Show up at a BGR the Burger Joint restaurant tomorrow from 11 am to noon with “BGR” written on your person and you’ll receive a free hamburger or veggie burger. This is a one-day only deal.

There are BGR locations in Bethesda, Dupont Circle, and Old Town.

Play with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra wants you to play on stage with them next year. To celebrate the Music Center at Strathmore’s fifth anniversary, musicians over the age of 25 are invited to perform with the BSO on February 2, 2010.

In order to sign up, you’ll need to be able to read sheet music and play a standard orchestra instrument. You’ll also need to make time to attend the rehearsal sessions (dates to be announced). The final performance will feature Movement IV from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

You can register using this form on the BSO’s website. There is a $10 participant fee.

December 1: Jonathan Safran Foer at Sixth and I

Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Everything Is Illuminated
and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, will stop by Sixth and I Synagogue on Tuesday, December 1st. He’ll be discussing his newest book: Eating Animals.

This is Foer’s first nonfiction book. He wrote this book to sort out his reasons for being a vegetarian so he could better explain this decision to his children.

November 11: Mutemath

The band Mutemath is scheduled to play at the Sixth and I Synagogue on November 11th.The show starts at 8PM.

Tickets are on sale now through Ticketmaster. It is $22 for a single ticket or $15 per ticket if you buy a pack of four.

You can also enter to win tickets from the Washington City Paper.

Missing Child in Bethesda

15 year old Emily Hazel Dark is missing—she was last seen in the Glen Echo Heights section of Bethesda, Maryland.

She is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing 190 pounds. She has blue eyes and long brown hair.The picture below is the one accompanying the new release.

Anyone with information on Dark’s whereabouts is asked to call Montgomery County Police at 301-279-8000 or 240-773-5400.

November 2: Lyle Lovett at Strathmore

Looks like there are still some tickets left for the Lyle Lovett show at the Strathmore on November 2nd. As of this post, there are still tickets in the $60 and $80 range–which are located in the promenade upper tier sections.

The show starts at 8 PM that evening. The Strathmore is located right across from the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro stop.

Cheap Exercise Classes in Chinatown

The YWCA in Chinatown offers $6 exercise classes from Monday through Thursday every week. No membership is required. You’ll find a list of classes here.

The YWCA in Chinatown is located at 9th and G St, which is near the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro stop.

October 27: Drag Race

Dupont Circle’s annual Drag Queen Race is tonight! On the Tuesday before Halloween, costumed drag queens race on 17th street between Church and Q streets. You can check out some photos of previous years here and there’s a video here.

The weather may not be so great, but there will still probably be a huge crowd. You may want to show up early for that reason–the actual race begins at 9 PM, but organizers suggest showing up by 7 PM.

November 7: Bolly Blend Showcase

If you enjoy dance and/or Bollywood films, you’ll want to make sure to attend the Bolly Blend Showcase. This is a “red carpet” event (read: put on your Bollywood formal wear) held by the Dhoonya Dance Performance Company. You can expect Bollywood-style dance, as well as fusions of hip-hop, bellydance, Indian folk dance, and popular dance.

Tickets are $20 in advance, or $30 at the door. You can buy them online now.

The showcase starts at 8 PM on November 7th. The performance will be held in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Performing Arts Center, located at 7995 Georgia Avenue.

October 24: Contemporary Japanese Fashion

The Textile Museum is hosting an exhibit of contemporary Japanese fashion from the collection of Mary Baskett. The collection contains about 40 garments from designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. You’ll notice influences of traditional Japanese garments as well as origami in many of the designs.

Associate curator Lee Talbot is giving a gallery talk and tour of the collection on October 24 at 11 AM. The talk is free.

The exhibit will be open from October 17 through April 11, 2010. You’ll find the Textile Museum at 2320 S Street, NW,. It is closest the Dupont Circle on the Red Line. Admission to the museum is free, but they do suggest a $5 donation.
