money for our troop. Since our troop is still in first grade I have set a goal but there is not pressure to meet the goal, just to try our best. This year we have used our cookie money to fund field trips, to buy extra patches and supplies, and to supplement our community service project of sponsoring a foster teen. Older troops also use cookie money to fund summer camps. If we make enough money we can use it to buy our Brownie uniforms for next year and maybe plan some bigger excursions. I hope everyone has some fun and some time to relax during the school break. Our first January meeting is on the 10th. I have to double check my e-mails to see who is bringing snack and volunteering, but I will send out a reminder when we get closer to the meeting date.

Also, don't forget to mark your calendars with the date of our Investiture/re-dedication ceremony: January 24th. Family is invited to witness the ceremony.

What Country Should We Represent?

   Last year our troop represented Sweden at our local World Thinking Day event. Thanks to April and Brandon we had awesome Swedish paper doll swaps and we still have many left over. We also served Swedish Fish candy and Swedish meatballs (direct from Ikea.)
   The girls who attended toured many countries with their "passports" and had a great time.
   We can do Sweden again, but this time have the girls more involved in preparations for the day. We could even do some traditional costumes if someone is willing to sew. The good news would be that the swaps are already made. If we choose another country we can donate our swaps to another troop.
   I will find out our country options at the next Magnolia Service Unit meeting. Once we choose a country, we can decide if we also want to participate in International Night at the school.

Even though it will not be officially Winter, I would like our troop to do some fun "Winter Holidays Around the World" activities for our Dec. 6th meeting. This type of activity allows us to "journey" to other countries or cultures which also prepares the girls for World Thinking Day. My research has turned up some helpful links that I can use to design some activities that will work well with our troop (second year Daisy Girl Scouts). I think we will also make some type of craft using the pine cones that are all over my front yard. I will post pictures of our craft and any documents I may create for this meeting. Magnolia Service Unit Girl Scout Tree

You can find our Girl Scout tree in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel (across from the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center). The tree is conveniently located near the breakfast bar and restaurant where hopefully it will be noticed by many. There are many beautiful trees on display in the lobby but I think ours is the most creative.

Our troop is sponsoring a teen girl as part of the Forgotten Teen service project spearheaded by one of the older troops in our service unit. This is our second year sponsoring a teen. Last year we split a teen with another troop, but this year we are ambitiously sponsoring the full amount. Cobb Galleria Festival of Trees

We are so excited to have a Girl Scout themed tree on display in the lobby of the Embassy Suites Hotel. Our troop and several other Magnolia Service Unit troops are making ornaments for the tree. Our Christmas tree will be on display from November 22 to January 5. Bring your family and friends to check out the trees and to don't forget to "vote" for our tree. Our service unit will receive money for each "vote" we receive. I will post pictures of the tree as soon as it is up and decorated.

We are still a relatively new Girl Scout troop but we have already had some great experiences. This picture is from our field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center as Kindergarten Daisy GS. We has so much fun! Now our girls are in 1st grade and soon enough will be bridging to Brownies.
