She was the bad companion of many men, but no man owned her and no money in the world could buy her and she used men and their wealth and even their sexual prowess simply to feed her own indulgent lifestyle.

She was the secret desire of all men in her town and she was the envy of many women if they could admit it to themselves. He had a way of making his points by using common everyday terms and practices and yet there was so much wisdom and depth to what he was saying. Every time she approached and sat at the back there was a commotion and it was the one time in her life when the men looking at her annoyed her and she wished all the eyes of the crowd would get off her and leave her at peace alone at the back to simply listen.

As she listened to a number of his discourses it seemed uncanny how as soon as she had sat and made herself invisible to the commotion she had caused at her arrival and got to a place where she was quite comfortable enough to listen without people looking at her, he would suddenly finish off a story mid sentence and start another story about her. Every time she sat down to listen, this Rabbi started to preach as though he was sitting face to face in a room with only her in it and was preaching what he thought she needed to hear.

The first time she heard him he quoted the prophet Jeremiah and chapter nine and said that a wise man should not take glory in his wisdom and a strong and powerful man should not take glory in his power, nor a rich man should not take glory in his riches, but the only thing a man should take glory in is that he knows his Father in heaven and understands his Father's character.

This sermon was the first one she had heard. He took the time to go through everything she held important. She was one of the most powerful women in the town and he explained that all power is given by God and he can take the power off a person whenever he chooses. He went on to say it does not matter how strong you are and how many people you can control because even if you command an army you can still have your life taken by one battle or one disease you didn't see coming. Then he said all the wealth in the world, while it may buy your fleeting happiness on earth it does you no good in the eternal hell fire of Hades where many rich people end up. Then he talked about how beauty is only skin deep and true beauty is not something that has an outward appearance but rather it is a hidden thing found in the heart and the qualities of a holy women are much more enduring and wholesome then the prettiest girl in the world.

Everything the Rabbi said hit her and cut her like a knife and she could never seem to stay for hours like the others did. She mostly had to get up and leave as she was getting so hurt and cut up by what he was saying that she was going to find herself crying or shouting out at him in anger neither of which she wanted to do in public.

Finally the day had come today where she had decided to approach him and worship him and let him know that he had broken through to her and that she now understood that her whole life was meaningless and could he please somehow say something or do something that could give her hope as her life had lost all it's joy, the power was no more fun, her money disgusted her and even the taste of food and wine had turned bland.

How would he accept her? Would he be harsh and rebuke her for being such an unworthy harlot or would he live up to being that gentle man that she saw playing hide and seek with the children in the marketplace? Was there really a life for a lady like her, could she really one day have purpose and this inner beauty that those holy women she admired had. Could he wash away all her shame and make it clear to the world that there could be new life.

He'd healed lepers and they had come back into new life in community and were accepted by the priests and the people and were considered clean and able to go into the synagogue to worship, and he had healed all sorts of people, even his best followers used to be mere fishermen and not any learned Pharisee, surely this man was into the common folk, but would he accept her and declare to her peers that she was clean and a new creation? She almost vomited a few times on the way to the house where she knew he was. It was a very spiritual and devout man's house and she was going to interrupt him during dinner, but even this man liked the way she looked and like to sneak a peek when he thought she wasn't looking.

I urge you, don't let pride stop you from weeping in your next worship service, take the liberty to fall to your knees in church and weep and confess your sins at your Master's feet. Bring your best oil and anoint the foot of the cross and worship the only man in the world that NEVER lusted after me or any other women. With Peter's ship, The Teaching about the Cross, beginning to take on water, it became necessary for us to abandon ship. As we walk across the causeway of the Book of Acts, we are now going to be sailing with the Apostle Paul. Paul will bring us to our final destination. We are about to sail across the deep waters of the finished work of Christ, which is uncharted territory prior to the Pauline revelation. As we plumb the depths of these waters, we are going to find that the Apostle Paul was the first to show us the significance of the death of Christ. He proclaimed the Cross as good news! There is always one of two responses to this message; either it's received with thanksgiving or it's rejected as mere foolishness!

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS

"For the preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God" (I Cor. 1:18).

The term "preaching" is not one of the typical words the apostle uses when referring to the proclamation of the Cross. For example, in II Timothy 4:2, Paul instructs us to "Preach the Word." Here the apostle uses the Greek, kerusso, which signifies a herald. It refers to the one who announces clearly and loudly the entrance of the King. In like manner, we are to give a clear presentation of the gospel of salvation. Interestingly in I Corinthians 1:18, Paul employs the term Logos--the Word. So then, it is the Word of the Cross, which is the power of God unto salvation. It is the apostle's objective to contrast the Word of the Cross with the word of man.

The Cross to the natural man is mere foolishness--why, it's absurd to think that God would take on a human form, be crucified, and rise again in order to redeem mankind! To the natural man this is beyond the realm of reason. Therefore, Paul challenges the world to step forward and match its wisdom and knowledge with the wisdom and knowledge of God.

"Where is the wise [intelligentsia]? Where is the scribe [doctor of the law]? Where is the disputer [debater] of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?" (I Cor. 1:20).

Paul summons the world to answer these age-old questions, if they will. Where did man come from? How can he be made right with God? What is his purpose in life? What is his final destination? The natural man's attempt to answer these questions apart from God is like the man who's blind, searching in a dark room for a black cat that doesn't exist. The world's philosophy to the above is as follows:

1. Origins: In the dateless past, out of nothing came something, out of which life eventually emerged from the bogs of primeval seas. Over a 5-billion year period, this one cell entity called an amoeba evolved into a complex multi-billion celled being called modern man.

2. Justification: If my good deeds outweigh my bad deeds on the scales of life, God will accept me into heaven when I die.

3. Purpose: On one side of the coin, the epicurean philosophy is, "Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die." After all, you owe it to yourself to indulge in everything the world has to offer. On the other side of the coin, the stoic says you must devote yourself to fleshly inhibitions to find fulfillment in life.

4. Eternal Destiny: Most unregenerate men deny that there is life beyond the grave. In the words of Carl Sagan, the famous astronomer, "Death is the end!"

According to the Word of God, in the beginning God created man in His image (Gen. 1:26 cf. 2:7). John Milton said: "The greatness and sacredness of man's soul is attested by two facts: First, the creation of his soul in the image of the eternal God; and second, the price that had to be paid for the redemption of his soul." Today, man is justified by the grace of God through faith in the finished work of Christ, apart from works (Rom. 3:24 cf. I Cor. 15:1-4). Upon conversion, man's chief end in life is to glorify God, with whom he will spend eternity in the heavenlies (Rev. 4:11 cf. Col. 1:5).

The world by human wisdom will never know God! Thus, "it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe" (I Cor. 1:21). The phrase "foolishness of preaching" is the rationale of the skeptic--it's nothing but foolishness to them. But the preaching of the Cross is to those who are saved a demonstration of the power of God. It convicted us of our sins and brought us to salvation. The power of God transformed our lives!

UNLIMITED REDEMPTION

"For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time" (I Tim. 2:3-6).

The preaching of the Cross clearly teaches us that Christ died for all. The term "will" in this passage has the sense that God "desires" all men to be saved. If He willed it, then every man would be saved. Here again we have the sovereignty of God and human responsibility intersecting one another. God, in His sovereignty, convicts man through His Word, yet He never violates man's will. Man is responsible to believe the good news that Christ died for his sins.

Paul adds, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." A mediator is one who stands between two parties, he technically represents both sides. What better representative could the Godhead and man have than the person of Christ? He is perfectly suited for the task at hand, simply because He is God manifested in the flesh. Christ is the perfect Redeemer!

When Christ came into the world He gave Himself a ransom for all. In biblical times, the "ransom" was the price paid to purchase a slave out of slavery. In similar fashion, Christ stepped into the slave market of sin to redeem us back to God. While our salvation is free, it did not come without a cost. The ransom the Father required was blood, the precious blood of His dear Son. According to Paul's gospel, the scope of redemption is unlimited. Christ gave Himself a ransom "for" Gr. huper "on behalf of" all. A provision has been made for all, which is confirmed in II Corinthians 5:14: "If one died for all, then were all dead."

May I inquire, is there anyone reading these lines who does not believe that all men are dead in trespasses and sins when they enter this world? (Eph. 2:1-3). If you agree, then you must also agree that Christ died for all because this is the argument of this passage.

According to I Timothy 2:6,7 these things were "to be testified in due time" through Paul's apostleship. As he says, "Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle." You see it was given to Paul to explain the significance of Calvary. He was the first to reveal that Christ is the mediator between God and man, the first to teach that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, the first to show that we have redemption through Christ's shed blood, even the forgiveness of sins, the first to make known that Christ died for all, the first to reveal that Christ was the propitiation for the remission of sins that are past (prophetic saints), through the forbearance of God. A failure to acknowledge this truth is to anticipate revelation, which does a great injustice to the Word of God.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST

"Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins" (Col. 1:13,14).

As the Apostle Paul brings us within view of heaven's glory, we are going to learn that our passage has been bought and paid for by the shed blood of Christ. The Word of God is unmistakably clear that "without shedding of blood is no remission" (Heb. 9:22). Dear ones, we must never underestimate its value in our redemption. There are those who would rob us of this wonderful truth. The liberals deny it, the new evangelicals avoid it, but we who seek to defend the faith thank God for the precious blood of Christ. We plead guilty to preaching a gospel of blood! The Bible is a book of blood; it's woven throughout the pages of the sacred record.

On June 6, 1944, commonly known as D-Day, the tide of World War II turned in favor of the Allies. General Eisenhower had assembled one of the largest invasion fleets in history. While political and military strategies played a role in the victory at Normandy Beach, our young men who courageously fought and bled and died for the cause were essentially the ones who conquered the enemy. We owe these men a great debt of gratitude for their heroism. The Second World War was won because many of our troops paid the ultimate price.

Likewise, in God's war against sin, He has conquered the enemy by the shed blood of Christ. When we consider Christ's coming into the world to redeem mankind, we are immediately faced with what appears to be an insurmountable problem. How can God's only begotten Son enter the human race without sin? After all, human parents who are sinners can only reproduce sinful offspring. The answer is found in Hebrews 2:14:

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil."

Here is a classic example as to why it is so important to consult the original languages at times, to arrive at the proper sense that the Spirit of God initially intended. Thankfully, we don't need to be Hebrew or Greek scholars, simply because the work has already been done for us by those who are gifted in these languages. God has not left us without assistance!

When it states that the "children are partakers of flesh and blood," the term "partakers" is the Greek word koinoneo, which denotes "to share in common or to share fully." Thus, the human race shares something in common--flesh and blood--through which has passed the sin nature. But the Spirit of God is careful to draw a distinction between the human race and Christ's identification with humanity.

"He also Himself likewise took part of the same."

Notice Christ is said to have "took part" of the same. The Greek word here is metecho, denoting "to share or participate in, but not fully." Through the miraculous conception and virgin birth, Christ laid hold of human flesh without inheriting the sin nature. Since "the life of the flesh is in the blood," we can safely assume that His blood was not tainted with sin. This certainly cannot be said of us. The life of the flesh is in our blood only in the sense that the blood coursing through our veins keeps us alive to sin another day. Little wonder Peter calls it "the precious blood of Christ" (I Pet. 1:19). It is the antidote for the disease of our sins.

While this is denied by some, we believe Christ literally shed His blood at the Cross. When the priest in Israel poured out the blood at the foot of the brazen altar, it symbolized the foot of the Cross, where the blood of the Lamb would one day drip (Lev. 4:32-34). Blood is an interesting paradox: murderers attempt to get rid of it, God cleanses our sins with it. This crimson thread is woven throughout Paul's epistles leaving us with a tapestry of redemption.

"But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him" (Rom. 5:8,9).

Today God is justifying ungodly sinners on the basis of the shed blood of Christ. In this context, justification means to be declared eternally righteous by God. Justification is a legal term. For example, if a prisoner is brought before the bar of justice there is only one way he can be justified. He must be found NOT GUILTY. If it is proven he is not guilty then he is a just man.

But let us consider another case. A man commits a federal crime and is found guilty and sentenced to death. The President of the United States can pardon him, but he can never justify him. Even though the man is pardoned, he is still a criminal guilty of the crime. There is no way to justify him or remove his guilt.

But wonder of wonders, we are found guilty before the bar of God's justice, yet we are justified by God's grace. The law points its bony finger into our face and says, "You are a sinner, guilty as charged, and therefore condemned to die" (Rom. 3:19,20). As the sentence is about to be read, Christ says to the Father, "I will bear their guilt and punishment." Christ gave Himself a ransom for all. He took our place!

God did not overlook the penalty of our sins--the death of Christ paid for it. Our sins and guilt were placed upon Him, and His righteousness was imputed to us. In Christ, we are guiltless before God, accepted in the Beloved One, and delivered from the wrath to come. This is the wrath of God we would have experienced at the Great White Throne Judgment and subsequent sentence to the Lake of Fire. By God's grace, we are beyond the reach of God's righteous judgment. As the apostle declares, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:1).

LET THIS MIND BE IN YOU

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 2:5). As the apostle pondered the character of Christ through the prism of the once-for-all sacrifice, he was moved to write, "Let this mind be in you." In other words, be compassionate, humble, generous, forgiving, etc. Christ loved the unlovely. Allow me to illustrate:

George Whitefield, in one of his travels, found himself at an inn one evening. To his surprise, in the next room there was a company of gamblers. Their language was terrible. Whitefield and his friend spent a little time in prayer and reading the Word, and then he said, "Before I retire, I must go in there and testify to those men," and he did. He went into the other room and told them about the Lord. They listened, but by the time he got back to his room, they were as bad as ever. His friend said to him, "Brother Whitefield, what did you gain by that?" And he said, "I gained a soft pillow. I can now go to sleep."1

George Whitefield had a burden for lost souls. He loved the unlovely. Even though his words appeared to fall on deaf ears, he could rest easy that evening having shared the gospel and warned these ungodly men of the judgment to come. I fear sometimes that believers are so busy majoring on minors that they fail to realize that lost souls are slipping away to a Christless eternity, while they are trying to prove a point.

May the lesson that we learn from Calvary be this: a humble heart is one that can be greatly used of God. As it has been said, "The humble person is not one who thinks meanly of himself; he simply does not think of himself at all! Humility is that grace that, when you know you have it, you have lost it!" Since the beginning of the Gospel tradition Mark has been viewed as an inferior, abridged version of the book of Matthew.

Augustine's statement that "Mark imitated Matthew like a lackey and is regarded as his abbrevitor" was the prevailing line of thinking until about the first half of the nineteenth century.

As a result of scholarly investigation of the first three Gospels, it was determined that Mark was actually the first Gospel.

What do we know about the book of Mark?

It might surprise you to find that there has been some controversy regarding the authorship of the book called "The Gospel according to Mark". Much like the writers of the other Gospels, the writer does not identify himself. He does not declare the occasion for its writing as do Luke (1:1-4) and John (20:30-31).

The titles for all four Gospels were given by the church sometime during the first half of the second century. The standard naming convention for a Gospel was "The Gospel according to ..." .

Usually an Apostle like Matthew, John or a major figure such as Luke, is used to name a Gospel. Mark was not considered a prominent figure Biblically, nor does he appear often in the text. Let's examine the references containing Mark that the Bible does provide.

Acts 12:11-12 tells us a bit about Mark's family.

Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.

1) What was happening in these two verses?

Mark leaving the mission caused a rift between Paul and Barnabas over Mark accompanying them on the second missionary journey:

Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. Church father Papias (A.D. 140) states that Mark served as a secretary to Peter and recorded Peter's testimony. The order in which Mark presents his Gospel mirrors that of Peter's recitation of those events in the book of Acts. (3:13-14 and 10:36-43)

You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. Acts (3:13-14)

You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached-- how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Acts (10:36-43)

13) Is the similarity between Peter's account of the Gospel story and Mark's version in any way supportive of the theory of Mark as Peter's secretary?

The date of the writing of the Gospel is also difficult to discern from scripture. The most compelling internal evidence that could point us to a specific time period would be Mark's emphasis of Jesus as the suffering Son of God ,and on suffering discipleship, suggesting Mark's audience to have been Christians undergoing persecution.

This would place the date of writing as around the time of Caligula's attempt to place a statue of himself in the guise of Zeus in the temple of Jerusalem. (Josephus Ant. Book 18 Chapter 2 ). Caligula, called Caius by Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, was murdered in 41 A.D.

Josephus wrote:

"Hereupon Caius, taking it very heinously that he should be thus despised by the Jews alone, sent Petronius to be president of Syria, and successor in the government to Vitellius, and gave him order to make an invasion into Judea, with a great body of troops; and if they would admit of his statue willingly, to erect it in the temple of God; but if they were obstinate, to conquer them by war, and then to do it."

The second persecution within a few decades of Jesus' crucifixion was under Nero in Rome. This theory places the writing of Mark in the early to mid 60's.

Gaius Cornelius Tacitus wrote Annals (book 15 verse 44) in the late first or early second century:

"all human efforts, all the lavish gifts of the emperor, and the propitiations of the gods, did not banish the sinister belief that the conflagration was the result of an order. Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of a charioteer or stood aloft on a car. Hence, even for criminals who deserved extreme and exemplary punishment, there arose a feeling of compassion; for it was not, as it seemed, for the public good, but to glut one man's cruelty, that they were being destroyed."

Further evidence that Mark was writing to Romans is the fact that Mark felt the need to explain Jewish practices to his readers, and even interprets Aramaic forms that remain in the text. These practices point to a Gentile audience. We will examine these when we study those verses.

Where this Gospel was written is less certain, again Rome is likely.

Jesus - part 1 - the culture of physical culture

The purpose of this article is to offer an insight into the world and culture that we live in as compared to the culture that Jesus was in during His time on this earth. Also, to show our perspective as compared to His.

Often, we understand someone that we are listening to based upon what we know about that person, or "where they're coming from"... where they live, what they do for a living, are they single or married and with or without children, etc. This lesson is designed to give you a glimpse of "where Jesus was coming from" and where He was trying to lead our minds.

Too often, we overlook the simplicity of basic research when studying about Jesus. We are searching for complex answers and justification of our own lives as we study about Jesus, and are often limited by finite thinking and personal experiences. In order to understand "where Jesus was coming from", we need to return to the simple humanistic roots and traits of this man, whom we, as Christians, believe to be the son of God.

As you read about the culture of Jesus, there are two distinct cultures about him to understand. The physical, or earthly culture of Jesus' day and time, is a return to the basics. You need to understand some of teh basic cultural differences between Jesus' time, and ours, but also the specific differences between the Eastern and Western cultures that still exist even today. The physical culture helps us to understand "where Jesus was coming from", while the spiritual culture of Jesus tells us, in fact, "where Jesus came from" to impart upon this earthly journey. The spiritual culture of Jesus, that will be presented in a subsequent article, reveals what Jesus was trying to tell us about the spirit based upon examples of what we would understand by using the physical.

Now, let's revert back to strictly the physical culture of Jesus for the remainder of this article. As you read, I believe that you will begin to understand more about who the person of Jesus was and the relavency of his teachings and examples here to us today.

Some of the following portions of this article are from a sermon preached some time ago by Ravi Zacharias, a christian converted about 30 years ago from Hinduism, based upon some of his personal knowledge and experiences.

Interesting Points

In John 14:6, Jesus speaking to Thomas says, "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me." India, as we know it today, was one of the places that this same apostle Thomas visited... in fact, it was in what we now know as India where Thomas gave his life as a martyr, for boldly preaching about Jesus, and a memorial still stands in that country today. (This is interesting, since this is a country that worships 330 million gods, yet a memorial stands for the martyr of the One and only God, whom they reject the concept of as an all powerful single deity.)

I worked with many "India" indians and have been in some very interesting conversations with them. In many parts of the East, it is punishable by death if you change from your country's religion to Christianity... from Islam, or Hindu, or Buddha, or Bahaism to Christian is a certain death sentence. Whereas we, as U.S. citizens have the right to worship any religion, many countries in the east do not enjoy such freedom. In Jesus time, it was also a threatened environment, often times leading to death. In studying about the different apostles, you will find that Paul was often in fear for his life or in prison for preaching about Jesus. John was beheaded for his beliefs. Others were beheaded or stoned to death for their belief and proclamation of Jesus as the Christ. While not always against specific laws of the day, certain powerful religious sects and political associations created a very dangerous threat for Christians in Jesus day. Even Jesus escaped some cities because he knew that some of these sought to kill him.

Also remember the several passages that refer to multiple dieties. Some had so many 'gods' and idols that they even had one dedicated to an "Unknown God". The east has literally millions of gods that are worshipped still today. Even of those of the same common beliefs, the conservative and extremist sects battle constantly. If we, who all believe in but one God, have disagreements and various interpretations, imagine how confusing it would be with millions of gods! The people in the east, therefore, tend to follow whatever their tradiitonal family beliefs because to research, study, and dispute them would be dangerous to their life, societal suicide, and would literally consume their entire life, and that of their children and grandchildren to arrive at any hint of religious origin.

Ravi Zacharias said this: "I came to Him because I did not know which way to turn. I have remained with Him because there is no other way that I wish to turn. I came to Him longing for something that I did not have. I remain with Him because I have something I will not trade. I came to Him as a stranger. I remain with Him in the most intimate of friendships. I came to Him unsure about the future. I remain with Him certain about my destiny. I came amid the thunderous cries of a culture that has 330 million deities. I remain with Him knowing that Truth (referring to John 14:6) cannot be all-inclusive. Truth by definition excludes all others." Powerful, powerful words and faith.

East vs. West

The East is very different from the West in how it establishes value. This is absolutely key in understanding where Jesus was coming from. In the East, using India as a prime example of Eastern perspective, first and foremost is the strength of the nuclear family... Father, mother, and children. This is true of most eastern cultures today, and was the same in Jesus time. The culture is strong and holds sacred the reverence of the immediate family. The bonds of the household are wrapped tightly in the East. So much, that the success or failure of the children socially elevates or lowers the entire family. Individuality is swallowed up by the clan.

This is such a vital point in eastern culture that everyday, hundreds of advertisements are printed across the newspapers in what is called the "matrimonial section"... parents looking for spouses for their children. Every prospective bride and groom is advertised as being from "a good home" and searching for someone from "a good home". "My son is an engineer." "My daughter is a doctor." "My son was first in his class." "My daughter won a scholarship." The boasts run on at social gatherings. Everything is done to keep the family as a whole as a single unit, with complete and utter reverence for the parents wishes on everything from jobs to marriage.

The second dimension, aside from the "glue" of the family ties, is the social reality of intense academic competition. Everything that defines an individual and his or her future is shaped by his or her performance in school. Every student wants to be the first in his or her class. It is not enough to just do well. You MUST be at the top of your class or close to it. Intellect is worshipped, and rewarded. This is relevant in that this is why we see the priests & scribes of Jesus' day holding the positions & power they had. They were regarded as very learned men for their time, the highly educated men of the day; whereas Jesus was simply a lowly carpenter's son, basically labelling Jesus as an uneducated or low educated man. Student's grades and position in the class are printed in the leading newspapers for all to see. In Jesus day, it was by word of mouth that this same information travelled. The simple fact that Jesus was a carpenter's son created the assumption in that culture that he was uneducated, thereby presenting a major challenge to Jesus' credibility from his very birth. Success or failure is reason for public pride or shame.

Ravi stated in one of his sermons that one man he knew said, "One of my closest friends toyed with suicide after his high school exams because he did not stand first in the entire city of New Delhi. Another one of my classmates in college actually burned himself to death because he did not make the grade."

If a father is in a high position, then his children are expected to achieve equal or greater social standing. A child's worth and perceived intellectual ability stem from the father's social position, and opportunities to the child are offered accordingly. Although the child can exceed expectations and restore pride to the family if the father is at a lower social level, the child can also permanently damage the entire family's social standing if they fall short. Obviously, this creates an extreme amount of pressure on the children to outperform their parents; which for those with parents of the highest standing in the communities dooms several to fail before they even start, for how do you exceed the highest standing?

This combination of the standard of the Home and the standard in Society is a volatile, yet core mix of the Eastern person's life. This value system is cherished with a passion, and very little has changed in this value system since Jesus' day.

Now, understanding the importance of Family and Social Academic standing, let's look at the Culture of Jesus, starting with Jesus' introduction; not as a baby in this world, but as the Lamb of God, the Messiah that every Jew had heard, studied, and prayed about all of their lives.

Can't you just imagine the conversation in the home of Andrew and Simon Peter, the earliest followers of Jesus, when Andrew first informed his family that he believed he had met the long-awaited Messiah? Here Andrew sits at the dinner table and he is saying that he just came from meeting the prophesied deliverer?! Any good Israelite had prayed for the coming of the One who could free His people all of their life, and now here this young man sits, saying that he has just spent hours with Him, and Andrew says he had even been given the opportunity to ask this Messiah any question he desired. Out of sheer curiosity, one at the table must have skeptically asked, "O.k., and what, perchance, did you ask Him?" "I asked Him where He lived," comes the confident reply.

Now, our response would probably have been something along the lines of, "You asked Him where He lived?!" Can't you just hear it from our perspective? "You what?! You get to ask the Messiah, the One who has come to save us, one question and that's the best you could come up with?!" We would have thought that question to have been a total waste of time, wouldn't we? This seems like a pretty casual & trivial question to ask the One who claims to be the Messiah, the One whom your grandparents, your parents, and you have prayed to come for generations, doesn't it? We would not care where He came from. Based on today's western culture, we would most likely want to know three basic things;

1. "Where is He?", because we would want to know the quickest route to get to him, and maybe even what to punch into our GPS system in our cars to eliminate traffic getting there. After all, we would want to verify this for ourselves, in person, or it's just hearsay.

2. "What can He do for me?", because we would need to mentally perform a cost analysis to at least ballpark the ROI, Return On Investment, since we would be spending time and money to get there and see Him ,and those two items (time and money) are precious to us in western society.

3. "How fast can He do it for me?", as our assumption would be that if we spend the time to get there and grace Him with our presence, there better be some good old-fashioned U.S.- expected instant gratification awaiting us.

The more I have thought about it, though, the more I am convinced that this would-be disciple had very sound reasons for asking what he did, especially in that eastern culture. This was the beginning of Andrew's serious investigation into the person of Jesus. Was this truly the Christ, the Anointed One? For nearly 2,000 years, the prophets had told of His coming.

The Setting of the Question

The setting is given in the 1st chapter of John. Immediately, we notice the casualness with which Jesus made His entry. There is no drumbeat, no great fanfare or parades, nothing to herald the coming of the One whose name would be on the lips of humanity in a way that no other name had ever been, nor ever has since. These people exepected an earthly king that would finally, once and for all, take them to the top of the status food chain over the Romans and the rest of the known world. They wanted everyone to hear, see, and know that they had just been promoted to the top of the societal totum pole. Yet, Jesus came into action gently and almost silently compared to what hte people expected.

John the Baptist, or baptizer, was given the honor of making the unadorned announcement. John, draped in strange clothing (even for his day) and living off of even stranger food, was gaining a huge following. In the eyes of the devout, he was a prophet of supreme honor. Yet for John to have proclaimed this carpenter's son from Nazereth as the Messiah was even stranger. No "king-maker" could have ever conceived such a modest approach for such a world-changing announcement, especially not in the East!

Yet, on that day at a divinely appointed moment, Jesus came to John to be baptized. Awe-stricken by this privilege, John stuttered out his own unworthiness of such an honor, declaring that he was not even fit to untie the sandals of his Lord. The scene is memorialized even to this day, however, by the dove descending upon Jesus. As this heavenly affirmation was given, John looked at two of his own followers and said, "Look, the Lamb of God."

Think about this. This was a sobering statement from John the baptizer. The average Jewish family grew up with lambs and sacrifices. The temple probably reeked of animals and their slaughter, especially on the Day of Atonement. The exterior grandeur of the temple housed only a rather grim and messy alter. So, stating that this Messiah was the lamb of anything was even an unexpected and very unappealing concept. Every lamb sacrificed was a lamb of men offered to God. It wasn't an equal to men, not a representative from among men, just a dumb unsuspecting animal brought into the temple, never to return.

Now, in this appointed moment in history, an offering came from God himself and was given by God on behalf of Humanity... the Lamb of God. One born for the purpose of being sacrificed on the alter someday. Yet, even with this grim picture of who this Messiah was, these followers of John who heard his pronouncement of Jesus as the Lamb of God turned from John to follow Jesus. You see, they knew and understood what this meant; the impact and greatness of this statement in that culture. For generations, men had sacrificed lambs to God; now, God was sacrificing a Lamb for men. If they understood the spiritual impact of that statement, they followed Him. If they failed to understand that one simple statement for the spiritual victory that it meant to them, they rebelled against Him.

Now, back to Andrew... wouldn't this jolting introduction by John the baptizer, a respected supreme prophet, have provoked or inspired a different question from someone wanting to become a disciple of the Messiah? Remember the assertion that I made earlier, that in the East, the home is the defining cultural indicator. Everything that determines who you are and what your future holds is tied to your heritage and your social academic standing... absolutely everything. You see, in Jesus culture, the East, Andrew's question was quite typical, and vitally important to these people in determining someone's value or worth as a person.

It's not at all surprising that Nathanial's response when he was told about Jesus was, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" And some verses later, "Is this not the son of Joseph, the carpenter?" How in the name of reason could the answer to the hopes and dreams and prayers of Israel, in search of a Messiah, come from a city of such low esteem and from a family of such modest professional status? The best way for them to find out whether He could really be who John described Him to be was to follow Him to His house - to the earthly address of the One who claimed to be the Son of God.

Jesus' answer to Andrew's question, "Where do you live?", builds the intrigue. He didn't give a street name or house identification. He simply said "Come and see." So, Andrew followed Him to where He was staying and evidently stays the night there. When he returns, Andrew tells his brother Simon and invites him to "Come and see" also.

The next day, Philip, who was also from the same city, invited Nathanial to join them, saying, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote - Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." There you have it again - the city and the parentage. After hearing that, Nathanial is skeptical and cynical, and given the same challenge, "Come and see."

Now, here is a people who have been hearing about, praying for, and looking for this great Messiah, the Savior of their people, the King of Kings... man, they're ready for a major blow-out power party and trumpets blowing and all the pomp and circumstance of the most powerful King ever known to come save their day... and here is this poor man that walks up, from the "wrong side of the tracks", dirty from walking in the dry hot desert, hair ratty and tangled and dusty, and we are told that He was not spectacular or incredibly handsome... the son of just some carpenter that some of them know from this city that isn't regarded with much respect socially, and he walks up and claims to be the King of Kings, the Messiah that you've listened to your grandparents, your parents, and teachers talk about as a great hero...this is the Lamb of God, God's Son, the Hope of Hopes that we've been waiting on?

As important as His earthly parentage was, especially to these people in this culture, His home address was not an earthly one. From John, the same writer that we get the record of Andrew's question from, the Gospel writer forthrightly states this in John 1:1 & 14: "In the beginning was the Word (which we know is Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... and the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us."

The "Lamb of God" in a very real sense, had no beginning, as we understand beginnings in our mortal realm. Amid the "where" and "when" questions that plagued these people, and plague us today, there is no such encumbrance for the eternal and infinite One. We will look at more of this in the article on the Spiritual Culture of Jesus. He had an eternal perspective that He was trying to elevate them to throughout His teachings. Yet, He had to teach His message through earthly ideas within their culture that they could understand and relate to. Sometimes when we say that we just don't understand the Bible, it is really because we haven't taken the time to understand the culture that Jesus lived in or was teaching in.

The task ahead of Jesus when asked where He lived and He told them, "Come and see", was to lift them beyond the here and now. Beyond the limited understanding of this world and truly show them how to follow Him home... to His home in Heaven.

Andrew had a reason for asking the question, and Jesus was offering a journey of thought as His answer. We will take that journey farther in Part 2 of this lesson, but for now, put yourself in Andrew's sandals. He had been invited to the home of the One identified by a recognized prophet as the Lamb of God.

Now, to us today, would you recognize Jesus if He walked up to you? Would you recognize a darker skinned, brown-eyed, dirty, sweaty, poor person in torn filthy clothing and sandals with no real earthly belongings, what we consider as financially broke and destitute, as your Lord and Savior who has the power to forgive your sins and mistakes? Would you bow down at his feet, before this one called Jesus, in your dress pants and gold watch and nice hair and sweet smell? Would you worship Him and accept Him as He is, and believe Him when He speaks to you? Would you look at Him and try to be just like Him?

How about if He took you by the hand and said, "Here, stand with me. Let me look at you. I love you, do you know that? That's why I hurt for you. That's why I cry for you. That's why I died that day for you. I'm so glad that you can finally really see me." Would you ask, "Where do you live?" Would you want to follow Him home?

Jesus is still telling us today the same thing that He told Andrew ,hoping that we, too, will understand the importance of that question, and the relevance of His answer... "Come and see."

The End Times and the Return of Jesus

I maintain Jesus was not a prophet; for not only did Jesus prophesy and cast out demons, He fulfilled many long standing prophesies. During His incarnation every demon was subject to Jesus. He alone was given all power in heaven and earth. As the incarnation of the word of God; Jesus was the master of all prophesy and the keys to all Biblical prophesy are His. I could mount a reasonably good argument that Jesus wasn't prophesying when He spoke of the future because He knew the future. If you remember something it isn't prediction it's cognoscente!

The signs of the times

Only Jesus' words can be used as the guide when you look at Biblical prophesy. The text is found in Matthew 24 if you want to read it. Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives and the disciples came to him, this is how it went.

"Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

When will this happen?

1. Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

2. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

3. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

All these are the beginning of birth pains.

1. Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death,

2. and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

3. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray

4. and hate each other, and

5. many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

6. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,

7. but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

8. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

What will be the sign of the end of the age?

1. "So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation, spoken of through the prophet Daniel--let the reader understand-- then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

2. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house.

3. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak.

4. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!

5. Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath.

6. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.

7. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.

8. At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible.

See, I have told you ahead of time.

What will be the sign of your coming?

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

Immediately after the distress of those days:

1. the sun will be darkened,

2. and the moon will not give its light;

3. the stars will fall from the sky,

4. and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

5. "At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky,

6. and all the nations of the earth will mourn.

7. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.

8. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree:

As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.

Since Jesus said when you see the abomination that causes desolation, spoken of by the Prophet Daniel, let's look at what Daniel says about it. The instructions are found in Daniel chapter twelve.

The End Times

The angel told Daniel, "At that time

1. Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.

2. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then.

3. But at that time your people--everyone whose name is found written in the book--will be delivered.

4. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.

5. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens,

6. and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

7. But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end.

8. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge."

Then Daniel, looked, and there before him stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, "How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?"

1. "It will be for a time, times and half a time.

2. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken,

3. all these things will be completed."

4. Many will be purified, made spotless and refined,

5. but the wicked will continue to be wicked.

6. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.

7. "From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished

8. and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

"As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance."

There are so many prophesies about the end times that they have confused a great number of people. Among the most prolific interpretations of prophesy is that written by Darby at the end of the 19th century. His interpretation of Biblical prophesy, known as dispensationalism, was (and is) widely accepted. However, the key to all Biblical prophesy must be the words of Jesus. Any prophesy that doesn't conform to His words must be assumed to be about something else.

So let's look at the Seals in the book written by John. Let's look at Revelations Chapter six.

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!"

I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!"

Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!"

I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.

Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!"

I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar (the place of sacrifice) the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.

o "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?" They called out in a loud voice.

o Then each of them was given a white robe,

o and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.

I watched as he opened the sixth seal.

1. There was a great earthquake.

2. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair,

3. the whole moon turned blood red,

4. and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.

5. The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up,

6. and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

The Seventh Seal

When he opened the seventh seal, there was:

1. silence in heaven for about half an hour.

2. seven angels who stand before God and to them were given seven trumpets

3. Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar.

a. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne.

b. The smoke of the incense,

c. together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel's hand.

4. Then the angel took the censer,

a. filled it with fire from the altar,

b. and hurled it on the earth;

c. and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

The Angels and Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

1. The first angel sounded his trumpet,

a. There came hail and fire mixed with blood that was hurled down upon the earth.

i. A third of the earth was burned up,

ii. a third of the trees were burned up,

iii. And all the green grass was burned up.

2. The second angel sounded his trumpet,

a. Something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea.

i. A third of the sea turned into blood,

ii. a third of the living creatures in the sea died,

iii. And a third of the ships were destroyed.

3. The third angel sounded his trumpet,

a. a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water-- the name of the star is Wormwood

i. A third of the waters turned bitter,

ii. Many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

4. The fourth angel sounded his trumpet

a. a third of the sun was struck,

b. a third of the moon,

c. And a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark.

i. A third of the day was without light,

ii. and also a third of the night.

5. The fifth angel sounded his trumpet,

a. A star falls from the sky to the earth.

i. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.

ii. When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.

iii. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.

b. Out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth.

i. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

ii. They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months.

c. The agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man.

i. men will seek death, but will not find it;

ii. they will long to die, but death will elude them.

iii. They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon

6. The sixth angel sounded his trumpet,

a. A voice said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates."

i. And the four angels were released to kill a third of mankind.

ii. The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million.

The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues

o still did not repent of

a. the work of their hands;

b. murders,

c. their magic arts,

d. their sexual immorality

e. or their thefts.

o they did not stop worshiping

a. demons,

b. and idols

The Angel and the Little Scroll

Then another angel from heaven doesn't sound a trumpet.

o He was robed in a cloud,

o with a rainbow above his head;

o his face was like the sun,

o and his legs were like fiery pillars.

o He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand.

He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down." He is the same angel Daniel saw earlier giving the same orders to John as he did to Daniel!

This angel

o Raised his right hand to heaven.

o swore by him

o who lives for ever and ever,

o who created the heavens and all that is in them,

o the earth and all that is in it,

o the sea and all that is in it,

o "There will be no more delay! But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets."

John is then instructed to take the scroll and eat it. He will have to prophesy against many lands and peoples. It is the finding of the scroll of Daniel that triggers the prophets! This is when John tells us of two "witnesses", prophets who will come in to the world.

1. And I will give power to my two witnesses,

2. and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth."

3. If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.

4. They have power to shut up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;

5. and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague.

6. when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.

7. Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.

8. The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

The Seventh Trumpet

The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:

"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever."

Then:

o The twenty-four elders, fell on their faces and worshiped God.

o God's temple in heaven was opened

o There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,

o an earthquake

o and a great hailstorm.

o The woman clothed with the sun,

a. with the moon under her feet

b. and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

c. She was pregnant

d. cried out in pain as she was about to give birth

Then another sign appeared in heaven:

o an enormous red dragon -- that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray

o His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky

o The dragon stood in front of the woman so that he might devour her child the moment it was born.

o She gave birth to a son, a male child,

o who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.

o her child was snatched up to God and to his throne.

o The woman fled into the desert.

o There was war in heaven.

o Michael and his angels fought against the dragon

o The great dragon was hurled down. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Then a loud voice in heaven says:

"Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.

They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them!

But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short."

This is the basis for Demons and Prophets. It may not be the most pious of the definitions of the Biblical text but it is accurate to level that I can keep it so. See, God is the same yesterday as today and will remain the same forever. He doesn't have bad days, and he doesn't treat me different than you, not my ancestors different than me. He has only one will and only one law. These do not change because of us. So dispensational theology is not right and I challenge you, my friend, to read the Bible yourself and see if I am not correct. Furthermore, read all you can about Jesus first. For Jesus is the key to it all. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a false prophet and a false Christ. The will of God is not biased by how well the human animal behaves, He is concerned with your spirit and soul not the carcass you carry around.

After stating the prophesies of Malachi and Isaiah in verses two and three, Mark quickly tells us of the coming of John in verse four.

And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

1) What is Mark saying by moving so quickly from the prophecies of Malachi and Isaiah to ministry of John?

○ John is the fulfillment of those prophecies.

2) What do verses one through three say abut John according to the prophecies of Malachi and Isaiah?

○ John is the messenger who clears the way for the coming Messiah.

○ His ministry will take place in the wilderness.

The people of Israel had been without a prophet for about 400 years. Hosea prophesied about the time between the Old and the New Testament saying:

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or idol. Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the LORD and to his blessings in the last days. Hosea (3:4-5) (NIV)

3) What did Hosea say would happen to the people of Israel?

○ The Israelites would live without God or His representative.

○ They would one day return to the worship of God.

Crowds of people were making the journey to see the figure who was announcing the fulfillment of Israel's destiny.

4) How do you think the people of Israel might have viewed John's coming after all those years?

○ Any number of thoughts, emotions and ideas would probably be a valid answer .

5) What does this long period of time between prophets tell us about God's time?

○ God's reckoning of time is far different than that of men.

6) How should knowing that God operates on a different time schedule than we do change our thinking ?

○ It should be an example of patience to us.

○ It is a reason for rejoicing, for He is long suffering.

John's ministry was one of active participation, He came and baptized anyone who was willing.

7) What point was Mark making regarding John's baptizing other people?

○ John called all people regardless of gender, race or social stature to be baptized as a symbol of moral and spiritual regeneration.

In contrast to Gods patience, John was calling for immediate action, the time of the coming Messiah was near!

Mark does leaves out certain things about John that we are told in the other Gospels. Among them his birth and relationship to Jesus and John's disagreement with the major schools of Judaism.

John's ministry took place mostly in the wilderness or in some translations, the desert. It was a re-enacting of the inaugural event in Israel's history, the Exodus. The Israelites were leaving the city and returning to the wilderness.

8) What significance is there to John's ministry taking place in the desert or wilderness?

○ It would remind Israel of her covenantal origins in the Exodus.

○ The wilderness was a place of redemption to Israel.

○ A place of meeting with God where His mercy and grace were often handed out to the nation of Israel.

Mark portrays John as the fulfiller of Elijah's climatic role of the forerunner to the one who was more powerful. Appearing in the wilderness fulfills both the Mosaic and prophetic prototypes.

John calls people out of their comfortable homes, and away from the temple, to a baptism of repentance the forgiveness of sins.

9) What does John mean by repentance?

○ The Greek word used for Repentance is "metanoia" (met-an'-oy-ah). Metanoia is a compound word meaning both "to change ones mind" and "to alter one's understanding".

○ Conscious thought and a willful act are requirements of true faith as opposed to a faith built on feelings, emotions or traditions.

10) What does John mean by "For the forgiveness of sin"?

○ John does not bestow forgiveness, only God can forgive sin.

○ Forgiveness belongs to the new Covenant which the coming of the Messiah will bring.

11) Who was John calling to repentance?

○ The call is not only to sinners and Gentiles as in Luke, but to the religiously pious as well.

Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?" Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.

Luke (3:12-13) NIV

Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?"He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay."

Luke (3:14) NIV

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire." Matt (3:7-12) NIV

Historian Flavius Josephus wrote of John's call for social reform in his book Antiquities:

"Now some of the Jews thought that the destruction of Herod's army came from God, and that very justly, as a punishment of what he did against John, that was called the Baptist: for Herod slew him, who was a good man, and commanded the Jews to exercise virtue, both as to righteousness towards one another, and piety towards God, and so to come to baptism; for that the washing [with water] would be acceptable to him, if they made use of it, not in order to the putting away [or the remission] of some sins [only], but for the purification of the body; supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness. Now when [many] others came in crowds about him, for they were very greatly moved [or pleased] by hearing his words, Herod, who feared lest the great influence John had over the people might put it into his power and inclination to raise a rebellion, (for they seemed ready to do any thing he should advise,) thought it best, by putting him to death, to prevent any mischief he might cause, and not bring himself into difficulties, by sparing a man who might make him repent of it when it would be too late. Accordingly he was sent a prisoner, out of Herod's suspicious temper, to Macherus, the castle I before mentioned, and was there put to death. Now the Jews had an opinion that the destruction of this army was sent as a punishment upon Herod, and a mark of God's displeasure to him."

Josephus actually pays more attention to John than he does to Jesus. John's impact on the world are a part of recorded history.

Mark tells us something of the reach of John's ministry in verse five.

The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. (NIV)

12) Who does Mark say responded to John's message?

○ People from all around the region.

○ All the people of Jerusalem.

This statement is likely a case of Mark using hyperbole, a Literary exaggeration used to convey a message.

It would indicate that God's covenantal people went out to be baptized, probably as families.

Doctor Luke writing in the book of Acts tells us that John's message traveled far and for a longer period of time than is reported in Mark.

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"

I as a prophet primarily growth than many people come to me, about Benny Hinn questions. I think you want to know they are all in his false prophets of the false teachers. What excites you? Are you a big sports fan? Does watching your favorite sports team in a close game get your adrenaline flowing? What is your passion; what captivates you? Have you ever been really excited by someone or something? Has your mind, your heart, ever become engrossed in an unique experience to the point that you were unaware of what was going on around you? To some in may be a sporting event. To others a good book or movie. To me it is the beauty of God's creation. I love just to sit and enjoy the view of peaceful calm lakes, snow-covered mountains, gentle moving streams or to take a walk along a peaceful ocean beach.

The issue of modern civilization is the furthest thing from my mind when I am absorbed in the beauty of God's creation. I get a similar feeling when Jesus speaks to me in Scripture. He is a master at story telling. He speaks with authority. He taught as no man had taught before. He used simple stories (parables) from every day life to convey hidden truths about the kingdom of God. Like a skillful artist, Jesus painted beautiful pictures with short and simple words. In our imagination, we can join his original audience as they hang on every word. When Jesus spoke, his listeners were absolutely spellbound.

For two thousand years, Christians and non-Christians alike have admired the teaching ability of Jesus. As a teacher Jesus employed a variety of techniques to implant his message upon the minds of his hearers. He is a master teacher in both his method and message. Jesus uses vivid every day illustrations as one of His most powerful teaching methods. In these parables He uses common, every-day experiences of life of His original listeners as illustrations to communicate the most important truths any teacher has ever delivered.

As I study His teaching I can sense His presence. I can hear His voice as He speaks to us through these simple but powerful illustrations. These powerful parables will enable us to grow spiritually like never before. They will transform us into His likeness.

This method of teaching using vivid everyday illustrations is very powerful and makes it easier to remember. It draws the image or word picture on our memory. For example, how many of us can remember the stories of the "Three Little Pigs" or "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears"? I am sure many of us remember the key points of these stories. Yet it probably has been years since many of us have read or heard these stories. This is the same with Jesus' parables. We do not have a bunch of principles to memorize and soon forget. These down to earth illustrations burn themselves into our memory.

Approximately one-third of Jesus' recorded teaching is found in the form of these everyday illustrations, which are called parables. Some of the best know sayings of Jesus are from His parables. For example the words "prodigal son" and "good Samaritan" and their general meaning are well known to most of the world. When we think of a "prodigal son" we think of a wayward and rebellious child. The phrase "good Samaritan" brings to mind a helpful and caring person. These are general thoughts conveyed by these parables, however, Jesus had a deeper meaning than has been captured by the above phrases. During this study we will be investigating these deeper meanings.

The word "parable" is derived from the Greek word "parabole" which means "to place beside, to cast alongside". It "signifies a placing of one thing beside another with a view of comparison". This method of comparison of the "known" (earthly) truths with the "unknown"(heavenly) truths shed further light on the unknown. Jesus is placing the known next to the unknown so that we may learn". It is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. When Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like....", He was placing an earthly thing beside a heavenly truth for the purpose of teaching about the kingdom.

Jesus used parables because they contain objects that the audience can relate to. Jesus always customized His message to His audience when He taught. When He was answering the Pharisees, He quoted the Old Testament. When He teaches the general audience of His day who were mostly farmers, Jesus used familiar things like seeds, soil, sheep to illustrate difficult truths. These simple concepts are still relevant today.

Jesus' parables are like a road map. His Spirit leads us on a path from the known into the unknown. A specific parable usually conveys its message of truth through an analogy, a comparison or a contrast.

Jesus' parables often had a surprise or an unexpected twist and would catch the hearer off guard. The parable would move from the very familiar and understandable aspects of an experience to a sudden turn of events or a remarkable comparison that would challenge the hearer and invite him further reflection. This required reflection or meditation is what separates the truth-seekers from the curiosity-seekers!

Our understanding of the truths of these parables will have a great impact on our spiritual lives. Parables contrast the inadequacy of man-made religion versus the sufficiency of a personal relationship by faith in Jesus. As we study the parables it is as if God is holding up a mirror showing us our warts. The study of the parables will have a dividing effect on us. It divides those who believe from those who don't. Jesus says that His Word is sharper than a two edged sword and divides bone from marrow.

The truth divides. Our hearts will either be softened or hardened by the teaching of the parables of Jesus. It has been proven in nature that the same sun, which melts ice, will also harden clay. What awakens one will harden another. Our hearts will either be softened or hardened by studying the parables of Jesus. Parables strengthen the faithful while blinding the faithless. They encourage believers and discourage unbelievers. Believers will see more clearly while unbelievers will become blinder. Jesus is the only one who can give sight to the blind. Jesus as the Savior and Lord who is the only One that can change people, regenerate them, give them eternal life (See appendix A - Roman Road).

When the Disciples asked why He spoke in parables. Jesus quoted from Isaiah. In Isaiah's famous vision in the temple (Is. 6:8-13), God says the people will hear but not understand His truth because they did not want to listen. Because of this He would allow their hearts to be hardened, their eyes blinded and their ears stopped. Yet it was Jesus' desire that all hear and believe. Jesus' common expression, "He that has ears to hear, let him hear," is a plea for us to understand. This also demonstrates the New Testament teaching that the Holy Spirit is required (does the interpreting) for the believer to understand. This is what Jesus meant when he said, "not everyone would understand." This illustrates the fulfill Isaiah's prophesy that hearts, eyes and ears are closed. It was the judgment of God upon the hardened hearts of Israel. Their dull and rebellious hearts would make them blind and would end in judgement.

Because of these harden hearts Jesus was using parables to perk their interest and awaken their spiritual senses. The parables both revealed and concealed. Those who were spiritually hunger would understand. Those who were not hungry would not be fed. It was not that His word hardened their hearts, their hearts would be hardened to his word.

Jesus' ministry was always in conflict with the views of the Pharisees and scribes. Jesus used parables to catch his hearers off guard and to teach them about their sin in a way that would not make them defensive. His parables often involved an element of surprise or an unexpected twist. The parable moves from the very familiar to something that challenges us to invite further reflection. They catch us of guard and teach us about our sins in a way that breaks through our defenses.

This same technique was used by Nathan to convict King David of his sin. Nathan told the unsuspecting David the seemingly harmless parable of a rich man and a poor man living in the same city (2 Sam. 12:14). The poor man owned only a single little ewe lamb, which he loved as a household pet. The rich man owned large flocks; yet when the wealthy farmer had a guest to serve, he took, killed, and prepared the poor man's single lamb for the dinner!

Nathan sought to get inside David's guard and cut the iron bonds of his self-deception and to strike the moral blindness from his eyes. It was a welllaid trap and David responded with moral outrage, thus condemning himself. Nathan then applied the parable to the king's affair with Bathsheba (2 Sam. 12:514). This parable took David by surprise. But with only a few minutes of meditation and with the help of Nathan, he able to realize that "He was the man."

In understanding parables we should consider the context of the parable. Look carefully for the question, issue, or situation that Jesus is answering or illustrating by the parable. Parables should always be interpreted in the context of the lesson Jesus was teaching. And finally, determine what central truth is being taught. The parables usually show attributes of the kingdom, the King, His subjects, and the relationships between them.

Parables can provide great insights into our relationship with Jesus the King. A Key to understanding parables is seeing its context in the ministry of Jesus. Many times Jesus strings parables togeather to illustrate the same point. I like to think of Jesus' parables as portraits or word pictures. In many of the parables we see a picture of Christ. His love, grace, patience, mercy, compassion, faithfulness, powers, and majesty are just a few of His characteristics we see as we study the parables.

The parables also reveal the heart and thoughts of God. Jesus is a living parable, the visual presence of the invisible, eternal God. He is the clear window into the mind and heart of God. To see and hear and experience Him is to see, hear and experience the Holy God of this universe. Yet, the proud pull down the shade and miss the opportunity of a lifetime to know God personally and intimately. God only reveals to those who are interested to know the truth. The Bible says in Deu 4:29 that if you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

A practical way to look at the parables is as a mirror. The parables reflect the difference of your life compared to the principle that Christ was trying to teach in the parable. They force us to take a spiritual inventory revealing the condition of our heart. You'll know where you stand, having studied these parables. They will act as mirrors revealing our heart-condition: our priorities, our commitments, our selfishness, and our sins. They will force a spiritual inventory.

As we study the parables, we will come to a crossroads, having to choose our way or God's way, his will or my will. When we apply the principles taught in the parables we develop a Christ like Character. When studied in this light they become a valuable media of revelation and encouragement. The true value of the parable is how we apply the truths to our daily lives.

To properly interpret a parable, first picture the image in your minds' eye. Allow it to come to life in your imagination. Mediate upon God's word. Once you have the image before you, use it as an analogy. Think about how the analogy works in relation to the Kingdom of God.

Given Jesus' use of parables, we must acknowledge an element of concealment in them. The parables were given to an audience before the cross and the resurrection, and much of the parabolic material concerns the kingdom of God, which only came into being after His resurrection. As Jesus taught one must be "born again" of the Holy Spirit. This is the relationship of a follower of Christ that determines his membership in the kingdom. Although some parables are sometimes hard to understand, they are meant to be understood, at least by those who are led by the Holy Spirit.

Second we can use the knowledge gained from other parables and the scripture as a whole to help us interpret the other parables. For example Jesus explains a few of the parables. We build our understanding from these. Jesus explains the parable of the sower. A central truth to this parable is that the "good soil" brings forth fruit. The "good soil" are those that receive the gospel of Christ and are "born again" of the Spirit. The Bible teaches only those who are indwell by the Spirit of God can understand Scripture. Therefore it is a prerequisite that to understand the parables you must be a true believer of Christ. The Bible teaches that a seeker, one who is seeking to understand who Jesus is, first must accept Him for who He says He is the "Savior". Once you repent and believe that you are "born again" of the Spirit. The Spirit is the one who allows you to understand and apply God's Word to your life.

But when we are confronted by God's Word, the power of His Spirit draws us toward Christ rather than away from Him. That's the purpose of parables and that's the purpose of Bible Study. In Bible study, we come to be confronted with truth that will hopefully turn us toward Christ and ultimately set us free.

God must disclose this truth to us. This is why man's wisdom is never enough. Man can discover many things about life and, with technology, we can invent a lot of useful implements and gadgets but we will never, never satisfy human life on those terms. We must know more spiritually; and only God can teach us. That is why these mysteries are of great importance. The gospel of Christ itself is greatest of these mysteries. Its great secret, Paul says, is "Christ in you, the hope of glory," {Col 1:27}.

We must act upon God's truth in order to retain it. Truth rejected or unused is lost. May God grant us the heart to listen and to act upon what we learn from His Word.

"For to him who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away." {Matt 13:12 RSV} That is a basic, fundamental law of life. That is the great principle upon which God operates to govern human lives and human history. "To him who has will more be given ... but from him who has not, even what he has [or, as Luke says, 'even what he thinks he has'] will be taken away." Now, what does that mean? It is so fundamental that it applies to everything in life, to every realm of existence.

It is true on the physical level. You have muscles in your body. Suppose you deliberately refuse to use one? You will find that soon it will begin to weaken, and the strength you once had will be taken away. All you need do to render your arm paralyzed is simply to tie it up and not use it for a few months. Soon you will find you have lost the ability to use it. Life is built this way. This holds true for spiritual strength as well.

The general theme of the parables is "The Kingdom of Heaven is like.. ". In other words Jesus is showing us what the kingdom is to be like. He is giving us a mirror to see our selves as members of the kingdom, plus He is showing is the Father to show us the image unto which we are to be transformed.

There are at least the following three major sub-themes in the parables of Jesus:

(1)The character of the KING, (2) the character of the KINGDOM, and (3) the character of the KING'S SUBJECTS

The kingdom of heaven is spiritual in nature now and involves the reign of the King (Jesus) in the believers' hearts. In is manifested today in the lives of the believers (The church). Yet it has both a present and future sense. Present in the lives of the believers, future in the sense of a physical kingdom in the coming of the Lord Jesus, new heaven and a new earth.

Yet these "mysteries of the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 13:11), containing "things kept secret from the foundation of the world" (Mt 13:35), are now being made known through the preaching of the gospel of Christ. This mystery referred to God siting aside the nation of Israel and substituting the church as the subjects of the kingdom. "Now to Him who is able to establish you according to the gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began" "but now has been made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures has been made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith;" - Ro 16:25-26

As we study the parables, let us keep the following thoughts in mind. Let us always start with the immediate context of the parable looking for the question, situation, or problem Christ is addressing. We should start by asking the question, what is the problem that prompted the parable? When Jesus told a parable, He was dealing with either a Question or an Attitude - Often both at the same time. The question might be spoken or unspoken, after all, He can read our minds. Or He might be dealing with a bad attitude. We have to examine the context to see if a question was asked or implied. And we need to see if there is an attitude that needs to be dealt with, etc. If you don't understand the question, you can't come up with the right answer.

Jesus told the parables in the historical context of His day. Most of the parables used such common illustrations that we can grasp the historical/cultural context with out a lot of difficulty. Jesus is drawing on culture, historical events, etc. We need to ask what the historical and cultural context is. We also need to look at the immediate literary context. What is going on in the text both before and after the parable? What has just happened or what has just been said? Did Jesus perform a miracle immediately before or after the parable? Just as the disciples asked Jesus to explain some of the parables, we need to do the same. Remember, the disciples didn't understand the parables, but they asked what Jesus meant after the crowds left. They had a soft and open heart. Understanding is an issue of the heart. What happens in your life after you have heard the words of Jesus determines "who you say that He is!"

Some unspecified period of time has passed between the end of the temptation in verse thirteen and the beginning of Jesus' Galilean ministry at verse fourteen.

The Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, all record Jesus' ministry in Galilee. John adds that a Judean ministry took place before Jesus started His ministry in Galilee.

After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. Galileans were considered a mixed race of people who did not zealously adhere to the law and were despised by the Jews.
