When faced with a distributed processing challenge, my first instinct wasn't to reach for Kafka, RabbitMQ, or some other enterprise message broker - all carrying their own complexity taxes. Instead, I built a file-based job queue in Smalltalk that's been quietly powering my production systems for years.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;The Problem&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Distributed work processing is a common need. You have jobs that:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Need to survive image restarts&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Should process asynchronously&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Might need to run on separate machines&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Shouldn't be lost if something crashes&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;h2&gt;The Solution: Files and Rename&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The core insight is that the filesystem already solves most of these problems. Otherwise, it falls back to basic forking. No additional code needed - it just works.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;The Unix Philosophy in Action&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;This implementation follows the Unix philosophy: write programs that do one thing and do it well. The file queue does just that - reliable job distribution with minimal complexity.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It's not flashy, doesn't have a marketing site, and won't get you a $100M valuation. But it works, it's simple, and you can understand the entire implementation in a few minutes. Let's install a few things that we're going to need later, just to get the dependencies out of the way.  Login to your server/workstation as an admin user, someone who can sudo.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;sudo aptitude install bc zip build-essential apache2-threaded-dev ia32-libs&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now let's setup the user we're going to run Gemstone under.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;sudo adduser glass&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Add him to the admin group so he can sudo.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;sudo usermod -a -G admin glass&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Login as this user.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;su glasscd&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Download Gemstone and install it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;wget http://seaside.gemstone.com/scripts/installGemstone.shchmod +x installGemstone.sh ./installGemstone.sh&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Download some init scripts so we can setup Gemstone as a service rather than manually starting it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;wget http://onsmalltalk.com/downloads/gemstone_initd_scripts.tgztar xf gemstone_initd_scripts.tgz&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Edit each of these scripts and change the line RUNASUSER=USER to RUNASUSER=glass and change the first line to #!/bin/bash instead of #/bin/sh as the Gemstone scripts need bash and Ubuntu changed the bin/sh link to point to dash instead of bash which won't work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Install the init scripts. I'm still on 2.8 so that's what I'm loading.  If you're going to load 3.0, you'll need to edit the gs_fastcgi script accordingly as it's built to startup 2.8.  Just change the DAEMON line to runSeasideGems30 instead of runSeasideGems.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Click the admin button on the gem launcher and check commit on almost out of memory option (just in case loading anything takes up too much temp space), then run ConfigurationOfSeaside28 load in the workspace. Gemstone is now installed as a service, as is netldi and the Seaside FastCGI gems, and they'll start up automatically when the machine starts.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'm not thrilled with running the Seaside gems this way because if they die nothing will restart them.  I'll be following up later with a post on running the Seaside gems and maintenance gem under Monit which will ensure they're restarted should a gem crash for any reason.  Gemstone itself and netldi I'm not worried about and this approach should work fine.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since I did this on my workstation which already had apache installed as well as other things I run, I may have missed a dependency or two that I already had installed and didn't notice. It's slow, very slow, several seconds per mouse click. OmniBrowser is just to chatty. Fortunately Linux has a better way to do it: X11Forwarding. Run the GemTools client on the remote server and forward the UI for just that app to your workstation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now, if you have a mostly Windows background like I do, this might be something new to you, it certainly was to me. I'd kind of heard of it, but didn't realize what it was until today after I got it working. Just one more frakking cool thing Linux can do, much nicer than VNC/Remote Desktop because it means you don't have to install any window manager and the other hundred dependencies that go with it on the server. Every piece of software installed on a remote server is a piece of software that needs updated and/or could be hacked or make the next upgrade not go smoothly, so the less stuff installed on a server the better as far as I'm concerned.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I happen to be running the latest 64bit Ubuntu 10.4 LTS on a Linode server, so if you're running something else the steps might be slightly different. To prep the server, which I'm assuming is a headless server managed via ssh, you'll only need to install two packages. One to enable the X11 forwarding and one to install a library that the Squeak VM needs for its UI that's not installed by default on a headless server.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;sudo aptitude install xauth libgl1-mesa-dev ia32-libs&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;You'll also need to enable X11Forwarding in /etc/ssh/sshd_config by ensuring this line exists.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;X11Forwarding yes&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Restart sshd if you had to change this because it wasn't enabled.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now just upload the &lt;a href=&quot;http://seaside.gemstone.com/downloads.html&quot;&gt;GemTools&lt;/a&gt; one click image and unzip it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;scp GemTools-1.0-beta.8-244x.app.zip glass@serverName:ssh glass@serverNameunzip GemTools-1.0-beta.8-244x.app.zip&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;And everything is ready to go. Now ssh in again but this time with forwarding and compression enabled.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;ssh -X -C glass@serverName&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now any graphical program started on the server from this session, will run on the server, but its UI will display as a window on the client as if it were running directly on the client. Now fire up GemTools on the server...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;cd GemTools-1.0-beta.8-244x.app./GemTools.sh&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;And GemTools will start up and it'll appear to run locally, but it's actually running remotely which means OmniBrowser can be as chatty as it likes, it's all runnning from localhost from its point of view. The X display, which is built to do this much better, is running on your machine. Now GemTools will run fast enough that you could actually develop directly in Gemstone if you like. Not that I actually would, Pharo has much better tool support.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I think this will be the first of a run of posts about Gemstone, there's a lot to learn when switching dialects. I can tell you this, well tested code ports easier, so apparently I've got a lot of tests to write that I probably should have written from the start. It's so easy that you can easily become fork happy and get yourself into trouble by launching too many processes.  About 6 months ago, my excessive background forking in a Seaside web app finally starting hurting; I'd have images that seemed to lock up for no reason using 100% CPU and they'd get killed by monitoring processes causing lost sessions.  There was a reason; the process scheduler in Squeak/Pharo just isn't built to handle a crazy amount of threads and everything will slow to a crawl if you launch too many.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I had a search result page in Seaside that launched about 10 background threads for every page render and then the page would poll for the results of those computations, collect up any results found, and AJAX them into the page.  Each one needs to run in its own thread because any one of them may hang up and take upwards of 30 seconds to finish its work even though the average time would be under a second.  I don't want all the results being stalled waiting for the one slow result, so it made sense to have each on its own thread.  This worked for quite a while with nothing but simple forking, but eventually, the load rose to the point that I needed a thread pool so I could limit the number of threads actually doing the work to a reasonable amount.  So, let's write a thread pool.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;First, we'll need a unit of work to put on the thread, similar to a block or a future.  Something we can return right away when an item is queued that can be checked for a result or used as a future result.  We'll start by declaring a worker class with a few instance variables I know I'll need.  A block for the actual work to be done, an expiration time to know if the work still needs to be done, a value cache to avoid doing the work more than once, a lock to block a calling thread treating the worker as a future value, and an error in case of failure to store the exception to be re-thrown on the main thread.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;Object subclass: #ThreadWorker    instanceVariableNames: 'block expires value lock error'    classVariableNames: ''    poolDictionaries: ''    category: 'ThreadPool'&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'll also want a few constructors for creating them, one that just takes a block, and one that takes a block and an expiration time.  For my app, if I don't have results within a certain amount of time, I just don't care anymore, so I'd rather have the work item expire and skip the work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;ThreadWorker class&amp;gt;&amp;gt;on: aBlock    ^ self new        block: aBlock;        yourself ThreadWorker class&amp;gt;&amp;gt;on: aBlock expires: aTime    ^ self new        block: aBlock;        expires: aTime;        yourself&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the instance side let's initialize the instance and set up the necessary accessors for the constructors above.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;ThreadWorker&amp;gt;&amp;gt;initialize    super initialize.    lock := Semaphore new ThreadWorker&amp;gt;&amp;gt;block: aBlock    block := aBlock ThreadWorker&amp;gt;&amp;gt;expires: aTime    expires := aTime&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now, since this is for use in a thread pool, I'll want a non-blocking method of forcing evaluation of the work so the thread worker isn't blocked.  So if the work hasn't expired, evaluate the block and store any errors, then signal the Semaphore so any waiting clients are unblocked.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;ThreadWorker&amp;gt;&amp;gt;evaluate    DateAndTime now &amp;lt; expires ifTrue:         [ [ value := block value ]             on: Error            do: [ :err | error := err ] ].    lock signal&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'll also want a possibly blocking value method for retrieving the results of the work.  If you call this right away, then it'll act like a future and block the caller until the queue has had time to process it using the evaluate method above. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;ThreadWorker&amp;gt;&amp;gt;value    lock isSignaled ifFalse: [ lock wait ].    &quot;rethrow any error from worker thread on calling thread&quot;    error ifNotNil:         [ error            privHandlerContext: thisContext;            signal ].    ^ value&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;But if you want to poll for a result, we'll need a method to see if the work has been done yet. Now we need a queue to make use of it.  So we'll declare the class with some necessary instance variables and initialize them to some reasonable defaults along with some accessors to adjust the pool sizes.  Now, since a thread pool is generally, by nature, something you only want one of (there are always exceptions, but I prefer simplicity) then we'll just rely on Smalltalk itself to ensure only one pool by making all of the pool methods class methods and the ThreadPool the only instance. There are two main questions we need to ask ourselves to do this: are there enough threads or are there too many threads given the current workload. Once a worker is started, we'll want it to simply work forever and the shared queue will handle blocking the workers when there's no work to do. Which object database wasn't really important to me at the time, it was the API that I wanted, so I made the actual object store backing it pluggable and initially wrote two different store adaptors for it.  The first was a memory store which was little more than a dictionary of dictionaries against which I wrote all the unit tests.  The second was a prevayler style file based store that used SmartRefStream serialization and loaded everything from disk on startup; this provided a crash proof Squeak images which wouldn't lose data.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I figured eventually, for fun I might get around to writing adaptors for some of the other object database back-ends that are in use: &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.garret.ru/goods.html&quot;&gt;GOODS&lt;/a&gt; and Omnibase. There's nothing wrong with this approach but it'd be cooler if I had Seaside generate and render it on demand and serve as a good excuse to talk about serving up content statelessly in Seaside.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Seaside is a session based web framework, but there's nothing really session specific about a sitemap and I really don't want a new session created when a request for a sitemap is made.  There's a lot of overhead in doing that and sometimes you just want to serve up stuff statelessly.  When a request comes in, the application mounted on the base URL handles the request by plucking the session id out of the cookie or the URL and either creates a new session or finds the existing one needed to handle the current request. This is both a blessing and a curse.  It speeds up development tremendously but confuses the crap out of your users who don't understand why they can't copy URLs and instant message or email them to you.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These URLs come from callbacks, but you don't want to get rid of all callbacks since they're a major part of what makes programming in Seaside so enjoyable by removing the need to manually marshal state in URLs.  Once you get to the point where your app is working well enough that you are concerned about the URLs, you can identify those parts of your application that are mostly just navigation from one component to the next and start replacing callbacks with clean URLs encoding the necessary state in the URL as every other framework does.  This works well for those more web page parts of your site where you don't really need complex callbacks anyway.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Doing clean URLs in Seaside isn't very difficult, but unlike using callbacks, how you pass state with them is rather application-specific.  Seaside doesn't have simplistic controllers that receive requests and dispatch to views, but an actual control tree that maintains state between requests in the session.  Since the control tree is application-specific and varies depending on the developer's personal style, the URL routing, which has to build or change parts of the control tree, is also necessarily application-specific.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Basically there are two things you have to do, get rid of the _s and get rid of the _k.  I picked up these ideas from the squeak-dev list when Adrian from &lt;a href=&quot;http://cmsbox.com/&quot;&gt;cmsbox&lt;/a&gt; explained what they were doing.  He didn't post any code, just a quick description of the method, but it was more than enough to get me going.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Getting rid of the _s is trivial, it's a configuration option on the application config page.  Using that method, however, will cost you an initial redirect where Seaside sets a cookie and then redirects so it can detect the cookie on the following request.  This leaves you without the _s but immediately leaves you sitting on a page with a _k and c in the URL when you haven't even done anything but hit the site root; it's ugly.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you want clean URLs, at least for something as simple as page to page navigation where nothing fancy is going on you probably don't want this initial redirect, bots don't like it either.  The fix is to not enable cookie sessions via the config but to do it manually by tagging the response with the cookie on the way out if it isn't already there.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On your WASession subclass just override #returnResponse: with something like this:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;returnResponse: aResponse     (self currentRequest cookieAt: self application handlerCookieName)         ifNil: [ aResponse addCookie: self sessionCookie ].    ^ super returnResponse: aResponse&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;This adds the same cookie the config screen would without the redirect and thus without the initial ugly URL when a new session is instantiated.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We also have to remove the _s from generated callback URLs.  Add another override to extend the behavior of #actionUrlForKey: to strip the _s when a session cookie is found:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;actionUrlForKey: aString     | url |    url := super actionUrlForKey: aString.    (self currentRequest cookieAt: self application handlerCookieName)             ifNotNil: [ url parameters removeKey: self application handlerField ].    ^ url&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;This takes care of the _s, you'll never see it again.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The _k is a little more interesting, so I'll use this blog as my example.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I tend to use a root component which acts as an outer frame and has an instance variable for the current body, header, and footer components.  Sometimes some of this stuff in the root component might be expensive to get, so I don't want to have to do it more than once per session, or I just want it to persist between requests.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Normally when a request comes in without a _k, the current session will be invoked to create a new render loop main, which will be invoked to create a new instance of your root component and render it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I want to avoid this--though this part isn't strictly necessary if you're OK with each request creating a new instance of your root--and keep the existing instance of the root component as well as parse the URL to decide what component should be loaded as the current body.  This requires a custom #WARenderLoopMain subclass installed as the main class in the configuration.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This all starts at, go figure, #start: on the session class.  So we'll override the default implementation with this:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;start: aRequest     ^ self mainClass new        blog: blog;        start: aRequest&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here we see blog, which is an instance of the root component that I want to reuse.  I'm simply passing on the root component instance to the custom #WARenderLoopMain subclass. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This means my session class needs to keep track of the root component, easy enough to do in the #initialize of the root component.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;initialize    super initialize.    self session blog: self.    currentBody := SBPostsView new.&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now the custom WARenderLoopMain subclass has the root component.  A simple override of the #createRoot factory method allows me to return the same instance each time instead of creating a new one:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;createRoot    ^ blog ifNil: [ self rootClass new ]&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;At this point, I could override #start: and do all my URL parsing now, in the render loop, but I won't because I prefer to let each component parse the URL for itself taking its relevant state and loading itself up however it wishes.  The default behavior of #start: already allows this by invoking #initialRequest: on each visible component.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Now, this won't be an initial request, but a subsequent request on an already initialized component; however, about the only thing I ever use #initialRequest: for is parsing URLs, so I'm happy to just treat each request without a _k as an #initialRequest: to a component.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;#initialRequest: aRequest    &quot;parse aRequest url however you like&quot;&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Of course, parsing your URL is quite naturally application-specific so I'll leave this as an exercise to the reader.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At this point, I just grab the path from the URL and do a quick search for blog posts with a matching URL slug.  If one is found I load up that page as the current page, if not I check for any tags that match the slug and load up the posts in that tag.  If nothing is found I issue a 404 status and render the home page.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The only thing left to do now is render the URLs cleanly instead of with callbacks in your render methods.  Something like:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;html anchor    url: (self baseUrl addToPath: eachPost slug) asString;    with: eachPost name&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Note here that #baseUrl is not actually a method on a component but on the session.  After some profiling I found #baseUrl to be a very expensive method to call and since it never really changes it pays off very well to cache it in my component base class:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;&lt;code&gt;baseUrl    ^ (baseUrl ifNil: [ baseUrl := self session baseUrl ]) copy&lt;/code&gt;&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Note that when I'm rendering the anchor I'm actually modifying the #baseUrl's path so the cached copy needs to return a copy of itself whenever it's used.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Anchors with callbacks, when clicked in Seaside result in two HTTP requests to the server, the initial one which looks up the callback and invokes it, and a quick 302 redirect to the final URL to render that page.  By not using callbacks and rendering ordinary URLs I'm bypassing the callback phase completely and loading up my state in #initialRequest: which eliminates one of the HTTP requests.  Combined with the caching of the #baseUrl, this is what makes the page navigation feel so snappy.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'm sure some of this will likely change in 2.9 but at the moment I have no idea. Just makes more sense for a blog mostly about Smalltalk and Seaside to be written in Smalltalk and Seaside.  I haven't felt like writing for a long time so I'm hoping this change will make the blog more fun and get me paying attention to it again; she's been neglected for a while.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The code tops in at just under 800 lines so far for the Seaside, database and data migration, rss and atom feed, and google sitemap code.  It could have been less if I didn't have to support the atom feed or deal with all the existing links or data from the old Wordpress site without breaking them, but that wasn't an option.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hopefully, it's not full of bugs, but it supports clean URLs and a nicer threaded Ajax comment system.  It'll be interesting to see how managing it compares to managing Wordpress.  No more huge library of plugins or community to turn to, just my own simple Smalltalk code with the features I need and only the features I need. When hosting a website on a multi processor server, or several servers, you need to load balance your requests across several instances of Squeak to fully utilize the hardware and handle more load than a single Squeak VM is capable of dealing with.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;All serious Seaside applications that I'm aware of are front ended by Apache to offload the serving of static content like images, CSS files, JavaScript files, and static HTML while proxying only dynamic content to Seaside.  Apache is an awesome platform and absolutely should be one of the tools is your toolbox; however, it can be quite challenging to setup in such a way that it makes load balancing and deploying new code seamless to your users.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I want to thank Avi Bryant for &lt;a href=&quot;http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/seaside/2007-January/010215.html&quot;&gt;some tips about how DabbleDB handles this issue&lt;/a&gt; last year which gave me the basic approach and Lukas Renggli for some recent discussions that spurred me to finally spend some time on this issue and settle it for myself.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Previously I've used HAProxy, and when it became available moved to Apache's mod&lt;em&gt;proxy&lt;/em&gt;balancer module to load balance multiple Squeak VM's.  I found both approaches lacking when it came to rolling out new code without being forced to blow away all existing user sessions when restarting Squeak with newly updated application code.  Because of this I'd been rolling out code only during non peak hours when few users would be affected; however, I need to be able to roll out new code anytime and dynamically shift new sessions to the new servers while allowing the old VM's to remain up and running until their sessions expire and are no longer needed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I've now abandoned mod&lt;em&gt;proxy&lt;/em&gt;balancer in favor of mod_rewrite and a few scripts which allowed me to tailor a custom solution that gives me much more control allowing seamless deployment of new code while allowing Apache to launch Squeak VM's as necessary and on the fly to handle load.  The basic approach is as follows...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When a request comes in I use a rewrite condition to check for a cookie set by the Seaside telling me what server this request should be handled by.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If the cookie exists, I look up the server name in a rewrite map to find out what port that server is running on.  That port feeds directly into another rewrite map that runs a bash script which uses netcat to see if the port is open or closed and returns the result.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h5&gt;verifyPort&lt;/h5&gt;&lt;pre&gt;#!/bin/bashwhile read ARG; do  nc -z localhost $ARG  if [ $? = 0 ]; then    echo open$ARG  else    echo closed  fidone&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;If the port is open, I proxy the request directly to the server with a rewrite rule when it sees the word &quot;open&quot; in the result.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If the port is closed or if no cookie is found, I proxy the request on a random port chosen from the rewrite map that contains the server mappings. It also kills the UI process which isn't needed on a headless server and just wastes CPU cycles if left running.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Not that this process starts off with an immediate 60 second delay, this allows ample time for the image to startup and start receiving its first request and establish a session.  If you don't start with the delay, you'd see the image startup and immediately shut back down when it found it contained no active sessions (yes, I did this a few times before figuring out what the hell was happening).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Also, this being a low priority background process, I'm not concerned with using #allSubInstances as speed isn't relevant.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When a request hits Seaside for the first time, the root component of the Seaside app checks to see if the cookie is set and has the correct value. The price they make me pay in programming just isn't worth it for small systems.  I don't want my business logic in the database. I don't want to use a big mess of tables to model all my data as a handful of global variables, aka tables, that multiple applications share and modify freely.  What I do want from them, transactional persistence of my object model, they absolutely suck at and all attempts to shoehorn an object model into a relational database ends up being an exercise in frustration, compromise, and cussing.  I think using a database as an integration point between multiple applications is a terrible idea that just leads to a bunch of fragile applications and a data model you can't change for fear of breaking them.  Enough said, on to more object-oriented approaches!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Active Record&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ruby on Rails has brought the ActiveRecord pattern mainstream, which was as far as I know, first popularized in Martin Fowler's book &lt;a href=&quot;http://onsmalltalk.com/book-links/0321127420&quot;&gt;Patterns Of Enterprise Application Architecture&lt;/a&gt; which largely dealt with all the various known methods of mapping objects to databases.  Initially, I wasn't a fan of the pattern and preferred the more complex domain model with a metadata mapping, but having written an object-relational mapper at a previous gig, used several open-source ones, as well as tried out several pure object databases, I've come to appreciate the simplicity and explicitness of its simple API.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you have to work with a relational database, this is a fairly good compromise for doing so. You can't bind a real object model to a relational database cleanly without massive effort, so don't try, just revel in the fact that you're editing rows rather than trying to hide it.  It works reasonably well, and it's easy to get other team members to use it because it's simple.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&quot;Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication&quot; -- Leonardo Da Vinci&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Other Approaches&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;A total OO purist, or a young one still enamored with patternitis, wouldn't want objects to save themselves as an ActiveRecord does.   You can see this in the design of most object-oriented databases available, it's considered a sin to make you inherit from a class to obtain persistence.  I used to be one of those guys too, but I've changed my mind in favor of pragmatism.  The typical usage pattern is to create a connection to the OODB server which basically presents itself to you as a persistent dictionary of some sort where you put objects into it and then &quot;commit&quot; any unsaved changes.  They will save any object and leave it up to you what your object should look like, intruding as little as possible on your domain, so they say.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Behind the scenes there's some voodoo going on where this persistent dictionary tries to figure out what's actually been changed either by having installed some sort of write barrier that marks objects dirty automatically when they get changed, comparing your objects to a cached copy created when they were originally read, or sometimes even explicitly forcing the programmer to manually mark the object dirty.  The point of all of this complexity of course, is to minimize writes to the disk to reduce IO and keep things snappy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Simplicity Matters&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;What seems to be overlooked in this approach is the amount of accidental complexity that is imposed upon the programmer.  If I have to open a connection to get a persistent dictionary to work with, I now have to store this configuration information, manage the creation of this connection, possibly pool it if it's an expensive resource, and decide where to hang this dictionary so I can have access to it from within my application.  This is usually some sort of current session object I can always reach such as a WASession subclass in Seaside.  Now, this all actually seems pretty normal, but should it be?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I'm not saying this is wrong, but one has to be aware of the trade-offs made for any particular API or style.  At some point, you have to wonder if we're not suffering from some form of technical Stockholm syndrome where we forget that all this complexity is killing us and we forget just how painful it really is because we've grown accustomed to it.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Sit down and try explaining one of your programs that use some of this stuff to another programmer unfamiliar with your setup.  If you really pay attention, you'll notice just how much of the explaining you're doing has nothing to do with the actual problem you're trying to solve.  Much of it is just accidental complexity for plumbing and scaffolding that crept in.  If you spend more time explaining the persistence framework than your program and the actual problem it's solving, then maybe that's a problem you'll want to revisit sometime.  Do I really want to write code somewhat like...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;user := User firstName: 'Ramon' lastName: 'Leon'.self session commit: [ self session users at: user id put: user ].&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;with all the associated configuration setup and cognitive load of remembering what I called the accessor to get #users and how I'm hashing the user for this or that class while remembering the semantics of what exactly is committed, or whether I forgot to mark something dirty, or would I rather do something more straight forward and simple like this...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;user := User firstName: 'Ramon' lastName: 'Leon'.user save.&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;And just assume the object knows how to persist itself and there's no magic going on?  If I say save I just know it commits to disk, whether there were any changes or not.  No setup, no configuration, no magic, just save the damn object already.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Contrary to popular belief, disk IO is not the bottleneck, my time is the bottleneck.  Computers are cheap, ram is cheap, disks are cheap, programmer's time is usually by far the largest expense on any project.  Something simple that just works OK but solidly every time is far more useful to me than something complex that works really really well most of the time but still breaks in weird ways occasionally, forcing me to dig into someone else's complex code for change detection or topological insertion sorting and blow a week of &lt;em&gt;programmer time&lt;/em&gt; working on god damn plumbing.  I want to spend as much time as possible when programming working on my actual problem, not fighting with the persistence framework to get it to behave correctly or map my object correctly.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;A Real Solution&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Of course, GemStone is offering &lt;a href=&quot;http://seaside.gemstone.com/&quot;&gt;GLASS&lt;/a&gt;, a 4 gig persistent image that just magically solves all your problems.  That will be the preferred option for persistence when you really need to scale in the Seaside world, and I for one will be using it when necessary; however, it does require a 64 bit server and introduces the small additional complexity of changing to an entirely different Smalltalk and learning its class library.  Definitely an option &lt;em&gt;if&lt;/em&gt; you outgrow Squeak.  But will you?  I'll get into GemStone more in another post when I can get more into it and give it the attention it deserves, but my main point now is that there's still a need for simple GemStone'ish like persistence for Squeak.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Reality Check&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let's be honest, most apps don't need to scale.  Most apps in the real world are written to run small businesses, which DHH calls the fortune five million.  The simple fact is, in all likelihood scaling is not and probably won't ever be your problem.  We might like to think we're writing the next YouTube or Twitter, but odds are we're not.  You can make a career just replacing spreadsheets from hell with simple applications that make people lives easier without ever once hitting the limits of a single Squeak image (such was the inspiration for &lt;a href=&quot;http://dabbledb.com&quot;&gt;DabbleDb&lt;/a&gt;), so don't waste your time scaling.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You don't have a scaling problem unless you have a scaling problem.  Even if you do have an app that needs to scale, it'll probably need 2 or 3 back end supporting applications that don't and it's a waste of time making them scale if they don't need too.  If scaling ever becomes a problem, be happy, it's a nice problem to have unless you're doing something stupid like giving away all of your services for free and hoping you'll figure out that little money thing later on.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Conventions Rule&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ruby on Rails has shown us that beyond making things easier with ActiveRecord, things often need to be made more structured and less configurable.  Configuration is a hidden complexity that Java has shown can kill any chance for any real productivity, sometimes having more configuration than actual code.  It's amazing how much simpler programs can get if you just have the guts to make a few tough choices, decide how you want to do things, and always do it that way.  Ruby on Rails true contribution to the programming community was its convention over configuration philosophy, ActiveRecord itself was in use long before Rails.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Convention over configuration is really just a nice way of the framework writer saying &quot;This is how it's done and if you don't like it, tough.&quot;  The problem then of course becomes finding a framework with conventions you agree with, but it's a big world, you're probably a programmer if you're reading this, so if you can't find something, write your own.  The only problem with other people's frameworks is that they're &lt;em&gt;other&lt;/em&gt; people's frameworks.  There's nothing quite like living in a world of your own creation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;What I Wanted&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;I wanted something like ActiveRecord from Rails but not mapped to a relational database, that I could use with Seaside and Squeak for small applications.  I've accepted that if I need to scale, I'll use GemStone, this limits what I need from a persistence solution for Squeak.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For Squeak, I need a simple, fast, configuration free, crash-proof, easy to use object database that doesn't require heavy thinking to use, optimize, or explain to others that allows me to build and iterate prototypes and small applications quickly without having to keep a schema in sync or stop to figure out why something isn't working, or why it's too slow to be usable.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I don't want any complex indexing schemes to be necessary, which means I want something like a prevalence system where all the objects are kept in memory all the time so everything is just automatically fast.  I basically just want my classes in Squeak to be persistent and crash-proof.  I don't need a query language, I have the entire Smalltalk collections hierarchy at my disposal, and I sure as hell don't need SQL.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I also don't want a bunch of configuration.  If I want to find all the instances of a User in memory I can simply say...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;someUsers := User allInstances.&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;Without having to first go and configure what &lt;em&gt;memory&lt;/em&gt; #allInstances will refer to because obviously I want #allInstances in the current image.  After all, isn't a persistent image what we're really after to begin with?  Don't we just want our persistent objects to be available to us &lt;em&gt;as if&lt;/em&gt; they were just always in memory and the image could never crash?  Shouldn't our persistent API be nearly as simple?  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since I'm basically after a persistent image, I don't need any configuration; the image &lt;em&gt;is&lt;/em&gt; my configuration.  It is my unit of deployment and I've already got one per app/customer anyway.  I don't currently, nor do I plan on running multiple customers out of a single image so I can simply assume that when I persist an instance, it will be stored automatically in some subdirectory in the directory my image itself is in, overridable of course, but with a suitable default.  If I want to host another instance of a particular database, I'll put another image in a different directory and fire it up.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And now I'm finally getting to the point...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;SandstoneDb&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since I couldn't find anything that worked exactly the way I wanted, though Prevayler was pretty close, I just wrote my own.  It's a simple object database that uses SmartRefStreams to serialize clusters of objects to disk.  Ordinary ReferenceStreams can mix up your instance variables when deserializing older versions of a class.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The root of each cluster is an ActiveRecord / OODB hybrid.  It makes ActiveRecord a bit more object oriented by treating it as an &lt;a href=&quot;http://domaindrivendesign.org/discussion/messageboardarchive/Aggregates.html&quot;&gt;aggregate root&lt;/a&gt; and its class as a &lt;a href=&quot;http://domaindrivendesign.org/discussion/messageboardarchive/Repositories.html&quot;&gt;repository&lt;/a&gt; for its instances.  I'm mixing and matching what I like from &lt;a href=&quot;http://onsmalltalk.com/book-links/0321125215&quot;&gt;Domain Driven Design&lt;/a&gt;, Prevayler, and ActiveRecord into a single simple framework that suits me.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;SandstoneDb API&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;To use SandstoneDb, just subclass SDActiveRecord and restart your image to ensure the proper directories are created, that's it, there is no further configuration.  The database is kept in a subdirectory matching the name of the class in the same directory as the image.  This is a Prevayler like system so all data is kept in memory written to disk on save; on system startup, all data is loaded from disk back into memory.  This keeps the image itself small.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Like Prevayler, there's a startup cost associated with loading all the instances into memory and rebuilding the object graph, however once loaded, accessing your objects is blazing fast and you don't need to worry about indexing or special query syntaxes like you would with an on-disk database.  This of course limits the size of the database to whatever you're willing to put up with in load time and whatever you can fit in ram.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To give you a rough idea, loading up a 360 meg database containing about 73,000 hotel objects on my 3ghz Xeon Windows workstation takes about 57 minutes.  That's an average of about 5k per object.  Hefty and definitely pushing the upper limits of acceptable.  Of course, load time will vary depending upon your specific domain and the size of the objects.  This blog is nearly two years old and only has a few hundred objects varying from 2k to 90k, some of my customers have been using their small apps for nearly a year and only accumulated 500 to 600 business objects averaging 0.5k each.  Load time for apps this small is insignificant and using a relational database would be akin to using a sledgehammer to hang an index card with a thumbtack.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h3&gt;API&lt;/h3&gt;&lt;p&gt;SandstoneDb has a very simple API for querying and iterating on the class side representing the repository for those instances:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h4&gt;queries&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;ul&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#atId: (for fetching a record by its #id)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#atId:ifAbsent:&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#do: (for iterating all records)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#find: (for finding first matching record)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#find:ifAbsent:&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#find:ifPresent:&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#findAll (for grabbing all records)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#findAll: (for finding all matching record)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Being pretty much just variations of #select: and #detect:, little if any explanation is required for how to use these.  The #find naming is to make it clear these queries &lt;em&gt;could&lt;/em&gt; potentially be more expensive than just the standard #select: and #detect:. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Though it's memory-based now, I'm leaving open the option of future implementations that could be disk-based allowing larger databases than will fit in memory; the same API should work regardless.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There's an equally simple API for the instance side:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Accessors that come in handy for all persistent objects.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#id (a UUID string in base 36)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#createdOn&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#updatedOn&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#version (useful in critical sections to validate you're working on the version you expect)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#indexString (all instance variable's asStrings as a single string for easy searching)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Actions you can perform on a record.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#save (thread safe)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#save: (same as above but you can pass a block if you have other work you want done while the object is locked)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#critical: (grabs or creates a Monitor for thread safety)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#abortChanges (rollback to the last saved version)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#delete (thread safe)&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#validate (for subclasses to override and throw exceptions to prevent saves)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;You can freely have records holding references to other records but a record must be saved before it can be referenced.  If you attempted to save an object that references another record that answers true to #isNew, you'll get an exception.  Saves are not cascaded, only the programmer can know the proper save order his object model requires.  To do safe cascaded saves would require actual transactions.  Saves are always explicit, if you didn't save it, it wasn't saved, there is no magic, and you should never be left scratching your wondering if your objects were saved or not.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Events you can override to hook into a records life cycle.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onBeforeFirstSave&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onAfterFirstSave&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onBeforeSave &lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onAfterSave&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onBeforeDelete&lt;/li&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#onAfterDelete&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Be careful with these, if an exception occurs you will prevent the life cycle from completing properly, but then again, that might be what you intend.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A testing method you might find useful on occasion.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;    &lt;li&gt;#isNew (answers true prior to the first successful save)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Only subclass SDActiveRecord for aggregate roots where you need to be able to query for the object, for all other objects just use ordinary Smalltalk objects.  You DO NOT need to make every one of your domain objects into ActiveRecords, this is not Ruby on Rails, choosing your model carefully gives you natural transaction boundaries since the save of a single ActiveRecord and all ordinary objects contained within is atomic and stored in a single file.  There are no real transactions so you can not atomically save multiple ActiveRecords.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A good example of an aggregate root object would an #Order class, while its #LineItem class just be an ordinary Smalltalk object.  A #BlogPost is an aggregate root while a #BlogComment is an ordinary Smalltalk object.  #Order and #BlogPost would be ActiveRecords.  This allows you to query for #Order and #BlogPost but not for #LineItem and #BlogComment, which is as it should be, those items don't make much sense outside the context of their aggregate root and no other object in the system should be allowed to reference them directly, only aggregate roots can be referenced by other objects.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This of course means should you improperly reference say an #OrderItem from an object other than its parent #Order (which is the root of the file they're bother stored in), then you'll ultimately end up referencing a copy rather than the original because such a reference won't be able to maintain its identity after an image restart.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the real world, this is more than enough to write most applications.  Transactions are a nice to have feature, they are not a must-have feature and their value has been grossly oversold.  &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.eaipatterns.com/ramblings/18_starbucks.html&quot;&gt;Starbucks doesn't use a two-phase commit&lt;/a&gt;, and it's good to remind yourself that the world chugs on anyway, mistakes are sometimes made and corrective actions are taken, but you don't need transactions to do useful work. You are working on the same instances of these objects as other threads and you need to be aware of that to deal with concurrency correctly.  You can wrap a #save: around any chunk of code to ensure you have a lock on that object like so...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;auction save:[ auction addBid: (Bid price: 30 dollars user: self session currentUser) ].&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;While #critical: lets you decide when to call #save, in case you want other stuff inside the critical section of code to do something more complex than a simple implicit save.  When you're working with multiple distributed systems, like a credit card processor, transactions don't really cut it anyway so you might do something like save the record, get the auth, and if successful, update the record again with the new auth...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;pre&gt;auction critical: [     [ auction        acceptBid: aBid;    save;    authorizeBuyerCC;        save ]      on: Error do: [ :error | auction reopen; save ] ]&lt;/pre&gt;&lt;p&gt;That's about all there is to using it, there are some more things going on under the hood like crash recovery and startup but if you really want to know how that works, read the code.  &lt;a href=&quot;http://squeaksource.com/SandstoneDb.html&quot;&gt;SandstoneDb is available on SqueakSource&lt;/a&gt; and is MIT licensed and makes a handy development and prototyping or small application database for Seaside. I don't get to travel much but I've made the time to catch this one.  Looks like I'm going to my first ever Smalltalk conference, I'm looking forward to it.  The things that have caught my eye so far...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Any presentations/tutorials from Gemstone on the GLASS architecture, though I've had little time to play with the beta due to juggling too many side projects, I still see it as my future platform after I've pushed Squeak to its limits and buy a few new 64 bit servers that can run it.  The limited amount of time I did play with it convinced me of one thing for sure, it's damn fast and is going to be a hell of a platform for Seaside apps.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Randal Schwartz talk on persistence solutions for Seaside, mostly just to catch one of his talks, he's doing a great job evangelizing Seaside.  If you read up the #squeak IRC chat logs, you'll find Randal in there continuously pitching in and helping people out.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Michael Lucas-Smith's presentation on Web Velocity also catches my eye just to see what they've been up to with Seaside beyond the short screencast on his blog.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Andres Valloud's talk on Quality Measurements for Hash Functions.  Not sure what I'll get from the talk, but this guy's smart and I just have to catch it.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Gilad Bracha's talk on Tampering with Perfection: From Smalltalk to Newspeak.  Though I may never use it, I like language design so I'm very curious to see him speak on improving on Smalltalk, just for the ideas, always good to stretch the mind.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Colin Putney's talk on Thinly Sliced: Versioning with Monticello 2.  I use Monticello daily, have to see where it's headed.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since I've never been to one of these, I don't really know what to expect, but I'm sure it'll be interesting. After a bit of testing I traced the problem to multi element Ajax updates where I'm using the evaluator.  Stuff like this occasionally happens so it was time for some investigation.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I cracked open an older image and checked the version I'd been using and started reading the commit comments for each version looking for clues.  You can do this from &lt;a href=&quot;http://squeaksource.com&quot;&gt;SqueakSource&lt;/a&gt; but I usually just do it in Monticello directly.  After a bit of digging I find in Scriptaculous-lr.232.mcz the information I'm looking for, namely...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;NOTE: SUElement&gt;&gt;#render: does not call #update: anymore, directly use #update:, #replace:, #insert:, and #wrap: now. These methods finally accept any renderable object (string, block, ...) and also encode the contents correctly.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Seems Lukas changed the API to make things more intention revealing.  A quick trip through the app looking for evaluators and changing #render: to #update: and everything started working again.  Having made the necessary changes, and looking at the new code for a few minutes, I liked it and agree with API change.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What I want to point out is the importance of good commit comments (thanks Lukas) that allow those who use your frameworks to work out their problems.  Commit comments are the best place to share your thoughts about why you changed something or decided to go in a particular direction because they are, or should be, the first thing a developer reads before loading a new version of that code.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I also what to point out the process itself.  Being open source code, when things go wrong it's often up to you to solve your own problems.  Had I not found what I needed in the comments, I'd have started Googling and searching the archives of the Seaside-Dev list to see if anyone else had run into this issue.  If that fails, then I'd post to Seaside-Dev asking for help.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There's not a lot of documentation on Seaside and Scriptaculous in comparison to some other frameworks, but there's plenty of help to be found with just a little bit of effort on your part to do your homework and a great community ready and willing to help you out when you need it. This image is a bit smaller than previous ones because I've taken Glorp out since I'm not currently using it anymore.   I've also dumped the windows native fonts and use different default fonts due to my working from both Windows and Linux these days.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;rST (Remote Smalltalk) is now loaded because I plan on experimenting with it a bit.
