LectureTools App On The iPad Offers an alternative to clickers

LectureTools' app on the iPad could be transformative in the classroom as well as a flipped classroom tool.

The LectureTools iPad app, created by a University of Michigan startup of the same name, spun out of research by Perry Samson, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences who has won awards for his teaching practice.

The application offers an alternative to clickers that harnesses the potential of the iPad, turning it into one of the most active in-class learning and communication tools, with cloud based storage. Anything added to the app is instantly available online through students' LectureTools web accounts. This is important in situations where students only have access to iPads in the classroom, but not in the events for homework.

The app was piloted in David Montalvo's classrooms in the Bay Shore School District in New York.

The app comes with all the bells and whistles students are used to seeing in the LectureTools web application. But now, a sleeker design optimized for iPad enables students to use the tool during class and offline for remote studying.

Through LectureTools, instructors can present students with interactive activities, including multiple-choice, free response and image-based questions, and students can respond using their mobile device, now including iPads.

Below are five apps that help you file your income taxes:

H&R Block App. The "H&R Block Mobile" app is mostly a pass-along app that allows you to do some simple things like easily schedule appointments with an H&R Block representative, find a local office, roughly estimate your taxes, create a checklist of things you may need to remember later (and email it to yourself), and it can also give you some basic tax-related answers. Mostly, this is a clever app that gets you in the door so you either see an H&R Block representative in person or purchase full software from the company.

IRS2Go, the app is pretty bare bones and doesn’t allow you to file your taxes on your smartphone, it does let you check the status of your tax refund and get updates from the IRS.

MyTaxRefund App. Enter your information in the form and it will give you a good estimate of what your tax refund might be this year.

Ask a CPA. This free app gives some basic tips about taxes in a number of categories, but it's better if you have a specific question. You can ask any question for free. If all goes well, you'll get an answer. If you want a more reliable (and possibly more detailed) answer, there's another app called My Pocket CPA, which also lets you ask a question, but charges a fee (usually around $10) per answer. We recommend My Pocket CPA if you have a more serious question, as it has a more detailed interface for asking. With Ask a CPA, you're mostly limited to a text box.

TurboTax 2011. Intuit's TurboTax is the most popular tax software around, and for good reason. Like all versions, the iPad TurboTax app is quite user friendly, looks wonderful, and will guide you through the entire process of filing your federal and state returns, step by step. If your taxes are especially simple, there is also an iPhone and Android phone SnapTax app that can scan your W2 and fill most stuff out for you. TurboTax is likely how I'll be filling out my taxes this weekend.

Dream:ON app on the iPhone, designed by Richard Wiseman, a professor at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, who said it may be possible to influence dreams by monitoring people's sleep patterns to discern when they go into REM sleep (when dreaming happens), and then play soundscapes designed to create a desired dream.

The Dream:ON app, user can select from one of several prerecorded soundcapes such as a peaceful garden (the gentle twittering of birds) or ocean (waves lapping at the shore).

Then you would place the phone on your bed, where it will monitor your movements as you sleep -- and present you a chart of how much you move around in your sleep in the morning. The soundscape will not start playing until the phone has determined that you are in REM sleep.

When the app senses you are moving out of REM sleep, it will sound a gentle alarm that should wake you up. Then, it asks you to submit a brief description of your dreaming experience into a "dream catcher" database.

Android users who would also like to influence their dreams will be invited to participate in the experiment later this year.

Got a lot of money? want split the check for lunch or your buddy owes you money, lacking cash is no excuse if he's got an iPhone and PayPal account.

Bump Pay App, just like sending contact information with the Bump app, you can now transfer money the same way with Bump Pay. The free app asks for your email address when it's initially opened. You and your iPhone-wielding friend bump hands; when you feel the vibration, the money's a-moving.

The money will be associated with the email address you enter. If that one doesn't have a PayPal account associated with it, PayPal will send you an email to prompt you to create an account to get your money. (You can't set up a PayPal account within this app.)

If you have your checking account linked to PayPal, there are no fees for the transfer of funds. If your credit card is what's linked, there is a fee.

Bump Pay uses PayPal exclusively and is available only for iOS devices in the U.S. Just know you'll have to limit yourself to payments of less than $1,000 with this app.

Dolphine Browser app, which previously came with version 7.5 for Google Android phones in play, is now officially available with the permission of the developer for the BlackBerry App World.

At version 7.2, this app isn't quite as fresh as its native Android counterpart -- which sits at version 7.5 in the Play Store and offers Sonar voice features -- but it still brings its webzine and gesture-driven mannerisms that many appreciate.
