Gordon concedes to Senator Noynoy Aquino...

This is really a first for Philippine elections... I think we should stop finding every fault in the automated elections and instead see all the benefits that it's has afforded us. We have a much peaceful elections now. I haven't heard much news about election-related violence. I believe there is even new found respect for our politicians who are humbly conceding defeat.

Though of course the Philippines first-ever automated elections was not perfect. We have to accept that in any new process there are birth pains, I think in a way it was very successful. We will be able to fine tune the entire process later on.

For now, kudos to COMELEC except for those darn P380 folders!

I'm watching ANC live streaming on the net and Manny Villar has just announced that he is conceding defeat in this year's Presidential Race to opponent Noynoy Aquino.

It was a very gracious speech as he vowed to continue his work to alleviate poverty in the Philippines together with Noynoy Aquino and the new administration.
Furthermore, he says that in the future he would want to clear his name of the many allegations made against him during the campaign.

His last words were congratulations to Noynoy Aquino. Very nice.

Update: Is Your Passport Still Green?

Soon enough mine will already be red! A few days ago I headed on over to DFA's new office along Macapagal. The place is relatively easy to find and to go to. Just take EDSA all the way crossing Roxas Boulevard. Upon crossing Roxas Boulevard, turn left at the stoplight across from Blue Wave (has a Petron gas station and several restaurants). Just go straight and spot the new DFA office just to your left. Take a u-turn and have yourself dropped off, if you have a driver with you. If not, you're better off just parking at the McDonald's across the street and crossing.

Are you going to have your passport renewed or changed to the new MRP/E Passport?

Just follow these simple steps to make your passport renewal experience a breeze!

Go to the DFA Passport Appointment System website and set your appointment. Click on the link or paste this URL on your browser: http://www.passport.com.ph.
You can also call the DFA Passport Appointment System hotline at 730-1000.
Make sure to have the ff information handy especially if you're making the appointment for other people:
                a. Complete Name
        b. Home Address
          c. Father's Complete Name
        d. Mother's Maiden Name
          e. Mobile Number
        f. Telephone Number
        g. Old Passport Number
Don't forget to print out your application form and take note of your Appointment Reference Number.
Prepare your document requirements. Listed below are the typical requirements for passport renewals. For new application requirements, go to the DFA website.

Green Passport or issued after 01 May 1995
    * Present passport and photocopy of pages 1,2,3 (amendment) inside and back cover.
    * The pages showing latest Bureau of Immigration departure and arrival stamps.
    * For illegitimate minor, personal appearance of mother is required.
Other Supporting Documents
Please bring the following if they are available.
**ALSO PROVIDE PHOTOCOPIES OF WHICHEVER OF THESE THAT YOU HAVE.
    * Marriage Contract
    * PRC / IBP ID
    * Land Title
    * Driver's License
    * Government Service Record
    * Old SSS-E1 form or digitized SSS-ID
    * School Form 137 or Transcript of Records
    * Other documents that show full name and birth details of applicant and/or citizenship
    * Voter's Registration Record
    * Baptismal Certificate
    * Seaman's Book
    * Income Tax Return (Old)
Prepare your payment.
Regular Processing: Php 950.00 (20 working days)
Rush Processing: Php 1,200.00 (10 working days)
An additional fee of Php 200.00 will be charged for processing of Lost Passports if it is still valid
Then you're good to go!
On the day of your appointment, make sure to be there at least 30 minutes before your appointment time.
Once you get to DFA, enter through Gate 2 which is where people with appointments should line up. Upon entering the gate, tell the guard you have an appointment or show him the appointment form that you printed.
Past the row of seats upon entering Gate 2, you'll see a long table. Head on over there and give your name so they can give you your official application form. Fill it up already if you want (Don't affix your signature yet! They'll have you sign that at a later step) or just wait till you get it because you're in for a pretty long wait.
Head to the right of the table and go around the table to get to the entrance to the building (surrounded w/ glass windows). Show the guard your application form and they will either ask you to line up or go in.
Once you're in, get your number, find a seat and get comfy.
There are 24 windows so your wait shouldn't be that long.
Watch out for your number on the LCD screens hanging from the ceiling.
While waiting, prepare the ff:
             Your application Form
             Old Passport
             Passport page photocopies
             Photocopies of supporting documents
             **Decide whether you'll go for REGULAR or RUSH processing. The person at the window will ask you which is your preference.
These are all you'll need. Just hand them all to the person attending to you once your number has been called and you'll be fine.
AGAIN, make sure that you have photocopies of your supporting documents. I saw a lot of people who had to go out and have their documents photocopied. Save yourself the hassle. Just 1 photocopy per supporting document is enough.
Once you're called, the person at the window will get your documents and your old passport.
She'll punch your old passport and give it back to you.
She'll also check your documents and ask you if you prefer REGULAR or RUSH processing.
She'll then return your documents to you together with a receipt.
It's now time to head on to the SECOND FLOOR to the CASHIER for payment.
Go up the stairs or take the escalator - it's your choice.
Once you get up there, you'll see a long table with printers and people.
THAT'S FOR OPTIONAL PASSPORT DELIVERY which is the LAST STEP so I'll discuss that later.
For now, head straight to the entrance right beside that table and look for the sign that says CASHIER above 4 windows.
Line up.
When you get to the window, just give them your receipt together with your payment (either P950 for REGULAR or P1,200 for RUSH Processing)
Head straight to the Photo and Data Encoding section which is just to the right of the CASHIER windows. Look for the guy (or girl) giving out the numbers.
You'll see many rows of tables and the right most table nearest to you would be the with the person giving out the numbers.
Now, you wait for your turn.
When we got to this step, we were "happy" to find that there was still around 300 people left to process before it was our turn. Waaah!
No worries though because there are around 70+ people being processed at one time but still prepare. The wait here is still longer than the wait downstairs.
Here they'll take your picture, encode your data and ask you to digitally affix your signature which takes a bit longer.
Waiting for 300 people before us took about an hour and a half.
Lucky 13 is the last and optional step which I fully recommend that you take.
For a minimal fee of P120, they will deliver your passport straight to your home address (the one specified in your application).
Upon heading out the Data Encoding room, you'll see the row of computers I mentioned in item 11 to your left.
Give your receipt and payment to the left most person who'll then issue you a receipt.
Upon payment give your passport payment receipt to one of the attendants to your right and they'll quickly process your delivery request.
Then YOU'RE DONE!

I got there at 12:30pm and left at 4:30pm but I actually believe that if there weren't so many people that the process would be much faster.
I suggest that if you have no plans of traveling anytime soon that you should hold off renewing your passport at least until school starts again.
There was a whole lot of families renewing their passports most probably rushing it for their summer vacation. The sheer volume of people could also be attributed to the rumored April deadline for renewing the green passports.
According to the people at DFA that I talked to, the April 10, 2010 deadline for green passports is true. Although you can still use the passport until its expiry as of that date, there are already several countries who will not accept the green passports.

Your Mascara can cause Brain Damage

I'm such a fan of mascara so when I spotted this article on todayshow.com, I immediately had to read on.

Many of today's beauty products all claim "natural", "mineral" or even "organic" but there are ingredients contained in these products that are not necessarily safe for use. Check out this list and make sure to take a look at the label of your favorite products to make sure they don't contain these harmful ingredients:

Sodium Laureth (aka 1,4-Dioxane)
This is normally found in products that produce lather or bubbles. This ingredient is commonly used in beauty products which is especially alarming because this ingredient has been classified as a human and animal carcinogen.

Thimerosal
This ingredient is common in mascaras but is disturbingly linked to brain damage due to the fact that it's a mercury-derived preservative. We don't want brain damage and we don't want this ingredient anywhere near our eyes or any part of us, for that matter.

Phthalates
Diethyl Phthalates is a reproductive toxin linked to developmental problems in children. Though this ingredient is hard to detect as it not commonly listed in ingredients and can be disguised as 'fragrance' in perfumes, deodorants and hairsprays, we still need to be on the lookout for this especially since it is reported to still be a widely used ingredient in today's products.
Dibutyl Phthalate or DBP, Toulene, Formaldehyde
These ingredients are normally found in nail polish and are extremely dangerous. Formaldehyde not only turns your nails yellow, it's also a carcinogen. Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) has been banned in Europe because it's a reproductive toxin that has links to birth defects. Toulene can bring on headaches and can affect your central nervous system.

Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea
These ingredients release formaldehyde over time so watch out! As was mentioned in the previous item, formaldehyde is a carcinogen.
Nanoparticles, Nanomaterials or Nanotechnology
This is just plain scary because scientists have been able to break down ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc into incredibly tiny particles. The scary thing is that these particles are small enough to penetrate organ tissues and cell walls, so they could pose a risk. These ingredients are commonly used in sunscreen so be wary especially since it's summer and it's time to get out those sunscreens!

It's a pretty interesting thing to ponder though I highly doubt I'd get trapped inside our kitchen freezer since with all the shelves I can hardly fit in there. Fashion Summer Workshops at STI Fort Bonifacio Global City

Love Fashion? Want to know more about the different aspects of fashion like draping, pattern, sewing and styling?

Lulu Tan-Gan is partnering with STI to bring one of her dreams to life. She, together, with some of the countries premier designers are conducting Summer Fashion Workshops at STI's Center of Arts in Fort Global City, Taguig. Workshops range from flat pattern, draping, fashion styling to fashion accessories. There's a course to cater to everyone's interest.

Below is a brief description of each course (courtesy of Spot.PH):

Introductory to Fashion Design conducted by Inno Sotto. This short introductory workshop on fashion design covers capsule references to the history of costume, fashion theories, components of fashion, the intangibles of fashion, the design process and the fashion systems.
Experimental Fashion conducted by Patrice Ramos-Diaz. This workshop offers experienced designers an opportunity to develop fashion design concepts using different research pathways, creative processes and experimentation. A basic knowledge of design principles and technical skills in fashion design are required.
Modern Menswear Design conducted by Joey Samson. Most of the fashion industry caters to the women of the world. Take this opportunity to learn about a less saturated category: menswear. Learn about general classifications, designing for special occasions, building a wardrobe and designing a collection.
Creative Exercise in Sewing conducted by Pidge Reyes. This workshop aims to familiarize the student with the various tools and machines used in the garment business. Creative exercises prepare the student for advanced sewing courses in garment construction.
Basic Flat Pattern Drafting conducted by Joji Lloren. Students learn to draft basic slopers/patterns, the building blocks of a style pattern, to learn the tools, terms, and methods used for flat pattern drafting.
Draping 1 conducted by Joji Lloren. This workshop introduces the student to another method of pattern making by draping. The students work with fabric instead of paper to create a basic pattern set consisting of the front and back bodice slopers, front and back skirt slopers, and the basic sleeve.
Draping 2 conducted by Roy Gonzales. Draping is an intuitive and enjoyable way to create fashion ideas. By twisting, pleating, folding, gathering and/or layering fabric on a dummy, students can get the most unexpected results. Working with basic blocks, students learn how to draft patterns according to specific measurements.
Introduction to Knitwear conducted by Lulu Tan-Gan. This course offers you the chance to understand knitwear construction and create a project in knitwear design used in knit-loom. Students begin by creating their own fabrics through the process of research and sourcing for inspirational yarns and materials. Students learn how to knit swatches while gaining hands-on experience in pattern calculation and assembly.
Fashion Illustration conducted by Robi Lolin. This workshop is designed to teach the student how to create a fashion sketch as artistic rendering. When rendering a sketch, the freehand movement is guided by proper visualization of how a fabric falls, showing the design details and how mood is created within the sketch.
Fashion Styling conducted by Noel Manapat. Styling is an essential factor in making or breaking an image. Students learn techniques of fashion styling through styling assignments.
Creative Accessories Design conducted by Denis Celestial. This workshop teaches students how to create accessories using conventional material and techniques combined with uncongenial design.
Creative Exercises in Hat Making conducted by Pidge Reyes. This workshop teaches students how to draft, sew and embellish three basic hat shapes: sectioned cap, pillbox and the soft-brimmed hat. This simplified, step-by-step process is designed to give students a solid foundation for hat making.
Modeling 1 conducted by Rissa Mananquil. Learn the basic modeling techniques used by today’s top fashion models and understand what it takes to be a future supermodel.
Modeling 2 conducted by Rissa Mananquil. Equips students with runway rules and techniques. Students learn how to build a model’s set card and portfolio, and find out what’s in a professional model’s bag.

Let’s face it, work sucks. Supervisors and managers prowl about the office floor, on the hunt for slackers and people who don’t put in their hours of work. As much as you’d like to be Employee of the Month and contribute your share to office productivity, there are just those days that you simply can’t work. Either you didn’t get your eight hours of sleep because of an all-night party, or you’ve just burned out.

The good news is that you don’t have to do actual work to be a productive member of the working class. You just have to pretend that you’re very busy at work. All you need is to give the higher-ups an impression that you’re a hard worker, and those bonuses and perks will all be yours… without ever doing actual work for the day.

1. Turn Your Workplace Into A Living Space
Ever wondered why many cubicle workers look like zombies at the end of the day? Cubicles are coffins for the living office worker, finished in drab and dull colors
that don’t do much to increase productivity. Most companies don’t have rules regarding decorations on office space, although you may need to check again with your company’s employee manual if your company does have a rule.

2. Office Theatrics
Supervisors and managers are always on the lookout for employees who are engrossed with working, although in big offices, they have absolutely no idea about specific job descriptions. At first glance, it may seem to your supervisor that you’re typing up a long report, but you’re merely writing poems or answering e-mails to while away time and boredom.

You simply have to hunch over your keyboard, look intently at the screen, and put on a few facial expressions like worry and stress. As long as you keep a steady typing rhythm, your boss will not be worried. You can also use a few groans, moans, and humming noises to lure your boss into thinking you’re stressed.

3. Sneaking in Sleep

Veteran office workers have long since mastered the art of sleeping with their eyes open. For others, sneaking in sleep can mean all the difference between staying employed and getting fired. There are many ways to get some much-needed sleep in an office without ever getting caught. Here are some ways to catch a few winks in the office:

    * Office bathroom: it may not be as cozy, but it sure beats the alternative.
    * Cafeteria: make sure to finish eating before you catch a quick nap
    * Elevator: only works when you work in a really high floor of a high-rise building.
    * Cubicle: here’s where it gets really tricky. You need to swivel your chair against the cubicle wall (a blind spot for many supervisors), face the computer monitor, and catch a shallow sleep with your head on your shoulder.

4. Observe Movement Patterns
Most people think that supervisors and managers pace about the office all the time. The good news is that most of them would only walk about the office at set times. You can then schedule your slack-off periods outside these usual time frames, and pretend to work when the boss walks by your row.

These are just four of the many ways you can pretend to work. You definitely have to put in your share with the company, and you still can get fired if you abuse these tricks and your boss is on to you. You can use these handy tips on those slow days when work is simply a drag.
