Instead of Megan or any other woman, Johnnie stepped in and leaned against the door. He’d been running his fingers through his hair a lot, so the blond strands lay all over his head. The sadness in his eyes made her heart twist and she stepped closer to him before gliding her fingers along his jawline. The stubble that had grown since he’d shaved this morning scraped against her fingertips. She wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her nose against his neck, inhaling his scent. Smoke. Alcohol. The faintest hint of aftershave. Musk. And him. Johnnie.

She planted kisses against his throat and up to his mouth. He groaned and pulled her closer, taking control of the kiss and dipping his tongue into her mouth. Heat pooled low in her belly, her pussy slickening in need.

“I’m so glad you’re here with me, gorgeous,” he whispered, thumbing her nipples and thrusting his erection against her.

Kendall melted at his words and smiled, pulling back to stare into his eyes, burning with a silver intensity that seemed to reach into her soul. But she wouldn’t tell him again that she loved him right now. He was dealing with too much. Besides, she wanted to know how deep his feelings went for her. She couldn’t face his rejection.

“Come out with me?” he asked quietly. “I’m about to tell a hilarious story about K-P. Well, it’s more about us but K-P walked in at the end and—“ He rubbed the back of his neck and he shrugged before forcing a smile onto his lips. “I’d like you to be out there.”

Unable to deny him as much as she wanted to ask they return to their room, Kendall nodded.

His grin wasn’t as bleak. Grabbing her hand, he moved away from the door, opened it, and then guided her out. He went to the center of the floor and whistled to call attention to himself.

“You’d never know just by looking at our ugly mugs how two little guys have woven their way into our hearts,” he began when the room fell silent. “I’m going to be a father, too, thanks to my old lady.” He nodded to Kendall and she blinked, heat rising to her cheeks, not expecting Johnnie to make such an announcement.

Claps and catcalls reached Kendall, Johnnie’s loudest of all. She didn’t know how to feel about having so much attention focused on her and wished Johnnie would’ve discussed his intentions with her, so she could’ve been better prepared.

Sliding into the seat she’d had earlier, she ignored the stares directed at her, balling her hands into fists to keep from screaming at everyone to focus elsewhere. Like on Johnnie, who was finally launching into the story he’d mentioned to her in the bathroom.

Losing herself in the cadence of his voice, Kendall blocked out everyone else and focused on the anecdote.

My Review:

As a fan of motorcycle romances, I didn't know what to expect with this one, given the warning attached to it. Let me start by saying: TAKE HEED OF THAT WARNING. When Ms. Kelly says excessive profanity, she means it. Misled isn't for the squeamish or the faint of heart.

Christopher "Outlaw" Caldwell is trying to rein in the Death Dwellers Motorcycle Club. He inherited the presidency upon the death of Joseph "Boss" "Big Joe" Foy. Loyalties are split because it was Outlaw himself who killed Boss, his idol and mentor. Outlaw knows no other life but that of the Death Dwellers and doesn't expect to ever find anyone he wants as his own.

Megan Foy escapes her mother's house after a particularly violent episode with her stepfather. She fears Thomas is going to kill her and her mother. When she hears her mother tell Thomas Big Joe is riding into town to get Meggie, Meggie decides there's no time to wait. She runs away, believing her father wants her with him and will get her mother out of the violent situation she finds herself in. Once she arrives in Hortensia, Washington, she isn't allowed on the MC's property and no one will tell her where her father is, leaving her to live the next month by a creek. Her path collides with Outlaw's when she steals five dollars from another Death Dweller member and she is brought to the club once she identifies herself.

Meggie is the angel to Outlaw's devil. She's young but has endured a lot in her eighteen years. It has given her the strength she needs to survive her stepfather's brutality, life on the streets, and Outlaw himself. This girl never listens to one freaking thing Outlaw orders her to do, unless it suits her, which usually it doesn't. The man is a big, sexy biker who is used to having his every word obeyed. Misled is violent. Ms. Kelly lets us know this is an MC in chaos within the ranks and at war outside. The body count is high with one particularly heartbreaking. The profanity Outlaw uses fits his character. Meggie calls him a psycho and his comeback is he's her psycho. Once he falls under Megan's spell, there's no going back and he turns into this super sexy Me-Caveman-This-My-Woman. In other words, look at Meggie too long and your life is in serious danger. He lets everyone, male and female, know that if Meggie tells them to jump, they ask how high and get right to jumping. Yet, he knows exactly who he is, and wrestles with his conscience. This battle results in a surprising twist. I had to admire Meggie's strength during this time. I surely wouldn't have been as strong and would've given in to every urge I had.

Misled gripped me from the opening pages. I found Chapter 1 hardest to read. Misled is emotional, sexy, violent, and, surprisingly, humorous in a couple spots. For instance, Outlaw teaching Meggie the correct terminology for the male and female anatomy. Other spots are completely heartbreaking.

The author doesn't plan to turn this into a series, but, I, for one, am already campaigning for Johnnie's story to be told.

The long narrow hallway looked as lush as everything else in his house. Ariel looked at the spotless dark wood floors lined by warm sand colored walls accentuated with expensive paintings. She bet all were originals.

“Well, off you go.” The plump housekeeper motioned to the hallway. “He’s in his music studio.”

Ariel bit the inside of her cheek, doubting her decision. Maybe it’d be best to ask the older woman to show her in. She turned to ask, finding the woman no longer stood next to her. Ariel looked around hoping to find her, realizing she stood in the middle of the room alone. She took a deep breath, glancing up at the vast arched ceiling, feeling it swallow her whole.

All right, here goes nothing. Ariel adjusted the tote on her shoulder and walked down the hall, following the origin of the music, slowing down as she approached a half closed door from where the melody came. The notes to a Nirvana song filled her ears. She closed her eyes, allowing his music to hypnotize her how it always did. God. She loved his music.

Some people frowned upon classical crossovers like Colin. Ariel bet he didn’t give a shit what anyone thought of his musical arrangements. He was an artist playing for the love of music and nothing else. He’d probably continue to mix classical with Pop, Rock, and Metallica for as long as he lived.

She drummed her foot on the floor, her insides squealing. Her favorite musician played on the other side of the door. She bid her time, enjoying the music. As tempted as Ariel was to let him know she’d arrived for her first day of work, she didn’t want to interrupt.

When Colin finished playing the Nirvana song, Ariel took a step forward ready to announce her presence. Then, the strings with the first notes to a gypsy song halted her mid-step. Ariel leaned on the wall, closing her eyes once more to hear him play. She resisted the impulse to remove her shoes and dance to the gypsy melody in his hall. Damn, he could play.

“Are you going to come in or stand there all day?” he asked from inside the room.

His voice startled her. Shit. She opened her eyes. How did he know she’d been there all along? Ariel cleared her throat and walked in. “Hi. I-I was waiting…” She motioned to his instrument. A palpable tension filled the air the moment her gaze met his, drawing her to him. His black T-shirt and jeans gave him a dark angel aura.

He wore his hair down without a ponytail. Colin stood next to his music stand. His stubble denser, framing his face, giving his piercing eyes a darker caramel shade. Ariel cast her gaze to the large skull ring on his left pinky finger. The man was a hot rocker playing Mozart.

“Let me make something clear to you.” He raked a hand through his hair, securing a strand behind his ear. “No one walks through that door when I’m in here practicing. Any questions?” Colin placed the bow on the stand and set his violin in its case.

Ariel regained her composure. “No questions. However, I think we need to set some ground rules.” She crossed the room to the bay window opposite from him. “If I’m going to be your assistant, there are some things we can’t do.” She ran her index finger along the edge of the window then placed her tote on the side table next to it. “For starters—” She turned and bumped into his strong chest.

“Enlighten me,” Colin said.

Her heart skipped a beat as she lifted her gaze to him, lingering on his mouth before she met his eyes. Ariel fought the need to kiss him again. How would she ever pull this off when he looked at her with those eyes? Colin trapped her between the bay window and him. He hadn’t touched her yet, but the heat radiating from him being so close ensnared her all the same. Ariel shifted on her feet, trying to set an inch or two of distance between them.

“For starters what, Ariel?” Colin placed a hand on either side of her, making it harder for her to escape. At her silence, he asked, “Are you going to answer me?”

“This.” Ariel rested a hand on his chest, to push him away, his warmth burning her palm. “If we’re going to work together, there won’t be any touching.” Her fingertips tingled at the thrum of his heartbeat. Colin glanced at her hand on his chest. Shit. She curled her fingers into a fist. What was she doing feeling his hard muscles?

“You mean you don’t want me to touch you like this?” He gripped her waist, and she jerked at the unexpected contact.

The heat of his grasp on her waist seeped through the thin layer of her clothes, stirring her insides. “Yes.” She shook her head. “No.”

Colin angled his head, closing the distance. “What else?” he asked, his lips a breath away from hers.

She closed her eyes. “There can’t be any more kiss—”

He closed his mouth on hers, not demanding, just giving. Colin drew her in, teasing until she asked for more. Ariel didn’t have the willpower to resist him, not when he kissed her like this. Not when she’d fantasized about being in his arms for ages. Damned temptation. Nothing went as planned. She ran her hands up his arms, yearning to touch his hair, allowing herself the small pleasure. Ariel tangled her fingers in his hair, pressing her breasts against his chest.

Colin groaned, opening his mouth wider, drawing her tongue in. He lifted her on top of the bay window seat, letting the décor pillows drop at his feet. He spread her legs apart until he stood between them.

He broke the kiss. “You should’ve never come today if you didn’t want me to kiss you again. I warned you yesterday.” He locked gazes with her. “If you don’t want me to touch you or kiss you, say it like you mean it. Don’t say it looking at me with sex hungry eyes.” He breathed in. “Ariel, I don’t just want to kiss you. I want to fuck you. Here and now. So tell me. Do you want me to stop?”

No. Yes. No. Her chest tightened, heat rose from her feet up her body, her insides stirred. She couldn’t say it like she meant it because she didn’t, or not look at him without being entranced by the lust in his eyes. No. The answer was no and exactly what she’d feared. Not being able to walk away from the man she’d dreamt about for years. My fantasy come true.

“Ariel?”

An inexplicable force drew her to this strange music genius, her Aerosmith turned Mozart as she’d called him many times before in her dreams, and fighting it was off the list. “Kiss me.”

Colin seized her mouth in another scorching kiss, his hands stroking her legs, bunching up her skirt at her waist.

My Review:

Ariel’s Song by Evie Knight

Colin Hoskins is a famous violinist who plays everything from Mozart to Metallica. He’s brilliant and world-renowned until a tragedy forces him out of the spotlight. He wants to be left alone, vowing never to perform or fall in love again.

Ariel Parks needs a job, so she answers an ad to become Colin’s assistant. Stranded in Great Britain, she can’t find two farthings to rub together. Her brother—and her inheritance—have gone AWOL. If Colin doesn’t hire her, she’ll end up not only stranded but homeless. Colin Hoskins has been her ultimate fantasy for years, so she considers landing a job with him quite a coup. She never expected the brilliant musician to be such a difficult recluse.

I really liked Ariel’s Song. Strong writing and a great premise moved the story along at a nice pace and kept me engaged. One particular plot point involving Ariel and Colin grated. It led to an avoidable misunderstanding had the scene played out a little differently. Ms. Knight wrote some very hot, thoroughly enjoyable, love scenes. Colin is a hero with trust issues due to a traumatic past involving his dead fiancé. No matter how he tries he can’t resist Ariel nor can Ariel resist him. However, the sex is what had me really liking Ariel’s Song instead of loving it. I felt a disconnect to Colin and Ariel until late in the book. I would’ve loved to have seen more banter between the two because, again, Ms. Knight has a knack for witty banter. All in all, this was a really good read and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that #2 in the In Bed With the Enemy Series will be about Julienne and Gerard.

It doesn’t matter how much you want to write there are always days when you think not one more word is going to be written. You search your mind for inspiration to no avail and you think that’s it… your writing career is over.

Ideas are an integral part of a writer’s life and sometimes they become illusive leaving your mind blundering around in the most dramatic, hair pulling “no one else ever has days like this” kind of way.

With your muse struggling to cooperate, inspiration can be found in some of the most unlikeliest places.

“Sing to me oh Muse”…

The nine muses of Greek Mythology were deities that gave artists, philosophers and individuals the necessary inspiration to write. Where are my muses when I’m struggling?

Inspiration can be everywhere and nowhere, perhaps just reading a magazine while having a coffee in your favourite place. People watching (a favourite of mine), television, dreaming about the handsome hero that saves you from all the bad in the world. It could be in the dead of night when you’re half asleep and frantically searching for a pencil and piece of paper, not finding any and ending up writing them on the wall so as not to forget.

The truth is that although I have days when I feel like throwing the towel in…I never would because I love what I do too much and my muse may take a rest now and then but not for long before I am filling the blank page in front of me with a new love story that has me sighing, crying and falling in love all over again.

BIO: I confess I've had a love affaire with vampires for several years now, especially warrior vampires, the kind found in the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and JR Ward. Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire. Batya helps him out… Quinlan showered, washing out the mass of his hair twice then applying Batya’s crème rinse until he’d have a half-way decent shot at getting the snarls out with a brush. Using her blow dryer, he scowled as he watched his damn hair fly around. Why couldn’t a vampire, especially a Guardsman, have some kind of preternatural power to remove snarls and dry his hair without electricity? “Want some coffee with your ‘shits’ and ‘damn-all-the-elf-lords-to-hell-and-back’?” He met Batya’s reflection in the mirror, and saw a mug extended in his direction. He shut the dryer off, turned around, and took the cup. “That bad, huh?” Batya chuckled. She had dimples, two of them. Not deep, but they were definitely there, beside her mouth. What could he possibly have to offer her?
“I have to attend my cousin’s wedding this weekend. Actually, I have to leave tomorrow afternoon. I don’t want to go alone for reasons I don’t wish to discuss right now. I need someone to accompany me. I’m offering that to you.”
“And you think I’m ‘to the point’?”
He smiled but didn’t say anything. She couldn’t stand the silence. She wanted to figure out his game. There had to be some sort of catch. “You want me to go to a wedding with you?”
“It’s in Connecticut. I would require your services until Sunday afternoon. All of your expenses would be paid, including a wardrobe which would be yours to keep after the weekend.”
“You need a date?”
“I would need you to appear as my girlfriend.”
“Is this a joke?”
“I wouldn’t joke about something like this. I’ve thought the entire thing through.”
“A man who looks like you should have no problem finding a real girlfriend to buy clothes for and flaunt in front of his family.” She thought for a moment. “Unless there’s something wrong with you.”
“There’s nothing wrong with me.” He raised his voice a bit. “I had planned on attending alone but circumstances have changed. I’m in a bind and from what I gather, you are too.”
Her instincts screamed to run in the opposite direction. She’d never been the type to fall for a scam. “I’m not interested in—”
“I’ll pay you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for your time.”
“What?” Apparently a side of crazy came with those good looks.
“One hundred and twenty-five thousand today, if you agree.” He pulled out a check from the inside pocket of the jacket he had draped on the back of the chair. He slipped the mint green paper across the table. “You’ll get the rest on Sunday afternoon.”
“That’s fifty grand a day.” She studied the check. It would take her years to make that kind of money working these shit-end jobs.
“I’m aware.” He nodded as if the money meant nothing. “I’m asking for your time, a commodity I believe should be well compensated.”
Too good to be true. “Do you make it a habit of paying women to be your girlfriend?”
“Pretend girlfriend,” he reminded her. “You would be the first.”
“Why me?”
“Does it matter?”
“What exactly do you expect me to do for that money?”
“I told you.” He narrowed his eyes. “I need a date for a long weekend. Everyone needs to think we’re a couple.”
“You’re willing to pay me to go away with you for four days. I’m supposed to take your word we’re going to a wedding in Connecticut? How do I know you won’t kidnap me and want to do all sorts of kinky stuff to me? You could be some sex-obsessed lunatic.”
“Kinky stuff?”
“Yeah, you know, like bondage and blindfolds.”
“Do you like that sort of thing?” He tried to conceal his smirk.

The Weekend Proposition by Ella Jade is an uplifting tale of two people finding love when they least expect it. It is both sweet and spicy with our plucky heroine, Coda, adding most of the spice and our sexy man package hero, Spencer, giving us a whole lot of sweet. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I can only hope Spenser’s brother, Tyler, gets his story next.

Review of REAL

Oh. My. Goodness. I've been panting to read this book since it came out. My wish finally came true and I'm on sensory overload. Completely. Freakin'. Overwhelmed. I'm both happy and sorry I catapulted it to the top of my reading list. Happy because it kept me so engrossed, I can't wait for book 2 and I want to reread Real all over again. Sorry because I became so engrossed I want to reread Real all again and I stole a bit of time this weekend to de-stress so I have to get back to deadlines and the end of the school year. I'm so worried Remy and Brooke won't stay together in Mine, but I'm completely caught up. I need my fix and his name is Remington 'Riptide' Tate. Good Gawdy, Miss Claudie...

Mixing Sci-fi and Romance

Soaring through the frigid Milky Way, a mischievous crew aboard Serenity get entangled in a government cover-up, involving a beautiful and deadly psychic, named River…which leads to a space-western adventure where Death makes itself at home. Captain Malcolm Reynolds discovers something atrocious and fights the good fight with his feisty crew, but his inner demons wage war against his morals as well.

It’s one of my favorite Sci-fi movies because even with Captain Mal involved in near death experiences where he shines as the reluctant hero…he also craves the intriguing Inara. She adds further tension to the plot by frustrating him. It’s positively splendid how Joss Whedon deepens the storyline with sexual tension.

It’s a human thing, the need to love and be loved. Can that powerful, often explosive, emotion be denied in the distant future since humans are supposed to evolve into something better? I believe the ability we possess to make ourselves vulnerable to love is the best thing about humans. Aliens are frequently depicted as cold, barbaric, soulless creatures like in Alien and Predator. They can time travel and build weapons of destruction to astound our human minds, but my favorite aliens are the ones who can love.

Buckle up! I’m going into the past now…all the way back to 1984, but watch Starman with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen to see how well Sci-fi mixes with romance. Jenny Hayden is beyond shocked when her dead husband Scott is cloned by an alien. She witnesses miraculous things with Starman/Scott, so she eventually sets out to help him. They have three days to get to his rendezvous point, or he will die. It’s funny, heartwarming, and also an adventure as Starman races to escape the US Army and police. Basically, this movie highlights “humans are at their best when things are at their worst.” Jeff Bridges plays Starman as a creature capable of tenderness, even love. I must watch this one again soon!

Back to the future with Andrew Niccol’s 1997 science fiction thriller, Gattaca. Starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, with Jude Law, these three strive to survive as best they can amidst a society where genetic discrimination is forbidden, but happens. Valids get the best jobs, yet in-valids are stuck with menial jobs because it is believed they will get sick more often, be less educated, and live shorter life-spans.

Ethan Hawke plays Vincent Anton Freeman (an in-valid) who dreams of going into space, and his task is to impersonate Jerome Eugene Morrow (Jude Law), a superstar swimmer with a genetic background few could compete with. The two strike a deal. The genetic warfare begins.

Where’s the romance? Ah…enter Irene Cassini who is a valid (Uma Thurman) and passion ignites! Vincent is thrust into a murder investigation where he becomes a suspect. The plot thickens as he hides his true identity and attempts to make it know to his brother, who is a valid, that fate is determined by each individual and not a genetic rap sheet.

This Sci-fi thriller has a sleek look to it, and it would have been all too easy to abandon the romance angle, but Vincent and Irene connecting and falling in love, despite the odds of them ever meeting, makes the film for me.

Becoming an astronaut? Absolutely, that is very cool. Gattaca (the agency in the film) has a futuristic setting, yet the technology certainly does not outshine the need for love and acceptance. Finding one’s place in society, one’s destiny…is never easy. In the world of Gattaca, Vincent decides his own destiny, and wants to share it with Irene.

It’s been said love makes the world go round. So without love as part of what makes us human, Earth might as well stop spinning. Sci-fi and romance? It’s written in the stars.

In The Twelfth Paladin, good against evil battles as an angel, demons, and a temptress extraordinaire, named Rachel Darnell, vie for the soul of Jake Cottrell. Jake foolishly dares Hell to burn him. Forbidden desire incited, I fell into Rachel’s maddening world feeling her splendid, bare breasts upon me. No rest for the wicked. A bit delirious, “Damn you,” slipped through my lips knowing I stood upon the jagged edge between life and death. Fuming with monstrous hunger, I danced on that edge feeling good and evil collide in every cell of my body. “Wait…oh…my God, just wait,” I said running my fingers through her black as midnight hair. “I’ll wait for nothing,” said Rachel skimming my neck with claws fit only for a beast. “You’re mine.” More bewitching kisses, irresistible and dreadful at the same time, demanded I fall into chaos. Tightening my grip on sin, I said, “You’re unbelievable, magnificent.” The computer screen flickered with a deep blue light as hatred in my soul grew for Rachel, but my flesh…cursed and weak, was so anxious for her essence it made me sick. You’ll be the death of me, but I’d die a happy man. Uh, hold on a second. I don’t want to die. Ready to escape her vindictive entrapment, I dared to look upon Rachel’s eternal beauty saying, “I won’t…can’t let you in.” “Too late.” Refusing to budge, Rachel slithered her smoking-hot body all over mine sparking a wildfire in my lust filled skin. “You beckoned me,” she said mesmerizing me with eyes so dark they had to be portals to Hell. Soft laughter, accompanied by a playful caress, extracted all fear while Rachel ingested the precious beams of moonlight. “You need me, Jake.” Left awestruck by the mystical presence, shadows froze at the mere sight of her. “Wrong…you need me,” I proclaimed as every inch of my throbbing, hard body burned for her. “Choose your words carefully, well…that is if you want to keep your tongue.” Sitting on top of me, she scraped my jaw with those deadly claws saying, “So shut up. I know what you crave. Yes…I…do.” Rachel slid down my tormented body making sure I’d regret rejecting her. Molten hot lips scorched my flesh, and then she chanted a devilish spell that devoured all guilt. Sexual torment, synthesized to the nth degree of potency, ignited in my veins with a vengeance. No, stop—don’t ever stop. Sh—shit. This can’t be happening again. No mercy existed as Rachel licked my face and then bit my bottom lip drawing fresh blood to quench her primitive thirst. Glaring into my eyes, she smiled wiping warm blood from her perfectly glazed, red lips. “Um, sin-filled wine.” Soulless eyes gleamed with unadulterated evil as her intoxicating scent and mouthwatering body seduced my soul. Choppy, maniacal rambling echoed like thunder and then dulled to become a terrifying murmur the likes of which only the Tower of Babble could contain. The hushed turbulence in the room frolicked with Rachel’s enticing lawlessness, until at long last…my conscience revved up to kick my ass. I halted Rachel saying, “I don’t want you anymore. To Hell with you!” I awoke sweating and exhausted from the lunacy buzzing throughout my mind. Heavy from the encounter, my eyes twitched. Free from Rachel’s spell, moonlight attacked optic nerves extinguishing the rampant fire inside me. Light? Yes, it’s virtuous…and when light is summoned, it’s an almighty force to be reckoned with. That was a priceless lesson for this seeker of mischief to learn. In the unguarded stillness of the night, I sat up in bed shaking my head while marveling at Rachel’s ardent pursuit. That beautiful…but dangerous bitch is still messing with me. Will it ever end? Feeling fresh, blood-ridden wounds on my chest made my heart flutter. “I let her into my dreams and now look at me,” I whispered catching my breath. Well, thank God I survived this one. Close call…yeah, really close. Sorry to say, the netherworld had splattered my nighttime reality with enviable, but hazardous sexual antics that, if accepted, had the ability to conquer any sense of righteousness I still retained.

With the 4th of July right around the corner, this is the perfect time to exchange recipes to have a few at our fingertips as we begin the celebrations. I want to thank Yvette Davis for inviting me to participate. At the end of the post, you can find links to all the other participating blogs for some great ideas! Cheers.

Too Loose Juice

I saw this recipe years ago in a food magazine. I tried it and, rest assured, it lives up to its name.

The juice for 12 lemons
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 (750 ML) Sparkling wine or champagne
1/4 cup gin
Ice
6 lemon slices
6 Maraschino cherries

Mix fresh-squeezed lemon juice, powdered sugar, and gin until blended. Add in sparkling wine/champagne. Pour over ice and garnish glass with lemon slice and cherry. Serves 6.

SoCo Slush

1 quart of Southern Comfort
1 frozen lemonade
1 frozen limeade
6 cans of Sprite
4 cups of water

In a large container, pour Southern Comfort, Sprite, lemonade and limeade. I always measured 2 cans of water in the lemonade and limeade containers. Mix well, then place in the freezer. Stir every 60-90 minutes until the drink gets a slush-y consistency. Serve.

If I'm not drinking in the comfort of my home, I always make sure to have a designated driver. These drinks sneak up on you and I've discovered it is always better to be safe than sorry.

New Orleans Style Red Beans and Rice

1 lb. Camelia Kidney Beans
1 onion
1 bell pepper
1/4 cup shallots
1 teaspoon garlic
2 tablespoons celery
1 tablespoon parsley
1 stick butter
1 lb. smoked sausage
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup evaporated milk

Clean and wash dry beans, then place in a deep pot with 9-10 cups of water. Place on heat and bring to a boil. Add finely chopped seasoning--onion, bell pepper, shallots, garlic, celery, and parsley. Stir well and pour in evaporated milk. Lower fire to a low medium and cover. Check intermittently and stir. After two hours, remove cover, raise heat, and add 1 stick of butter. For the next 20 minutes, keep a watch on pot because fire is higher so the water can boil off quickly and beans can burn. Add in smoked sausage, cook 10 minutes more, then serve over steamed, white rice. Salt and pepper to taste.

New Orleans Style Barbeque Shrimp

4 lbs of unpeeled jumbo shrimp
1 lb butter
1/2 cup olive oil
4 tablespoons Italian Seasoning
2 tablespoons chopped garlic
1 large onion, finely chopped
Salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste

Saute onions in the olive oil until transparent, add sticks of butter and melt, blending in with the olive oil and onions. Add in shrimp and cook until shrimp turn pink. Mix in garlic right before removing shrimp from the fire. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle in Italian seasoning along with the salt and pepper. For added spice, use cayenne pepper. Slice French bread to dip into the sauce.

Returning Pride excerpt:

It took Allison several seconds to realize where she was. She hadn’t intended on going this far up the beach. Looking around, she realized she was past the bluff. How could she have gone this far and not known it?

Blinking, she looked at Iian and said, “Wow, I guess I walked farther than I intended.” She tried for casual.

He signed as he spoke, mostly out of habit. “Doing some deep thinking?” He took her hand in his and started pulling them up the path to his house.

His hand was warm and she could feel his heart beat in her palm. Turning her head so he could read her lips, she said,“Yes, well…”

“Hang on,” he interrupted, “let’s get out of the rain.” He saw her surprise when the heavens chose that moment to open up and drench both of them. Smiling, he continued to pull her up the hill.

Quickly walking beside him, she kept her hand in his as he guided them through the rocky path lined with tall grass. The rain was cold and she realized the breeze was blowing the wind right through her light windbreaker.

All of a sudden she was very glad he’d come along when he did. She hadn’t been focused on the weather and the thought of being stuck on the beach in a storm gave her the chills. She’d grown up here and knew better than to go marching down the beach and not pay attention to the skies.

When they reached the back door of his house, he pulled her into the kitchen and reluctantly let go of her hand to help pull off her wet jacket. Then he pulled his own coat off and hung them on the hook on the laundry room wall.

She was rubbing her hands up and down her arms, trying to get warm, when he turned back around.

“Come on, let’s go into the living room. I’ll get a fire going.” Walking into the next room he looked back as she followed him slowly.

She watched him walking into the the next room. This was the first time she’d been in the large brick house. She’d seen it from the beach ever since she could remember. It always looked like a large castle shining on the hills above the beach. From her old bedroom window, she could just make out the brown roof poking up through the trees. Following him out of the large kitchen, she watched his back and enjoyed the view. He had always been very tall, but it wasn’t until high school that his shoulders had become so broad. He had played basketball all throughout junior high and high school, and she’d played on the girls team herself. Admitting it only once to her sister, the only reason she had tried out for the team was because she knew Iian had already made the boys team.

When she walked into the large living room, she noticed that he hadn’t bothered to turn on the lights. She saw him bent over the fireplace, his shirt and jeans were wet from the rain. Looking down at herself, she realized she too was drenched. Her white shirt clung to her skin. Quickly, while his back was turned, she tried to pull it loose and crossed her arms over her front.

Walking further into the dim room, she looked around. Even shadowed in darkness, she could tell it was decorated in warm colors and felt very comfortable. Iian finished lighting the fire and turned back to her.

“Come over here, you must be cold.” He still signed along as he spoke. She found it interesting to watch his hands. Could she really be turned on by just watching his hands?

An Interview with Jill Sanders:

Tell us about Iian Jordan and Allison Adams: Iian is devilishly handsome. He lost his hearing at the age of 18 during a boat accident that claimed his father's life. He has had a thing for Allison since he was young and has always been a little shy around her. Allison is an artist, that had hid her art away until two years ago after being discovered. She moved away to California where she became an overnight success. Missing the slower pace of home,, she returns home to find her mother battling Alzheimer's. She too has had a secret thing for Iian, but has always believed he never felt anything for her other than a sisterly affection. Until now.

How did you come up with the idea for the Pride Series? I initially started writing The Pride Series while sitting in my Skateboard/Snowboard shop in Colorado. I continued to write the stories for a few years, when I had time. Then we moved to rural Texas and I decided to do something with them. Now, thanks to the slower life we can have down here, I'm enjoying writing full time.

How has writing changed you? I'd like to think I'm a less crazy for getting these people and stories out of my head. But, there are a lot more still in there. I do get to enjoy working from home and spend most of my time writing my next books and series.

Picture Perfect

from Chapter 18

"One by one, the courses came. The warm winter salad, consisting of red-leaf lettuce and sliced mushrooms, olive oil, garlic, and lemon, preceded the main course of lobster stuffed with crabmeat. The food was fantastic, adding an extra sparkle to her evening. Elliot's transformation had Alex floating on a cloud. She laughed at the few silly jokes he loosened up enough to tell."

Warm Winter Salad

1 large bag baby spinach

1 large head of red leaf lettuce

1 cup of sliced mushrooms

1 red bell pepper

1 yellow bell pepper

1 green bell pepper

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1/2 cup olive oil

1 lemon

Salt and peper to taste

Remove stems from spinach, then wash and drain it along with the red leaf lettuce. Once dry, place in bowl, squeeze lemon juice over the greens and set aside. Cut bell peppers in half, remove seeds, and wash. Afterwards, sliver the bell pepper into thin strips. Heat the olive oil and garlic. Add in mushrooms and saute. Add in peppers and mix. Keep over fire no more than one minute, only long enough to heat. Spoon mushroom/3 pepper combo over the greens. Serve warm.

Lobster Stuffed with Crabmeat

2 10 oz. whole lobsters

1 lb. jumbo lump crabmeat

1/2 cup finely chopped white onion

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1/4 cup chopped flat leaf parsley

3 tablespoons butter

Breadcrumbs

Saute onion, garlic, and lemon juice in 2 tablespoons of butter. When seasoning is softened remove from heat. Carefully fold in crabmeat, being careful not to break the lumps. Set aside.

Drop lobsters into rapidly boiling salted water. Let boil ten minutes before removing. Split lobsters in half, lengthwise. Load crabmeat onto the 4 halves and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve hot.

New Orleans is renowned for both her food and her music. In Picture Perfect, several dishes are mentioned, including gumbo. Over the next several days, I will post recipe(s) taken from the novel. The songs on the playlist were created as we discovered the characters' musical preferences. Elliot loves Classical Music while Alex is a huge fan of Prince. There's one particular song that is our stalwart matriarch's, Julia Walker, favorite. The other songs are listed because of an association with New Orleans and/or because of what we were thinking as we wrote a particular scene.

Sit back and enjoy. Better yet, listen to the playlist as you prepare one of the dishes.

Chapter 45

"Sitting at the chef's table at the Seabreeze, Alex dipped her spoon into her bowl of gumbo and sipped it. Jade had come to the shop earlier and given her a good scolding for not answering her calls the past four days."

Shirley's Seafood Gumbo Recipe:

1 large onion
1/2 bell pepper
2 cloves garlic
1/2 cup cooking oil
1 bay leaf
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1/4 cup shallots
2 lbs medium shrimp
1 pint oysters
3 crabs, halved
1/2 lb jumbo lump crabmeat (picked for shells)
3 qts water
4 tbsp flour
Pepper and salt to taste

Add flour to heated cooking oil. Stir until flour turns brown (this is the roux). Add onion, bell pepper, garlic, shallots, parsley and bayleaf to dark roux. Cook seasoning until soft. Stir in water and let simmer for 15 minutes. Add shrimp and crab halves. Simmer 10 minutes more before adding in remaining ingredients. Salt and pepper to taste and serve over hot, white rice.

Note: Leslie adds cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes for a spicier gumbo.

Good Reviews, Bad Reviews...and Selling Out.

I read a post this morning before going to church and it really got to me. An author felt as if she had sold out by writing erotic romance.

Oh, really? Are you kidding me?

Her other books, the ones that tanked and led to her great downfall, would benefit in the long run. The readers of her erotic romances would now buy the books she really wanted out there. In essence, she did what needed doing to get her true art, sold. She doubted, however, she would ever recoup all the money she had pumped into her masterpieces.

Hello...? Anybody home in there?

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, yes? When those opinions apply to yourself and your life, you are even more entitled to them. Therefore, she passed her opinion about herself and her writing and announced to the world her erotic romances that have been praised made her a "sell out".

I began to wonder what made her go off on that tangent. Why would she consider herself a sell out and not a gifted writer with a God given talent? Why wouldn't she celebrate her ability to be able to find another genre she wrote so well in that she connected with a large readership? Perhaps, it is the half-full versus half-empty theory. Look at a glass as half full and you're putting a positive spin on things; when it is viewed as half-empty, it has negative connotations. To me, she insulted not only her readers but herself and her talent. My personal affront came when she referred to the Goodreads audience as mother effers. Wait, what? I'm not only a writer and a reader but a member of the Goodreads community and I take umbrage to being called an MF. There's no need to lash out if others are passing opinions on comments you put out there for the world to see. And it is definitely uncalled for to call people out of their names as you did.

As for you calling yourself a sell out. So be it. You're the one who has to look at yourself in the mirror every morning. Whether you see a sell out or a gifted writer is completely up to you.

C'est la vie.

Tomorrow is release day for Picture Perfect and we are waiting with baited breath for the reviews to come in. We've had two so far and both had us jumping up and down in happiness. However, I'm bracing myself for the not-so-good reviews, too. Reviews are necessary. They can propel your mood to incredible heights and send you crashing back to earth in one day. The good ones urge you on and the less than stellar ones give you pause. They help you to learn and hone your writing skills. We, as writers, thrive on knowledge and new discoveries. An AHA moment where everything falls into place. I've discovered, over the years, it takes all types of reviews to sharpen your thinking and toughen your skin. Okay, I admit it, I might sniffle if a review attacks me as a writer, instead of the storyline, the characters, the pacing. Oh, all right. I'm caught. YES, I sniffle at all of them.

Reviews are necessary. They allow other readers a glimpse into your story. I have read more than my fair share before I come to the end of a book, especially if they have spoilers and I'm at a point in a novel where I'm on pins and needles. It all started years ago when I read a book and three quarters into it when everything seemed to be going well for the H/h, the hero had sex in a garden with another woman and the heroine found them together. That was a nasty surprise and my heart broke for the heroine. Besides my being innately nosy, I didn't want that type of shock again.

Reviews are necessary. They give credibility to your writing. I'm a wreck right now. I want nothing but glowing, four or five star ratings. In the real world, that just doesn't happen. What one reader finds brilliant, another will see as rubbish. As a writer, the very thought that someone might dislike your work as art is painful. . As a reader, I can relate. I've loved books others have hated and hated books others have loved. Sometimes, I can't even pinpoint the reason why I didn't like a book. I just didn't. The books I've had that experience with make me wonder about my reasons for not liking a book more than the books I can readily explain what made me dislike it.

Years ago, I would send a note of thanks to every reviewer (not reader, mind you) who took the time to read my books. Positive, negative, or somewhere in between, I thanked them. These people didn't have to read my book, after all. Nowadays, it is a no no to comment on someone's review of your book. So I don't. But, here, on my blog, I can thank each and every one of you. For better or for worse, you took the time to read my book and took more time to gather your thoughts and express your opinion. Thank you.

Now, someone, please send me a bottle of scotch to drink when I receive the not so good reviews and a bottle of champagne for the kick ass ones.
