It?s important that if you are re-reading this series that you answer the questions based only on the knowledge that we have so far!

1. Winky the house elf is found with Henry’s wand after the Dark Mark has been conjured. She is then set free for her disobedience. Thoughts?

I think that Barty Crouch did what he thought he had to do in order to keep up his appearance BUT I don’t think that he was right. Clearly Winky was half out of her mind with fright and is a very devoted servant. For her to be dismissed in such a fashion had to have been the worst day in Winky’s life. We already know what her feelings are on free house elves and now she has found herself among their ranks and not by choice. I felt so bad for Winky but I’m hoping that she’ll come to terms with her new life.

2. Hermione finds out that house elves are responsible for the cooking and cleaning at Hogwarts and then refuses to eat the food they have prepared. Would you have done the same?

I’m not sure what I would have done. I am such a people pleasure. After having an experience or two with Winky I would want to make the house elves happy. I’d probably do what I needed to do to make them happy but at the same time I’d probably have a knot in my stomach the whole time. It’s not right but the elves do seem happy with their positions. A one person strike doesn’t usually get you anywhere so I think that if I were that serious about it I’d find other ways to speak up for the house elves. And let’s just be honest here, I love food way too much to surpass the finery that Hogwarts dishes up.

3. Do you feel that Mad-Eye Moody was a good choice for a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor?

Yes and no. I mean who else is going to know more about the Dark Arts than an ex-Auror? For a teaching choice though, I don’t think it was the wisest move. It would be similar to putting an ex-drill sergeant in the physical education department. The professor and the students are so far apart in levels that it may be detrimental to their education. Can you imagine the stories an ex-Auror would have? I bet a lot of students started losing sleep after his classes. Lol.

4. The Triwizard Tournament sounds awfully dangerous. Would you have wanted to participate or watch from the sidelines and cheer on a fellow student?

Nope. I don’t like to preform in front of lots of people and the representation of the whole school would be way too much. I much prefer cheering on people who are far better suited for the task!

5. Do you think that Professor Moody was correct in doling out his punishment for Malfoy?

I want to say yes so badly because c’mon! It’s Malfoy! I think that what Moody did though is probably only going to make things worse for Ron than they already are. I can’t imagine that Malfoy actually learned anything from that at all. It humiliated him and while some people would have learned a lesson from humility I just don’t see that happening in any Malfoy.

It?s important that if you are re-reading this series that you answer the questions based only on the knowledge that we have so far!

1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire opens with a murder. Clearly we’re in for a darker book. Thoughts?

I’m excited to see the series take a more serious angle. In the previous books the threat of Voldemort hasn’t seemed real. It seems like the only threat from Voldemort is that he wants Harry dead. As far as the rest of the wizarding world goes, they seem pretty safe as long as they aren’t Harry Potter. In the first chapter or Goblet of Fire we see that Voldemort isn’t afraid to do what he feels is necessary to succeed in his plans.

2. Fred and George Weasley are entrepeuners. Have you ever thought of running your own small business?

To be honest, who hasn’t thought of running a bookstore for a living? I mean it seems like such a dream job. For me though the realities of it is what has stopped me from chasing that dream. The world we live in now doesn’t read as much as it used to. (I’ve seen a big jump in that from being able to interact with readers online!) The area that I live in is not big on reading at all. A bookstore here would never survive. On top of that I don’t know that I’d be very successful because I’d have a tendency to stock the books I like to read and would probably isolate potential customers unintentionally.

3. Wizarding tents are awesome! Do you tent camp? Would you if our tents were like wizarding tents?

I actually do tent camp but it’s actually pretty luxurious for tent camping. For two people we have a ten person tent that pretty much sets up itself. It has poles that retract so no trying to figure out how the poles go into the tent. We have an inflatable queen size bed and we take pillows and blankets. We take our propane cook stove, pots, pans, and utensils. I have to say that it is very comfortable and isn’t roughing it at all. I still wouldn’t say no to a magical tent that had all of that set up for me!

4. Dobby news! What do you think of Winky’s attitude towards an emancipated Dobby?

I have to say that I am proud of Dobby and a little shocked at how he is being received by the house elf community. It’s been two years since we last heard about Dobby and I’m so glad that he’s asking for wages for his work! I suppose when you’re the first of a group to try something radical and different, you will always attract haters first and then start to change people and their thinking.

5. What did you think of the Quidditch World Cup? The Team Mascots?

I wish so much that I could have been there! It sounds like the Super Bowl but so much better. (On a side note: doesn’t everything sound better in the wizarding world?) It’s a shame that the game didn’t last longer. It was awfully intense for the short amount of time that it lasted. I really liked the leprechauns but wasn’t too impressed with the veela. Maybe that’s the woman in me speaking but I don’t see what was so impressive about them. I’ve also been trying to figure out if they appeal to certain personality types. Hermione wasn’t bothered by them and neither was Mr. Weasley but the Quidditch referee was so it can’t be based on age or experience.

But new friend Shay would rather hoverboard to "the Smoke" and be free. Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world and it isn't very pretty. The "Special Circumstances" authority Dr Cable offers Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld was a fluke. It was a book that I had picked up largely based on the title alone. In an era where we outwardlytry so hard to not judge people for almost anything, a title like Uglies really jumps out at you. The first time I saw the book the title actually kind of made me mad. I didn’t check GoodReads for a rating, I didn’t look to see what my fellow bloggers had to say about it. I requested it from Paperbackswap and a few days after it arrived I started to read it.

Uglies starts out very slow. It took a little while for me to get into it. The first hundred or so pages lag hardcore. Once Uglies hits its pacing then I started to tear through the book. Tally goes through a lot in these 400 pages. Tally misses her friend and just wants to get on with her life. The last three months she has to wait seems to take forever for both Tally and the reader! Tally is the last of her group to turn pretty. It’s not until she meets Shay that her life finally starts to get a little interesting. Tally just didn’t realize how interesting it would get.

I think that the best part about this book is that we get to watch Tally grow as a person. In the beginning of the book all Tally wants is what her immediate future should hold. She doesn’t think of anything past New Pretty Town. It’s all she’s ever known and it’s not until Shay that she even begins to think about a life that isn’t what she’s been told. As the reader we discover along with Tally what lays outside those safe zones. Tally discovers a way of life that just a few short months ago, she never would have considered for herself.

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t overly attached to any of the characters which is really unusual for me. The story line more than made up for it. I was also glad to see a main character who didn’t buckle and blame everything on someone else. Tally stood up and took responsibility. She is a kick ass heroine and while I may not love her, I do have to respect the hell out of her.

Tackling My TBR Thursday is a new weekly feature at Once Upon a Chapter. I’ve used a feature before to highlight books in my TBR pile. The difference with this feature is that once a week I am going to highlight a book from my TBR “pile” (any book listed in my GoodReads profile before 2/7/13; clearly preorders do not count) that is going to be an upcoming read. I have a goal to get my TBR down. Even if it isn’t a drastic amount, down in general would be good. To meet that goal, I’m hoping to read at least one TBR book a week.

This week’s highlight:

Shadow Ochoa is lying low in the western Kansas Territory, waiting for his fellow Texas Rangers?the Hell's Eight brotherhood?to clear his name. That is, until he's unjustly strung up for horse thieving…and pretty Fei Yen intervenes. Invoking a seldom-used law, the exotic lady prospector claims Shadow as her husband and rides off with the bridegroom shackled to her buckboard.Savvy, fearless Fei is single-mindedly devoted to her hidden claim and all it promises: wealth, security and freedom. A husband is just a necessary inconvenience and a name on paper to hold the claim she cannot.

Shadow isn't a man to take orders from anyone, especially from lovely Fei?except that the daily friction between them ignites into nightly blazes of all-consuming passion. Soon Shadow is dreaming a little himself: of the life they could have if only Fei could see past the lure of independence. If only bounty hunters weren't closing in on him. If only he's left standing when the impending showdown has ended….

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling holds a special place in my heart for a few reasons. It is the last book where everything is still kind of bright and happy. After this book, the books start to get dark. It is also the only book in the series where Voldemort and his underlings don’t make an attempt on Harry.

As with all of the Harry Potter books, I loved this entry in the series. In this book, the students of Hogwarts finally have a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor who knows his stuff. I have to say that I really enjoyed Professor Remus Lupin. He is a complete underdog (no pun intended) and I feel like he got such a raw deal in life.

The visit back to Hogwarts is always one that I look forward to. Prisoner of Azkaban certainly doesn’t disappoint. We get to spend time in the castle, be with Harry as he plays Quidditch, be with the students during classes, and so much more. Hagrid’s first year of teaching Care of Magical Creatures occurs in the Prisoner of Azkaban. It is so good to be able to see Hagrid succeed after so many years of wrongful punishment. The only part about this whole book that didn’t sit well with me is the amount of time Ron and Hermione spent not speaking to each other because of their pets behaving like animals. (Apparently most of my problem comes from Ron being a whiny and annoying little brat.)

Of course at the end of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, JK Rowling twists the story and leaves us wanting to know so much more than she tells us. While we may not have any more new Harry Potter books to look forward to, we also don’t have to wait to pick up the next chapter in this phenomenal series.

Undone by Sara Humphreys is the fourth book in her Amoveo Legend series. It is Pete and Marianna’s story. I’ll be upfront here: I did not like Marianna much going into this book. She shows up in some of the previous books and in all of her interactions I just got the feeling that she was a character I could do without. I wasn’t even that excited for this entry in the series. The only thing that really had me continuing the series was Pete who I had enjoyed in previous books and the promise from Sara Humphreys herself that one of my beloved characters who had been missing would make a reappearance.

You guys, I am SO glad that I didn’t miss out on this book! I was so wrong about Marianna. In this book we get to spend more than just a few scenes with her. She’s a complete hothead which was a little annoying at first but she totally grew on me. Pete is of course his wonderful self. I enjoyed him in this book. He highly piqued my interest in previous books and I was happy to see that the Amoveo let the human stick around to play. As it turns out, fate knew what it was doing and he was there for a reason!

Watching Pete and Marianna skirt each other and learn each other was so much fun. Both are hotheads who explode into action. This led to some hot romance scenes and also some emotionally intense parts as well. The Pureblood Amoveo are up to some seriously nasty stuff in this book. It was good to see the main characters from previous books unite and come together in this book.

The only reason Undone didn’t get a full five stars is that there is a lot of new material introduced in this book. It’s not bad by any means. In fact, I’m excited with the new direction that Humphreys is taking. It was just a lot of new information introduced in a small span of time that overwhelmed me as a reader a bit.

The Amoveo Legend series is probably one of the best shifter series books that I have read and I can’t wait to see where we are going to go next! If you haven’t read Unleashed (book one in this series), please do yourself a favor and give it a chance!

Other posts with a 4.5 star rating

It?s important that if you are re-reading this series that you answer the questions based only on the knowledge that we have so far!

1. JK has taken everything that she has taught us in this book and flipped it. AGAIN. What was the most surprising to you?

I’m going to go with the obvious and say that the true Scabbers reveal was the most surprising to me. We already knew that there was something “wrong” with Lupin and I couldn’t believe that Black would have repeatedly missed Harry. I remember about halfway through the book thinking that Harry couldn’t be the real or only target. It was either that or Black was seriously inept.

2. Harry has a tough decision to make. Would you have let the man who betrayed your parents live?

I’d have to let him live for my own selfish reasons. I have a propensity for taking on guilt for things that everyone else has forgotten about and for things that aren’t even my responsibility. I can’t imagine that I could give the okay for justifiable vindictive murder and not need psychological help afterwards. For the sake of my own sanity, I’d have to let him live.

3. Do you think the dementor’s kiss should be performed for any reason?

I don’t know why I ask questions that I know I’m going to waffle on! Here’s the thing, you never know if someone can be rehabilitated if you don’t even attempt to correct it. You never know what is going to be their “Aha!” moment. Maybe it’s not possible to have one. I don’t know that it would justify removing someone’s soul. I think the Muggle comparison would be a lobotomy. It’s not a removal of the soul but you get about the same results. I think maybe I’d have a three strike rule. Not three convictions but three acts of severe harm. It’s not something to take lightly and I’d really want to be sure that the person was truly broken before administering something irreversible. I don’t know, I just feel like the Ministry really rushed the decision on the Kiss.

4. So Snape can shriek? (I imagined that shrieking was only for women.) What do you think of Snape’s reaction to as Dumbeldore put it his “great disappointment”?

I can see where Snape is coming from. It wouldn’t have been the choice I would have made but I’m not Snape. Here’s why I’m not all anti-Snape on this one: We see Harry vs. Malfoy in every single incident involving the two. We hate Malfoy because he’s a rich brat who leans heavily on his family name and status. Harry is an orphan who has been unloved for the first ten years of his life and Hogwarts is his real home.

I am totally breaking the rules here but I’m going to hide it in spoilers because I’m tired of being unfair and I think all of us who are participating are re-readers anyway!

5. What are your over all feelings about Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban?

Again, I loved it. I don’t think it’s possible for me to not love a Harry Potter book. What I enjoyed most about this book are two things really. One, it’s refreshing to have a book without a “Let’s Kill Harry” campaign from Camp Voldemort. Not once was I looking around a corner trying to determine where he was going to spring from.

Second, I LOVED that we are finally getting some of the back story! I remember from the very beginning that I was constantly trying to piece together how Harry’s life went so horribly wrong. How it all could have happened. Like Harry in this book, I too have gotten used to the idea that Dumbledore can do anything he wants. In the word’s of Hagrid “He’s a great man, Dumbledore.” If Dumbledore was a part of the Potters’ during that dark time when Lord Voldemort reigned supreme how did it all go so wrong? The best part of the book for me took part in the Shrieking Shack where at least part of the past is made clear. I cannot wait to dig into the next book with you guys. I really enjoy getting everyone’s perspectives!
