an update to this post from the other day - I just came across a British newapaper article in the Guardian which says that fruit and vegetable consumption by lower income familes has dropped by 30% since 2006. I think it illustrates the point I was trying to make that tough times mean some tough choices and usually for the poorest.

According to a recent report from Food Banks Canada, 851,014 people were assisted by Food Banks in Canada in March 2011, up 26% from 2008.

 It was about this time last year that my (then) fifteen year old son had a phone call from a friend to tell him that one of his classmates had been killed in a car accident. Despite the fact that Statistics Canada claims that the  proportion of households using pesticides on their lawns and  gardens dropped from 31% in 1994 to 29% in 2005, I smell more than my fair  share of glyphosate-laden products in the air throughout the summer.

It's ironic that in the same press release issued by the Manitoba provincial government recently they spoke with one breath of the severity of flooding in the southern part of the province and with another breath of the possibility of forest fires in the ultra-dry north.
